Quote:To be fair the idea of Wonder Woman being used to sell makeup doesn't bother me -that- much.Leaving out whether or not I think Wonder Woman make-up is a problem or not; why is it such an insult to the character?
I don't find it insulting as much as just a tad bit stereotypical and uninspired.
I just figure if they wanted to pick anything in the world to sell using the likeness of Wonder Woman that the idea of makeup was probably not the most "politically correct" choice because of all the historical and cultural connotations it drags up. Then again I guess I'd rather see Wonder Woman linked to a line of cutesy "girl power" pre-teen makeup than see Batman linked to a line of unisex/emo/Hot Topic goth makeup. *shrugs*
BTW, that visual image of the Batman "squirt gun" is just disturbing on sooooo many levels.

Quote:The classic phrase "The best defense is a good offense" applies perfectly here.there are various things to do, most of which have been suggested already, but the big thing to emphasize over and over again is Mez Them Before They Mez You!
MTBTMY!
Most ATs out there rely on slotting up defense powers and/or Mez resisting effects to protect themselves from critters that Mez. Controllers/Dominators are unique in that their main defense (against all kinds of damage really) is their ability to Mez others before they themselves are Mezzed.
Once a person accepts that basic concept and plays towards that strength they'll usualy find that Controllers/Dominators are usually just about the EASIEST ATs to solo with especially by the time they are level 45+. It's probably been years since my main Fire/Rad was chain-Mezzed while soloing - I honestly can't remember the last time it even happened.

Quote:Yes there is a precedent. But the real question is whether there's a need in this case.I know that quite a few people did earn the old ones. My point was just that changes have been made before to badge amounts, and, I'm sure, that changes will made in the future to amounts needed. We just now have precedent.

The top end epic badges were finally reduced because virtually everyone came to agree the original requirements were ridiculously too high. For example there were serious mathematical estimates behind the idea that it would've taken the average player over 10 YEARS of continuous daily effort to earn the original Empath via "natural play". That was simply idiotic.
On the other hand I think you'd be hard pressed to make that same argument for Day Jobs, especially now that almost everyone who cares about them for their main badging characters very likely has them done already. Yes waiting 21 days (a value that was already a reduction for what it originally was in the beta) for a Day Job badge could be considered "annoying" to some people, but it's no where near as problematic as the epic badges were. Trying to compare the difficulty in getting these two sets of badges is like trying to compare night and day.
I'm not going to sit here and assume the Day Job badges will never change at this point.
But let's just say if they ever do get reduced I'm going to be incredibly surprised.

Quote:Only since 2008? Only since I12? Heck I've seen people suggesting getting more costume slots since 2004.It's an old suggestion, 2008 if I'm not mistaken, just after i12 I think. I can't recall.
In an ideal world, I'd rather not pay for it either. The amount of customisation this game gives us is a huge selling point so I agree it'd make sense to capitalise on that. However, as I said in the original suggestion, booster packs seem to be the way we're going these days. And yes, I'd still buy it too as I'm a sucker for costumes.

One of the very few things that "other superhero MMO which launched in August 2009" did that I've been dying to see copied here was the ability to purchase costume slots for characters. I'll continue to hope that the Devs of this game finally decide it was a good idea and do something like it here. -
I like the ferry boat idea. There could be 3 locations for this in IP:
A) one at the north end of the zone (near the Rogue Isles sub makes the most sense)
B) one at the south end of the zone (probably somewhere around the SE corner to be near the Bricks entrance)
C) one somewhere close to the current tram stop (near where the helicopter for the Statesman TF would work)
Having a ferry like this would promote the idea of this zone being a water-based port zone. -
I'm not strictly against this idea, but I think instead of getting permanent "non-combat auras" it might be more practical/useful to just suggest getting more emotes to do these kinds of things. I can think of a number of situations where I might not want to be forced to have an aura on even in non-combat situations (like while standing around in the markets).
Having access to more emotes would allow people to manually choose exactly when their "non-combat auras" are active or not.

Quote:It might prove to be "better than nothing" as far as promoting Wonder Woman. But I suspect it's also a symptom of precisely why we don't currently have a Wonder Woman TV show, Wonder Woman movie, and/or no Wonder Woman cartoon. People in the industry basically don't know how to "sell" Wonder Woman as a modern character in 2011. As Arcanaville mentioned she has always embodied a complex mixture of concepts and I seriously don't think Hollywood producer types really have any idea what makes her tick as a character. Since she's hard to "figure out" she gets passed over for easier productions. But back to the topic in hand -- girls like to wear make-up. It's that simple. And if girls like to wear make-up, there's no reason they shouldn't wear make-up that came from a container merchandised with a great character like Wonder Woman. Because sadly, right now there is no Wonder Woman TV show, no Wonder Woman movie, and no Wonder Woman cartoon. Wonder Woman probably has very little Q-rating with pre-teen girls. I'd like more girls to be interested in Wonder Woman. This make-up line will likely do little to aliviate that problem, but it's better than nothing.
Sadly I suspect Wonder Woman will continue to remain in limbo TV/movie wise.
And as you say it's hard to say if this makeup thing will actually prove to be good or bad for that. *shrugs*
On one hand I don't see anything strictly wrong with the idea of a new line of Wonder Woman makeup for pre-teens. In a free market world people are pretty much free to try to make money anyway they can. But on the other hand I can see how this move was, at best, fairly questionable from a "promoting the right public image" for Wonder Woman into the future.Quote:Wonder Woman has always been a paradoxical icon. I think she's the uncommon example of a bridge between classical feminine values and more modern empowered values, and that has always made her a complex subject. Look at all the feminists lining up on opposite sides of the debate on her costume revamp. Some say it was long overdue because her appearance is an obviously insulting impractical image. Some say it is insulting to change a cultural icon that was a positive role model for many girls growing up for superficial reasons, and it also suggests that strong women have to "dress down" to be taken seriously.
I think what sometimes gets overlooked in debates over Wonder Woman's appearance is that she has, generally, projected a "I don't give a **** what you think I look like" attitude: she looks like that because she wants to look like that, and she would look like that even if she was the last person on Earth. And that resonates. Its not really a bad message to send. They say only Nixon could go to China, and I think only Wonder Woman can be portrayed as attractive as the artists and writers want and few people would question whether she was selling out to men, given the fact she's so often portrayed as thinking of men as pets who can talk.
Wonder Woman makeup is just another in a long line of difficult to classify circumstances for a bondage princess that is the equal of Superman. Personally, I have no problem with it, although I can also see the humor in it.
To me the idea of peddling Wonder Woman makeup could be taken as being as misguided as the NRA trying to convince PETA that hunting is harmless by promoting a line of rifles for pre-teens to go out to shoot their favorite bunnies and squirrels. It just seems like the people behind this makeup promotion could have come up with something, anything, to sell based on Wonder Woman that would have been much less of a political "hot-button" issue than makeup. I don't know what that would have been offhand, but surely something better could have been devised.
I guess there's some "humor" in this situation from a social commentary point of view, but sadly this kind of thing just tends to keep us from getting -any- new Wonder Woman TV show/movie made.

Quote:Then again I was one of those "dedicated" people who actually earned badges like Empath, Leader and Immortal -before- they were reduced. Ultimately I agree that those badges were reduced because for the most part they were ridiculously too high, but let's just say your point is semi-wasted on me.You could argue this exact point in regards to the previous epic Achievement badges like Empath and Leader; they eventually did cave in and make changes. If they are willing to make changes on things that they previously had said that they would never change, who knows what the future holds?Quote:If the Devs were ever going to tinker around with this they would have done it like 18 months ago.

Besides I don't think the Devs have ever told us they would never change ANY badge. I think if they are ever finally convinced of a need to change one they will. My point was that for most people a reduction for the Day Job badges would have made much more sense 18+ months ago. Unlike the silly too-high epics which very few people were able to get there's really no difficulty for the vast majority of players to be done (or almost done) with Day Jobs right now. There's no serious comparison between the two. My guess is that people who are currently done with Day Jobs probably couldn't care less if the Devs changed them at this point or not. *shrugs* -

Quote:There's no such thing as a "permanent" level shift. You can unslot it and slot a lower level version of the power. These level shifts would effectively be "permanent" if you wanted to keep yourself slotted with Rare or Very Rare Alphas. Obviously anyone could unslot them, but then you wouldn't be under the possible level shift nerfage either. Who in their right mind would bother creating a Very Rare Alpha and willingly NOT want to use it, unless of course it had a stupid disadvantage like the one that's being suggested here? Are you ever going to want to willingly shift down to say a Common Alpha once you have a Very Rare crafted? I didn't think so...Quote:Incarnate abilities can be removed at any time, so there's nothing permanent about any buffs/nerfs associated with them.
We are going to be end-game GODS once we have high level Alphas slotted. The Incarnate system is going to effectively "break" the balance of the game whether the Devs want it to or not. As a reward for all of our hard work creating these gods why would we not be able to roll over these critters very easily AND get good rewards for it at the same time?Quote:I don't even understand how you can not see the answer to this question. High-end Incarnate level power is going to make existing level 50 mobs the equivalent of gray con mobs. Sure, they might not mechanically be as bad at hitting and damaging us, but we're going to roll over them like they aren't there, and that doesn't even include the level shifts.
Now stack level shifts on top of that. Does it really make any sense to you that these increasing powers should just mean that we get faster and faster at earning existing reward levels off of existing mobs? That doesn't make any sense to me. What makes sense to me is something like what happens when we outlevel mobs now.

The end of the article says the scientists still have to "figure out what is special about these storms and the precise role lightning plays in the process".
Well that part is obvious: clearly the extra-dimensional alien invaders are using thunderstorms as antimatter particle beam weapon platforms to attack us. They are like big fluffy tanks floating around the world slowly zapping us back to the stone age.

This is pretty clever timing for another Double XP Weekend. This'll give people about two weeks to give DCUO a try, get completely bored/disgusted by it, then come back to CoH and get caught up with any XP earning they missed out on.
-
Quote:There are people out there who like to set their mission difficulty settings up as high as possible to maximize their rewards. If something like incarnate slots gave us permanent level shifts which effectively gave us permanent reward "nerfs" as you're implying I'll bet there'll be people out there who'll try to AVOID any future content that would impose permanent level shifts on them.I will be in no way surprised if it causes standard level-based rewards to be reduced. Think about it. Why would they give us the same reward for defeating stuff that's now explicitly easier to defeat? It would be like having a mode that gave us the same XP(debt)/Inf/Prestige as fighting +4s for being on the +3 setting.
I'm not going to openly complain if they leave the rewards alone, but I'm going to be pretty shocked.
If does work this way, there's a definite downside from our view. We would have to accept reduced rewards (against existing content) to gain the other benefits of the more rare slots.
I just can't see the incarnate system institutionalizing reward nerfage. What's the point of getting one of my 50s up to being a tip-top uber incarnate when it'll only be able to earn like +0 level rewards? I'd be better off (under that system) keeping my 50s as non-incarnates, or at the very least non level shifted.

Personally I remain unconvinced this game actually needs any further INF sinks. But even if it does I think the idea of introducing the age-old MMO trope of Equipment Durability/Repair costs would be the least desirable or workable way to do it.
The concept of Durability makes sense in old style "loot" based D&D styled games where everyone is basically using swords and armor. But I really don't think that square peg can be pounded into the round hole of a superhero MMO. It'd be like trying to force people to use tennis rackets while playing soccer. It just doesn't apply.
If this game wanted to get serious about applicable INF sinks it would offer things like personal apartments (created with potentially millions of INF with ongoing rent costs), more costume/temp power recipes, purchasable costume slots (which would encourage more costume design spending) and so on.
Mandatory INF sinks (like this Durability idea) would only hurt newer players and/or those players who don't already make millions a day from buying and selling on the markets. *shrugs* -
Quote:I think in the future we'll probably see some ultra high-end incarnate only content that'll have critters higher than level 54 to challenge our god-like fully loaded incarnates. But I doubt we'll ever see those kinds of boosted enemies in any currently existing content, even for the current "Master" level TF/SFs.I actually hope they raise the hard-cap level 54-54 on the AVs in those TFs. They're quite easy to get Mo as is without the shift, and I can't imagine how easy it will be for my Fortunata to tank them as a 50(+4).
You have to remember there will always be level 50 characters in this game who are either not incarnates yet or (for whatever reason) have chosen not to become incarnates. There will always be a need for "standard" level 54 AVs because, believe it or not, not everyone can easily do the Master TF/SFs and many people still find them more than enough of a challenge for them.
I suppose this will mean that eventually top-end incarnates will be able to do the current Master level TF/SFs fairly easily. Such is life.

As someone who likes to use /settitle binds to assign different badge titles to different costume slots this is an interesting idea. But I just don't see it happening either as a Vet Award or otherwise. It's one of those things that would probably take non-trivial Dev effort to implement and ultimately wouldn't be used by enough people to justify it. *shrugs*
-
Quote:It may be easy enough to declare/label things like this any way you want. But there's really no guarantee what you or I would consider trivial, cool, quantitative, qualitative, controversial, etc. will match up to the way the Devs would describe these things. And since they are the ones who arbitrate what becomes Vet Awards we as players don't really get much of a vote in the matter. *shrugs*It's actually not that subjective. There's a certain amount of judgment involved but it's easy to declare things as quantitative or qualitative with little controversy. I just mentioned trivial and cool to include powers like the map tool because it is the sort of feature that only gets implemented as a vet reward and is specifically less of a cheat to a veteran who knows maps.
There are also quite a lot of rewards that generate little controversy, like tailor discounts and a major buff to how much you can carry. They're quantitative. The map tool is another even though it's qualitative, for reasons I just went into. -
If the Devs ever got around to expanding the costume system so that we could buy extra costumes slots for characters this would be even less of a non-issue.

Quote:You seem to be trying to claim males can't write decent stories that would either appeal to women or have well-written female lead characters. You're making a sweeping generalization and trying to imply it's a factual certainty. Most writers are male, so they write more male oriented stories. Gail Simone writes more female oriented stories because she is a woman. Her another example: Even though he claims to be a feminist, Joss Whedon best written series have been Firefly and Angel, because it is more masculine and it is in his nature to grasp the material better. Other more female "oriented" still faces the same pit falls other non-feminist writers commit. Though he seems to write strong characters, most of Eliza Dushku's "acting" his her running around wet and screaming.
Obviously a male writer (like Joss Whedon for instance) has more personal life experience empathy with the male characters he writes about. But that doesn't automatically mean that he as a male can't write stories about/for women as well (or even better) than any given female writer could.
To suggest an author can only produce their best work when writing about characters of his/her own sex is actually another form of sexism. Good going there.
-
On the other hand it might be realistic for a villain to have "forced labor" from any faction. There should not be any game limitations to something like this. If you want to be a hero who'd only have "heroic" gladiators working for you then only pick those gladiators. I'd rather not have the game limit my choice on something like this for a purely arbitrary reason.

Ironically Praetoria right now is a little bit like how leveling in CoH/CoV was a few years ago. Without speedy "trick" ways like farming AE or boring brain-dead ways like jumping in the sewers Praetoria actually encourages you to play through the mission content it provides. What a shame.

But seriously even without any obvious way to sprint to 20 it really doesn't take -that- long regardless. If anything I have more problems with accidentally outleveling things I want to do there rather than making it to 20 ASAP. -
I'll second what WoefulKnight said. As I understand it the only Prestige that "counts" for that badge is Prestige characters earn from critter defeats. Prestige you get from people joining your SG and INF conversions don't count. This keeps you from effectively "buying" that SG badge with personal INF.

Quote:I think the fact that those of us who actually cared about collecting all the Day Job badges are now finally finishing them off points strongly to the conclusion that it'd be semi-pointless for the Devs to change how Day Job badges are awarded at this point. Why would it matter if the Devs changed the Day Job requirement from 21 days to say 14 days when perhaps 98% of the people who would care about that already have all the Day Job badges?Anyway, I also wanted to say that I'd be open to modifications to the Day Job system.

If the Devs were ever going to tinker around with this they would have done it like 18 months ago.
Doing anything about it now would be a waste of Dev effort. -
There's nothing really "wrong" with Praetoria now. It would be cool if it eventually gets level 20-50 content added to it. But beyond that there's nothing to fix. It doesn't need "double XP" treatment any more than Paragon City or the Rogue Isles do.
If you consider it a "jail sentence" to be stuck in Praetoria then don't run or start any characters there. *shrugs*
