Quote:hmm you post makes me happy "Discworld" by Terry Pratchett - you must see the two BBC mini-series. I have them on Hard drive and you can get them from Pirate Bay.Yes, yes, odd thing to bring up, but I have finished reading all my Discworld novels and felt for something new and/or different... Okay, still in the fantasy realm.
Anyways, I am looking for some books where draconic characters are the protagonists of the stories. Or at least have a huge role, meaning, at least 1/3 OR MORE of the book focuses on them and their role through their position. AKA, the dragon COULD be the antagonist, but I don't want him/her to be in the darkness and just have rumors surround him/her. I want the feeling!
Also, another small requirement is, please, Dear God, suggest one where they are not pets or akin to horses. I have never been a fan of the Pern books, so something like that, please, don't suggest. And, sorry if I seem picky, but here are some books I have read akin to something I am interested in: Dragon of the Lost Sea, The Fire Within, and The Enchanted Forest Series.
Remembering then, I realize most are more like children’s books, but I had fun with them. I would not be opposed at all to something MUCH more actiony or full of drama. Of course, the main thing is that the dragon has a personality of some kind that you love, hate, love to hate or hate to love. It can be a villain, a hero, or something mixed into the story for some reason, but not a pet-like creature.
Thanks for any help,
With Love,
Me! <3
P.S. I posted here since this is the forums of my server, and know many creative/cool people are here and... it wouldn't fit anywhere else in the CoH board, since the only General Discussion is for things CoH-y.
as for books with "Dragon" Characters. thats sort of hard when asking for good, but here is one its older and you may have already read them,Quote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_Gate_Cycle The Death Gate Cycle is a seven-part series of fantasy novels written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

edit: actually the 2 mini series where done by Sky1 but Americans have never heard of that Network. -

Any suggestions? I'd appreciate the assistance.
Only thing I can say as a Computer Engineering student, dump Vista use XP or 7, 4 months after its release.
ask any proper tech junkie and they will say the same..
((why 4 months? because that's how long it'll take for the big bugs in 7 to be gone, and for COx to be fix'd so it works well with it)) -
Quote:You bring up an interesting point, why all this for GI Joe? I mean I have been and always will be a "Trekie". In addition, when the recent Star Trek Movie came out I did not see this kind of outrage over the major brake with known star trek Lore, in fact, I didnt even see anyone post about the one brake in lore that was not able to be shifted with a alternate timeline that JJ Abrams had said he did.I have to laugh at all of the seriousness at which people are taking this. This isn't saying that people shouldn't be a bit disappointed if something doesn't quite fall into a preconceived mold.
Black Kingpins; 2 different Sabertooths between the 4 X-Titles; the birth, life and death of every major comic book villain in the span of 90 minutes, etc... it happens.
It even happens within the original medium; not just in its translation to a different one.
There's really no justification for rallying against an interpretation that isn't 100% true to canon when the source material is littered with parallels, skews and outright changes.
And it really isn't logical to pay $20 to see something that is exactly like something you've already read... especially when it comes with accompanying pictures.
The big thing to remember is that most of the source material was cheesy as heck to begin with and to expect any translation of cheesy material to a different medium with the intent of making it not cheesy... well, lol and good luck with that.
The actuality of the problem is that some people are just too fanboish about fiction to be grounded in reality.
I liked TMNT (movies and cartoons) despite it's lack of it's source material's edginess. Super Mario Bros sucked... don't remember the DD movie. Street Fighter sucked because it tried too hard to keep to character. Blades I & II rocked. I liked the first 3 Supermans and every incarnation of Spiderman (cartoons). Don't like the trend of ensemble villains in comic book movie sequals (original Batman movies and Spiderman). Watchmen was darker and more put together than the latest Batman installment. Iron Man was almost flawless. Spawn sucked, DareDevil sucked, Punisher sucked (1st one... but it had ninjas); villains made Elektra tolerable. X-Men 2 was the best of the trilogy... even with no Psylocke. Transformers was okay even though Jazz wasn't a badge AND he got gutted within 90 minutes. I admit, I got miffed when they scrapped 'canon' when they released Alien 3 but I still liked the movie (hated Resurrection). Got a kick out of Speed Racer but won't watch DB: E.
But point is; I tend to take the presentation for what it is and the stuff in the GI Joe movie isn't any more off-base or unrealistic than anything from the cartoons.
If going on an alternate timeline the tech could be rationalized in both the movie and the series Enterprise because of the next generation movie First Contact but move forward in Star Trek history from Enterprise yes the Tech would be better than the 1960s show. Nevertheless, even with this, you could never justify how a Federation crew 30 years before Captain James T Kirk had his first run in with the Romulan Space Empire knew what a Romulan Star ship or its crew looked like. And yet in the opening of the recent Star Trek Movie they knew instantly that the hostile ship was a Romulan ship and they didnt react that a Romulan looked like a Vulcan. -
Quote:***spoiler***Given my feelings about there being a deeper story behind the aliens, I'm not sure Chris coming back in three years would be back to save District 10 or Wikus.
Not to say he comes back with an invasion fleet but with enough fire power to ensure the safety of the next batch of refugees.
One point I really didn't understand was why make a biomech suit which has all these cool ways of killing people and then offer to trade it in for a bunch of cat food, instead of just get in the mech suit and TAKE the cat food. Surely they knew they were being taken advantage of by the Nigerians.
Maybe the prawn have a hive mentality and their leaders took sick leaving the rest unable to cohesively think for themselves?
Many questions....ah well, I for one welcome our new prawn overlords and have many cans of Puddi Tat cat food for their enjoyment.
Well my thinking is to figure what kind of ship was it, and why did they come to earth to live in the first place.
The ship was most likely a colony/Exploration ship which do to some error they lost food storage or plainly just food stores. This may have forced them to take nearest shelter, i.e. Earth. Their bad luck was to choose South Africa as port of call. Therefore, the weapons were not as important as just surviving; see the Nigerians even with their homicidal tendencies did supply food.
Now who was this Chris? He/she was the captain and once the crew was off the ship he/she could make the return journey with the limited supplies.
What will happen in 3 years? I would say not an invasion of Earth but definitely an Invasion of South Africa, and most likely a real War where the rest of the Earth would be hard pressed to pick a side.
Why do I say this? Because Chris was not outraged by his treatment, until he saw the genetic research. The redeeming feature was in his twenty years he had obviously studied the Earth and our geo-political situation. In addition, he saw firsthand that humans have the capacity for change (both emotional and genetic), and the human emotion of self-sacrifice and he knew about the concept. So what happens in three years? There would be Second contact, with an overwhelming military force that would both protect the "prawn" colony and the establishment political relationships with humans.
and maybe the conversion of humans in to "Prawns" -

Quote:...umm no one really wants to know the truth, but most hollywood screen writers are Sea manatees, and push balls with words for the producers who only care about the pre-sale of a film, if the movie makes its desired money then they make a squel.. Why do Hollywood screenwriters think they have the new special sauce to add everytime they get their hands on an old beloved franchise? Monkey-munchers.
the only time film people care about the product is when they want to get silly awards (sundance, oscar, ... ect).
so use this formula to see if you can build a hollywood movie
A=plot B=actors/actoress C=Budget D=Director
if B is = to or greater then C then Hire D who is = C+B pre-sale movie so that C is four times greater, hire second cousin to write script pay him peanuts forget A
if B is less then C then hire foreign D and pay known B for one days work, hire D to co-write script with second cousin forget A -
just saw it, OMFG, it was good, really good, but see it in a theater, because it has a pace that would be hard to watch at home. as the reviewer posted, it starts in the documentary style and makes subtle shifts as the story goes.
personally i think the action that builds up towards the end really makes the film, and gives it the push from good story to excellent film. plus seeing the popping bodies was awesome.
and to top it off South Africa was the perfect back drop for it. -
Quote:only thing is, they already did that.I'm starting this petition in the spirit of loving the City of Heroes game and wanting to open up the opportunities for more creativity by the players who actively invest in and participate in the game.
Many character names are "reserved in the abyss" on game accounts that have not been active since before Global Handles were instituted. The folks who have those accounts who have long-since not returned have not invested their time, energy, and funds in this game through thick and thin. It is the hope of this player (and the players who have /signed below) that the character names sitting unused for so long by these long-stagnant accounts are freed up for the active community to enjoy.
It is a shame that inactive accounts/players who have not been back since before Global Handles serve to limit the opportunities of committed players. Here's hoping we can have those names freed up, and the active players (and new players!) can bring some great heroes and villains to life.
Sincerely,
Space_Cop
@AceArchitect
How do I Know? simple, years ago I talked a friend into playing and he played for a short time. he created a character based on Spider Jerusalem. last month he decided to play again and he had to rename his Character because the name was removed. now, he didn't name his character something that was copy righted, and he hadn't played since before global's, so what do you think?
---
And he was higher then level 10 -
Mariel Martog - sorceress, winged (only 1 costume), black trenchcoat (1 costume)
Tiburon - free and clear, sofar
Irken - under 5 feet who isn't a child
Evil Irken - under 5 feet who isn't a child
Malkavian Who - vampire
Bhump - catgirl,black trenchcoat (1 costume)
V0ltaire - demon, winged
wow I'm not as drunk as I thought.
good thing Ninja, Elf, Pirate, Anime rip off, D&D based, numbers in Name, based on other games,
Where not in the list.

Quote:What's wrong with Cobra Commander having been a used car dealer? Jimmy Carter was a peanut farmer before he was President. The idea is that the original story, albeit far fetched, had merit (in the GI Joe universe.)
The background were not 'tweaked'. They were paved over. Cobra Commander WAS NOT the brother of the Baroness. The Baroness wasn't the fiancee' of Duke. Duke wasn't every going to be brothers with Cobra Commander.
But I can see where people would rather smile and nod because culture has dumbed down things to the point where it's okay to ignore canon.
Let me ask you this:
If CoH totally broke canon and rewrote the entire thing to the point where it was nothing like we've learned, would you be happy? Or should I just say, "Hmm.. you've played for 5 years and pumped your money into this product... too bad! They aren't making this for you anymore... it's now marketed to a whole new demographic. Get over it."
Umm if they made COH movie they would... granted like in the other "Based on" films it would be familiar but different.
Personally as a child during the 80's and having a father who worked for the US Intelligence community. When i would play "GI Joe" with my friends I would play Cobra and I did play them as Backed by the USSR, and I would always kill the "Hostages" usually "Star wars" figures and a camping cooker....What i am saying those of us who played with "GI Joe" and had any understanding of the world realized that "Hasbro" was making the show a little to nice.
Mean while Marines where dieing in Beirut, passenger faeries where being Hi-Jacked, bombs going off in Airports, and the USSR was invading Afghanistan. and these news stories would come on TV 30 mins after GI Joe.
So this time the folks at Hasbro and the film writers made GI-Joe international, made the soap opera relationships. That is what happens in films. Personally I like the way they did it, Destro becomes the Mastermind Villain who Hires a genius to build a better weapon, and this time M.A.R.S. is funded by every country in the world, including the USA.
this time Cobra Isn't yet an organization with a name, and the evil baddies are a secrete division of M.A.R.S.
Theses are changes I can live with. just like the Changes in the X-Men and Spiderman Movies, not so differant from Blade when it came out.
and did you like 300? Beowulf? Superman? Watchmen? all of these where changed from the source material.
granted Watchmen was fairly close, and the changes worked Very Nicely. -
I find it funny how some folks haven't figured out that a hollywood movie will never follow the "known" history on anything...unless its filmed during the event, and even then I doubt the story is actually true.
Look up Historical films, find a top 10 list, then compare the movie to the history....
such as:
http://www.the-top-tens.com/lists/be...-or-people.asp
the only two even close to the event where done by Spielberg, and he did the films to prove to the academy that he could make historic films, with almost zero fictional content. -
Over the years the lore of GI Joe has been varied and contradictory.
GI Joe started in the Second World War, continued through Korea, all as a light hearted look at being a soldier. With the release of the Action Man GI Joe they didnt want to get political so they didnt really say who the enemy was, but hinted at Asian. During the eighties they didnt want to make the Russians his enemy so they created Cobra, they didnt have a back ground on Cobra except they where a terrorist group bent on global domination, they made sure not to point a finger at Russia as the backers of cobra (as a kid I thought this was silly). The comic creators made several attempts to make a background to include making cobra commander a Used car salesman who scammed his way to a fortune (this didnt work IMO), the current Destro background has always been the same (his background works). So the movie producers obviously wanted a solid cobra commander with backing that works and a lore that gives him a reason for what he does.
My point is simple when it comes to GI Joe lore. There is none.
