The problem with Siren's song on a traps is that you usually want to start with seeker drones which does damage. Then you drop acid mortar which damage in an AE, and leaves a dot.
Traps doesn't need siren's song when solo except maybe as an ambush stopper. That's only if acid mortar hasn't dot'd them up yet. In that situation you may have grabbed that aggro instead of acid mortar due to SS damage. Starting a fight with SS>trip mine is ok. What you want is an AE immobilize. PGT is a guaranteed stun already though.
Shock wave is fun! On that note, your better off dropping caltrops when you would like for them to get away from you. Now for the bad in acid mortar. It debuffs defense so fast that everything runs away. Knock back would probably make it more likely for them to run out of your set up area.
On a side note I haven't played my traps solo since before the vigilance changes. With Assault, I'm sitting at 50% damage bonus! -
I was finishing Lavantaria's arc, on my defender, in RWZ last night solo, +0 3 minions. Last mission got an Absolute Amazement as a drop.

Quote:Unfortunately Howl is the only note worthy AOE you will get. Well that and trip mine. Thanks, Late4Party. That's exactly what I was looking to hear - I'd thought Howl was skippable, but I was forgetting about Acid Mortar's AoE, and of course teammates. Should be a great help.

Quote:Seriously. I've got a fire/rad I like to play, but damned if he isn't the first one to faceplant in any team. My Elec/kin does a little better but not always. Looking at the boards here, there's a tremendous trend in getting your toon softcapped defense (usually to S/L). For corrs, apparently this is all about taking Mace Mastery for Scorpion Shield.
Problem is that I hate the other powers in Mace Mastery. I don't want them and I don't need them with the other holes my toons' abilities. The other patrons have powers that are more useful to me, and more of them. Which is to also ignore the whole "conceptual" side of power selection that I usually indulge in. At this point I almost feel like there is some implicit pressure to have every Corr ever have the kind of stat-building required for soft-capping, which really drains my desire to play on my favorite AT. Particularly when I'm dying about six to eight times on a basic lvl 50 alignment mish at (+1/x2, Boss on). When this happened last night, all I could think of was the endless list of comments about softcap, SoftCap, SOOOOOFFFFFTCAAAAAAAAP.
So, screw it. I'm sick and tired of the frustration, I recognize that I guess I need more freaking defense. But I hate, hate, hate Mace Mastery. I recognize that I won't get to the SOOOOFFFFFTCAAAAAAAAP without it, but anything is better than what I've got now.
Any recommendations? As far as my playstyle, I run PVE, a few TF/SFs, solo and team (more solo than not).

I leveled to 50 very fast on my traps sonic on little influence.
The only attacks you really need for leveling are shriek, scream, howl, and amplify for de-buffing. Grab everything from traps as soon as it becomes available. shirek and scream are easily chainable but not the best dps.
Triage beacon can be put off for a while but make no mistake it is 250% regen and you can have two of them out later. This is a cornerstone of your layered defense.
At 18 you get seeker drones which give you the classic traps opening (seeker take alpha>poison>Acid mortar), and when you get trip mine at 26 allow for toe bombing.
Slot for recharge. Franken slot as soon as you can. Hasten is useful as is the leadership pool. Grab a resist shield and your tough as nails. If you go villain you can get scorpion shield and easily soft cap smashing/lethal. Seeker drones add
Before you get to so's alternate between poison trap and acid mortar on quick moving teams. With Sonic you can howl every group so your debuffing -20 resist every group, regardless of your recharge.
You destroy AV's on a team before IO's. Join TF's, you will be a great asset with +def, regen and the debuffing. PGT makes Reichman cry. It will make Ghost widow, mako, and black scorpian simultaneously throw up. -
I tend to disagree with the look at the test server patch notes listed on the forum. The launcher/updater has a link to patch notes that are rarely updated promptly. Since the patch notes are, "already known", and since it's listed on the forum for the (public) beta, why not update the official page/link promptly?
Even exploits can be listed in a censored version. -

Gratz Dechs. You also win my traps/sonic defender next time I see you putting together a TF (disclaimer when I have time

Across the Marvel universe the Mutants after the M-Day Decimation are very much this. I'm not sure what happened to Jubilee in that horrid comic.
The depowered mutant I think of helping a lot is Richtor on X-Factor. He's still a full fledged member last I checked.
Brian Bendis has a book, Powers, on a hero who is depowered, and continues to fight crime. Hero becomes a cop on the superhero related crime department. It's a fun and vulgar read.

Well which one seems more fun to you?
Ok /traps will let you soft cap the hood rats with the a DEF SO in the enforcers, slotted Manuevers, ED capped FF generator, and the 2 pet uniques in gang war. Those aren't terribly expensive merit wise.
/Storm is crazy fun. Read some of the defender guides on it. I don't think MM hurricane can floor to-hit but the knock back would still help keep the pets alive. /follow the Arsonist with hurricane on? Your bruiser will be chasing the chaos but since he can't complain.... -
Hi!
I'm another long time reader and almost never post. I played on opening day and quit slightly after the roaming hazard zone sized packs of Ralaruu eyeballs in kings row put my Dark scrapper into about 6 levels of debt, at level 8 no less. =/
I had a co worker who told me about ED and the GDN happening and IO recipes and things you can sell to make money so you can actually afford DO's and SO's from those early days. So I rejoined right before the crazy AE bro haha as it started.
I used the massive tickets from that to stupidly buy SO's direct from the ticket vendor. I sold any normal drops I got for 1 inf a piece.
I got better once I learned the new system. You know what franken slotting is, the soft cap, things like that. Well I had some 50's and I remember the introduction of the Kheldians (from the comic no less =p) and decided I wanted to try one.
In all that my favorite characters are my TF leveled Traps defender and the warshade I made after that defender hit 50, Astral Shadows. The Warshade is perhaps my best slotted character. I just could never justify the cost of entire sets of well anything.
Astral Shadows is the only character I could justify a build with. I made one. No purples at all because that seemed completely hopeless (before GR patch notes that is). I did it on my own and actually think its a good build. It will probably take me a year to make enough merits to afford the whole thing but it's do able.
Purples seem an absolute lost cause. I also hate fire/kin and shield scrappers so no farming for me.
Kari Windrow was one of the IT party girls from the 1950's. Coming into contact have with the Nictus, Astral Shadows, after a near fatal car accident, Kari and Astral have joined forces to overcome the Nictus attempts at overthrowing the earth.
Here is my girl Astral Shadows. Now at security level 47!
P.S. Sorry for the late post, forums went down last night.

Quote:I always wondered why Defender Nukes never received the same bonus from Vigilance as other powers. Yeah they get the endurance discount but that's a moot point when your drained of all your endurance afterwards.
I wonder how differently defenders would operate if Vigilance reduced the end drain after the nuke is launched. If Vigilance is at 45% then your nuke only reduces your end by 55 (100 - 45) during the crash. You'd still lose recovery but you'd still be operational too.
Brainstorming on the matter, this would reward defenders for using their nukes as 'oh noez' buttons when the team is near death (when vigilance is more effective) and actually give them a reason for taking such a counter productive power.
I play a kin/energy defender so my nuke is always capped damage due to fulcrum shift. I don't want to use it all the time or else im approaching blaster or scrapper spike damage because it's damage is still in the 'over-kill' range. but perhaps if this was implemented, Defender nukes could be reworked damage and recharge wise to tie in with vigilance. Such as a lower damage and lower recharge or possibly just a higher recharge so blasters don't feel like sad pandas?
I didn't put this in the suggestions forum because I honestly don't have opinion either way. It would essentially just be useful only on Teams where Vigilance's end discount is around so Soloing is still painful for certain sets such as Sonic or FF. But it would help push defenders in another direction than corruptors and help them feel different.. we all wanna be special.
I'd like to hear more opinions on this. I like my nuke. But thats probably because I'm always at my damage maximum. I know some don't like their nuke because it's weak(er than blasters) and crashes their endurance. That could kill their team if they are unable to heal or rebubble etc so it's not a good idea to nuke a spawn.
opinions? thoughts? cakes?
Nukes - perks outside of damage
Ice Blast - blaster level damage, Dot doing -20 tohit, -30 recharge, and -50% movment
Archery/AR/DP - no crash and quick recharge (comparatively)
Dark - -62.5 to hit as well as damage. So this soft caps the team basically
Elec - -55 endurance and -100 to recovery on targets.
Psi - Mag 3 15 Second stun and -87% recharge debuff
Rad - Mag 3 15 sec stun and - 50 defense to all
Sonic - Mag 3 15 sec stun and -20 resistance to all.
Energy - mag 20 knock back
My traps/sonic defender would drop the traps and nuke every single time it was up if that was implemented. Just doesn't need a lot of endurance and would net the team -20 resistance to all and a 15 second mag 3 stun every 3 minutes slotted.
Your own Kinetic energy can already Siphon>FS>nuke>blue>transferrance and that's out of the box. A /dark nuke is the biggest to hit buff in the game, rad blast nuke is the biggest def debuff in the game. Energy is kind of lack luster in this respect however. -
Jaunt End/Range is incredibly cheap. Buy the highest level one you can use and add maybe 1 1 slot of end (if your a warshade stick to the jaunt and flip to nova if you get low on endurance =p)

Traps solos very well matched with dark, sonic, and ice blast. FF generator, seeker drones into the mob, poison trap, plant a mine, and blast away. With IO's easy to soft cap so you can focus on recharge. And status protection at 8!
Rad/sonic is a well known solo fiend also.
Storm is another strong soloing primary. Dark is probably very safe.
FF, sonic, and emp are below par on the soloing front, but not at all bad sets (well FF is 1 dimensional). Ice will be difficult to solo until 26 when you get sleet.
On that note any team on your servers TF channels will take nearly any kind of defender, and you can start those at level 10. -
Only in cap. Please turn everything off there. It's bad enough with 30 villains there with auras/armor on. If your in a zone with only a handful of players you should be fine.

Quote:Your embellishing quite a bit. It's happened to me numerous times. Rikti, Council groups chock full of Marksmen, Nemesis, Gunslingers, and those Rad-slinging Neutron bots as blue minions and white Lts have all defeated my FF Defender with PFF on.
"
A FF Defender with PFF, with 1 common def io, and Dispersion bubble with 3 common def ios (yes it still buffs you) leaves you at 110% defense to all and 40 resistance to all. Nothing outside of the gunslinger would have anything outside the 5% floor to hit on you. And if you had you an APP then you had even higher resist. That doesn't even count slotted Maneuvers which a FF defender would probably have also, or combat jumping.
Your also talking about lower level mobs which take a penalty on hitting you already.
A blaster with PFF (1 def io) is running at 65.9% added defense and 28% added resist. Not counting io bonuses, cj, weave, or maneuvers. Heck I think you can blow force of nature right after if you want to be the hardest thing to kill in the game. -
Quote:I concur this does indeed happen. Doesn't really matter once you get eclipse as you can make it passed the "pause", but before that, if you have aggro, you can get mezzed and will remain mezzed, if they get you a second time during the transformation. You will remain human and unable to change for a few seconds. No, it does happen. If you get mezzed while in the middle of the transformation animation, you stop transforming. You can then start the transformation again and succeed, but I can see how someone would die if they really needed to go Dwarf and had to wait twice as long (or more) to do so :P

Quote:Same happened to my pc. My laptop did not patch and connected no problem. Like stated the servers are goiing down though =(The third time worked for me. Ran updater it fixed itself. I verified all files. I was able to log in. I trying to log in again now. Looks promising, it did not patch or verify/fix any files.
And it worked. Looks like all is good. Two different servers and no issues.

I have noticed this in brickstown as well. It's been happening there for at least the last 2 issues.

Quote:My point is that the Updater links to Patch notes not the announcement page of the forums. It be nice to put a place holder there like, Currently fixing an exploit more details on completion. Or something more professional anyway. Also looking at the patch notes, it was fixing exploits most everyone knew about anyway. As Lemur Lad stated, they don't post pre-patch notes if they are correcting an exploit. After all, if they told us what they were fixing several hours before they brought the servers down I would imagine a lot of people would then go use this exploit.
As well as that, if the patch didn't successfully correct the exploit, anyone who frequents the forums would now be aware of it.
Bottom line is, if they don't tell us before they patch it then most likely, in fact I would insist all the time, it is a correction of an exploit.
Fury
Besides that Ocho posted that before I logged in. Why not the patch notes? The forums is nice and all I do hang around, but the game updater links to
http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/patch_notes/
It does not link to
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=216677
Thats the point. These patches the updater is performing are not considered patches and are indefinable from the updater. That just seems sketchy and stealth nerfing unless you know enough to go to the announcement section of the forums.
Not every player reads the forums -
I don't post often, however I frequent the forums alot (understatement).
My biggest pet peave is unanounced patches, and the reason is 2 fold.
1. The updater opened Internet Explporer instead of the default browser. This is not an issue when goiing to the store or other options that take you out of the game to a browser. Only the links on the upater have this "feature". This should be fixed for those of that stopped trusting IE around say 1997.
2. Why is the game patching today. Why isn't it listed in the patch note's web page, linked in the updater? I definitly received a patch today and am currently installing it however the patch notes haven't updated since March 18. Why?
Please excuse any typos as IE8 still doesn't have automatic spell checker and I've become reliant on it over the years. Sad I know.
Thanks for reading -
Recently rolled an AR/DEV and over the last few months I don't really see alll the no Build up and trip mine hate. Get to the Mission and drop 4 or 5 tripmines while people arrive. The goal is to NOT get them blown up.
They provide a defiance bonus of 26.4% per mine dropped. Anyone know if the bonus is additive or multiplicative? Dropping 5 mines and 1 mine between each group gives you about 4 mines going the entire time. The Gun Drone is 39% during its entire life. The 11 seconds listed in the description is incorrect. The bonus last the length of the pets life. Devices "pets" gives you sustained damage increase purely through defiance bonuses over the entire life of the pet.
What the defiance bonus for 5 tripmines that last the entire length of the tripmines? The bonus will go away as soon as a mines blows or self destructs.
Snipe turned from a slightly upgraded slug into a Chuck Norris moment.
Accuracy bonuses from Targeting Drone already.
Also in a group with any controller, bar illusion, and you can FT>FA>Ignite>FT. That should only be useful on those AE boss farms though
Taser seems redundant and I never felt the need for M30.
