They look for, and act on, *exploits.* Things that are so FAR out of range (such as the monkey farms, kill-a-spawn-gain-5-levels or whatever it was) that it *is* too much.
They've tried adding timers. That's hurt regular play. (Just ask my earth/FF trying to find the "last damn warwolf" in Shadowhunter's map.)
They've nerfed XP, repeatedly. (See comment of mine a bit up re: my elec/elec blaster and the portal room.)
They've added ranged attacks to mobs.
If they wanted to shut down *farming* completely, they'd have to remove AE, hazard zone size spawns (street spawns being limited to, at most, a group of 5,) and gut most missions, plus get rid of the difficulty choices we were given, forcing everyone to run at 0/0.
IF they ever decide to do mass bannings and roll backs again it'll be much more surgical. -
The devs put in the patch notes for the release and I believe in the MOD when Issue 14 went live that AE was not for PLing and farming. People had PL and farm missions ready from beta.
The Devs reacted by use of extreme measures...people responded by continuing to disregard them and even going "I don't know how anyone could think this is looked down upon."
Farmers are tolling the dev's and going "U MAD BRO?" -

- Affected people who weren't involved
- Annoyed the playerbase as a whole
- AE generally left to gather dust by the devs outside of actual exploits like the comm officers and monkey farms.
- Interest in AE falters. Including by formerly-enthusiastic authors.
Since then:
- occasional (rare) bug fix.
- Other bugs (such as the filter) left for some time, breaking regular arcs (but not affecting farms.)
- Dev Choice arcs pretty much not updated in... er... how long? until very recently. (Remember those being talked up as "monthly" so slots would be freed up as a reward to authors? yeah....) -

There's... you know, gosh, just something that people don't like about paying for something on a monthly basis and then being told that you're only allowed to play it X each day.

It's like everyone forgot when AE was rolling out the devs said framing AE will be frowned upon and then did mass bannings and roll backs. -

Thats because a lawyer wrote it and a lawyer can't be clear on something like that to save their life. If they can use big words that cover 20,000 things to describe the one expected situation you can bet that the lawyer will go for the biggest amount of coverage that they can.
The important thing to remember about EULA's are.
A) They exist to CYA the company for standard things the company does.
B) They have never actually been found to be enforcable.
D) Having one protects you [thus the CYA aspect] from lawsuits for your standard practices because you posted the standard practice in the EULA.
E) This is why the lawyer writing the bloody thing will try to make is as broad and general as they can. -

Did you know you used to get level 50 TOs and DOs from NPCs?
It was determined they did more harm then good (full inventory=no useful drops) and drop rates were adjusted to remove them from the level ranges where they were obsolete. -
