  1. The last couple of months I've been putting a lot of effort into launching a radio station, so I decided I had to put COH on hold and not take part on the betas like I usually do, and just focus on getting this project done. Yesterday (Sunday) was the big fundraising event which we were mostly counting on to get the radio in the air by the end of the month. A ton of planning went into it from my side, and starting today, I knew I was going to have free time to come back to COH and relax.

Really lousy timing aside... the fundraiser was a complete disaster. The venue was in charge of the sound system, and they completely screwed it up (it flat out didn't work; their equipment was broken) and it didn't get started until 4 hours after it was supposed to. Because of that, most people just up and left, after poking their head at the designated time and seeing nothing going right. Once all the expenses were plugged in, the big fundraiser resulted in a NEGATIVE $5600 balance.

So, I am quite bummed. I spent a lot of time and effort in that event, and now we're worse than when we started. Usually COH is great at distracting me when things go badly, but after Friday's announcement, the atmosphere inside the game doesn't feel like a vacation anymore. It's the difference between going to visit your cousins because you love to hang out, and going to visit your cousins because you were told they have terminal cancer and 3 months to live. It just isn't going to be the same.

Half and half. It hadn't much to do with the F2P launch, specifically.

The Freedom server wasn't running Hamidon raids until late 2010. There were attempts but they fell apart most of the time, and we had no raid schedule. So I jumped to Justice server and asked some folks in there for help, and thanks to them, we got a regular crew doing them on Freedom. Most of the time, I was leading. I tried to get other people to lead, but very few were interested.

So after running Hamidon over and over for months, I was completely burned out and needed a break. I stopped playing regularly. Others took over the Hamidon raids (Starborn Alliance still runs them), so fortunately it wasn't all for nothing. But after leading Hamidon over and over for months, the game just never appealed to me the same. I started to avoid teaming. I got back online with every issue release to do the new content, but then I left again.

It's my own damn fault; I'd still play very regularly and team a lot if I hadn't burned myself out. Whether the game was F2P or not would have made no difference.

    >Were you enough of a vet to have earned free access to Controllers, Masterminds, the Auction House, AE, Super Groups and IO's without paying a sub fee?

Yes, had access to everything you listed except AE (which I don't think ever becomes free). AE is another thing that I was thrilled about at first, but then the farming crew turned it into a joke and it lost appeal to me.

    >If you didn't have access to any of the above things, would you have quit playing, or would you have re-subbed?

Like I've said, it would have made no difference. I started taking breaks (didn't even join the last beta) because I burned myself out of the game.
  3. What I'd like the most is for the story bible to be published. There's a lot of storylines that were started in game but then never continued as priorities shifted, and the SB most likely says where those were supposed to go.
  4. I was sleeping. My phone started ringing like the gates of hell had opened and woke me up. I grabbed the thing, wondering what the emergency was, and read messages from several players who contacted me at once to let me know.

Obviously I wasn't going back to sleep, so I got up and spent until 5am in Freedom, fighting tentacles.
  5. For the Community. The friendliest and most helpful bunch of players I've ever met. Too many times I logged in just to chat with global friends.

Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.
  6. Per TonyV, the Titan Network folks have been trying to reverse engineer the server for years with little success. Link.

He thinks a breakthrough can't come in three months, but hey, there's actually a big motivation for it now...

I posted what he said on Freedom, only I was upset so I posted it on the wrong forum. Here it is.
  8. There have been several, but the one that I nagged Pohsyb the most about was "Do not send buff numbers" and "Do not send buffs at all". Those two options came from me bugging Pohsyb repeatedly during one of the issue betas, because people on slow connections were being booted from locations with too many NPCs like Dark Astoria, and causing client crashes. While I have suggested other things that got in, those two changes are a huge deal to me because they meant I could keep playing in teams without crashing regularly, and every time someone had crashing issues in mothership raids and such I would tell them about those options and it often helped. It was a great little QOL fix.

NCsoft_Freitag: Hello Freedom, I'd like to ask you for a few minutes of your time.
NCsoft_Freitag: I know it's not much, but I wanted to come here and tell you how amazing it has been working with you guys. You are the best community we could have asked for, and you have made the experience for all of us who worked at Paragon Studios truly special.
NCsoft_Freitag: Your creativity, your passion, your drive to make us achieve more, and your love for this game is inspiring to all of us.

    Black Scorpion: LITTLE MOIST PIECES
NCsoft_Freitag: This game would never have become what it was without YOU.
NCsoft_Freitag: None of us wanted this to happen this way, and we're really sorry it did.
NCsoft_Freitag: I hope you all will remember the amazing things that have happened over the last 10 years. The fantastic people who you have met, the great experiences you have had, the leaps and strides this game has made.
NCsoft_Freitag: This game has touched everyone who has played it in some way, big or small. You guys made this game what it is. We just gave you the tools. You made it. For that, we will forever be grateful.
NCsoft_Freitag: You guys are the best community we've ever worked with, and we want to make sure you know we love you.
NCsoft_Freitag: I'm sorry I can't answer all the questions you have. It's my hope that things will become clearer in the near future.
NCsoft_Freitag: Thank you for listening, and thank you for your time. I'd like to visit a few other servers.
NCsoft_Freitag: Thank you all so much.
And here I was doing so well... who is chopping onions under Atlas's statue?
  10. Thanks, didn't know regular time cards would work.
  11. This news caught me while taking a break (I was going to resub once i24 went live) and now I can't resub as a VIP. However, I heard that applying a game code from a retail box would reactivate VIP status. Unfortunately, I already have I think all of them; can someone tell me if I'm missing something I can use to go back to VIP?

    - COH Retail (original box)
    - COH Collector (VIP badge)
    - COV Collector (the one with the cape)
    - Good vs. Evil Edition (Pocket D porter)
    - Mac Special Edition (Mission teleporter)
    - Architect Edition (super booster thingy)
    - Going Rogue

I think it's possible the Good vs. Evil Edition is from the "Item Pack" and not the actual retail box, but other than that, I know I have the items for all the boxes. Anything I'm missing that could reactivate the account? It's possible the COV retail box would work, but I don't think that's available anywhere by now. If anyone knows where I can buy it, I'd appreciate it.
  12. 1) Go somewhere in game with a bunch of named NPCs walking around, Peregrine Island is good for it.

    2) Find an NPC whose game starts with "M" and click it. It will tell you how many hours your character has walked the streets of Paragon City.

My main character, not counting time spent in the Beta server (which was most of the time during betas), has been online a whooping 250 24-hour days, nonstop. He's seen everything and done it all. Except the i24 beta. Dammit, I skip ONE beta and the game dies?!

My secondary character, who only was allowed to play when the team needed buffs/debuffs that Empathy just lacked, or when my main was unavailable due to being the wrong alignment. Still managed to get almost two months nonstop of play time, while staying a hero the whole time.

How long have you been on patrol?
  13. I already have demo recordings of all my characters, which include their costume code. I also am very adept at making new demos from scratch without ever recording anything, which I've used to make videos in the past. Put the two together, and I have all the tools I need to visit my characters anytime I want i the future -- after putting together a ton of lines of code, of course.
  14. I have it easy. I played for the story, through the eyes of just one character, most of the time. Doctor Leo, Illusion/Empathy Controller, all around good guy, and complete badge *****. I WILL keep his costume/character data saved, because I'm very good at demo editing. If I'm ever feeling too nostalgic, I know exactly what to do to make him run around Faultline once again. He also has a shiny badge he obtained by figuring out how to use Reward Merits to buy things from the store without actually getting the Reward Merits taken, thus getting infinite LOTG 7.5s for 200 merits...

Blazing Leo, my Fire/Kinetics controller, built in Issue 4 before they were farming machines. An army of imps, and enough Fulcrum Shift to crash the entire game when things got messy. A minor badge *****, he stayed a Hero his entire career. He would have been deleted if it weren't for the shiny badge he obtained after figuring out how to make a TF give many, many times more Reward Merits than they were supposed to...

Radioactive Leo, Radiation/Sonic defender. Deleted long ago. His main accomplishment was soloing the Imperious Task Force when it was new. Took six hours. Without the shiny badge to shield him, he got deleted when I decided his story was over.

There have been others, but their stories were short and lost in the crowd of heroes that is Paragon City. Many of them brought into the City just for specific purposes, when someone needed a specific build for a Task Force or whatever, and then gone when no longer needed.

    Private servers

http://segs.nemerle.eu/ - EXTREMELY alpha, and it uses an old version of the game in order to figure out the mapserver protocol before adding all he other bells and whistles. It's been worked on by a single dude for several years, but the last release was last month, so it's still active. Coders actively sought.
  16. When Going Rogue went live, I was thrilled. I was finally going to be able to swap sides and grab all the tasty badges the other side had to offer. Plus, I'd already obtained every single Story Arc souvenir on Hero side, and I wanted to get the ones on Villain side, too.

There was a problem, though: Doctor Leo, my character, hated every second of it.

He's a Hero. Always has been, always will be. Doing shady things in order to get into Grandville just made him sick, even with large justifications as of why it was necessary. I picked the least offensive Alignment missions and convinced him the switch was necessary. He fought me every step of the way. Every badge that required a villanous act, he resented me for it. Every time a hostage cowered in fear, every time law enforcement was beaten up by his illusions, Doctor Leo would look through the monitor, straight at me, and say, what the hell, Leo?

Eventually I settled as Rogue, so I could enjoy travel between both cities and run Villain missions to slowly work on Souvenirs. Only, I never finished. Two years after Going Rogue released, I still haven't finished even one fourth of the villain arcs. Doctor Leo won't let me.

So, with today's news, it's time to do the decent thing. It's time for a hero to come back home. I have apologized to a bunch of fields in a database for making him go against all his morals, and in the next 3 months I'll try my best to make a collection of data turned pixels into an screen forgive me for compromising his character so completely. No more alignment missions, no more morality missions.

From now on, he stays a Hero. Like he's always been.

  17. Thinking of taking my character back to the place where it first got into Paragon City, and realizing it doesn't exist anymore. Galaxy City was my first zone, and Back Alley Brawler my first trainer (and one of my favorite devs; did he ever get that hubcap replaced?), and I wanted to stop by to salute him one last time.
  18. It's highly unlikely the new parts could be added without having the source code for the character creator itself. Remember it wasn't just geometry, there have been new auras, the UI has been shuffled around several times, it got a brand new UI based on Qt for Freedom...

  20. Yes, but it's extremely outdated. It was going around during the Korean launch. Someone possibly still has it somewhere, but it'd be missing all the new costume pieces for the last 5 years or so.

    ******* go nuts

The only time I really wanted to go nuts and ignore moderators was when they banned talking about other games. So, um, anyone played TF2's Mann vs. Machine mode? It's fun, like a first-person Tower Defense game. Too bad it's only 3 maps.

Also, the extended ending to Mass Effect 3 was better than the first, but dammit, I wanted a happy ending. Shepherd, why the hell did you have to be a faceplanting AR blaster in the end?
  22. All my farming has been for badges.

The Lichen farm... that one is probably not as well known. Back in Issue 9, we would gather Longbow heavies from Recluse's Victory (this was before the HVAS existed) and run the Eden trial. After completing it, everybody would stay in the mission, and backtrack to the Lichen Colony spawners. They put out an INSANE amount of minion-level lichen which gave influence, XP, and drops. We'd get someone with Group Fly to fly the heavies above the Lichen, and then go to sleep. We made a billion influence overnight. That's how many badgers got the badge for 2 billion influence, before it got nerfed.

Tyrant's lava farms. Oh, I spent like 6 months soaking pets from various people in lava while healing them for the Empath badge, which was then also nerfed into something a lot more obtainable. I got 10 supergroups all their healing badges (for the base items) before unlocking the badge for myself.
