Yay, thanks, now I know how to feel all special <3
-
B is so classic! But I do really like D too. C has a certain cute charm but I think it'd be too subtle.
-
Ooo hard choice between A and B. I went with B, it wasn't just the glow. Ok I kinda like the glow. I didn't really like C though. Its too roboty-armory.
-
I really like B. And kinda C. A looks a bit too much like what we already have.
-
I have to agree with a lot of Maestintaolius' and others' sentiments
I'm enjoying Ice/Time and finally enjoying Ice more than I have in the past, but I'm only just getting to the 20s so I can't really add anything. Also no idea on Ice/Poison. Your reasons are compelling, someone out there has to have tried it!!
-
Usually if you're doing well as a controller, your team doesn't need much in the way of heals.
I wouldn't recommend Fire, since it seems like your team has damage covered, and I think its lacking for a long time in control.
Earth is great- its not much damage, but you can keep control of the situation well, preventing much enemy attack.
Plant is another fun set that has a good amount of control, though not quite as much as Earth. Its more quirky and may be more fun for you. I like both Earth and Plant for different reasons.
Time is a fun "little bit of everything" type of set. It would probably be a good fit. It has some healing, buffs, and debuffs.
Storm is probably a bit chaotic, it tends to annoy melee players, since knockback can often just make them chase what they're fighting.
I enjoy Time immensely but I havn't had a lot of hands-on experience with Storm. -
I'm usually playing with a friend who is doing Fire/Time Corr so that's pretty fun. Sometimes other friends join us.
I was thinking of slotting more endreduct in some other powers to taste once I get to SOs, I'm not sure how its going to work out yet. Its at least somewhat manageable since Ice had a lot of drop and forget powers but I'm still finding end going pretty quick with 3 DOs in Stamina if I don't pace myself.
That's good to hear Distortion Field stacks with itself, so its worth putting the recharges in. Does the hold pulse more than once like Volcanic Gasses? Its kind of hard to tell when they're held since it seems like they get the swirl just for being slowed I think. Why is the hold not worth slotting for? Its just so short?
The Lockdown +2 mag hold proc always seems awesome, though that's one of the harder ones to get or I'd use it more often. I think I have it in Choking Cloud on one of my other trollers that I spent a lot of time and money IOing out.
I do commonly try to pick up the Slow procs as well as Dark Watcher where I canI'll have to remember to pick up Basilisk's Gaze too. I used to pick up the Turtle -Recharge proc but you're right, maybe it doesn't matter that much. I did add the Malaise Illusions damage proc in Arctic Air already since I happened to get a low level one.
I alt a good amount, so I've gotten to the point I don't really have the patience to outfit more than my select favorite characters in all the best IO sets for them ^_^; I figure the game is quite playable without doing that, and my favorite characters will just shine. Inventions add so much more to think about and manage! I at least try to do some Chance-tos though since those add additional function to certain powers. -
Apologies if this has been covered and I just didn't see the thread, I did try a search, so pointing to a relevant thread is also appreciated
I'm pretty much looking for general slotting advice, not sets or high level stuff other than figuring out Chance-tos.
I made an Ice/Time and am liking it a good deal- the two auras together, though expensive, are pretty awesome and I felt pretty powerful just standing there doing soft mitigation at low levels (I'm not sure how this will continue to be late game.) It feels like the Arctic Air confuse is coming up more often than I recall back in the day (I'd rolled a couple Ice trollers but never really liked them enough to keep them. Time is pretty much my happy place though- I almost feel like they took all the little things I like from other sets and put it in one set just for me. I've been getting more into the power of debuff, but I do like a little healing and buffing too. I chose Ice because I'd been meaning to take that one seriously and I didn't want to repeat any other trollers I like and already have, and it did seem to synnergize.)
I'm only just getting into my 20s and starting to try to figure out how to focus and dish out my slots.
Slow seems to be a strength of the sets but something I should be reaching the cap of pretty easily- do I even need to slot for slow at all, or just throw one in Shiver or something?
Distortion Field is my big question for the set- it comes back pretty fast on its own so doesn't need heavy recharge, but I'm not really clear how it behaves or what else I should slot it for. How does the hold work?
Time's Juncture and Arctic Air both take a variety of Chance-to IOs which seems great. Since I'm Ice I figure slotting for slow isn't a priority for me, but which Chance-to are most worth it? I figure I'll throw in a couple damage and the -recharge to keep stacking in that direction? What else should I slot them for (besides end reduct of course)? I threw a tohit debuff in Juncture and confuse in Arctic Air so far.
The other powers seem fairly straightforward to slot, but feel free to point out anything I should be thinking about that may not be immediately obvious. Part of the key of the set seems to be whoever has Time Crawl on them will be hit harder by most of the rest of your debuffs.
Thanks! -
I totally consider Antidote skippable and don't expect Poison characters I play with to have it. Its pretty active, generally you're pretty busy doing other things that I think are more important than protecting some of the team from mezzes. I never gave it a second thought on my mastermind. Trollers also tend to be pretty active.

I'm rather surprised City isn't looking into this more seriously, but I guess NCSoft generally only offers time cards for their games. Even Facebook games have point cards everywhere. I have a friend with a birthday coming up, and I'd really like to get her Street Justice since it'd be perfect for her and she wouldn't buy it on her own. But I have no way to do that short of saying "log into your account and then go look away while I use my credit card on your account for... something." At least some electronic method of gifting, like you can with WoW? Buy them points or a shop item, they get an email with a code.
I would also totally gift points to my other friends who also play. I'd love to get them too, I'm probably going to be asking for a 3DS eShop points card for Xmas. I know City isn't as big as some of those things but it is the way to go now. Like I said, I'm cool with something purely digital if nothing else. -
Sorry I've been busy with stuff so hadn't gotten to messing with it again.
I removed the tablet driver, restarted, and tried again. It ran for a little while- we did a quick low level mission and were starting a second- when it blue screened for like 2 sec and then restarted itself, much like the first time it did it. I assume the message was the same, I didn't even get to glance at it.
So, still no diceGuess I'm going to submit a help form and hope they can figure out something. My computer is just fine still except for City.

Quote:I do have a Wacom Graphire 3(?) tablet, its not currently plugged into that computer since I've been using it on my laptop more but it probably autoruns on startup (I just have a crappy mouse plugged in). I do hope its not that, since it is important to me :< I can't really do art without it. I've had it a long time, so it seems weird that it would suddenly be causing a conflict, but I'll try that. It may be out of date anyway.Nice catch Texas. The problem with the tablets was that they prevented CoH from loading at all. It acted exactly like the windowblinds issue. And the only way to resolve it was to uninstall the tablet software entirely. Not just stop it from running but uninstall it so it was probably a driver conflict. Obviously the tablet software isn't stopping CoH from running any more but there is a chance it still causes problems.
Kitsune, my suggestion is uninstalling the tablet and seeing what that does. If it fixes the problem then you have to decide if you need the tablet or not. And if you do then I guess we just have to keep trying for a workaround. -
Followed instructions there, the first time I checked any drivers that weren't by Microsoft- no problems after restart. The second time I told it to "automatically select all drivers installed on this computer" and had no problems after restart :/ I kinda wish something had happened.
Windows has given me the "this computer has recovered from a serious error" message and then directed me here: http://wer.microsoft.com/responses/R...c-0b4e3ddbd770
(I think the only thing I'm running off USB right now is my keyboard, which I've had forever. I had already tried taking out my headphones/mic. So this message seems strange?)
Troubleshoot a problem with a USB driver
You received this message because your universal serial bus (USB) driver has caused a stop error, also called a blue screen error. This type of error means the computer has shut down abruptly to protect itself from potential data corruption or loss.
What is a driver?
A driver is software that allows your computer to communicate with hardware or devices. Without drivers, the hardware you connect to your computer (for example, a video card or a webcam) will not work properly.
The following recommended steps might help you eliminate this problem, or at least reduce its frequency. Try them in the order given. If one step does not solve or reduce the problem, then move on to the next one.
Steps to solve this problem
Adjust your computer's power settings
The following power setting adjustments might help reduce the frequency of this problem.
Disable the USB selective suspend setting:
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click System.
Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers node, and then, for each USB Root Hub node, do the following:
Right-click USB Root Hub, and then select Properties.
Click the Power Management tab, uncheck the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power checkbox, and then click OK.
Turn off power saving mode (non-laptop computers only):
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Power Options.
Click the Power schemes dropdown list, select Minimal Power Management, and then click OK.
Check for a system BIOS update for your computer
Several computer manufacturers whose computers exhibit this problem have released BIOS updates to fix this known issue. Contact your computer manufacturer to see if a BIOS update is available for your specific model of computer.
What is the BIOS?
The basic input/output system (BIOS) is software built into a computer that is run when the computer is first turned on. Among other things, this software starts the operating system and supports the transfer of information between hardware devices (such as the keyboard and the monitor).
How do I find my computer manufacturer?
Click Start, click Run, type msinfo32, and then click OK. Your computer manufacturer is listed as the System Manufacturer in the right pane of the System Information window.
Click to go online to see contact information for most computer manufacturers
Download and install the latest updates and drivers for your computer
It is a good idea to periodically check for driver updates for your computer, especially if you have added new hardware recently, like a USB hub or other USB device.
What is a USB hub?
A USB hub is a device featuring multiple universal serial bus (USB) ports. USB ports are narrow, rectangular connection points for connecting USB devices to your computer. A USB hub serves as a port extender or replicator, providing multiple USB ports to operate from one built-in USB connection on your computer. USB hubs can be external devices that plug into a single USB port, or they can be internal devices built into your computer.
To check for driver updates:
Use Windows Update to check for and install updates:
Click to go to the Windows Update website
Note
If Microsoft Update is installed you'll be taken to the Microsoft Update website.
Click Custom to check for available updates.
In the left pane, under Select by Type, click each of the following links to view all available updates:
High Priority
Software, Optional
Hardware, Optional
Note
We recommend you install all High-Priority updates. These updates improve your computer's security and stability.
Select updates for your device and any other updates you want to install, click Review and install updates, and then click Install Updates.
If you recently added a new hardware device to your computer, go online to the manufacturer's website to see if a driver update is available.
If you recently added a new program to your computer, go online to the manufacturer's website to see if an update is available.
Steps to work around this problem
Warning
These steps are designed to address a particular problem but might do so by temporarily disabling or removing some functionality on your computer.
Try removing newly added USB devices
If this problem occurred after adding a USB hub or other USB device, consider removing it to see if the problem goes away. If this solves the problem, contact the device's manufacturer for product updates or other recommendations.
Do not disconnect USB devices while the computer is shutting down or going to sleep
This problem is known to occur when USB devices are disconnected while the computer is in the process of shutting down or going into sleep mode. This is common with laptops, especially those with docking stations, because the docking station can act like a USB hub. The frequency of this problem might be reduced by allowing your computer to fully shut down or fully enter sleep mode before removing it from its docking station or disconnecting USB devices from it or from the docking station.
If you know which USB device is causing this problem
It might be possible to prevent the blue screen error by choosing the Safely Remove Hardware option in your System Tray before putting your computer in sleep mode or hibernation.
In the System Tray, click the Safely Remove Hardware icon, select the USB device that you think is causing the problem, and then click OK.
Do not physically remove the USB device.
Perform the action that resulted in the blue screen error, whether that was resuming operation of your computer after putting it in sleep mode, hibernation, or, in the case of laptops, closing the laptop or placing it in a docking station.
If the blue screen error still occurs, then it is likely the problem is with another USB device. Try this procedure using other USB devices until you find the one causing the problem.
If the blue screen error went away, then you have most likely identified the device causing the problem. Contact the device manufacturer for more information on how to solve this problem, or use the Safely Remove Hardware option to work around it.
Note
Depending on the device manufacturer and model, some USB devices will become available automatically when you resume use of your computer. Others will require that you first physically unplug them and then plug them back in before they will be recognized by the computer. Check the System Tray to see if the USB device you safely removed became available when you started using your computer again. If it did not become available automatically, then physically unplug it, and then plug it back in. -
New info for you lovely people:
I think I was running an updater when I did that earlier capture since I was thinking maybe I should run that or antispy just in case.
I tried running LOTRO last night and encountered no problems.
Today I ran the file verification on the NCSoft patcher.
I also updated my video driver.
(Restarted after this.)
Still having the same problem. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing on City, it BSODs after what feels like about the same amount of time passed.
BSOD basic info (I wish I could just screencap these):
A wait operation, attach process, or yield was attempted from a DCP routine.
Check that new hardware or software is properly installed.
Disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOs memory options such as cacheing or shadowing. (Tells me to do in safe mode if needed.)
STOP: 0x000000B8 (0x00000000 0x00000000 0x00000000 0x00000000)
The first time this occurred I didn't even get a BSOD, it just restarted itself, so I thought maybe it was a fluke. The second time I think I got a different error message, but that only lasted a couple seconds before the computer rebooted so I didn't really see it. Now its consistently giving me that error message, and it doesn't reboot until I do so. -

I've been playing City pretty regularly lately, and typically have Skype running to voice chat with friends. I don't usually have anything else running unless maybe a browser window if I'm looking something up.
Ever since the last patch, I've started getting BSOD from City (I have to conclude its City, since my computer doesn't do it on its own.) It started yesterday (or the day before, I forget what day it was) when I played after updating with the patch. The day before it had played perfectly fine. Its odd because I can play for a little while, like maybe 10min, before it occurs. I get a BSOD and I don't really understand the error message. The first time, my computer just restarted itself. It consistently happens after I've been on City for a little while- I am able to load in and get a character going. The only change anytime recently on my computer has been the patch. I havn't even changed any graphics settings or anything. It just seems odd since I thought that wasn't a very big patch.
Of course it could be odd coincidence and its something else, as computer stuff can be this way, but I'm not really sure how to go about figuring out the specific problem.
I only have a basic computer technical knowledge, though I can follow directions.

Awesome stuff coming, I've very excited about the EATs! Personally I thought both those types are cool though I would have liked something unique.
If there are Illusion Doms... I will be very happy. I'm still happy to have Plant coming to Hero side! And if there's Storm Corruptors... more yay!
The Roman thing seems a bit odd, but hey I'm happy to have new maps and I know you guys generally do a good job of things. I just hope its possible to do those lower level bits later, as I generally push to get past 20 as fast as I can to get to things like Stamina and IOs. I consider things starting to really get fun for my characters post-20.
All that other stuff is more fun icing on a delicious cake
Please please give more character slots ;_; I don't want to have to switch servers but my main server is already full of characters I love, but I know when this hits I'll want to make at least a couple more characters. We need more space to play the fun things you give us! -

I'm not sure who said this first, but it applies to me:
Step One: Admit that you are an altoholic.
Step Two: There is no step two, as I dont intend to fix this problem.

Not that alting is bad. Heck there are too many players that only play *one* character, and don't know jack about how anyone else plays. They usually do average on a team since they have their playstyle and it doesn't change, although they may be very good at that style, they have little idea of some of the things their teammates are doing since they don't have experience with other types/sets.
I think this is more for people who would like to get that one character up to 40-50 and are just having trouble finding 'the one' to do it with. Nobody can really guide you to your character calling or tell you who you'll enjoy playing most but you. -
I have been infected with altaholism. A friend who has been playing well over a year got me into the game. I've only played a fraction of the time he has, and yet I've gotten a fair number of characters over his highest since I'm a bit better at focusing. When I first started I planned on only making a couple characters, as most games have such rigidly defined classes that only a couple will appeal anyway, and there's no point in making more than one of each class since there's little variety within, or several choices are considered inferior to others and nobody plays them. I knew I liked healer and archer types, the end. But when I read forums, and we talk about different character types, it makes me want to try out more. I began to realize how differently the same powersets played when in different archtypes once I'd been playing a couple months. I began to get the tingle of 'wow that looks neat, I wonder what that's like to play?' And that is what makes CoX great.
Our plan, since we'd like to unlock a Kheldian and our highest heroes are up to 30 now that we've started following that plan, is out of our alts for each of Heroes and Villians to choose one main and one secondary for each, since only playing one character can really burn you out on them and that's not the idea when you're playing a game for fun! We focus on one server (which I have full). When I get the impulse to make a new character, I make it on a side server and am usually able to just map out how I would build it and leave it at lvl 3 once I've gotten the idea out of my head, and then I can go back to my mains with no distraction.
Over time I've deleted some alts, that just didn't make the grade in fun and fashion. I have some characters I don't really like to play but I just can't let go, because I love their name/looks/story and want to remake them as something I like better. I'm trying to keep my main server very tight with only characters I plan on pursuing. If its just a whim or something I don't like as well, it gets tossed on a side server with the dustbunnies, so I don't keep looking at it and it doesn't tempt me.
My highest is a lvl 40 MM which I'm pretty proud of (though I think leveling in Villains is easier than heroes.) I used to think getting to 50 was a big deal, but in a way I don't want to get there because then a character I leveled because I simply enjoyed would be 'over', since I'm not into the PvP scene. She's currently dormant in favor of giving my secondary Villain some love, but she is definately not forgotten and I'm generally more than happy to pull her out for powerleveling friends' characters.
It really does take a bit in the game to find the AT and powers you love most since it brings more to the table than just warrior/healer/archer/thief- it lets you be a little bit of everything if you want. Once you get some experimentation down, you usually know your couple favorite ATs, so its a matter of picking your top 2 favorites and picking the powersets for those that excite you most, which again may take some experiementing. Reading guides only tells you so much, everything has a different feel in play. Sometimes going AGAINST the grain with a character ends up being really fun.
So, in summary, to kick altism you just need to be able to make 2-3 characters you're most excited about and than you keep coming back to because you love them. You'll still have alt tendencies, but if you simply have to make a new character, do it on a side server and then don't look at them anymore! Usually if you have a good SG/VG who greets you and teams with you often you'll find yourself going to that character that much more as well. (Sometimes its so depressing to leave a character dormant, and when you come back most of the people you teamed with are gone or 15+ levels over you. Don't let that happen to your main!) If you really have it bad, maybe try to concentrate ONLY on Heroes OR Villains to limit your choices. -
I like Ice with Kinetics, I have both a Controller and Corruptor that are that combo, though they both play differently. The graphics of /Kin make me think of auroras up in the arctic regions so they go thematically, as well as the amusing opposite of adding speed and slowing. Ice tends to have more holds than some other stuff, so I'll quite commonly slap my target with a hold or immob before firing off Transfusion, to make sure it stays in position and doesn't get knocked around or even decide to run away for no apparent reason. Its so frusterating to hit something with Transfusion and see it go flying across the room just before it goes off >.< Though the people who use knockback for defense hate it when you immob things. Ice Slick is another good one for keeping things in place for targeting.
I'd really like to see Repel work just because it seems like a lot of fun and a possible butt-saver, though at the same time it does seem to oppose several of Kinetic's fundimental powers. It doesn't fit with my Controller at all since she's very melee and likes to sit in the middle with Arctic Air on, but I may try to squeeze it in with my Corruptor. With the real need for Stamina at earlier levels and so many good abilities to start with its hard to have much room.
I can't speak for any of the other ones, Ice is the only one I've really tried with /Kin. -
I'm actually finding that later game, now that all my zombies heal themselves, I'm not using Soul Extraction as much as I used to. You pretty much have to *make* a zombie sacrifice himself if you really want it. I do still think its useful to have an extra (undead)man on the team for bosses, particularly for hold stacking. He's pretty weak when you are in a hard enough fight to be losing a lot of zombies though, and goes down quick with direct aggro since he prefers to be way far away shooting.
-
Zombies knockback too so it can be a bit of a problem, though with the tentacles and holds they stay in place part of the time. After using NG a bit more, I'm amused by it and I think I'll keep it, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for it to be dramatically useful. Like Faydon said, its mostly good for bosses, and maybe the occasional large mob, but not much else. If you're considering getting something else, get it instead.
I personally don't like to send in my pet alone first thing since they're likely to draw too much aggro. For bosses I'll do my Weaken/Hold combo and get my pets on them first, then cast NG on whichever of my Grave Knights is in better position. For a mob I cast it on a Grave Knight and send them all in the middle, and if that Knight is being stubborn I make them GoTo. I hate using GoTo since it seems like things that have a targeting circle don't click very well half the time. -
I was also going to add, despite my complaints about Noxious Gas, I still like the Poison set a lot. It may not have the AoEs of Dark, but I can easily take down weakened bosses. My hold stacks with my Lich's powers so I often have them held most of the battle as well. I think the Ghost has a hold in addition so its possible for him and the Lich to do it alone though I havn't seen it happen.

I think those are good playing suggestions in general ^_^. Don't pick abilities because other people tell you they're good and you're trying to follow someone else's build. Pick them because they're fun. I got converted to Doms once I started to get one to about lvl 10. It was the most fun character I have. Everyone had been saying what lousy damage they do and such so I'd taken a while to try one out, but I think a Dom is an essential part of any team even more than a Corr is. Its so fun to be in control, and busy always checking your targets, seeing which hold is about to go away and who needs to be locked down. At first I was frusterated, but once I got over the often quick death when you lose control it was great. It can be a little difficult getting through your early levels with limited choices, but you also learn to appreciate each power and learn how to utelize them best. Playing a Dom is not like any other character. I'm usually a Defender type and I think that carries over to a Dom since I'm always keeping track of what's going on around me, though Doms focus more on mobs than team members you still need an awareness of what your team is doing moreso than say, a Brute. I like to play on teams since I find holding larger mobs much more satisfying. WHACK! Guess what you're all confused! Mwahaha I shall keep them occupied while everyone painlessly takes them out. Doms turn bosses into servant kittens.
