You're missing the big picture. Once the server protocol is decoded, you can create an implementation in whatever language you want. But right now we don't HAVE the server protocol; it's reverse engineering time. I'll take a server written in Javascript running in IE6 right now, if it means we have a working implementation that can be later optimized however you see fit.

releasing their tech specs to us so that we can reverse engineer the server and client
I have been following a project aiming to do that for several years. Back in February 2011, when the GR sales numbers were released and they were really bad, I predicted COH would probably not last past 2012 on their forums. Unfortunately, I never got many people to give a crap about a server emulator while the live game was running.

There is only one guy coding the server emulator, nemerle, but he is (very slowly) active. He released the third alpha last month, with a working costume creator and loading the mapserver (though you can't move or anything; it just loads). It's using an old version of the client (circa issue 3) in order to get the basic protocol decoded, and then add the new features on top of that. With the live servers closing soon, capturing real traffic between the client and the server for the latest client version is essential if this thing is going to go anywhere.

Any coders who want to help, look at segs.nemerle.eu/forumz

Starting another COH emulator when one has already made (very little) progress is foolish. We don't have much time to gather the information on server traffic we need, so we need to get a bunch of coders interested in this NOW.
  3. I am not exactly hard to find, seeing how I use my real name everywhere, but I'll just throw leandrotlz@gmail.com into the mix here.
  4. They won't do that. They didn't with Tabula Rasa, Auto Assault or Dungeon Runners. When NC closes a game, it's gone.

Unless of course you have a bunch of coders in the playerbase to make a server emulator.

There IS such a project already in progress, which I've quietly followed for several years: Super Entity Game Server. They are using an old client to try to reverse engineer the COH protocol, and currently it boots into character creator; mapserver loads, but you can't move in the map or anything. If you know any able coders who want to help on such a project, funnel them to SEGS. It's better than starting from scratch, and it prevents fragmentation.

When the live servers close, projects like SEGS will no longer be able to capture traffic data in order to reverse engineer the protocol, so the time from now to server closure is critical. Spread the world. SEGS has only one coder who's been slowly putting out about one alpha per year. Throwing some resources that way (where resources = coders, mainly) it's the best chance of keeping COH running.

Dang, has it been already three years? I remember your departure thread from like, two months ago. I might have to check that I'm not accidentally travelling close to light speed in my sleep and getting all time dilated.

    Welcome back, AC!
  6. I already have the badges, but I'll show up and join if you need extra bodies.

  9. I believe the easiest solution would be to just forget the whole "months paid" metric and just go with registration date. You registered in June 2005, you're a 7 year vet; you registered in June 2010, you're a 2 year vet, regardless of billing status in the meantime. I said this back when the badges were introduced in the beta; they're "veteran" badges, not "time paid" badges. The other badge series (the old Veteran ones) already tracks how much money you threw at the game.

I made an Announcement in the Steam Community about it, anyone who uses Steam and is on the group should get a popup about it when they log in.

COH is a 32-bit Windows program, and as such, it *can't* use more than 2GB. Memory addresses are stored as 32-bit numbers, which means 4GB is a hard limit (because 2 to the 32 = 4.2 billion) and Windows splits that in 2GB for application usage, and 2GB for Windows itself. That means each 32-bit application gets its own 2GB of addresses, and shares the other 2GB with Windows stuff, regardless of how much memory is installed.

Note that there are certain versions of 32-bit Windows that can recognize up to 64GB of RAM, using something called Physical Address Extension, but that doesn't change anything on the application side: applications still "see" 4GB of addresses, of which they can use up to 2GB, and the other 2GB is for Windows stuff.

(Edit: wording was too technical, I dumbed it down.)

Don't be so quick to blame the computer. I have a quad core with 8GB of RAM and a Radeon 5770, and I haven't been able to complete the mission yet, even using single target attacks. The reason is latency: I normally have about 300ms of ping to the NCsoft servers, and it doesn't handle it well when a lot of mobs target me specifically.

If I summon my pets before entering the mission, they remain with me, and they can attack the giant army with no lag at all and a perfectly green netgraph. The second *I* attack the army directly, netgraph gets stuck in the red, and a mapserver crash is extremely liekly.

That shouldn't happen. It prevents people from making time travel story arcs featuring Statesman before his death.
  14. Kinda late followup (I was taking a break from the game and came back for i23). I didn't get the badge automatically, but I sent a petition and GM Roland took care of it. So, all is good!

    Hello,

Officially, an account needed to remain open during the complete time of the program between December 1st and March 31st. I do show that your account had a minor lapse in its VIP status, which caused it to be passed over by the automated process.

As a courtesy, I have granted the Loyalty Rewards to your account since there were only minor lapses during the program. Let us know if you have any further questions.

    Regards,
    GM Roland

Once you reach a certain point, more HP stops making a fight challenging and starts making it drawn out and stale.
You should play a character that *doesn't* lend itself to sitting there clicking the same few buttons over and over, then. I play an illusion/empathy controller, and no matter how long the fight, I am always doing different things -- refreshing buffs, dropping pets, healing, and attacking. The "sitting there clicking the same few buttons" thing is why I can't stand playing melee/attack only characters. When your character has a variety of tools at its disposal, you never find yourself in a situation where all you can do is sit there and spam the same power over and over.

Yes, since my name is very common in Brazil I have been approached countless times, and I've teamed with them occasionally. The NCsoft distributor in Brazil (Level Up!) is a lot better at selling the game than the Argentine distributor (Edusoft) ever was. There are many active Portuguese supergroups.
  18. Not only does Martin Henri leave a generic boss behind to fight his battles for him, but he doesn't even bother to activate him!

(This is Brother Hammond's story arc, not an AE mission!)
  19. This is still happening after today's patch (I restarted the arc, it didn't help). I am going to send a petition and hope a GM can autocomplete that mission for me.

Don't hold your breath. The last contest that was open for international players was four years ago (the City of Commercials one, in 2008). Too much legal stuff in the way, apparently.

I tried again right this second. Result: Lost Connection to Mapserver. Screenshot here.

I most likely shouldn't bother trying again until there's a patch. The current build most definitely doesn't work for this particular character in that particular mission.

Possibly. What processor do you have? If it's a low-midrange processor, it's time to move on. Remember that if you just change the motherboard, you will likely need new memory too, as DDR2 motherboards are hard to find right now.

Both boards state "Memory Standard: DDR3 1066/800". His board, GA-EG31M-S2, has 2 x 1.8V DDR2 DIMM sockets. The memory he currently has will not work! Add some 8GB of DDR3 to the shopping list.

That said, I will vouch for the ASUS board:

Never had a problem with these.
