  1. Title says it all.

/SD seems ubiquitous enough and has some interesting potential for team play, thinking of GC and PF mostly, will and that many shielders run Maneuvers.

Has anyone run any TFs with an all shield team?

    Does anyone want to?

Phalanx Fridays were my first thought for a catchy name, but I can't always play in prime time hours on Fridays.

Thoughts? Maybe not the best idea since it would be all scraps, tanks, and brutes? Or could we superteam it up with the best of them?
  2. Are you planning a Brute squad duo, or are you looking for an AT/set that would compliment you're friends EM/ELA?

How important is concept? You could be mirror image twins, one EM/elec, one elec/EA. As funny as that is, I sense that one of you might be getting the short end of the stick.

A Brute duo would be cool. IIRC EM isn't the best AoE set, maybe that is a gap you can fill? Perhaps you want to be able to stack stun onto your partner's stun, SS or WM? He'll have a heal, so you might also need one (unless you both take the medicine pool to be able to aid each other as well as yourselves). Come to think of it, is your buddy locked into using EM? Weren't there changes to it that make it less of the monster it was several issues ago?

Other ATs? Pick anything I guess. Maybe a buffer/debuffer (I like teaming with Rads personally, although many brutes are still hooked on Crack.. er I mean Speed Boost)? Defenders/Controllers, Corrs/Doms - all of those have great choices as a Brute's partner. Blaster is probably too dmg focused, and a tank would almost be redundant, almost. Scrapper would be interesting. Brute soaks the alpha, Scrapper nails the hard target, and the rest is just cannon fodder for you both. If both of you can manage your own blue and green bars, you'd literally tear through most missions. Maybe not as efficiently as brute + debuffer/buffer, but still damn good I'd imagine.

I'd be inclined to pickup the AoE slack, but I've never been able to play support roles very extensively. Deep respect for those that do though. A Corr might be an interesting choice. Focus on your secondary and take some choice attacks from the primary - be the debuffing AOE monster or something.

Since you are going Goldside, you have all the ATs (except for HEAT/VEAT) at your disposal. Go nuts. It depends on your playstyle and how you guys want to run the duo.

    Ice/Ice Brutes?

That's it, I called it. If we get Ice Melee I'm rolling me an Ice/EA "Pretty and Pretty" Brute.

Maybe I'll make a piety joke in the name somewhere in your honor!

    This.

Unless you're aiming to solo the TFs, any brute you enjoying playing and play well will rock a task force with a team.

Soloing them is a whole different can of worms, one I have no experience with.
  5. Thanks, sounds like the state of brawl is about where I thought it was.

Back when CoV came out I remember using it on a few brutes through mid levels, but I think my highest toon before I bailed was around 38 or 39 (em/elec iirc). I had a DM brute that auto'd it for a long long time. Frustrating toon that one, I blame /ea.

I definitely use brawl for a lot of the reasons above, but less often as recharge improves.
  6. I never feel heroic on my Brute, but I do feel downright Epic sometimes. What are you missing? My guess is quite a bit. /SD is made of awesome. I have read some posts on how it works better on scrappers than brutes, but that doesn't bother me. Still awesome on a brute. I can't personally compare it to other secondaries at high levels (except energy aura in the 30s - many many many issues ago. Pretty and meh), but I'm pretty sure it doesn't warrant the adjective of "squishy" even compared to things like /wp or /stone.

Nope, no self heal unless you dip into the pool for Aid Self. Honestly you shouldn't need it once you are even half built (like me, about half built or less) at 50 and at or near the softcap on your defenses - unless you are aiming to solo AVs and such. I haven't done that yet so no experience there, but I hear a self heal of some sort helps with those fights.

I noticed a night and day difference after getting Tough/Weave running with enough end management to handle it. The extra S/L resistance helps a LOT. Weave is maybe less of a buff, but still an easy way to get closer to capping def. If you aren't running those, that may be a factor as well.

If you are used to tank level survivability, I'm not sure a you'll get it. I will say that I got a tell from an LRSF leader that said he was really impressed with how well an /sd brute worked out as a tank for that. Lots of buffs on that team, so take that with a grain of salt. Still, nice to get props from the leader on a solid team like that.
  7. Pretty straight-foward question. In these days of massive amounts of recharge, do brutes still keep brawl in their chain, much less on auto?

Seems like a combination of fury changes and more ways to go faster (both happened during my hiatus from CoX) have made brawl less of a necessity. Or would that only be true at "top-end chain" levels of recharge?
  8. /DA would definitely be more unique than /SD. Having said that I see lots of /SD brutes, but WM/ seems to be a less common combo than elec, ss, or km.

Either way, WM is smashing good fun. I like that with Pulverize, Jawbreaker, Clobber, and CC I get 2 KBs and 2 stuns. Add in Whirling and Shatter for two more stuns and the mitigation is really pretty good.

Paired with /DA, end management will be fun. Slot for endredux in your attacks while you lvl. Later on it gets easier to handle epic power choices, sets, and such.
  9. What are your melee/ranged/aoe numbers like? I'm not so savvy with the math, but it looks like you are missing a few of the 6th slot def bonuses that are common on /sd. Maybe you got soft-capped another way?

As far as recharge, what Alpha line are you taking?
  10. Thanks again Deus!

I'll take a peek when I get home tonight. It'll be interesting to see the slotting choices, I had several powers I wasn't entirely certain what to do with.

Well, I'm still in "no purples, no pvps" territory, at least for now. Outside of that, getting what I need hasn't really been that much of a problem. The build I'm running currently is below. Pieced it together over span of time starting around 45 or so. Didn't seem to take that long really.

I do want to see how much I can juice this brute though. I go back and forth, do I want to keep enhancing resist in TG, or do I want to move those slots, or do I want a set in there?

    That's pretty huge.

Since you went for Energy mastery, I would say you should go that route as you probably don't really need more endurance assistance.
Thanks. I had a feeling it would work like that, but I didn't entirely understand how ED factored in before.

The more I think about it, the more Spiritual makes the most sense for the way I've built so far. The damage bonus might be nice, but the secondaries on that are less useful, the accuracy might be nice, but I'm not sure I'll need it. I could take Cardiac and choose a different epic/patron, but I'm not sure any of them benefit wm/ like Energy does.

Nope, no concept powers here, well save for the idea that I don't want anything that adds more redraw (AD and SC create enough).

Here's what I've put together thus far. The build is basically where I am in game, the only differences are that Deflection has a +Res IO instead of the Def/End piece and I don't have the +rech in Grant Cover just yet.

I'd love to dump Manuevers, and maybe Shatter. I want to like Shatter and sometimes it comes through as an AoE, but the animation seems so long and the cone is so narrow. Feh. I think as my recharge goes up I won't want it at all. I think there's a few <lvl 50 IOs left in there as well. I'm not really sure what to do with those spaces. Medicine pool? Hasten and something else?

One change I definitely want to make is taking the extra slot off SJ and putting the slow resist there, assuming it's worth keeping.

As far as /EA is concerned, I had one back in the day. DM/EA. After 35 levels I got tired of being completely outclassed and rerolled something else.

I've toyed with the idea of going Pretty again, just for kicks - but my STRONG will stay with my Shield, thanks much.
  15. I can beat that. Just the other day I hit the button one to many times and paid 28,282,282 for some rare salvage, Pangean IIRC.

    Someone made out bigtime.
  16. Thanks Deus, the paragon wiki link was very helpful, as always. I did get my secondary effects confused. Cardiac was the other line that I was looking at. I imagine the healing secondary works with powers that increase max hp, like True Grit in my case, so that's an interesting bit as well.

I did have a question on resistance, how significant is a 2% difference really? Is say, 17% fire resist enough better than 15% that it's worth using the slot for a res io rather than a set piece or a global?

I resolved a good portion of the end problems by slotting a couple of Perf. Shifter process (in stamina and physical perfection). Big difference.

I'm mostly thinking about this from the sense of where to put slots. Let's say, for instance, that I'm getting 1/6th of 33% that is immune to ED. That's 5.5% which is slightly less than 1LoTG. I think the far end of the Spiritual line is 2/3 of 45% which nets 30% immune to ED. Am i crazy for thinking that functions basically like slotting 4 LoTGs for comparison sake? If that's the case, then I'm wondering if that gives me a little more flexibility in slotting for other bonuses.

I'm on a work break at the moment, so I can't post a build. I've kind of wanted to, just to see what folks thought I could do next. At the moment I'm built for soft-capping (that's 45% right?) positionals (44.6/45.2/44.8 currently in game I think). Got to that through a lot of 6 slot bonuses, hence my need to economize to get recharge, or rethink my build completely. Power wise I think if I can find a way to drop Maneuvers and keep my def numbers up then the last shreds of blue bar issues might just disappear.

I'll probably toss the build up on here later tonight, just to see what folks think.
  17. Yet another returning player here, been gone since a little after CoV dropped. Pretty pleased with a lot of the new stuff - dinged 50 with the wm/sd brute I started along with my return.

Anyway, I just slotted the recharge Alpha (can't recall the name) on him just for kicks, and I got to say the buff was significant. It got me wondering though, the Recharge/Resist line is appealing to me to try to get a little more out of resists in /sd.

Are either of those ideas viable, or is the general consensus that you get more bang for your buck going the set bonus/LOTG route to get recharge, then using Alpha for something else?

My thought was to get recharge out of the Alpha slot, and be able to have different goals for slots. Blue bar management isn't quite up to par with the new SpeedMace (tm), but I'm not optimized there quite yet anyway.

I imagine there are as many ways to answer this as there are any other general build question, but I'm not quite savvy enough with the numbers to know the difference between 33% recharge on a power (alpha slot) and a 7.5% global recharge bonus. Do global bonuses translate 1:1 with enhancement bonuses (before ED)?
  18. I started one of these last night in Praetoria. Hadn't read about Jolting Chain and was a bit unimpressed at first. Being able to lead with KB on a closely packed group is interesting.

The thing I hate most is that if you miss the first hit check, the whole thing fizzles out. That might be a deal breaker.

    This.

Although IIRC the idea was nixed long ago, some response about swords not fitting the idea of a "brute." Some parts of the WM set seem kind of similar (whirling mace/sword, crowd control and whatever the arc in BS is called, clobber/headsplitter) so sadly, probably no broadsword brutes.

I would only want Repulse on a Brute if the knockback scaled according to your Fury level.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Would depend on my build, my DM/EA would skip repulse, it's hard enough to keep them together in a team with knockback for the high efficiency of things like SM, DC, SD, and ED

4 powers that rely on closely packed mobs for max effectiveness means no repel for me thanks. Maybe on other combos it would be a better choice though.

I haven't fiddled with my /ea stalker enough to tell - but you'll notice that none of the stalker sets have stealth aside from Hide. If /EA for stalkers had EC, it would be the de-facto set for staking Hide+EC+Stealth to avoid perception.

Conceptually, EC is a better fit for stalkers, but they get Hide as one of their signatures - replacing the stealth power made the most sense for balance.

That said, don't expect to see cloak of shadows in DA for stalkers either.

I think those are Stalker numbers. Remember you're talking to the Stalker rep. The multipliers are probably different for brutes.

So, dumb question here, but who's the Brute rep? Maybe we should send them a link to this thread, in a PM entitled

Here is a compiled update from this thread:

    Kristof Jeager......??-??......Villain..........................2124, 16, 7713 Nerva
+ Villain badge is currently bugged (kill 100 Longbow)

Villain is no longer bugged. I dinged it a few nights ago, and several others have reported the same. Also, whatever Jaeger's level range is, it is lower than 30 – just tried to get him a moment ago. I think that's actually been posted already, but since activity is fresh again I thought I would go ahead and bump it some more.

Great thread by the way – I may have never found these otherwise :P
  23. I'm not certain if anyone added this or not. I just finished Tarixus's set of missions. Was funny because I finished the story line ones and he kept giving me the stray missions afterwards. Anyway Archmage Tarixus is at the location listed, and does require Lorekeeper to get his missions.

Diviner Maros will send you to him with a letter and he'll send you on one mission to kill some CoT - but that is unrelated to Tarixus's other storyline.

Anyway, if you have lorekeeper start this guy at around 25, cause he has a boatload of missions - and pay attention when he starts talking about the Blackwand. This is the arc that gets you the Soul Taker Badge. You are basically collecting pieces of the wand - coral shards, soul of a hero (elite longbow boss Agent X), etc. I did them over a long span of time so I can't give a play by play. Soul Taker is somewhere in the middle and after the Forge The Blackwand mission you get to keep it. 10 charges, high Neg damage ranged attack with a pretty good recharge.

The downright coolest thing about this is that it does extra damage for Magic origin characters. Someone more familiar with the game could maybe point out other examples where origin affected the damage/effectiveness of a temp power, but this is the first time I have seen it.

Anyway, very cool contact to get - and Lorekeeper is a pretty easy badge to get as well; I highly recommend this one.

I'm also far from a min/maxer, esp. since a year's experience with CoH has shown me...what's the perfect build now might be lousy later, while what's 'gimped' now might be teh uber later on! Everybody might be rolling Stone/Stone brutes by issue 9, who knows...

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well put. I toyed around with EM on one of my brutes, (em/invul) and got him to 17 before i got so damn tired of the PinkPomPoms and BlingBling armor auras that I had to reroll - I wanted my brute to look and be evil.. I definately had fun playing the sets, and rolled EM thinking the high single target dmg would be fun - but it just wasn't as much fun as my DM/EA - arguably a toon that does much much much lower dmg.

The point is that you can drive yourself crazy min/maxing and then getting pissed every time an issue jacks your powers a little bit - or you can play to concept (or just pick what appeals to you aesthetically, conceptually, or whatever) and ride the issue's changes with a shrug and a grin since:

Never min/maxing means almost never sweating an Issue.

Far from over powered we are as a whole. And as stated above, the thrill of being so low on hit points, and having a huge fury bar, is an extreme rush, regardless if you win or lose. Thats what compels many of us to Brutes. The thrill of victory riding on the borders of death.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Man, that sez it all right there. For whoever it was with the erroneous impression that Brutes are "The most powerful AT in the game" you might try playing one for the first 20 levels or so. Save yourself some time though and go find the thread in this forum about the guy's experience with 35levels of DM/DA - he codifies the downsides really quite well.

We're addicted to SMASH beacuse it really is life or death out there when Fury is High and everything else is below 40% or so.

Hell, even my /invul brute with heavily slotted DP would get people asking why I was running around with low HP all the time.

    Cause I'm too busy SMASHING!

But seriously, I started a fresh DM/EA last night because I couldn't hang with the PinkPomPoms of Death combined with the BlingBlingArmor from Invuln. don't get me wrong - I LOVED the SMASHTASTICNESS of EA, but the look just wasn't evil enough for me Heh.

(pops 2 purples in hopes that flames about DM/EA not being a good combo go whiffing by in silence)

((honestly I have no idea if it will be good or not, anyone with some tips - other than "DM sucks reroll" like the dude was saying over and over last night, just cause he hated it on his scrapper - is welcome to pipe up))

Anyway seriously - Brutes are friggin fun, but far from the most powerful AT - even at this particular moment since relative power is a moving target in all subscription based games.

Additionally, in a game like this "power" is a function of Build Skill (tm) - of which I have very little, ask me about /regen scrappers cause that was pretty much my schtick in CoH - but other than that my BuildSkill(tm) is pretty much BS.

A well configured build in this game has much an effect on your "power" as does your choice of AT and sets - but that's just me.
