  2. I'd suggest local for that situation... Using 'say' would suck if you're on Super Group, Coalition, or some random global channel... 'suck' for you, not the people that then get to make fun of you, that is.

He's being fairly idiotic. If you seemed hostile with the first response, why is he still trying to talk you into it with the reply to it? If someone says 'no thanks' and you continue badgering them to join, I think that's a reasonable time to whip out the '**** off'.

It's not (entirely) an issue with the market server, but with the shard you're playing on, which is why all the complaints (over many, many threads) have only said they're from Virtue (anyone not on Virtue with issues should really speak up and say so). Virtue being the common element in all the complaints means that Virtue is either the cause, or trigger, of the issue.

And I, personally, infinitely prefer the new UI. It's faster, more responsive, takes less clicks, and more helpful than the old one.
  5. That looks like the full list of ports. I think it's safe to say it's an issue with the router, so if you can get a replacement (if it's provided by your ISP, you should be able to get it replaced by free... maybe) that'd likely fix it completely.

Even if not, you should be okay running just a DMZ, I'd just recommend having some sort of firewall on your system and you should be fine.
  6. I believe (most) any EB/AV without the Pointy Triangles of Doom can be knocked back/down.
  7. At what point are you having trouble connecting? Is it in the Updater? The login screen? The server selection screen? Or the character selection screen?

There's been a number of threads about having trouble connecting with the Updater recently, so it might be a problem with an up-stream ISP between NC and some of the playerbase.

    connecting.. #8

Just a quick work-around whenever you're having problems with the updater and there is not a new update out. These commands will manually start the game skipping the updater. If there's a new patch that you haven't installed, you will be unable to login. Don't get into a habit of using these commands instead of the Updater.

On Windows 32bit, press Win+R on your keyboard, and type the following into the Run dialog:
    C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\cityofheroes.exe -project coh

On Windows 64bit, press Win+R on your keyboard, and type the following into the Run dialog:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\cityofheroes.exe -project coh

You could also make a new shortcut, and point it to:
    32bit: "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\cityofheroes.exe" -project coh
    64bit: "C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\cityofheroes.exe" -project coh

Make sure you use the correct version, and adjust the path if you installed CoX into a non-default location.

    ---

On OS X (from the Terminal, or a shortcut-thingy-linker-thing-a-ma-bobber):
    /Applications/City\ of\ Heroes.app/Contents/MacOS/cider --use-dos-cwd c:/coh -- c:/coh/cityofheroes.exe -project coh
  9. I'd recommend to switching to Port Forwarding instead of just a DMZ when you have some spare time, as DMZ exposes all incoming connection attempts to your computer, instead of just selectively (or, at the very least, make sure you have a decent software firewall running to improve your safety).

Glad to hear you were able to solve it, I thought it might be the router but didn't think at all to try that!

    Holster Belt?

The only way to get holsters is to use the Official belt. There might be a few others that could pass as holsters, if you're squiting and not paying close attention (such as the Vanguard belt), but no other real ones.

Sort of like the Shinigami (Gods of Death) in Death Note. They weren't really evil (okay, Ryuk was at least a bit masochistic...), mostly just bored because their realm was... well, incredibly boring. Pretty much all of the Shinigami were fairly willing to help whoever possessed their notebook (with Ryuk being the biggest *** hole about it), not really incredibly concerned about Good vs Evil, with Rem and Gelus both being shown as fairly protective (if not loving) of Misa.

The Shinigami could easily be called Demons based on their appearance (they better fit the old definition of daemon, neither good nor evil), and that's just a very simple example.

    ---

A completely made up example would be that your character made a pact with a powerful Demon Lord. You've sold the Lord your soul, in exchange for control of a powerful force of Demons to do your bidding. Your intentions, at first, might have been evil and selfish (which would explain why the Demon was willing to go along with it), but you had some sort of experience with, say, a Divinely Powered Hero, that began turning you from a path of darkness, to redemption and eventually becoming a Paragon of Redemption (ooo, that'd be a good badge title!).

It's easy to come up with RP reasons for any powerset in the game to be on any alignment. If you can't come up with an explanation, that just means you're not trying hard enough.
  12. If they add a new patron, Dr. Aeon would definitely be the go-to guy to add. I don't much like the idea of it being a pulse-rifle, due to the added redraw penalty associated with weapon-based APP/PPPs, but that's really my only complaint with that portion. All-in-all, I like the idea, but the whole APP/PPPs are in a bit of flux atm, due to possible changes that'll come with Going Rogue (and side switching, more specifically)*, so how much I'd wanna see a new patron added might be largely nullifed if the APPs for Villains provide enough extra variety (assuming that's how it'll even work).

*Unless you're in Closed Beta, in which case you know exactly what is, or isn't, coming.

I've never heard anyone mention this before... Has this actually been shown to be the case by experimentation/a red name confirming that's how it (at least currently) works? That's definitely something that should be better known, if true.

The weird part about this is the packet loss stops when I zone or enter/exit a mission.

Once I do that everything returns to normal for another 10 minutes (then the packet loss starts again). I've been able to replicate this problem every single time I've played in the past week or so.
That suggests to me that it's a constant problem whenever you're established to something for more than 10 minutes (since changing zones means a new connection).

I've swapped servers (east and west coast) / characters (hero and villain side) / computers (one with vista, the other with xp) and have witnessed the same result every time. I'm not sure if this is a network or client issue, and I don't have access to the european servers as I started with a US client.
This largely rules out an issue on the server side, or the client side, so that leaves some piece in the middle. I'd suggest trying to reset your router, and if that doesn't work trying to replace it if you have another handy.

    Quote:
Also I've heard there is a network tool? I've looked through multiple threads trying to access it but I am unable to for some reason. (The CoH ftp server doesn't allow me to connect).
You can find the trouble shooting tool here, but like you said the link to the ftp server just results in failure (even using the passive mode like they recommended, in Opera, Chrome, and IE). It looks like it's a problem on their end.

I have a theory that your problem is actually unrelated to CoX, but is related to the length of a connection to the remote system, that after ~10 minutes it just begins to start losing packets in a predictable pattern... unfortunately I can't think of any good tools to test that theory. It's likely due to some interaction with a NAT router, as UDP isn't truly stateful protocol... but NAT pretends it is.
  15. If you're from other various fantasy MMOs that are big on the Holy Trinity (DPS, Tank, Healer), you'll find that this game's emphasis on (de)buffing over healing quite jarring (healing is a reactive measure, that sucks horribly against spike damage, or just large amounts, while (de)buffing is proactive).

If you play on redside, the Holy Trinity is even more shattered (the VATs are even less reminiscent of traditional classes than hero side).

You can do it manually, by opening the Terminal.app (IIRC, in the Utilities subfolder of the Application folder) and running a traceroute on the updater server's IP address (it's listed on ParagonWiki, but unfortunately it would appear to be down right now so I'm not sure what it is).

Have tried rebooting (which.. should never really matter on OSX) and no luck.
CoX for OS X uses Cider, which is based on Cedega, which is based on Wine, and they all start various background services, that sometimes hang and persist in the background, needing to be manually terminated so they can be restarted... generally a reboot is the simplest way to do that, without having to explain the details of the OS X task manager. There's also quite a lot of other system state on any OS, including OS X, so a reboot can often help (the micro-kernel like system just means that if you know enough about how to control it, you should be able to restart various services without a reboot to achieve a limited similar effect).

    Mutan Mayhem

I'd recommend trying calling them again (although, don't do it during the weekend/outside of their business hours). The one time I had to call them, it didn't take that long to get through (5-10 minutes at most... and I've waited more than 45 minutes on Dell every call), and they were able to fix the issue right on the spot for me (it was account related).

I am going to purchase a server transfer and try Union.
I'd recommend just rolling an alt on Union (at least at first), since that's completely free. Also, definitely join some Global Channels on your server (checking in the server-specific board is a good way to find them), those are an EXCELLENT way to find teams for TFs/SFs/raids/any random content, as well as just being entertaining.

CoX has a lot to offer, and is going to have a good bit more (especially end game!) come Going Rogue.

    Hamidon's spawn isn't announced, IIRC.
It isn't. It's triggered by defeating a random number of the Devouring Earth Monsters in The Hive, which causes all the remaining Monsters to retreat back into caves.
  21. You'd likely have to find some third party of questionable reputation, as NCSoft is (suspicioned) to be unable to distribute it in the US due to their settlement with Marvel (or was it DC?), or something along those lines.

Either way, it'll be out of date and would (IIRC) require patching to support english.
  22. Heroes are just afraid of change. If you're already there, it's fine.
  23. Open your Powers window, then click 'Combat Attributes'. Tada! A huge list of all your stats (right click on one and you can monitor it in a smaller window of hand-selected options).

  24. Comic culture is huge on stereotyping, along with Black & White characters... which is why people have trouble thinking slightly different to justify necro/thugs/mercs/demon summoning... but don't bat an eye at Dark Servant or Infernal
