Bring the magic of the movies to City of Heroes Freedom by creating a super hero-themed movie poster and you could win a twelve month subscription to City of Heroes and have your poster featured as a billboard in the game!

You must be 13 years of age or older and a legal resident of the United States (excluding Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. territories, military installations and commonwealths), Canada (excluding Quebec) or the European Union as of as of Wednesday, March 14th, 2012.

Just to clarify, do these posters need to relate to CoH directly (e.g. contains CoH characters, landscapes or content), or can they just be "super-themed" in general. Like fiction inside of fiction?

Hey,

We'd appreciate them being directly related to City of Heroes. However, if you come up with something unrelated that does not violate trademarks, etc, that you think would be appropriate, you're welcome to submit it.

Best,

For the image, the OP says PSD is the required format, which I believe is photoshop. If that is the case, hypothetically, all you need to do is take a few screenies and paste them in there, and give it some oomph with the tools.

Ok, last question, I swear. Does this have to be landscape, as the dimensions suggest, or is portrait orientation okay to use? I only ask because most posters are portrait.

Same question here - a few concepts come to mind, but they're mostly portrait (as most movie posters are). So, is portait OK ?

So, at its core, this contest is open to people with a legal copy of Photoshop?

Not really -- I do all my cover work in PhotoImpact which CAN save in PSD format -- I checked. I'd expect other software packages to be able to do the same, presumably as long as they can do layers in some manner.

The portrait aspect got me too -- If anything I'd do it 768 by 1024 and just rotate it 90 degrees before sending in... IF they're planning to be used in game which I think likely, they'd be upright there. (Come on those movies have been playing or coming soon for years now. What movie in real life gets held over for YEARS?)

As to the subject matter I'm thinking something about recent events in the last couple years might make a good poster -- even stylized. Aside for that a comedy or romantic comedy set in a superhero world such as Paragon City doesn't necessarily have to mention anyone in game specifically. Personally I think that someone in Paragon would want to see something they DON'T see on a daily basis -- movies after all are escapist entertainment, and they see hero stuff every day.

Google "movie poster" and look at images -- you'll quickly see lots of trends. MOSTLY close ups overlayed some unique distant shot. Sometimes a stylized image. Some times abstract. Usually with a tag line of some kind. And a stylized Font for the movie name itself -- which in some rare cases might be a logo unto itself. After that -- Credits and a movie rating.

I wonder if all the movies would have to be rated PG-13 or less? If someone did a Horror flick, which usually are R rated, in the Paragon universe -- What would THAT look like. With the likes of some of the creatures roaming that world, WHAT would scare the people of Paragon in a fun way?

Of course with people of fantasy and alien races, some stories might be possible that are difficult without resorting to CGI, might be done easily in that universe that haven't in ours.. But it would have to be public domain material to escape the "other copyrights" clause of the rules.

I've got a few ideas mulling around....

That was why I asked about "fiction within fiction." I find it hard to believe the citizens of Paragon want to keep watching Statesman and the like on the screen all the time. There's plenty of fun ideas for fictional hero-themed media in the CoH universe to be had.

I've googled Movie posters some more and found some landscape variations. Most are similar to their portrait counterparts, save having graphics and logo OVER the artwork directly. Most of the portrait variations are a little more graphic.

Of course are these pre-release posters? Or post release posters -- The latter would have Reviewer comments ("FIVE STARS" --Peter Clark - Paragon Post) Pre-Release posters usually have rating pending, or the Movie release dates on them. If you did those, it might narrow your window of in-game viewing...

The only thing I can think of is that these contest entries might appear on the BILLBOARDS instead of on the movie theatres themselves. Which wouldn't be too out of character, and give them a wider distribution throughout the game.

I see more and more why they'd want a layered view. In case they have to REMOVE something like release dates or some such that didn't fit.

The Gimp (free) can manipulate PSDs. So can Paint.NET (free) with a plugin. So can PaintShop Pro ($60).

There's undoubtedly others.

Hi all,

I am an Australian player. I lodged a support ticket asking if I was eligible to participate, and was informed "Thank you for contacting the City of Heroes Support Team. I have reviewed your ticket. I believe your question would be better directed at the community to review. This can be done through the City of Heroes forums. "

This is that enquiry. The eligibility for the contest is listed as: ""a legal resident of the United States (excluding Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. territories, military installations and commonwealths), Canada (excluding Quebec) or the European Union".

I am none of these things yet still pay monthly and enjoy the game. Australia, you know, that awesome place way south of all of most of you; land down under with meat pies, Aussie rules, cricket, and kangaroos. And City of Heroes!

Can the owners of this contest indicate if Australian players (there are a few of us!) are entitled to participate? Or can the conditions be adjusted so we can? Oh, you'd best include my new Zealand cousins here too.

Many thanks in advance.

As per the previous posters', there are good freeware programs that can save in PhotoShop format, and work in layers. In particular Paint.NET (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paint.NET), which is well maintained and definitely offers "support for layers, blending, transparency, and plugins".

Noting this, as the OP and competition suggest layers be preserved. The plug-in allowing Paint.NET to save in PSD format is described at psdplugin.codeplex.com/.

First off, love this contest, I'm a big fan of movie posters but I've got a couple of questions.

Could we get an official clarification on the dimensions, and the project?

The contest title says "Movie Poster" but in the rules it specifies "may be used in-game as a billboard" and the ratio is clearly not your normal one sheet movie poster.

Asking for official word on the landscape layout 1024 x 768, verses going more traditional portrait movie poster. And what the final product is because design elements traditionally change from a movie billboard to a movie poster (most notably credits or no credits).

Thanks,
Todd

Don't hold your breath. The last contest that was open for international players was four years ago (the City of Commercials one, in 2008). Too much legal stuff in the way, apparently.

Actually that's awesome. That's nearly dead on for traditional one-sheets, and with that I believe all my other questions were answered.

Thanks for the clarification.

If you've submitted your entry before this announcement was made, it would still qualify to win and to be used in-game as inspiration. If you want to re-submit using the new dimensions, that's fine too.

It's possible I missed this info, but are we allowed to enter with multiple posters? (Each its own entry.) I have something I can modify from last year's fan art contest, but I would like to do something new as well.
