Wonder Woman given the Smallville spin

Well despite the fairly craptastic attempt to bring Wonder Woman back to the TV screen last year it appears that the CW is going to be giving it a new try. Seems like they want to take the successful formula of Smallville that worked well enough for Superman and apply it to a younger, proto-Wonder Woman.

As always I can see the pros and cons of this idea. By going with a younger "Wondergirl" focus there's no need to try to find some kind of unobtainable Lynda Carter clone who'd be the perfect mix of great actress and Olympic athlete who'd embody everyone's idealized vision of a mature Wonder Woman. Basically with the character set at a younger age there'd be much more leeway in the type of actress they could get for the role.

Of course if they completely drop the whole Themyscira Island and/or Magic Lasso bit and base this show in a "non-costumed oriented" world the way Smallville was then I could see it coming off way too much like a direct Buffy the Vampire Slayer ripoff. No matter what they do the entire idea of doing "Smallville with a girl instead of a boy" is going to seem a little rehashed no matter how well done it turns out to be. Maybe the whole thing is just an attempt to latch onto the Hunger Games phenom. *shrugs*

I honestly don't really like the idea of giving Wonder Woman the Smallville treatment. I actually thought the idea of Smallville was in itself a semi-dumb idea and never understood how it survived so many seasons. But given the fact that it did in fact last so long I suppose it's not too surprising that they think something like this might work. As always time will tell.

I honestly think the only reason I continued to watch Smallville after the first season was because I kept hoping Clark would (Super)man up. I did stop watching it for a year or so after Lana showed up and was a witch who could do kung fu because of a magic tattoo or something, though.

Speaking as someone who has been RP'ing the daughter of the Praetorian version of Wonder Woman and Superman for a couple of years ( a homage to Project: A-ko) I'm completely open to this idea.

Honestly, I'm open to ANY strong female protagonist super hero series!

On the face of it, I'm goin' "NOOOOOO!"

Wonder Woman comes from Themyscira. Therefore, this could never be Wonder Woman. She might be someone else... something they can draw lore from like Superman, but NOT Wonder Woman... Who would that be?

But that's the purist in me... if I said that about Batman, I wouldn't have liked what Nolan did to it... and I like it. A lot. Joker wasn't Joker as we'd recognize him... but he was, all the same. Same with Selena, 'Robin', Two-Face...

So in that respect, I say... go for it, CW. Let's see what ya got.

Heinberg, who wrote the pre 52, pre J Michael Strazynsky Wonder Woman relaunch, is behind this. He knows the comic character, I'm willing to give him a chance.

In this version Diana will have a crush on this boy Steve Trevor only she won't know he's secretly gay so there's the angst cuz he only sees her as a friend.

I'm sure the hardline "purists" out there will hate this idea and will be prejudiced against it sight unseen.

I've always liked Superman and Wonder Woman as characters but as I implied before I was never really a fan of Smallville so if I didn't like that kind of Superman I'm not really sure I'd enjoy a similar "youngified" version of Wonder Woman either. Still, I would try to keep an open mind about it if this show happens regardless. At this point I'm pretty much in the "some kind of new Wonder Woman on TV is better that -no- kind of Wonder Woman on TV" camp.

Yeah I'd hope this isn't going to be a blatant attempt to lure the "Twilight Tweeners" into a show geared totally towards them. Buffy-styled teenaged angst can be fine in small doses but a Twilighty-Wondergirl could easily get out of hand.

P.S. One interesting thing to consider is if this does turn out to be a "costume-less" version of Wonder Woman that at least this show might avoid some of the mindless bickering that helped torpedo the Kelley attempt - it'd be hard for people to complain/argue about a new version of her costume if she's always just wearing normal clothes. I suppose there would still be people who'd be outraged that she wasn't wearing -any- costume, but at least people wouldn't be split over super-stupid stuff like whether her boots ought to be red or blue.

Maybe what they'll do is have Diana show up with amnesia so she doesn't remember her true identity and then gradually discover who she really is. Could be a fairly low budget way to have a Wonder Woman show without making a whole Island Paradise.

Considering he was also behind both "The OC" and Young Avengers... I'd say he has some experience.

Not sure how faithful or even good this is going to be, but I agree we need more strong, well-developed female protagonists out there. As long as it's better than that stupidly wrong David E. Kelly attempt or the JMS reboot debacle... *shudder*

Oh, if you've seen the unaired pilot you'd know that there were MUCH bigger problems there than just fan-nitpicking over the costume.

Yeah. The costume issues were the least of their problems.

I'm in wait and see mode for now.

Now... this... this... could work. Be interesting to see how it does... perhaps some big bad knocks her silly and into orbit.... and crashes down on Broken Bow, Oklahoma or something.

/why there? The producers are obviously Star Trek: Enterprise fans...
//What do you mean, get out of the thread?
///They killed it when it was just gettin' good, IMO... Ah well.

The fact that you remembered proves I don't really have to say it again.
My job is done - at least until a new Wonder Woman show -actually- happens.

Yes I was actually well aware of -everything- that went wrong with the Kelley show and I honestly doubt it would've lasted very long if it had actually made it to broadcast. Still, the fact that everyone had a silly insta-hissy fit over the initial costume designs for the show more than likely didn't help the situation, all things considered. Sometimes the fanatic fans of something are their own worst enemies...

This is why even though I don't strictly like the idea of a Smallvilled Wonder Woman I can at least accept the possibility that it might have a more realistic chance of succeeding as a show simply because it'll side-step some of the more berserker rage from the rabid fan-base. If the purists can be deflected into disregarding the show as a "real" version Wonder Woman to begin with then maybe the rest of the world can get an interesting show to watch despite them.
