Question: Are they going to clarify the Astoria lore with this makeover? How many times has Astoria gone dark? And what about that bad piece of writing that has the authorities sealing Astoria up and allowing the inhabitants to all be butchered because they cannot escape? Hopefully that gets 86'd.

What I was referring to can be found in this thread, one of several that went through the lore of Dark Astoria. Here is the recap:

I took it to be an example of overly dramatic writing and/or a HUGELY jaded perspective. I think the more accurate and plausible narrative would be to reverse the above two sentences in that quote:

The army of Husks and Shaman ravaged the zone, tore the ground apart and sacrificed every man, woman and child in their efforts to wake the god Mot. The city authorities and Heroes, already reduced in number and staggering from the Rikti onslaught, had no choice but to relinquish the area to the Pantheon and wall it off.

Otherwise, you get into a really weird situation where nobody tries to evacuate or help, and in fact, they seal the zone up and prevent any escape by the doomed citizens, which cuts totally against the grain of the theme of "City of Heroes." So I always took it to be a "really big typo" instead of the official posture on what happened.
There have been several threads on Dark Astoria specifically, and it has appeared in some others which were more about the lore in general, like this thread.

Dark Astoria has a lot of atmosphere and this would be a fine time to clarify the lore regarding it and make it a tremendous place. If what is actually going to happen is that the Fog and the Ghosts will go and it will be gated behind Incarnate (meaning, "Insipid Sentient Insane Well of Furies Nonsense") lore, that is a crying shame.

Unfortunately, this part of the thread will likely be washed away in the torrent of "Carebear vs. LolPVP" fury that has been unleashed.

Astoria has such potential. An Incarnate makeover is a severe disappointment if that is what all of this means.

Hobbes, surely you are aware that you can now email inspirations, enhancements, recipes, salvage and inf now to your global handle, log on with the character you want to get that stuff and claim it out of email?

It is extremely easy to transfer stuff now.

If you were being ironic, chalk it up to my heroic impulses to assist.

For starters, two words: Bat nipples

There is a fine line, but it can be done. What we usually get, instead, are the extremes of the 1960s TV show (which was outright mockery of the "heroic Batman") and the Burton films, in which he is a psychopath. "Batman Begins" seems like it hit the sweet spot, albeit to the darker side of the scale; still, he was ultimately a noble hero.

Where the problem begins is that all of these extreme variations are purportedly the same character.

Not that I think what you've done for CoH has been a problem (the last splash page for SSA3 was great, if spoilerific), I'm thinking more of the upcoming Superman and Spider-man movies and how they don't seem to want to embrace the lighter, more positive nature of those heroes despite each of them having successful movies that did.
It is possible to have compelling heroes with an intelligent script without having to go Darkety Dark Dark. Troy Hickman has done that continually, and even used the oft-maligned cast of CoH to do it with.

Bruce Wayne can devote himself to making sure that no other child has to watch his parents be gunned down without having to have snapped like a dry twig and be a psychopath vigilante murderer a la Burton. As Mr. Hickman noted, if you want a psychopath vigilante murderer hero, make your own... don't retcon an existing hero.

Yes, I am another long-standing vote to have the CoH comic revived with Messr.s Hickman and Nakayama helming it. If that ever happened, Statesman would gradually become a popular hero for the vast majority of CoH players... those guys could make that happen.
  6. Okay, I hardly ever used the Vanity Pets, so big loss there. The ED Patch took away multiple Controller pets back in the day, so I understand that.

But the Buff Pets I have out a lot. Does this mean no Temp Pets like Shivans? And the Buff Pet croaks if I get mezzed?

Yes, this needs to be added to all the "These Young Whippersnapper Heroes Today Have It So Easy!" threads.

"Not only did we have to RUN everywhere in the Hollows, but every time a bell rang, Steelclaw had to re-start his tournament, you punks!"

Yes, the Steelclaw tourney participants of today have it SOOOOOOO easy. And they need to get off my lawn!

Dr. Doom is very similar to this; he wants to rule the world because he believes that he is best suited for it. Yes, he does have a massive ego. However, the citizens of Latveria have prospered as a nation. It may be a heavy handed rule, but again, he recognizes only himself as a competent ruler.
Alas, any world-saving tyrant who is defeated by squirrels has had his idiom wrecked. They should horse-whip the folks that did this:

  9. The charismatic, engaging villain makes for good fiction, I will concur. Part of what makes them engaging is that the author can tailor what is known about them and in effect, be their chief PR official.

Ricardo Montalban's Khan is very charismatic and Montalban played him as someone convinced that he was helping the greatest number of people by becoming the undisputed ruler of the world. His vast deeds of evil are mentioned in passing, but there is no visual record of atrocities to horrify.

The Phantom of the Opera has tremendous appeal, wears that cool mask and gets to sing some GREAT songs... so a lot of folks forget that Christine is only SIXTEEN YEARS OLD in the movie and that the Phantom murders, assaults and kidnaps merrily through the film.

There are others, but the authors can control just how much evil peaks through. Whatever appeal Hitler may have brought to the table is buried under the avalanche of documentation of just how much evil he wrought. The fictional villains do not have this problem.

But we are talking about entertainment, and many folks find such villains to be very entertaining... I have certainly been entertained by many... but I do not find them APPEALING. I have no desire to play a villain in-game. Evil deeds remain evil in my book, regardless of how they are spun. But some villains are interesting to watch. Khan may have been evil, but he certainly had his fascinating qualities.

And I also think the attractiveness of engaging villains is held up by very thin wires... I lost all respect for Doctor Doom when a horde of squirrels kicked his armored butt.
  10. Steelclaw, if you are having fun, you are doing it right.

But watch out. With quotes like these...

Which is where I ended up. I tried opening the Alpha slot on a few heroes, but the lore was utterly grating in many, many ways. Then came the endless new currencies, slots and weird trials in which you had to know the precise order of what inanimate objects and NPCs to attack, what dangers to avoid and the precise way to attack, in order to Uber-Uber UBER your powers.

    Blecch.

I like taking one of my super-powered heroes and banding together with like folks and seeing, within the mix of the powers that we have, how to approach the various problems that missions provide. This is called "fun." Having to plan the D-Day invasion with each person having a script as thick as a Hollywood epic to get the several different currencies needed for Uber Stuff in a storyline that is simply stupid is NOT fun.

I am with you. It does not exist. *tosses the squirrel a quid for a pint*

For example, if they hastily donned women's clothing as a desperate disguise, every bad guy in a three-mile radius would stop whatever they were doing to hit on them. If Curly was involved, the head baddie would want to marry him. This power was absolutely impenetrable for about 5 minutes, after which it failed totally.

The Stooges could also get an Assassin's Strike off on any sentry as long as they all dressed like Santa Claus. Everyone who saw them could not help but swear that this was the Real Santa (notwithstanding that there was THREE of him) and look into his bag of gifts. *BONG!*

The Stooges also had a variety of blasts available to them, such as Seltzer Bottle and their dreaded Nuke, Rain of Pies.

A lot of folks would cough up 800 points for such goodness!

Now I customized the color and took a different model Beam Rifle than the default, so that may come into play. Perhaps only certain weapons are affected.

Since I had HUGE problems with the Inviso Bug of 2006-2007 (which turned all enemies invisible), this is an interesting glitch, not something than renders game play EXTREMELY challenging.

  24. With Inherent Fitness, a number of choices regarding powers became moot for me, and I respecced into some I had not had room for previously. I still may not use them a lot, but they are there now.

With the modifications to the Flight pool, a number of slots got freed up. The inherent slot maxxes Flight speed, so I save a couple of slots there. Indeed, with the advent of the Hover Board, Flight as a travel power is now optional for me. I use a Stealth IO in Hover, which is how 99% of my heroes fight, and with the matching Flight IO in the set, I get a bonus and Hover speed is maxxed, and I also get Stealth. I turn on Steamy Mist and I am fully invisible, woot. This is the best situation for me, because Super Speed and I do not get along very well.

Earth/Storm is still pretty much my favorite combination, but it actually has gotten better due to the above. Whaddya know.
