    My First Toon...

Two reasons why they won't do it. First, for the reason Bramp stated. It keeps RMT vendors from powerleveling and selling characters.

Second for a reason that is in the EULA you click through each time you play. Legally only one person is supposed to play on each account. If parents are paying then the parent is supposed to get a separate account for each child who plays. Devs have stated that they will overlook this rule in the case of young children playing on their parents account but they still won't transfer characters.

If somebody were to send in an official request asking that their characters be transferred over to their account from their friends account then NCSoft could legally ban the friends account for violating the EULA. They likely would just say "no" instead but depending on how bad a mood the person who handles the request is in, it could happen.
  2. I enjoyed wanted, both the Graphic Novel and the Movie. They were two completely different entities but both were fun. The movie fits with Millars original concept of not having the villains in costume. Millar himself loved the movie and I agree with him, the studio couldn't have duplicated the print version because the owners of the rights to all those super types would have sued the crap out of them. It's true that they weren't villains from any standard comic book universe but they wouldn't have gotten away with it any more than Wolferine would in CoH.

And for those who need the solution when GG isn't around.

Go to the top of lift H. Just North of the lift you will see a dead tree. There is a slight depression in the ground next to the tree and in that depression is a tunnel entrance. There is also an entrance on the other side of the dam (which is the one most people will give you) but unless you have the Arachnos costume power or some invisibility ability then that entrance is pretty much suicide at the level you get these mission. However if you want to commit suicide then exit the opposite side of the dam. Turn right and in the Arachnos facility you see there is a tunnel entrance.
  4. I'm boggled. I can only believe that those voting for Kolchack have never seen Brisco.
  5. You have Nvidia so try this. Start up services.msc. Do this by typing services.msc into the little search box after hitting the windows button.

Right click on Nvidia Stereoscopic 3d driver service. Select properties and then stop it from running and change it's startup type to manual. It's only useful if you have 3d glasses hooked up to your video card and yet it is set to run all the time. It can also be triggered to max out cpu and ram for seemingly no reason at all.

Also run these two programs and post the results here. CoHHelper and Hijackthis
  6. I also used to do something that I haven't in a long time and I'm not sure if it works any more. I would fly and rescue hostages from mobs all around Atlas. Then after rescuing 20 or so I would head to the top of the Globe and land. The rescued citizens would swarm the plaza trying to get to me and give me some inf. Most get stuck in the pools but some make it up to the platform and keep climbing and jumping off Atlas's leg in an attempt to reach me.

Also if you have a partner in your boredom and both of you have fly then get a good distance apart and both of you start following the other. Thanks to the delay in stopping flying it acts like you are tied together with a bungie cord and you keep yoyoing past each other.
  7. I hang out in my Freak Tank costume in the middle of a group of Freaks. Then when I see a player standing out of aggro range I turn on ninja run and charge them. If they happen to be hovering above instead then I turn on fly and zip at them.

    Screen Freezing

It's a Vista and Win 7 issue. The easiest way to deal with it is to tab past the window and pick it the second time around. Kind of like a combination lock where you have to go past the second number and completely around to it again.

A fix that might work for you though is to go into the game directory and right click on each of the .exe files there. Then click properties and choose the compatibility tab and check disable desktop composition and visual themes.

I have a serious advantage - I have the system IN FRONT OF ME.

One more time and I am typing slowly so you may understand - Issue 16 - PERFECT 90+ FPS with busy areas bringing me to 40ish at times. Issue 17 downloads - I go from 70+ FPS at absolute minimum settings to at times 3 FPS just panning or crossing a zone.

In missions it can go from 100+ FPS to 1 FPS at the drop of a hellion. I am not the only one. In every team I have been in the last month or so we have mapservers, lag, rubberbanding and random DC's.

I would appreciate you ignoring me in the future Fitzsimmons and I will do you the same courtesy.
Ok Hades, let's see you answer this one without frothing about me being a rabid fanboy and apologist. I picked up a new motherboard and AMD processor lately but my video card is still only an 8800GT. I am on a wireless bridge with a signal that has to travel over 100 feet. I max most of my settings for the ooh shiny effects but keep shadows and AO off because those still hit my performance hard. I also never drop below 30fps. Not while panning, not while crossing a zone and my fps are always much higher in missions.

The last time I experienced rubberbanding was back when the /sync command was instituted and even then it was only a couple times a week. The last time I mapserved was about a month ago when Steel Canyon crashed on Virtue. Other than that it happens to me maybe once a month and is usually related to Comcast's crappy performance out here.

Now lets put these together. A problem that affects everybody is definitely a universal bug. A problem that doesn't affect everybody can absolutely not be a universal bug. Correlation does not imply causality. If every carton of Smith Brothers Dairy milk you open is spoiled then there is a possibility that the dairy produces only spoiled milk. If multiple people then report that they buy Smith Brothers milk all the time and it's perfectly good then yelling at them and calling them dairy apologists does not mean that you are right. It doesn't matter if you have equipment that can analyze the milk right down to it's molecular components.

To follow your lead I'll type this slow so you understand.

If you have problems with frame rate, lagging, and dropped connections at minimum settings but other people can use high settings with absolutely zero problems then an in game bug is not the problem. It may be server related, it may be isp related, it may be related to your uber computer. But it is not a bug.

    Login Problems

Move cohupdater.eu.exe to your desktop. Go into your game directory and delete coh.checksum, cityofheroes.exe (or cityofheroes.eu.exe) and cohupdater.prv. Then run the updater on your desktop and point it at the correct directory for the game. At this point it should only download the .exe files and then "fix" files. When it's done you can delete the updater on the desktop since there will be a copy in the game folder.
  12. Also it is fully intentional and sensible that the camera keeps looking forward when you hit D. Q and E are turning left and right. A and D are strafing left and right. It's like a movie or tv show where somebody is running to the side but facing forward and shooting at the enemy. You can also turn by holding down the right mouse button and moving the mouse back and forth. It can be much quicker and more precise than the keys.

If you are looking for crowded and friendly then Virtue is the place. If you are looking for crowded and friendly/complete jerks then Freedom is the place. There are a lot of good people on Freedom but there are also a lot of people whose sole reason for existence seems to be to mock people who ask for help.

If you play a hero then start in Atlas Park, not Galaxy City. Both are starter zones but very few people start in Galaxy so it winds up seeming like the game is devoid of players to newcomers who start there. If you are going to play in groups then pretty much any archetype is easy and survivable unless your team leader is an idiot who insists on setting the difficulty to maximum for "leet xps". If you are going to solo then the best hero archetype is a scrapper. It offers durability almost as good as a tank and damage almost as good as a blaster.

And no matter what you choose don't worry about death. For the first 10 levels there is no experience debt and all that happens is you either use an inspiration to revive yourself or just teleport to the hospital. And don't worry about leveling fast. As long as you are having fun that is what matters. There is no real epic end game content that you have to get to like there is in so many other games. It's all about the journey, not the destination.
  13. I would prefer a Legion series or a JSA series.
  14. I7 processor is great but I personally would (and did) go with an AMD Phenom II.

The only place where the I7 scores better than the Phenom is if you are using an sli video setup (two video cards connected and running in parallel)

Heading off to work right now but I'll get back to this topic later.
  15. Ok Wolf. The problem is that your drivers are 5 years old. The problem is also that you only have an intel video solution rather than an actual video card but the reason for the graphics crazy quilt is the old drivers.
  16. The answer is yes logging in when already logged in will kick you off. When that little "this account is already logged in" message pops up just clicking the log in button a second time will kick the account that is already on line. And when you see the message when you are logging back in after a crash then it is kicking off the instance of the character that was logged in before. Some players have used this to get around the 30 second countdown.

My suggestion. Check all servers and see if there is a character you didn't create or if one was logged in recently that you know you didn't log in yourself.

    Game Crashing

If your system is shutting down and not rebooting then it's overheating. This game stresses and overheats GPUs much more than any other game on the market that I have seen. Every time your system shuts down from overheating it is damaging the GPU and possibly the CPU. Maybe not severely but it's like the death of a thousand cuts. Dead is dead no matter how long it takes.

Do like panthera said. Make sure the vents are dust free, get a cooling pad. If this doesn't work then you have two choices. One, get a new computer that can play the game. Two, stop playing the game. If you choose option three (keep playing the game even though the computer crashes) then you will be getting a new computer anyway because your old one will die.

Do exactly what Hyperstrike said and we might be able to help, but I have further comment on this. Intel video is really bad with Open GL and that is what this game uses. A majority of the other video games use directx but the CoX series use opengl. Recently the video coding for the game was updated because the old poorly patched version couldn't support the ultra mode updates. The intel chips worked with the old version which actually wasn't running correctly. They don't play well with the new version however. This is a side effect of intel's poor coding on their drivers rather than any problem with the game coding (though that itself is far from perfect.). So if the problem is driver related you would be better suited complaining to intel rather than NCSoft.

And realistically it doesn't make sense for either company to bother. Intel chips don't come on advanced video cards, they are part of integrated video solutions. If a computer has a video chip rather than a video card then it is not intended to be a gaming system. Yes you can game with them but it's not optimal and not its intended use.

Asking for NCSoft to fix their game so a non gaming laptop can be used to play it is like asking the state to install bike lanes on the freeways. Asking intel to fix their basic chips and video drivers so they can be used to play advanced games is like asking Schwinn to include motors for free on their 10 speeds so that if you need to you can get up to 60mph and ride on the freeway. Sure either would be helpful to a small percentage of people but neither is worth the investment to those involved.
  19. Looks like a driver issue. Also the problem you would be seeing with overheating would more likely be the infinite planes issue where certain pieces of geometry like sections of wall or sidewalk or even costumes extend all the way to the edge of the screen in an expanding or contracting plane.

Post the results of the CoHHelper program here and we'll be able to see what video card you have and what drivers.
  20. I enjoyed the movie for what it was. Entertainment.

Yes the lead character was an obnoxious self serving unlikable scumbag and no he was not at all likable at the end. Sure he seemed to become sympathetic towards the aliens but you see that sort of thing all the time with bullies. When they themselves are bullied then they become sympathetic towards their former victims... until they are back on top again then it's back to their old ways.

I actually considered this character refreshing. Their are plenty of books where the main characters purpose is to be hated by the reading audience but not much of the same in movies.

I really enjoyed the special effects. The CG in this movie works very well. After seeing the movie a friend of mine said that they expected more CG special effects. I was kind of boggled by this and pointed out that the aliens themselves were CG, at which point he got an "oh yeah..." look on his face and in fact said "oh yeah.". This movie was the first I've seen to get to the point that you can be watching pure CG and completely forget that's what it is.

Probably what got me hyped most of all was the final battle suit battle scene. It gave me major hopes that within just a couple years we could be seeing a battletech type movie with believable mechs. I thought the suit was actually far superior to the ones in Avatar. And who doesn't love a good pig cannon?
  21. That seems odd. I've never had any problems seeing my own invisible characters myself. They are just translucent but you can still easily make them out. Maybe it's got something to do with your video card and settings. Try uploading a screenshot of your character when invisible so we can compare it to what we normally see.

I don't want to do anything that breaks any rules. So I guess it is a suggestion after all.

I guess I figured with all these travel power stealth IO's, people not wanting to be barely visible see-through would be pretty common.
Actually you are right, it is pretty common. Lot's of people work hard on their costumes and want those costumes to be able to be seen all the time. Unfortunately however that's just how the stealth powers work. So the options are either live with it, choose a character without stealth, or design a costume that looks good when stealthed. One of my characters won a costume contest with an outfit designed around being basically invisible so it can be done.
  23. 512 megs in this game? That's like trying to run in the Indy 500 on a unicycle. Nightmare, you will always lag out and crash while loading missions or zones. Pretty much the only thing you have a chance of loading is the character creation screen and it looks like you can't get to that either. Honestly your computer isn't up to playing this game. Hopefully you are just on a trial and haven't purchased the game yet. Your RAM is way too small, you shouldn't have less than 2 gigs. Your processor is too slow and your video isn't good enough either. If you still want to see if you can get in game then try starting it in safe mode. If you decided to play the game based on the system requirements those requirements have greatly increased since the original release. WoW which is several years old has basically maintained the system requirements for the original game but the City of series has kept pushing it to a higher level with every update. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Still waiting for your reports Elflore.

    Game sticks

Choose do a system scan and save a logfile. When the program is done it will pop up a notepad screen with all the needed information. Just copy and paste everything from there.

And there is something else I thought of. When you are in game type the following
    /netgraph 1
Down in the lower right corner of your screen you will start to see lines. They will be green, yellow, or red. What you are hoping to see is short green lines. This means you have a good network connection to the server and that your ping time (time for the signal to reach the game servers and be returned) is short. If you are seeing red lines it means that data is being completely lost somewhere in the network. If you see what amounts to a large red block during those times that everything freezes then that means it's a network connection problem. To turn off the netgraph just type
    /netgraph 0
