Quote:I've been running into this a lot on tip missions, myself. I usually run +0/x3 on my Brute without many problems... when I started running tip missions to take her heroside, I eventually just gave in and lowered it to +0/x0. Seems like every other spawn had two bosses in it, and fighting a Mu boss and a Toxic Tarantula both at the same time sucks.I've been feeling the same way about a lot of the Tip missions I've been running into, especially in the late 20's/low 30's, back on Primal Earth. If I wanted to fight three bosses at once (1 boss summons 2 bosses as an ambush at 3/4 HP) then I would have cranked up my difficulty first.
As for Praetoria, I haven't been able to read the whole thread, but I have to agree with the people who find it too hard. Destroyers get high-damage hold-, immobilize-, and knockback-resistant guys in the single digit levels, which basically spells instant death for my Blaster or Dominator if I don't have several inspirations free, since my only self-defense is trivialized. Ghouls seem to like having a spawn, then another spawn set to drop from the ceiling on top of it. Ambushes are everywhere and sometimes triggered by things like walking through a certain point on the map, so they're hard to predict.
Can I get through it? Yeah. I've only died a few times, thanks to burning lots of inspirations and taking a lot of downtime to rest. But is it particularly fun? ... well, no. Progress is often slow and tedious, and there are some missions where I have to rest after every spawn--three +1 Resistance minions can almost kill my Blaster through a purple inspiration, and this is when I'm pretty much flooring their recharge with Psychic Scream and Frost Breath and juggling one with Nemesis Staff. Just what else am I supposed to do to mitigate these guys?
Disclaimer: I've only run relatively high offense/low defense characters in Praetoria so far, so my perspective might be a little skewed. But even for a defenseless character, the low levels probably shouldn't be this dangerous. -
Well, one of my Big Main Characters who is a hero should actually be a rogue... I originally made her just to settle an argument with a friend over whether it was possible to be both evil and a hero, so she is very much in it just for the prestige, money, and preserving the status quo in Paragon (because she's actually, when you get down to it, pretty likely to die in about ten minutes somewhere anarchic like the Isles.) She'll save you, but only so she can call in a favor from you later. She'll clear out a warehouse full of gang members, but only to take all their toys for experiments (the salvage system was a godsend here.) Really belongs as a Rogue. Now if I could just tolerate doing 33 missions to change her into one...
Quite a few of my villains belong as Rogues, though. I've got a handful who actually do have big evil plans and such, but most of the rest don't care who the job's coming from as long as it pays. I think the way villainside is set up encourages this, really, since the easiest way to make a character fit in with the mission structure there is to give them a mercenary outlook on life. -
Incidentally, for anybody else suffering this, turning FSAA off and turning shadow quality down a bit took my framerate from 10 to 50.

Yep, looks like that's the issue. I benchmarked in Unigine, and my average FPS was 51 for DX11 versus 17.5 for OpenGL. Guess I'll just need to wait for ATI to release an update. Thanks for the help, folks.

Quote:Is there a recommended OpenGL benchmarking program I could use to test if the performance still sucks outside of CoH?That being said, 10.7 has some known performance regressions on OpenGL on certain graphics cards. Also--I just remembered that the ATI driver updates like disabling Crossfire afterward, and I checked to make sure that hadn't happened. Crossfire's on, alive and well.
-
I updated the drivers for my video cards yesterday to the most recent (Catalyst version 10.7, Catalyst Control Center 2010.0706.2128.36662.) Which was all well and good... until I logged back into CoH and found that my framerate was abysmal. I turned on showfps to find that it was hovering right around 10 FPS. Just prior to installing the new drivers, I was getting much, much better framerates with these settings.
And this wasn't in Praetoria with a thousand people around or something--it was at 7 AM in Founder's Falls, without a soul in sight, and it followed me to every zone I went to, including after I restarted the game. There was also nothing processor-intensive happening--I checked Task Manager, and the only thing doing much at all was CoH itself.
I'm reluctant to roll back to the previous drivers, since I suspect some BSoDs I was having were due to those, but I'd also like to make sure I'm not missing something obvious before I go turning my graphics down to Pac Man levels. Any ideas?
Below are my CoH Helper and Hijack This logs.

Hmm, might have to give this a try. My Ice/'s lifespan always drops significantly the moment the fight has been going long enough for a few enemies to trudge out of AA. I always avoided the immob over it negating the knockdown on Ice Slick.

Quote:Yeah, uh. Can we vote against comics? >.>Used to like Megatokyo until it started getting too serious and relationshipy. Pretty much happened when the guy Largo is based on left it, I believe. I still kind of liked it, but I'm not all that keen on a straight relationship tale. That stuff was okay when it was still mixed in with a lot of humor and game references. I still have a "Does anyone here speak l33t? t-shirt, heh. That and the rent your own Godzilla bits were my favorites, I think.
It saddens my heart to see no Dinosaur Comics or Oglaf on the lists.
All the webcomics I read commonly (no links since I'm in a non-webcomic-friendly type of place at the moment. Google them.) Pretty much all recommended:
Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal
Chainsawsuit
Dinosaur Comics
Penny Arcade
Wondermark
XKCD
Hark, a Vagrant!
Keychain of Creation
Doctor McNinja
Axe Cop
NSFW ones:
Oglaf
Lego Robot Comics (also tasteless and crude!) -
These are basically my thoughts on elec so far. I went elec/elec, because the primary looks like it'll support spending every moment in melee range, and electric assault enjoys that.
-
Solo, I use Jolting Chain to open--having the enemies spend time on their butts in waves softens up the alpha pretty well. I'm only at level 7, though, so I'm not sure where it'll sit in my esteem once I have more options.
-
There is this, at least. Both on the forums and in-game, I saw a decent population of new players trickling in before GR. Oddly enough, I haven't noticed any since, but it could just be eclipsed by all the returning players.
-
-
Personally, I'd say Plant is easier than Earth... unless, ironically, you're playing a Villain or Rogue. Arachnos' legions of mezz-resistant lieutenants and bosses proved to be a consistent pain in the neck for my Plant/ dom, while my Earth/ had enough tricks to reliably delay them until I could stack mezzes.
-
Quote:Pretty much all of this stuff. I'd actually like to take Taunt on most of my Brutes for extra aggro on groups, but very few of my them can fit it in before the mid-40s (the fact that most patron pools have an AoE in the middle has a lot to do with this, since I can usually really use another AoE.) And with how self-sufficient most villains are, teams rarely need a tank-type to do anything other than take the alpha.here's why my main didn't bother with taunt...
It interrupts my attack chain, taking away valuable smashing time.
I have other powers I desperately want to take, especially at low levels.
I solo a lot.
Redside teams, especially PUGs, are usually every man for themselves, I certainly can't count on every corr on the team to go out of their way to heal me. -
I actually do the opposite. I like to park characters with about 3-5 bubbles to go. That way, I have incentive to play them for a while. If I log in and level in the first half hour, the sight of aaaaaaaaall those empty bubbles just reminds me of how long it'll be before I get anything new.
-
I've only had a chance to test this solo on my Claws/WP, but... the Fury change actually helps there. I still plow straight to the 70-85% Fury range pretty effortlessly, but it drops a heck of a lot slower if I need to run half a mile between spawns (like, say, every freaking blue cave mission ever.)
-
Not so much an outright mondegreen, but... Orange Range is a Japanese band, and they have a song named 'City Boy.' Except, thing is, it's hard for most Japanese people to pronounce the 'si' sound (like the first syllable of 'city,') so it tends to come out as 'shi.' And the song requires them to say 'city boy' about a dozen times in the chorus.
Hilarious. -
Quote:I tend to do this too, and it's making my Elec/Elec Dom feel really weird. TOO MUCH ELECTRICITY.Oh, and a strong aversion to "thematic" combos of sets for some reason. I'll tend to always try to avoid [Element]/[Element] like Fire/Fire and try and mix them up. As it turns out this tends to result in characters I find more interesting as well. The only exception I have is my Necro/Dark MM. It's not a rule, just something I've noticed when I look over all the characters I have
-
I doubt we'd get a power armor set... most powersets seem to be designed to be as open to interpretation as possible, and power armor feels pretty constrained compared to most of them. Shield Defense is kind of a special case, since we couldn't really have shields otherwise, whereas we've been able to make power armor outfits since launch. Adding new emanation points, like being able to have Energy Blast shoot out of a shoulder cannon or something, though...

General thoughts and impressions:
The outdoor areas and new mission maps feel a lot more open than the old stuff. Like whoever does maps slapped their forehead one morning and went, "Guys, do you know what we could do? Use open space!" I love the feeling it gives on the outdoor areas--makes it feel a lot less claustrophobic than the Isles and less fake than Paragon. Not sure how I feel about it in mission maps yet.
Both new-new (not previously available to preorder people) sets seem pretty sweet. I kinda wish we'd gotten these two early and DS/Dual Pistols later, but that's just my personal preference. Both Electric Control and Kinetic melee made me go, "Ooh, I wanna play that!" where I was mostly indifferent to DS and Dual Pistols. Electric Control has lots of nifty unique tricks, which is a nice break from the standard controller mix.
Only got to level 7 or so last night, but all of the missions I've seen so far have been pretty great. All the dialog and reading slows me down a lot--I'm not sure how much I'd like having long, branching conversations between every mission in the 40s, since I can barely tolerate the slow levelling rate there as it is, but it's nice for breaking up the tedium of being a lowbie.
I'm told there's a new nightclub area in Praetoria. Combine that with the fact that the big plaza would be perfect, and I'm curious how this will impact the Virtue RP community.
The enemy groups all seem to use entirely new stuff. It's an interesting change from CoV, which seemed intent on recycling as much as possible. I didn't find most of them particularly more difficult than CoH starting groups, but god, do Ghouls hurt in groups of more than 3 or so.
The phrase 'zowies' is kinda... eh.
It feels really weird to be walking around an unfamiliar zone with no travel powers for the first time in years. -

Quote:And not only that, but even if you solely play Defenders, you're probably used to having some substantial damage increasing tools in your primary if you play anything else except Empathy. I think this was my problem when I tried FF... I did it right after my Storm/Archery/Dark who was doing Freezing Rain + Soul Drain + Aim + Rain of Arrows constantly.I think a lot of the problem with the perception of FF has to do with the fact that, unlike almost every other defender set in existence, you're going to be spending a vast majority of your time using your secondary powers (or not doing anything at all). This means that much of your perceptions of the set are going to hinge on the effectiveness of your secondary (because that's what you're seeing the direct effects of for a majority of the time).
