I gave CO a serious chance (about 100 hours worth) back when it first launched. I eventually came to the personal conclusion that CoH was the better game, at least for me at the time. I haven't played CO since. I'll probably give it one more chance after CoH shuts down completely on the theory that after a few years it might have improved enough for me to better tolerate it.
It's great that there seems to be a chuck of the CO forum community who seems supportive (for whatever reason) to have those of us who've been playing CoH to come join their ranks. I have no doubt there's a significant number of people who genuinely love CO and would love to have more people come to play their game. Sadly that friendly encouragement does not undo my current opinion that CO is still the lesser of the two games and the only reason I'd be playing it again is that it'd be the closest existing alternative to CoH. *shrugs* -
Quote:Yes I was actually well aware of -everything- that went wrong with the Kelley show and I honestly doubt it would've lasted very long if it had actually made it to broadcast. Still, the fact that everyone had a silly insta-hissy fit over the initial costume designs for the show more than likely didn't help the situation, all things considered. Sometimes the fanatic fans of something are their own worst enemies...Oh, if you've seen the unaired pilot you'd know that there were MUCH bigger problems there than just fan-nitpicking over the costume.
A supposedly heroic publicly known idol of millions who openly flouts the law, kills at the drop of a hat and tortures injured criminals for information despite HAVING A LASSO THAT COMPELS ANYONE TO SPEAK TRUTHFULLY...!
/nerdrage
Yeah. The costume issues were the least of their problems.
I'm in wait and see mode for now.
This is why even though I don't strictly like the idea of a Smallvilled Wonder Woman I can at least accept the possibility that it might have a more realistic chance of succeeding as a show simply because it'll side-step some of the more berserker rage from the rabid fan-base. If the purists can be deflected into disregarding the show as a "real" version Wonder Woman to begin with then maybe the rest of the world can get an interesting show to watch despite them. -

Quote:Eh, making INF in this game was always just a "game within a game" that was never strictly necessary - it was just another way to have fun. Right now I'm sitting on about 40 billion horded across all the characters of my accounts, but I played this game for the first 4 or 5 years with probably less than 100 million total. I had plenty of fun back then when I was "poor" too.3.5 billion, and I've been here since launch! With 2-3 accounts...
Man, I suck at making inf.
<.<
Watching this forum over the years has always impressed upon me what a knack I JUST DO NOT HAVE for making inf in this game.

Quote:And we should all keep in mind that they could have completely shut the servers down for good in that one day too.It only took them a day to close the whole damned studio.
Frankly we should probably consider ourselves lucky that they decided to let us play (under any circumstances) for 3 more months. The fact that we might no longer be able to get new updates, renew VIP subscriptions or buy more points is relatively minor all things considered. *shrugs* -
Quote:I'm sure the hardline "purists" out there will hate this idea and will be prejudiced against it sight unseen. On the face of it, I'm goin' "NOOOOOO!"
Wonder Woman comes from Themyscira. Therefore, this could never be Wonder Woman. She might be someone else... something they can draw lore from like Superman, but NOT Wonder Woman... Who would that be?
But that's the purist in me... if I said that about Batman, I wouldn't have liked what Nolan did to it... and I like it. A lot.Joker wasn't Joker as we'd recognize him... but he was, all the same. Same with Selena, 'Robin', Two-Face...
So in that respect, I say... go for it, CW. Let's see what ya got.
I've always liked Superman and Wonder Woman as characters but as I implied before I was never really a fan of Smallville so if I didn't like that kind of Superman I'm not really sure I'd enjoy a similar "youngified" version of Wonder Woman either. Still, I would try to keep an open mind about it if this show happens regardless. At this point I'm pretty much in the "some kind of new Wonder Woman on TV is better that -no- kind of Wonder Woman on TV" camp.
Quote:In this version Diana will have a crush on this boy Steve Trevor only she won't know he's secretly gay so there's the angst cuz he only sees her as a friend.
P.S. One interesting thing to consider is if this does turn out to be a "costume-less" version of Wonder Woman that at least this show might avoid some of the mindless bickering that helped torpedo the Kelley attempt - it'd be hard for people to complain/argue about a new version of her costume if she's always just wearing normal clothes. I suppose there would still be people who'd be outraged that she wasn't wearing -any- costume, but at least people wouldn't be split over super-stupid stuff like whether her boots ought to be red or blue. -
Well despite the fairly craptastic attempt to bring Wonder Woman back to the TV screen last year it appears that the CW is going to be giving it a new try. Seems like they want to take the successful formula of Smallville that worked well enough for Superman and apply it to a younger, proto-Wonder Woman.
As always I can see the pros and cons of this idea. By going with a younger "Wondergirl" focus there's no need to try to find some kind of unobtainable Lynda Carter clone who'd be the perfect mix of great actress and Olympic athlete who'd embody everyone's idealized vision of a mature Wonder Woman. Basically with the character set at a younger age there'd be much more leeway in the type of actress they could get for the role.
Of course if they completely drop the whole Themyscira Island and/or Magic Lasso bit and base this show in a "non-costumed oriented" world the way Smallville was then I could see it coming off way too much like a direct Buffy the Vampire Slayer ripoff. No matter what they do the entire idea of doing "Smallville with a girl instead of a boy" is going to seem a little rehashed no matter how well done it turns out to be. Maybe the whole thing is just an attempt to latch onto the Hunger Games phenom. *shrugs*
I honestly don't really like the idea of giving Wonder Woman the Smallville treatment. I actually thought the idea of Smallville was in itself a semi-dumb idea and never understood how it survived so many seasons. But given the fact that it did in fact last so long I suppose it's not too surprising that they think something like this might work. As always time will tell. -
I'd buy it regardless.
But as far as how much I'd play it long-term would probably depend on if it allowed some kind of LAN or major mod support. After 8.5 years I've pretty much experienced all of the content you can get from it via solo play. The only thing that would keep me playing would be modding or being able to have -some- kind of multi-player mode. -
The simple answer: Yes, I would've easily pay $19.99 a month per account to keep this game going.
The slightly longer answer: I've been paying for my main account every month since April 2004. Even when you add up that overall cost and compare it to the total amount of time I've actually played the game I imagine I've only spent like a quarter per hour at most. In terms of cost for entertainment paying $0.25 an hour is getting something for practically FREE as far as I'm concerned. In that light (and if it would've actually helped) I would have easily paid $50 a month and still gotten my money's worth. -
Quote:For all we know the switch to the F2P CoH:Freedom system might itself have been a compromise that avoided a shutdown of the game as early as last year. It could have been a "last chance" maneuver that was given some time to work but ultimately didn't save the game. *shrugs*Blaming "freeloaders" is a massive failure of reasoning.
If the "freeloaders" were what caused the game to go down, then the root cause would then be that Paragon went F2P without managing to monetize free players adequately.
So NCSoft didn't kill CoH - it was suicide. -
Quote:Yeah well you did finally come to your senses about the Empath badge so you were never -that- bad in my book overall. We have EVERY POSSIBLE TYPE OF PLAYER, and in the end I know they all LOVE City of Heroes because they ALL STICK AROUND, even the ones that apparently we could do no right in the eyes of!
It's been a wild, wonderful ride. Up until this game it would've been amazing for me to have said I'm still playing such-n-such computer game continuously for 3 or 4 months. After 8.5 years it'll be hard to let this one go. I'm sure you'll find something new to challenge you MMO-wise. Take care.
Quote:And I want everyone to know, in my entire time posting on the forums, I have never, ever, put ANY player on Ignore (even though I have been sorely tempted). When I read a thread, I would read EVERY POST in it, everyone was entitled to their opinion, and I would be doing them a disservice if I didn't at least read their complaint (even if I didn't agree with it). -
While this idea might be "fun" for us this would all be extra work for people who basically no longer have jobs anymore.
As crappy as the idea of this game coming to an end is we should probably consider it fairly amazing that it'll linger on all the way to Nov.30 in the first place. Besides speaking of the impending end of the world on Dec.21 how do we know that this shutdown isn't already in response to some "insider info" they have about coming events. -
As an extra P.S. I at least did manage to reach 300 non-AE souvenirs on my main badging character. I realize most people probably never cared about them but I realized a while back that they were yet another thing to start "collecting" in this game.

Quote:For what it's worth I've known/seen at least 6 or 7 people who managed to get Passport without ever going to the EU servers. There was always a number of theories as to why those people "got lucky" but I don't think I ever heard a definitive single reason for it so your theory about it is as good as any.Since nothing will come of me saying it now: yes, I have Passport, and no, I've never been on the EU servers. I'm not sure exactly what caused it, but I think it was a fluke related to entering the City of Villains beta code and a Hero Gear Kit code at the same time.
To be honest, I've always had mixed feelings about this, but I have a pretty low self-esteem and having this badge made me feel special. Failing to report my badging advantage has eaten at my conscience, though, and is on a (thankfully short) list of what I consider to be failures of not doing the right thing. I'm sorry if it ever caused anyone grief.
I have no idea exactly how many people it happened to but like I said I saw more than seemed reasonable to make you absolutely unique in that regard. I'm sure the Devs probably knew about it but maybe still considered it "rare" enough not to care.
I'd would've never felt that bad or guilty about having it - just consider it one of those little funny "badging footnotes" to the long history of this game.
Same here. Guess we weren't so "lucky" with that one.
Quote:The only badge(s) I have left to earn are Triple Threat and the resulting Master of Magisterium badge. I currently have 1396, and am hoping to have maxed out at 1398 by the end of the long weekend. -
Actually this semi-mysterious "aura code dump" now makes some sense in light of the horrible news that the game is getting shut down. Almost seemed weird to me that they would suddenly throw thousands of these codes out there for no apparent reason - now we know the reason.
Well enjoy them for the time we have left... -
Quote:Yeah I had an annual subscription paid up through April 2013 and at this point I don't really care about that money. If what's left of Paragon Studios actually figures out a way to refund me that money that's fine, but I'm not really going to hold my breath for it.I'm sure they are going to keep your money. They did it with all the previous games they've closed. What they offered in the past was free time on one of their other games, however since all of those, except for GW2, are now free to play so I'm not sure what they will think of.
I just renewed for 14 months, 5 weeks ago so if the end is November 30, I will be owed around $90 of compensation.
I had 8.5 years of great play from this game. Very sorry to see it go regardless of the monies. -
In this context when I said "Devs" I generically meant "people in charge who can do these things." Technically you're correct - but that distinction's not really important, especially considering the news we got yesterday about the game in general.
-
Just want to chime in and say it's cool the Devs decided to free-up a bunch of these codes. Hope everybody who wanted one will get one.

Quote:I got set off by your remarks? This really is hilarious btw. How long did it take you to think it up?
I have an agenda?
I went on a tirade?
I'm trying to derail the thread?
I can "sort of?" read your responses?
I'm uspet you killed cat my cat or something?
I put words in your mouth?
Well, at least I wasn't the one to take this discussion a little too personally... -
Quote:I actually didn't cringe too much over the "Nuke the Fridge" scene. Sure it stretched everyone's suspension of disbelief to the infinite limits of the Universe, but like you say Indy has always been portrayed as basically a kind of larger than life, Willpower-based, Scrapper-type character anyway. He's survived things in every movie that are probably a step beyond "realistic" already. As for the Nuke the Fridge scene. Is it possible? Yes. The odds in your favor? Well, even if the fridge can survive the blast (which it could), the only real part one has to think on is, what are the odds Indy could survive being tossed that far and high into the air, come crashing down, and still be alive?
If you watched the other Indy movies, you know Indy survives terrible odds like that, ALL THE TIME!
It's his gimmick! In fact, I believe the Indiana Jones RPG was all about that.
For what it's worth I thought that movie had other general weaknesses that made it disappointing and lackluster - the Nuke the Fridge scene alone didn't "ruin" the movie for me.
Quote:I'm surprised Star Trek: The Motion Picture isn't on there. We called it "the Motionless Picture" at the time, since it was two hours of crewmembers sitting on the bridge staring in awe at things.
I ultimately didn't hate Star Trek: The Motion Picture that much, but I'd clearly acknowledge it had some pacing problems and there's basically no way a studio could even dream of getting away with a movie like it in today's ADHD-leaning post-MTV mindset. -
Yep the collective idea of a "SG name change token" has been something players have been suggesting pretty much ever since SG bases were added to the game.
What's really frustrating is that ever since the Devs introduced the "Red Star" super leader rank to the game the idea of allowing Red Star leaders to buy a token for the purpose of renaming a SG seems incredibly intuitive/obvious to me. Everytime this topic comes up we always discuss all the pros and cons related to it and eventually most people come to realize that a SG name change token could be implemented fairly straightforwardly with very little risk. The Devs already have the means to change SG names via Dev-only commands - they do this to change names that have been reported as offensive or otherwise unacceptable. All we need is a way for players to access (in a controlled way) that same rename command.
I really have no earthly clue why the Devs continue to drag their feet on this issue... -
Quote:I'm not going to bother to over-analyze your reasoning here. It's clear that I've rained on your perma-Light Form parade and for that I apologize.[...] please make a new thread on the kheld forums. Something titled "I hate Light Form and everyone who uses it." I'll be sure to drop by.
You keep thinking I hate Light Form. Just because I see no overwhelmingly good reason to "perma" it doesn't mean I hate it. I simply realize that you only need it up maybe 5% of the time, regardless if you're talking about having it on a SO build or not.
Light Form is perfectly fine as an "AV fight" power and it's good that you're recommending it as such. I'm simply picking on your original point that "[you] find that Light Form makes the human shields redundant to the point where there is no need to take them" in a thread where perma-Light Form was never really an option to begin with. I'm glad you finally came around to realizing (and evolving your posts accordingly) that Light Form is not the "magic bullet" for all PB build situations. -
Quote:Don't mean to nitpick but I think it was an already well established rumor/suggestion that players want the Black Knight costume pieces. Didn't really need this particular coffee talk session to keep that rumor alive.(and, so much for this coffee talk being a waste of time and no new info, etc :P )
Besides for all we know Zwill was just frantically pausing on the idea about asymmetric costume parts in general because maybe there's a bigger update in the works that may be more sweeping than just one costume set. -
-
To be perfectly honest a pure "Post Apocalyptic" costume set is not quite my cup of tea either. But I learned long ago that the costume system in this game works best the more options it has regardless. Some of my better costumes are unexpected mixtures of pieces-parts of many different sets. So even though I may never make a 100% complete Post Apocalyptic costume I suspect I'll eventually be able to use some parts of it for other ideas.
