I can't think of any real way to make it attractive.

I mean it's nice when mobs are on the ground... but its not so nice when they are on the ground but out of range, or on the ground... out of the debuffs, or on the ground... out of the melee's pbaoes.

The devs may well add a new knockback IO set (and thus not limited to only powers that take damage enhancements) with a non unique KB-KD IO (and that's all it would do, no adding a proc to non KB powers, no secondary enhancement like damage or recharge) in the future. Thus giving players control over what powers they have that will KB or KD. Doing it this way also adds a "cost" to the change of the power as well because now you have to spend a slot specifically for that change from KB to KD, whereas just doing it through null the gull would have had no cost at all and been completely global to all your powers whether you wanted it for just one power or not.
  2. My guess is, if there is a nerf at all (and there may well not be to the IO), they would make it so slotting the proc into Bonfire (and probably Tornado too since those two seem to be the only real outliers right now) would reduce the frequency of the knockdown to say Earthquake's level.

Doing that might make it so the mitigation offered by the knockdown is still there, still reliable and still good without it being flop-a-palooza every time you drop it.

Why might there NOT be a nerf to the IO? Cause this proc may well be a test to see how we would break things turning KB to KD. Cause they may plan to give us more ways to turn KB into KD. If they do decide to give us more methods then I could see some POWERS getting adjusted in light of that (such as Bonfire and Tornado's KB frequency)
  3. I'd kill for there to be a non unique version of the proc so my energy/energy blaster could stop knocking things out of her own range...
  4. I've soloed at 54x8 on my Ill/Rad controller and my Inv/SS tanker... though the tanker was slow obviously due to less dps.

From IOs to inheritent Fitness to Incarnate stuff.. including levelshifts to flat boosts to certain set. This game has definitely seen it's fair share of creep.

This game is slowly dying and anyone who disagrees is in denial and the best way to keep it around for even just alittle while longer is to some how halt powercreep. We haven't even gotten to the Omega incarnate and people are already 50+3, able to solo most content with little issue... heck some can even do it at 50, showing such a huge flux in power for certain sets. I understand our development team is only here to milk as much money as they can from us until CoH2 comes out or until upkeep is larger than income but I'd someday like to see old content revisited instead of selling us new crap that just says 'grow moar powerful for only XXX points or moneyz!!!'
While I am under no illusions that COH is a "growing game with decades ahead of it!" I would also like to say... there have been several games that have come and gone (gone as in shutdown) since COH launched. The fact that COH is still going for like what? Eight years? It's been around longer than WoW hasn't it? That fact alone is a testament to the quality of the product. Sure it's dated. All things age. But that doesn't take away from the fact that it's a good game.

I love COH for what it is. My only wish for the future is when the time comes for COH to shutdown (and hopefully that is still many many years away), that NC Soft puts the Paragon Studios team on the job to make a new game based on what City of Heroes was but with all the new options that the latest tech offers and all the experience they had working on COH over the years. Hell if I had the money I'd invest in making such a game, but sadly I am not a wealthy person =\
  6. Sometimes we have to accept an unpleasant action to get good results long term. Like taking yucky tasting medicine to get better. If a forced respec is the proc of adding new slots... especially if this meant the devs had more creative control over things without forcing respecs in the future, I'd say that's worth the price of a forced respec... but thats just my opinion.
  7. Here's why I probably wouldn't transfer:

    1) Guardian has been my home since the game launched and has a decent population.

    2) We still can't transfer SG's and I have far too much invested in mine to start over (I play mostly solo and I've built my own little dream palace over the years).

    3) I'd lose names of characters I love... notably Celeste, my empathy/archery defender.

A better detail than that would be for all cool downs to reset at a specific time so we wouldn't have to keep sticky notes around for the exact time each and every toon did something -_-

I'd much rather all "daily" cool downs reset at midnight PDT and all weekly cool downs reset on Tuesdays at midnight PDT
  9. Would anyone really have a problem with being forced to do a respec if it resulted in more slots?????

Even if I never actually bought that pack, I wouldn't care nearly as much about badge hunting, simply because I'd know, in the back of my mind, that I could just buy it with two simple clicks. The effort, to me, would lose meaning.

I don't care whether other people have "bought" or "earned" their builds. The fact that I have the option to buy it, actively detracts from my desire to build anything in the first place.

I think that's what EG was getting at, too.
Now on the surface one could say this is irrational. But there is a very logical reason NOT to add such a "badge pack". Such an item in the store would actually diminish an in game activity. It would rob the buyer of the incentive and opportunity to engage in the badge hunting activity which has its own rewards like xp/inf, accolades and reward merits.

Acquiring IO's in an of itself is not an activity with associated rewards in the traditional sense. I know, some people can look at it like acquiring is an activity and the set bonuses are the reward but that's a bit abstract and not the "traditional" way such things are viewed IMO. IO's are a reward (often random) for engaging in specific activities or through use of various currencies earned through in game play (merits of varying kinds). The store adds a way for real world currency to be used to acquire these things. In most cases however it's far more cost effective to use in game means to get these things at least as far as I have seen. But for the convenience and the real world cost, I don't mind people buying them since it supports the game. It's like the people buying these things are buying me new content for the game.

The amplifiers are nothing more than hour long multi-aspect inspirations when you really stop to think about it. To me they're something I'd never waste money on... but hey for anyone who buys them regularly... more power to ya and thank you for spending money to develop my game ^_^

I personally believe, however, that it is irrational to stop engaging in an activity you enjoy (playing coh) because the market allows people to use their real world money to purchase in game items. There is no logical reason why you should no longer like playing the game just because you have an OPTION to acquire things in a different way than you typically did... especially when that option potentially pays to keep the game alive and growing. The only conclusion I can come to when someone makes such a declaration is that they compare what they do and have to what others do and have regardless of their claims to the contrary. And somehow when someone else gets something they "worked so hard for!" by simply spending real world money, or even if they just have the opportunity to do so but don't exercise it, it inexplicably invalidates everything they accomplished to get or do whatever it was they got or did. There is no logical explanation why an option merely existing has this profound effect on someone's outlook of the game.

EDIT: (Not in response to Arcanaville, I just didn't want to make a new post)

What I find absolutely fascinating about this discussion is the complete inability of the participants (on both sides, I count myself), to accept what the other says at face value. I am becoming more convinced by the post that this is exactly like politics or religion. We come at the problem from different starting points, different value systems and so when I say something like, "Some items in the marketplace bother ME irrespective of the actions of others", others who disagree can't even comprehend how that can be true. Many responses to the question I posed are along the lines of "we believe you are not lying, but you're still wrong." Which is amazing to me because I honestly can't see how either side could be wrong here. People can like different things. I see this as little different than saying, "I like the color green but not the color orange." I doubt anyone would feel the need to ascribe motive to that statement. It's just a statement of preference.

Likewise, I don't like certain parts of the game being sold away in the marketplace. I am an attorney and have spent many years arguing both sides of an issue. I fully understand how to tease out biases. I do not care what other players do (in this context Arcana...meanie!). I care, because I think selling certain things make the experience of earning them meaningless. I also realize that no matter how many times I state that, some folks will nonetheless believe that I am trying to control what they do. I can't change that. Nor will I argue against it any longer. I see no point. We have different beliefs. That's not going to change.

Just to let folks know, I don't object to the market or even selling many items in it that affect the game. I have very deep reservations about selling the amplifiers, what goes in the super packs and the purple IOs. Other than that, I use the market often and am quite happy about how it's helped fund such quick expansion of content.
I have some questions for you:

Why do you have reservations about anything being in the store?

How does anything being in the store impact your gameplay?

Your "feelings" are just as valid as anyone elses. With that said, feelings have to be tempered with logic. You don't have to like everything that goes in to the store. But is it logical to deny adding it when it can generate income that will keep the game going?

No one is ever forced to buy any specific thing in the store. If someones values/beliefs tells them "these things are bad for the game" that's fine. They don't have to partake of them. But denying others the opportunity to buy specific things (by lobbying to have stuff kept out of the store or removed from the store) simply because they don't like it, or they think it somehow hurts the game based on their beliefs and values that others may not share, doesn't seem very fair in my opinion.

Everyone should have the opportunity to speak to the devs with their dollars. Some things will sell very well and those dollars tell the devs what many people want. When things don't sell well the devs know what is less appealing to the player base on average. Preventing things from ever being added or removing things from the store only stifles our voices. Now that doesn't mean I advocate putting any and everything in the store. Some things would just either not make sense or fundamentally side-step the game as a whole (like say being able to buy a lvl 50). There's logical reasons to not add some things. When it comes to decision making it's not usually wise to just let feelings (as irrational as they can be) be the guiding factor in determining our conclusions. Tempering those feelings with logic helps to create a balanced outcome.
  13. I was curious if any Blasters have used the new KB>KD IO in APP Bonfire and dropped a Burn patch on top of it. Is it as amazing as I think it is?

Do you believe that I am not telling the truth (either willfully or not) when I say that I don't care about what other people do and that some real money items affect how I feel about the game independent of other players' actions?
Honestly? No I don't believe you. Why? Because what you're saying is contradictory. You have no logical reason for disliking anything being for sale in the market that doesn't have something to do with another player.

Any item being for sale does NOT affect you in any way beyond it being an option to purchase. In fact items NOT FOR SALE are more likely to diminish the game experience for someone than anything that IS FOR SALE.

If something being in the market bothers you... ask yourself why... really ask. If it does bother you and it ultimately comes down to "I did this to get this. If I can just buy it then it cheapens the experience for me" then ask yourself how exactly this purchasable option cheapens anything you do. You don't HAVE to buy it.

I honestly believe anyone who tries to use that BS excuse against the market is really saying "It cheapens the experience for me knowing that while I may avoid buying this item from the market and earn it in game which is the right way to play... somewhere someone else will buy it which is the wrong way to play and that this somehow in some way diminishes any effort I have made to get it without buying from the market"

How you "feel" about something in game or what your idea of what is the "right way to play" should not impact how another player plays the game.

It's sorta like equality for minorities. Just because someone or a group of someones don't like a specific minority for whatever reason, be it religious, ethnic, orientation, etc, doesn't mean that minorities should be denied equal rights under the law.

Are you pretty much looking at a chain of Mind Probe, Subdue, and Mental Blast then?
I prefer to stay at range on my mind/psi dom. So my attack chain is Dominate, Levitate and Subdue. Though that may change if the snipe changes go through as expected.

It's NOT what most would consider optimal for high dps. But here's my reasoning:

    1) Levitate gives me a source of non-psi damage so when I have to deal with robots and what not, I am not totally screwed by their high resistance to my damage.

    2) Dominate is something I have to use, and something I want to use alot to keep things locked down... and it also takes the dom ATO set letting me cycle it for the stacking proc over and over.

    3) Subdue is a nice damage attack and it can also take the dom ATO set for cycling of the stacking bonus, though exemping below 23 means losing the stacking proc if I slot it there.

If the snipe changes happen... I may move the proc to Subdue and slot Dominate as a pure control power having Levitate, Subdue, and Psionic Lance as my attack chain. Exemping wont be as optimal as I'd like but at end game I'd have a pretty decent attack chain (though still not optimal I think according to most). If you don't mind being in melee range then Mind Probe, Subdue, Psionic lance (if the snipe changes go as anticipated) would probably be a pretty nice dps attack chain. But for live right now Subdue, Mind Probe, and Telekinetic Thrust are your probably the highest dps attacks you can pick. As far as Levitate goes, it's damage is not much less than Subdue and if slotted right can be pretty close. On my dom's build my Levitate does only 2 less damage than Subdue (237 vs 239) making is a respectable alternative to Mental Blast and giving me more varied damage types.

Mental Blast does the same damage as Subdue without any secondary mez attached so you'd be better off with Subdue and other higher damaging attacks if optimal dps is your concern, simply due to the ATO and immobilize proc opportunities it offers. As a quick note, neither Mind Probe nor Telekinetic Thrust can take the dom ATO set so Subdue is kind of important if you want to stack that buff as part of your standard attack chain.

Maybe I am not being clear...

    You'd be getting

10% from Apocalypse in Dark Blast

    PLUS

10% from Superior Defender in Life Drain

    PLUS

    7.5% from Sting in Moonbeam

And of course whatever else you have for recharge... Basically what I am saying is that nothing else you can put in a single target attack will get you 7.5% recharge. At best you can hope for 6.25% Putting sting in moonbeam will get you more recharge overall because apoc and ATO set will be in other powers. Of course if you don't need the recharge obviously it's not important.
  19. Excerpt From The Internal Journal of Jacqui Pacheco:

I knew the instant I picked up that shard I found, after Mender Ramiel left, that things had changed. It was just a stray thought at first... what if I could reroute the energy flow through the... well I probably shouldn't record the specifics. That was the biggest problem I had becoming an incarnate.

Unlike heroes with inborn mutations or gifted with fantastic abilities through science gone horribly wrong (or right in some cases), I don't have any super powers on my own... unless you count my brain. Mom always said I inherited my brains from dad. And then of course there's the technology. My grandfather created the basis for tech that has pioneered advances in the audio/visual industry, and when I took over after mom and dad retired I wanted to do so much more. Just touching that shard has taken me so far beyond what I had anticipated.

You have to understand, when I developed my hard-light/laser motion tracking system from the original Synergy tech my grandfather built, I intended to use it to make the world a better place. In this world of alien invasions, super powered criminals and disreputable corporations, I wanted to make a difference. But now the very things I know could put the entire world in danger if I were to ever share that knowledge or have it taken from me.

My primary tool has always been my belt, the primary power source for my holographic projection system I use when fighting crime. The tech has its fail safes and by itself while dangerous in the wrong hands isn't really world ending. But what that shard showed me I could do with it... no it would be too much. No matter how careful I was... one missed record... one lost blueprint... it could unleash incarnate level technology upon the world that could be used to devastating effect. But how could I not use it? I could do so much good with it.

And then it came to me. The answer to my predicament. How to create incarnate level technology that could not be stolen or duplicated or reverse engineered. I had one of my trusted allies in crime fighting, Dr. Steven Sheridan, surgically implant a neural interface my company had developed a few years ago (with some upgrades of course) into my brain. On it's own it's harmless... it simply lets me control my belt's tech through neural impulses. It's what's in my head that makes it all come together though. I should probably take a look at mom's old remote micro projectors and see about doing away with the belt altogether...

The only way for me to use this incarnate level tech without risk of it being stolen is to make sure it doesn't exist when I am not using it... that no blueprint or record is ever set as to its design. Through the neural interface I actually create the tech through hard-light holograms... basically force fields and photons. The shard showed me how to make it possible... honestly I am surprised I didn't think of it on my own. But from what little I've learned about the Well of Furies from those "in the know", it doesn't actually give you anything you don't already possess except maybe ACCESS to things already within you that you just didn't quite know how to tap into. Or maybe it removes roadblocks keeping you from exceeding certain thresholds. I am not entirely sure to be honest. I'm pretty sure the Well prefers it that way too.

This is the best way... the safest way to use this technology to better mankind and keep it safe from those who would abuse it. Sure it's a lot of effort to mentally construct the tech every time I need to use it, but I can't think of any better security measures than my own brain. I've even managed to create permanent mental defenses subconsciously so not even a master telepath or fancy mind probing devices can access my knowledge of incarnate tech. And just in case anyone gets close... I added a kill switch.

It scares me to think about it being there in the back of my mind. But I can't have any priority higher than keeping that knowledge out of the wrong hands... even if it means losing my life. I wish I could write in a regular pencil and paper journal like normal people, but I guess I don't really qualify as normal anymore. Maybe one day it will be safe to download these entries somewhere other than my brain. Until then...

((This little excerpt came out of my trying to figure out just how a tech based hero in general, and mine in particular, could be an incarnate without any old villain just nabbing the tech or stealing the specs to make their own. Since my character is a technology origin ill/rad/primal controller, I thought of how Star Trek's Holodecks can create working machinery through photons and force fields and figured why couldn't my character do that? So basically her "suit" isn't really real. She uses her belt's power supply to get the ball rolling but that "incarnate tech" stays in her head when not in use.))
  20. I'd love to see the buyable temporary jet pack (the little 30 day one) available as a backpack detail. I love the look and animations to it. While you're at it why not add in the craftable jetpack (the one that looks like what sky raiders use and is the same as the temp one you get from the first safeguard mission) as a back detail as well?

Both have their art and animations already done. They're probably the cheapest/easiest costume bits you could ever add to the game and they would probably sell like hotcakes.
  21. You know they COULD change Build Up into a new power... say... Fiery Build Up?

Basically it's Fiery Embrace with Build Up's to hit buff.

Changes like that are not without precedence and it's still basically build up so the cottage rule isn't broken.

Dark Blast will be your lowest but not much lower than Life Drain.

Life Drain will not only heal you but aoe heal those around you due to the ATO proc which may lessen your need to hit Twilight Grasp (so you can keep pew pewing!)

Moonbeam with Sting of the Manticore gets you a hard hitting attack that also provides a global 7.5% recharge.

In this way you spread the love between the three attacks and have a very solid attack chain that provides some significant secondary benefits as well (aoe heal on top of the self heal in life drain, global recharge from moonbeam/lifedrain/dark blast)

You don't need to know anybody or have any special networking (I'm pretty much a loner in CoH, never really joining supergroups and soforth), just head to your server's meeting place (Pocket D on Freedom) and send a tell to whoever is recruiting. I've managed to fully incarnate 3 toons that way, with multiple T4's on each, and it's been outrageously easy. Granted, I've been playing MMOs for over a decade and trials in CoH are a cakewalk compared to raiding in games like Everquest, but I really think you're making things far too hard on yourself by avoiding the trials. Even if you hate them, they're so short and so much faster that it's probably worth the effort.
I solo not because I can't FIND incarnate trials... but because I DESPISE incarnate trials. The solo path allows me to advance my incarnate abilities without engaging in game play I deplore. You should really look at the price of those pvp procs. Like Hyperstrike said they've dropped a TON since converters came around. If you can afford purples then you can afford pvp procs IMO. Though I will say look for them at lvl 50 and not lvl 10... lvl 10 you're still talkin 1billion (still half of what they were though!). At 50 I think they run around 200-300 mil? Not much different than a apocalypse. And again like Hyperstrike suggested, try to put in some lower bids on non procs/non popular pvp sets and hope for a bite and then use converters to get the procs thats what I did

You said you had 600 mil on hand right? There's you're pvp procs with 200mil left over. If you still need more expensive IO's use hero merits! They are easy to get and you can use alts to get em for your character!
