Presumably these teams prefer players who know how to handle themselves in these high-challenge scenarios. Since there is no easy way to advertise that you are an expert or that your build is all IOed out (or that the opposite is true), what is the usual recruiting method that maximizes success?

Do players respond with tells saying things like, "Hey I'm a Master-of expert, please invite me", or "I'm a Master-of noob who needs experience, would you take me"? And what sort of response do tells like the latter typically elicit?
Part winging it, part asking, part knowing what you know.

When most Master Of teams form, they actively say it's a MO-run forming, need (this), (this) and (more of this), and it usually pertains to what the team is lacking and will need to get the MO badge, like debuffing, tanking, etc.

And those outside that range of need will be told no, unless they can't find anything that fits the hole in the team. Then you may get in if the team lead is feeling generous and brave enough to take someone that doesn't fill a hole.

As for the response? It'd depend on the team lead. There have been times on normal teams when my Dark Defender was kicked because I was Dark and not Empath. Not for a TF, I mean just normal teaming!

However, usually the team lead will tell you what will need to be done and the team should help you along.

And email... yeah. The "Spam" button helped - as soon as you selected one, it'd block all from that sender (which could take out 10-20 at a whack.) But not logging in a character for a week? Ugh. Spend the first ten minutes just cleaning out email.
Heck, I remember when it was getting bad enough (it was just before the lockout of tells/email) that I started getting porn spam!

And not just your typical porn, I'm meaning CHILD PORN!

Or, I think it was. It was in such garbled Engrish that it was hard to understand, but it included words like '14yo' and 'you happy lot see' (or something similar).

I sent a petition with the global name, what it said and immediately deleted the e-mail.

And this was after I had gotten a dozen plus normal porn spam in e-mail. I never would have thought that superhero pedophilia was a big enough market to go to such lengths.

Maybe it's different on other servers or if you're joining teams that are just forming through Broadcast, but if you find the right server with the right global channels*, it shouldn't be an issue.
Of all the speed TFs I've been on (not a large number, but there's been many), I've never exactly been able to 'keep up' with the majority of the rest, but I've never lagged behind to an extreme or sat at the doors.

Most of the team did what they knew what had to be done and a few stuck with everyone else that wasn't as quick as the real speeders. Just one of those 'unspoken strategies' that just happen as people play.

From my experience, most teams will understand if you're not as quick as the master runners who know exactly what is where and when and help you keep going as fast as you can. More so when you let them know you're not the fastest or strongest but willing to give it your all.

That part is very true. I myself like a little of ether at different times.

Just last week during my bi-weekly D&D (well, Pathfinder) game, my team came across a single lost damsel in distress. A very beautiful one at that. We all were very happy to help her, and traveled with her to her village to help. Before we got there, we had to set camp.

Turns out the beautiful lady was a Succubus. Our group is level 7 (of 20) and facing something like a demon isn't much of a surprise, but would be taxing without the right equipment. She hit hard, was hard to hit, and worse has DR 10/-, meaning that no matter what we hit her with, 10 points of that damage would be just ignored (unless we had cold iron or holy weaponry....which we didn't). The fight was long, difficult, but OH so much fun!

But there are times where I want to steamroll something. That's when Dynasty Warriors comes in. Even before a character gets half-way to max level or strongest weapons, you can take down HORDES of soldiers with no real threat to you. Swing your spear and kill half a dozen soldiers, swing it again, kill the rest and nearly kill their captain! Heck, in Dynasty Warriors 4, Lu Bu, the biggest strongest guy in the land and That One Boss and is SO POWERFUL he TAUNTS someone they just DIE! Normally, you use the taunt to make the enemies lose their guard, letting you attack them before they can block again. But not Lu Bu. His taunt does that AND causes damage, and when he's strong enough and the enemy is injured, they will simply die on the spot.

There are times where it's gratifying to be able to kill waves upon waves of enemies and come out without even dirt on your armor.

  8. They weren't giving you points retroactively. They only started 'counting' your subscription for free points at the start of July (I think). You weren't shortchanged any.

EDIT: Muhahah! Finally! Ninja'd someone! *placate* *runs*
  9. You're either going to have to skip a LOT of content or bite the bullet and RP things in your head different from the game, like I do while playing Fallout 3/New Vegas. When I take a bad hit from a nearby rocket explosion in game it's just 'fast travel to home, find my Doctor Bags, and sleep for 8 hours to restore lost HP' while in my head my current follower lifts me up with my arm over their shoulder and helps me back to my home/base, patches me up/resets bones/tends to other medical treatments, and I spend time recovering while the follower does the daily chores of getting food/water for me.

While I certainly could have my character do full days of Wait/Sleep/Wait/Sleep for the time it'd take to heal up that way naturally, I don't really see the point of going that far to stay within character to the RPing in my head.

And RPing things differently wouldn't be a bad thing, unless you're really wanting to go through the trouble of street sweeping a lot, because a lot of contacts have even just accepting a mission or turning in a mission make mention 'Explain what's going on' which would be difficult to near-impossible to do without some kind of medium of communication, even if just basic handsigns, sign language, or emoting.

The only thing I can think of for things to skip would have to be just going through each and every contact listen on the Paragonwiki and finding anything that has your character talking or explaining events.

That said the same article mentioned that yes it is a legal clause but it is doubtful it could actually be enforced. Ie it wouldn't stop you from filing a class action lawsuit but then they probably could legally terminate your account if you did. ::shrug::
Reminds me of the EULA Adobe Photoshop has. It says you can't say 'That image was photoshopped! I can see the pixels.' You have to say "That image was enhanced with Adobe Registered Trademark Photoshop Registered Trademark, I can see the pixels."

And yes, according to that info, you have to include 'Registered Trademark' in the sentence.

You'd soon find the forums full of suggested builds which would begin to seem a bit like the ATs we now know.
It does depend on the game.

An example would be the Dynasty Warriors series, you always start underpowered, but by the time you get half-way through the character's levels/weapons/items, you become grossly OVER powered and can wipe the floor with anything and everything you face, even LuBu.

The game series has always been only a moderate success here in the states, but it's been a HUGE hit back in Japan and seems to be keeping its hit status there.

The same sticky situations that often force teaming in other MMOs, actually.

Possibly the most beneficial mistake the devs ever made was that they were so good at handing out game-breaking levels of power at launch (by misunderstanding, by improper judgment, and even by typo) and so bad at figuring out how to reign it in that by the time they figured it out and gotten their arms around the problem around I6ish, they had over a year and a half to observe how the City of Heroes playerbase dealt with such levels of power.
These remind of "Jack's Vision" way back when. Where '3 Minions or 1 Lt=1 Player' and you were gonna need a few inspirations for it. Wanted to fight more than that? You'd need a whole LOT of inspirations or a small team of 2-3. Wanted to fight a single Boss class? You'd need a team of at least 5, and it'd be a rough fight. An Elite Boss? You'll want a full team of 8 to take that guy on. And an AV? Well, you're going to need a specially picked full team of 8 to even have a chance!

One time years ago, a friend of mine and her team of 8 was taking on Tyrant. Couldn't even dent his HP one bit and they had a Rad/Rad Defender with them. It got to the point that people would quit the team (but not exit the mish) and more people would be invited. By the time they had almost 15 people beating on him and his HP wasn't moving, they figured on calling it quits.

Granted, yes that ONE instance was thanks to a typo in an AV's regen rate (someone moved a decimal point the wrong way) but one has to wonder if that was something Jack would have wanted to fit his 'vision'.

Didn't the Devs say that was the original design for fighting Hami? I faintly remember a post about it saying something to the effect of:

"Yeah, the original idea we had when designing it was you let the Yellow Dawn happen, then pull Hami into a corner to continue the fight."

"And no, we've never been able to do it that way ourselves."

If you did, nobody BUT politicians and former politicians could say anything about the government, only police and former police could say beating up a helpless suspect is wrong and only chefs could say a burned meal is bad cooking.
While those who are not trained in a field may not know every finite detail required to work in the criticized field, and sometimes knowing some of those details can explain how some things are done, one can see where errors are made when they're glaringly obvious.

An example would be the leader of one BAF I was on. He was micromanaging everyone to the point of ludicrous. When fighting Nightstar, she was pulled to the court like he asked. That's fine, it's one of the usual spots to fight her.

But he insisted that she be pulled to a specific SPOT on the court. And I don't mean 'close to the edge Siege is pulled from' kind, I mean 'Get her on the exact corner of the court and grass!' and when she was some 20 feet away from it his requested corner? "STOP ATTACKING! She's NOT on the corner yet! Pull her closer! She needs to be STANDING ON THE CORNER"

And then he wondered why people stopped following his orders.
  19. You also have to remember that the people who fix bugs aren't (always) the same people who make the new stuff. I seriously doubt that SexyJay or Noble Savage fix bugs in the game maps, or the powers team have anything to do with map bugs.

While there may be some overlap in a person's training in working on the game coding, I don't see how making a beam rifle equates to not fixing a map bug.

That reminds me of a guy I knew years ago. We were part of a small group of friends that at least knew of each other, and we all gave our own little (lack of?) talent for the fandom we were part of.

One of my friends of this was an artist, and the guy I was talking about would do nothing BUT point out everything that was wrong about every single picture my artist friend would draw to the point that my artist friend didn't want to post any artwork he did. The guy didn't even understand why, even after a half-dozen of us explained it to him.

See, he figured that any praise is worthless. Praise is automatically assumed by everyone for everything, and so you shouldn't even say it because praise doesn't improve anything. He even mentioned he didn't understand why things like game reviews gave positive grades since, again, the praise is worthless.

Granted, that's not what's going on here, but it just reminded me of the guy...who I can't remember his name now.

HAH! A friend of mine did that for his toon, a little mouse hero.

As for the OP. Your GF is an experienced FPS-er, so I'd say get her to try an Assault Rifle Blaster. Devices would be a fitting secondary, and go well with the basics of FPS-ing style play.

Another thing you could do, if you're gonna roll up a new toon to team with her, make an Assault Rifle Defender with maybe Empathy, Dark or (for concept) Traps. This would let you stick within the familiar circle of FPS Support (think your Engineer to her Soldier from Team Fortress 2) which would hopefully ease her into the MMO world.

One thing that can also help, to a point, is the camera. When I was getting a buddy of mine introduced to CoH, I had him press B to zoom the camera to first person, if only to help him get acquainted to the game's movement. It DID suck when enemies were behind him and such, but it at least helped him familiarize him to the controls since he was an FPSer and not a 3rd Person gamer. He grew out of using the first person camera (thankfully), and it worked out well as a crutch to get him started.
  24. I've been having problems with Barrier. After about two or three uses, I start to get a headache. I'm not sure what part is giving it to me though.

I'm mostly sure that it's from the initial Big HUGE WHITE Flash, if I close my eyes just before the flash then my headache doesn't hit. But I still get a small amount of eye strain from the shield effect. It doesn't seem to matter what color I make it, but I haven't tested it with bright colors, just the default and dark blues in my attempt to make it as invisible as possible.

This may go back to the original Sonic graphics. The Sonic Shields would give me a headache withing a minute of being put on my toons, and give me far more eye strain than 10+ Hours of TV or Gaming ever had.

Thing is, I'm not prone to seizures; I've watched the banned 'Seizure Pokemon' episode and wondered what the deal was and have enjoyed many other anime that had wildly flashing colors or patterns that have been known to cause problems without any side effects on my part.

    I'm also not allergic to tomatoes or pepperoni. I'm allergic to Eucalyptus. If I'm around the tree, I get flu-like symptoms within ten minutes. If it's in a body care product, like one anti-pimple soap I tried, it'll turn my skin red with only a light application and immediate washing off (as the instructions say to do) and felt like my skin was starting to burn. Sorry for the topic drift. ^.^;
