  2. To be perfectly frank, I don't see that it's an issue. Do people think it's weird? Sure. Plenty of people don't get RP in general as a practice, and compounding that by introducing adult themes and/or sexuality just brings it one further step beyond.

Nevertheless, I don't believe there's any active persecution of those who MRP/ERP or ridicule of them in a serious sense. Perhaps some teasing, but this is frankly to be expected if someone makes it known that they enjoy engaging in such practices (what can I say, most people as a general collective never entirely get past the giggling at dirty words stage of maturity on the sex issue).

Ultimately, if this kind of RP is being done with consideration for others, it should be entirely private and no one else should know it is happening at all. So, no issue aside from genuine accidents of the mistell variety. However, if the intent is to be 'overheard' or to force this sort of experience on an unwilling party (who may or may not be an adult and certainly is not consenting), then it's unacceptable as well as rather creepy. As for the profiles thing, that's a bit of a sticky issue (no pun intended). On the one hand, I support the right of any player to put forth the description/RP that fits the character - I don't believe in curtailing creativity or in censorship as a general rule. That said, this is a Teen rated game and something placed in a profile is akin to a public posting. Yes, someone has to click to read it, but many people (especially on a high-RP server like Virtue) are going to open profiles as a matter of course. Essentially what all this boils down to is that I think profiles which serve as a 'teaser' are acceptable, but X-rated profiles not so much. This line, like much of this issue, is a subjective judgment.

I'd also add that the accusation of hypocrisy here only works if we accept the assumption that everyone who condemns or dislikes MRP/ERP is secretly doing it themselves or would like to be doing it themselves. Such arguments hold little weight with me. It boils down to the 'you're just jealous' argument and such a statement implies a smug sense of superiority with one's own positon (that surely everyone else secretly wants to be the same way). I find that sort of presumption repugnant.

As for uptight, granted. I think America could stand to be significantly less uptight concerning sexual matters and adult content across the board, and possibly a bit more uptight when it comes to graphic violence. But that's just me. YMMV.
  3. So, worst case, you may have to rename your characters if you are on trial and go away from a long period of time. The characters will not be deleted.
Figured it was worth making that absolutely clear.

    Enhancements

I'd also strongly recommend you (or any new player) do the tutorial and read everything there. It won't answer all your questions, but it provides good fundamental gameplay info.
  5. Big no to changing Soul Drain into a Build Up clone. Nothing wrong with having powers with different mechanics. And I love me some Soul Drain.
  6. Given that you're going to have Aid Other, I would go for the Resistance. Defense is binary - either something misses or it hits and does full damage (leaving you no leeway for Aid Other to work). The Resistance synergizes better with Aid Other as it keeps the pet from taking as much damage and giving you a chance to heal before the pet is defeated.

I don't have direct experience with either of these procs on a Warshade, so I can't speak from firsthand experience, but that is the choice I would make given the conditions you've described.

With Aid Other not in the picture, however, I probably would have gone with the Defense. No strong justification for it, just a personal preference for Defense with all other things being equal.

    WS Build?

I'll echo Dechs on this - it's the reason I generally don't like to post builds as a rule and especially don't like to post Kheldian builds. I'm of the opinion that if you make a build and post it for criticism, we in the Kheld community can help fine-tune it based on what you've placed emphasis on, what you valued and, what you didn't. This allows us to work with you to develop a build that suits how you want to play. Such builds tend to be more fun for the person using them, and work better than a build designed with someone else's preferences and playstyle in mind.

Edit: If you're looking for a rundown of the various powers with pros and cons of each, check out the Guides. That's what they're there for. I'd start with Plasma's Ultimate Guide and go from there. There haven't been a lot of new guides posted lately but there also haven't been many significant changes to Khelds so the info is still good (the inherent now works in the forms and some of the guides don't have full treatments on Inventions - I know mine doesn't as of the current version - but otherwise they should be applicable)

I'd also add Gravitic Emanation to the list of must-takes for a Tri-Form Warshade. Unchain Essence is powerful, but how useful it is depends on how much you use it (how often you're in human form and how adept you are and grouping enemies so there are lots of pals to 'splode when Mr. Body goes boom). As for auras like Inky or OD, you can obviously only run them while in human form so again it's a playstyle call. Some Tri-Formers find they spend a significant amount of their time in human form. Others are in human only so long as it takes to hit a click power or two and shift again. Clearly, the latter case doesn't benefit much from human-form toggles. And there are plenty of people who fall between those two extremes.
  8. Hmm, didn't know about the MekMen. I mentioned the Nems having fear protect already, I think, but it's good to see the numbers. It does seem inconsistent across the board, with not every 'robotic' enemy having the equivalent protection.

It's also a good point that the other effects of the powers still work, so they're not a waste even on these enemies. I should probably also point out that the Clockwork are not considered true robots and are very much susceptible to fear and sleep powers.
  9. Yes, Set Bonuses carry over to all forms. Any Sets slotted in forms apply in human form and any Sets slotted in human form apply in both Nova and Dwarf forms.
And actually, this as always been the case. While it's true that the inherent used to not work in the forms and now does, Set bonuses carrying over to forms predates that change. Enjoy!
  10. I've found that binds are easier for fast chaining of teleports than are macros, so a bind like this one:

    /bind SHIFT+LBUTTON "powexecname Shadow Step"

should work very well indeed. However, since you asked for a macro, I'll provide that as well:

    /macro TP "powexecname Shadow Step"

Why do I think the bind is better? Because if you bind with the left mouse button (LBUTTON) then you just hold down shift, click, and BAMF! you teleport where you clicked. If you bind to any other key or if you use a macro, then you have the extra step of placing the white teleport reticle where you want to go and clicking.

To sum up: If you use the macro (or bind any other key but LBUTTON), you still have to click the mouse anyway as a second step. So if the goal is to teleport faster...
  11. So I was idly badgehunting on my level 30 Tanker when I got a tell from someone I didn't know. He says: "Hey." "Want to team?" and then sends me an invite without waiting for reply. That's a minor pet peeve of mine, but the guy managed to use real words and punctuation, so I'm counting my blessings. I accept. The guy is a level 32 Storm/Dark Defender and in Atlas Park.

Me: Hey. So what's the plan?
    Him: i dunno
Him: i just reactivated my account
Me: Oh, okay. I have a few things we can do. You need any help with anything, have any questions?

    < 10 minutes of silence >

    Me: You still there?

< 20 minutes of silence, in which I resume my badgehunting figuring he'll time out >

    Him: yea
Him: i got 48 tailor seesions
Me: Yeah, when the Devs give out freebie tailor sessions you get one for each costume you have, so after a while you get a lot of them.
    Him: im used to WoW
    Me: k
Him: its hard to find quests
    Me: In WoW?
    Him: in this game
Me: Oh. Not really - what are you having trouble with?
Him: find missions and the being to weak to finish them
Me: You may need to respec. How long have you been gone?
Him: oh yea i was about to respec
Him: but then i thought the defender class was weak in general
Me: As for finding missions, there's a couple easy ways to do that. Probably easiest, simplest way is Police Scanner
Me: Eh, if you're going for DPS, then yeah. On the other hand, buffs and debuffs are huge in this game, so overall it's one of the stronger ATs. All-Defender teams flatten everything

I may have shown my Defender bias a little here, but the closest thing I have to a main these days is probably either my Warshade or my Rad/Rad Defender, both of whom have soloed for literally hundreds of hours. Also, the tendency to just label entire classes as 'teh weak' irks me since at least in this game it just isn't so.

Me: So anyway, I can show you how to get missions if you want. Or we can just run a few of mine, I'm good either way
    Him: ok
    Him: if you have one

Note: I have three missions, he has two.

    Him: im gonna respec
Me: Looks like you have some too, so we can do yours if you want. I was working on getting my cape and auras unlocked
Me: Okay. You just going to use a freebie? Probably have one if you've been gone a long time
Me: You know about ED? Not sure how long youv'e been away, enhancement bonus caps changed around Issue 6
Me: Hmm, guess you already started with your respec. Hopefully you know.
    Him: dimishing returns?
    Me: Yes, that's basically it
Me: In simplest terms, you get diminishing returns after three of the same SO-strength enhancement. I won't get into Inventions to keep it simple.

Him: well the city of villains population is diminishing it seems
Me: CoV has always had less of a following that CoH, but since they merged the games a while back most people play both.
Me: But you're right, generally speaking there are more people playing hereoes at any given time
Him: can we level up by doing something
Me: Yes, missions are the best way overall. Task Forces are better but you need more people and several hours for those and at this time we'd have trouble finding them

Him: can we do an AE with lot of easy enemies
Me: I guess, though that's kind of boring. So you basically just want to farm?
    Him: fastest way?
    Him: to level
Me: Fastest way to level up, overall, would be to hook up with a high-level farmer and have them powerlevel you.
Me: Of course you'd then be a high-level person who knew nothing about the game, so if I were you I'd at least catch myself up before I did that. But it's your character.
    Him: i dont know anyone

Around this time he passes me the star. We enter my mission, which I've set. It's the new cape mission, which I figure will be a good easy start for us and give him something he probably hasn't seen before to look at. We clear it easily.

Me: You could always try posting on the forums in the Victory Server section
Me: I don't have any farming characters on this server myself
Him: is there any pvp at level 50
Me: Yes, though a lot of PvPers left because of changes to PvP not long ago
Him: i was thinking of more coming from the endgame
Me: But you can still find some, especially if you go to the scheduled events
Me: Unlike WoW, this game isn't centered on the endgame much at all
Him: more on the generic werehouse missions?
    Him: thats bad

Okay, at this point it sort of seems like he's already decided not to like the game, but I give it my best shot at answering his questions as best I can. I've spent this much time and I'd hoped maybe to explain some of the appeal of the game, at least for me.

Me: More on the Task Forces and story content
Him: game sucks before i even get all of my powers
Me: I guess, if you want to look at it that way. Or you could say WoW sucks 'cause you have to get to the end to start playing
Him: so the levleing is the boring part
Him: and its pointless to level
Me: I'd disagree with the boring part, but there's not a huge big thing at 50, no
Me: There's PvP, and if you go for the high-end there's a lot to do there with IOs, but if what you really want is PvP/ganking with high-end gear then this isn't the game.
Me: That may change in the future, they're overhauling PvP now, but probably the majority of players don't PvP much

Him: you mean there is strategy to this coh pvp
    Him: wows has better numbers
    Him: for more depth
Me: Yes, there is. Powers work differently in PvP, travel poers suppress, there's heal decay- it's mostly balanced aroudn teams
Me: You mean population? Yeah, I know. That's what happens when you're made by Blizzard.
    Him: like better number calculator
Me: I'm not sure what you're talking about.
Him: wow has better real time strategy

Better real time strategy? For a moment I wondered if he had his Warcraft games confused. I think he meant real-time tactics in PvP.

Me: Okay, I'll take your word for it. Hated WoW personally.
Me: But I know people that play both it and this game
Him: this game is better visually
Me: I think the costume creator is still one of this game's best features, and with graphics overhaul coming in the new expansion it's going to be amazing
Me: If all you really play for is high-end PvP though, I think you may not be happy with the game as it is now. Most people focus on PvE. If you think that's boring, you might be bored a lot
Him: whats good about the pve

    Him: the missions get repetitive
Me: Well yeah, but that's true in any MMO
Me: But there's good story, especially in the TFs, unique maps, new powersets to try, team challenges, badges to earn, costume stuff to unlock
Him: you can end up doing multitiple missions in the same generic warehouse full of baddies
Me: Basically there's lots of cool stuff to see and do. But that's subjective.

And at this point he just logs off. Don't know if he got disconnected or just logged because he wasn't leveling fast enough, or what. I don't think he even bothered to read my answers to his "what's good about the PvE?" question. So he'd pretty much already decided that he was just going to blaze through to 50 so he could PvP with his character that he doesn't know how to slot or play. So that was frustrating.

So why am I posting this? I spent some time trying to help a player get back into the game and instead I got a guy who seemingly had already decided not to like the game. I do wonder if there's anything I might have said (or not said) that would have put a better face on our community, been a better ambassador so to speak. I didn't want to give him a false impression, but I do think I may have convinced him not to bother (or pushed him towards a conclusion he was already planning on making, more likely).

So what would you have said/done differently? I'm curious. And annoyed.
  12. Robots resist Psy damage heavily, but this does not translate to immunity to status effects. Fear works on robots. As far as I know the only group that heavily resists Fear is Nemesis.
  13. Also, once you get the Malta (either in an scanner mission or from Crimson), you might consider posting to get a group of people together to make the badging go faster.

Assuming you're looking for Zeus Titans, that is.

    Server Merger...

I'm with the "Nah" crowd. Bill puts up some good reasons why this is not a good idea. I'll also add that the things the OP seems to think it will accomplish (bring the game 'back to pretty close to what it used to be') would not be accomplished by a server merge. All that would do is cause a number of hardcore vets to quit as communities they are invested in are arbitrarily destroyed.

As for having more people outside, that's as much a result of instancing as an indicator of population. The OP is talking about seeing plenty of people outside, but it's important to keep in mind that factors like half debt in missions, mission bonuses, arc bonuses, Merits, fast travel options such as Bases have all contributed to an overall shift towards instancing in an already instance-heavy game. A vast majority of people online are going to be in instances. If those people are also employing /hide options (as many do, especially on Freedom), you will never know they are there.

All of this just means that you need to make use of all the tools available to get teams - simply shouting in broadcast or inviting people you see overland were never good systems to begin with and work when there's tons of people around outside. As there are few reasons to be outside on the maps anymore, you're reaching a fraction of the people you could. This is true on any server. Many of the so-called 'dead servers' are very much alive if one just uses tells, searches and global channels effectively.

Now, could the /search tool use some work? Absolutely. Would a "Looking for Members" option for teams be invaluable? Sure would. That is where we need some attention. Merging the servers is a radical move with a huge host of negative consequences and should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. And it's not even close to necessary now. As for cross-server PvP, I'm all for that.
  15. I think for a lot of proliferated powersets, people just use guides from the ATs the powersets came from, so there's less of a perceived need for a new guide. Since people can read Brute guides on Elec/Elec and adapt them, there's not as obvious a need for a guide on Tanker Elec/Elec. That's what I did when I made my Electric Scrapper and it's worked out pretty well for me.

This as opposed to, say, a brand new powerset like Shield Defense coming out which naturally demands a guide be written.
  16. Not much to add to what Mylia said. Global channels are the key to quick and easy teaming on any server, especially if you're coming from Freedom where you may be used to using a clunky method like broadcast to form up teams.

There's usually plenty of people to team with all over, but most of them are in missions so you have to know how to find them. On Freedom, since there's so many folks, you don't always need to use the other tools (though I find I still get better quality teams on average there if I do).

Use your global channels and send (polite!) tells to people at or near your level range and you should have a team in no time.
  17. To clarify, Warburg is the highest level PvP zone that has missions.

While you are lowered to 38 while in Warburg, it has an upper level of 50 for missions because there are no mission contacts in Recluse's Victory. Initially this was not the case, but it meant that level 50s could never get PvP missions and this was a problem if one wanted to get the badges for PvP buff and debuff missions on a character that was already 50. Hence, the change.
  18. You're not alone in that and I feel safe in saying that all of the regular posters in this section have that goal, to make the Kheldian AT better and more fun for all. We have disagreements about how that's best done, but it all comes from the same concern for the game and for this AT. I'm sorry if I sounded like I was coming down on you.

I think PBs in particular could use some kind of attention and I tend to more favor LordXenite's general approach more than, say, Bill's, though both are well-thought out perspectives on the situation. And while it's absoluetly true that there's some strongly held opinions around here, we generally don't let those opinions excuse bad behavior or trashing the wasy someone else likes to play. One of the many reasons I very much like this little niche of our community.
  19. Okay, seems like you just prefer to misunderstand, but I'll clarify one more time.

    1) I'm not saying the Samurai missions were pulled. I'm not saying that you are saying they were pulled. I am saying that you posted your OP rant and you added story elements based on the assumption that they were pulled as a corrective measure. I pointed out that such measures by their very nature don't work because they are window dressing on a farm mission rather than a story mission that happens to be farmed - a critical if often subjective distinction.

    2) You remain quite wrong on the subject of farms. AE missions are no different than regular missions with respect to their replayability. Timed missions aside, any player is capable of repeating any mission as many times as he or she likes, either by resetting the specific instance or by using Ouroboros. Since we now get experience while exemplared there's really no difference.

Is it easier to farm an AE arc? Sure, in many ways. There's player control over the content itself, the mission door is always in the same place, and you can repeat the mission immediately after you complete it without the need for additional steps like Ouroboros or resetting the instance.

Does the fact that it's easier to farm the AE mean that the AE is for farming, that farming is the purpose of AE arcs? No. Just because something is farmable doesn't mean that it exists solely or primarily to be farmed. The Devs have been extremely clear on this point - the AE is not a farming engine. If it were, only exploitative arcs would be removed and farm arcs would not. The fact that blatant farms are routinely removed bears out this point.

And, since you seem to be responding only to bits and pieces of what I've posted, I'll reiterate again that I am not arguing the Samurai mission was a violation. I am not arguing it was a farm. In fact I've already said I was suprrised to see it vanish and if it was indeed pulled then I think that was probably uncalled for. My response was to your intent to add story to a pulled arc in order to make it okay, something that in both theory and practice is dubious.

I was not making any kind of comment on the Samurai arc. It was popular and as far as I could see it wasn't a blatant offender, certainly not on the scale of farms I've seen in recent memory. As I've already posted all of this, however, I think this thread's reached its endpoint, at least as far as I'm concerned. And while I think that your heart was probably in the right place trying to restore a popular resource to the community, it was either pulled as a farm - in which case adding window dressing story doesn't accomplish much, or else it was pulled by Rafa (either due to inactivity or a deliberate pull by the author to make changes) - in which case it's his to do what he wants with and republish or not as he sees fit and really probably isn't anyone else's province to address.

It seems like a homage, rather than a retread with token story, would have been a better solution and could have featured real strides in narrative at the same time.
  20. You're quite welcome. Now that zone level restrictions have been lifted from the hazard zones and anyone can go there, some might argue that segregating the hazard zones doesn't make as much sense as it once did.

However, you'll have far, far fewer missions in hazard zones than elsewhere on average, so I still think it makes sense to put the city zones in one aggregate and the hazard zones in smaller aggregate elsewhere in the base. SG members will be using the city zone teleports to go from place to place and they'll get a heck of a lot more traffic than will the hazard zones.

Good luck with your base! I'm sure however you set it up, your SG mates will be appreciative to have the convenience.
  21. There's various approaches I've seen work. I think the important thing is just to have an obvious system rather than randomness.

Most people seem to split off the city and hazard zones, organizing them within those two groups either alphabetically or by level range. I'm more a fan of the latter.

So, for instance, you might organize this way:

    Atlas Park/Galaxy City
    Kings Row/Steel Canyon
    Skyway City/Faultline
    Talos Island/Independence Port
    Brickstown/Croatoa
    Founders Falls/Peregrine Island
    Rikti War Zone/Pocket D
    The Hollows/Perez Park

    Boomtown/Striga Isle
    Terra Volta/Dark Astoria
    Crey's Folly/Eden

If you go this route, I'd place the Hollow/Perez beacons on the telepad closest to the 3x4 room where the other hazard zone beacons are.
  22. It made sense to me. He basically called out the fallacy in your statement that all AE missions are farms. Unless you stretch the definition of farm to 'anything one does more than once', you're wrong. And if by those terms all AE missions are farms, then so is everything else in the game.

As for the what you said in reply to me, you're right, I don't know if the Samurai mission was pulled or not. And while people were definately farming it, that alone shouldn't be grounds for it to be pulled - people farm plenty of things that aren't purpose-built for farming and that's the critical difference. You're quite right that the Samurai mission could have vanished for other reasons.

However, your OP is specifically aimed at the assumption that it was pulled for farming reasons and your reasons for adding story are aimed at that assumption - this was what I responded to. If it (or any misison) is pulled as a farm, then adding window dressing backstory for the sole purpose of reintroducing the farm is unlikely to be effective. That was my point.

Whether or not the Samurai missions in particular were or were not considered farms by the GMs and whether or not they were pulled as such I of course do not know for certain. I personally didn't think they were blatant farms compared to some of the other offenders I've seen (Rikti Comm, Hami, etc) and was surprised to hear they'd vanished.

As for the AE system being inherently a farming system, that's just flat-out wrong. Nothing really more to be said there. Not only is it not a farming system, it's been stated I don't how many times (quite a few, from well before it was released and right up to the present) that it's explicitly not for farming. Of course, people abuse it anyway, but that's why blatant farms are removed. It's not a farming system. Yes, there are rewards, but the primary purpose of the AE system is player-generated content. Stories. Not farming. The fact that large numbers of players choose to focus on farming rather than story doesn't change the fact that the AE exists for the latter, not the former.

    Rad/Rad

I'd strongly encourage both of you to make your own builds and post them for review, as this helps us see where you're trying to go with the character and ultimately results in a character that's more custom-fitted to your playstyle versus picking up someone else's build and trying to fine-tune it after the fact.

That said, here is the Rad/Rad build I use. I'd also strongly recommend this guide.

A few notes on the build: It's designed as a team player/debuffer and to get maximum utility out of Choking Cloud, hence the accuracy bonuses and Tactics. This build works very nicely on TFs and in teams both large and small but is slow to solo. Again, this is my build designed to fit my needs. YMMV.
  24. Nice rant. Needs more CAPITAL LETTERS and exclamation points!!!!! to really sound rabid though.

However, it really seems like all of this is just you explaining how you made up some random story stuff and added it on to a popular farming mission in order to bring back the farming. Nowhere in this rant do you talk at all about what the story actually is, and spending "like an hour" on story is not exactly a strong selling point. I'd be more convinced if you were so proud of the story that you felt moved to share, well, any of it with the rest of us.

At the end of the day, it sounds like this was more about adding 'story' window dressing to the Samurai mission so that it could be farmed and less about telling a good story. So while I applaud the community-minded spirit you have in the first paragraph and always commend anyone who does something for the players at large, I wouldn't be suprrised if this too eventually gets pulled.
  25. I can see how you'd view it that way, but it seems needlessly negative. There's really no need for tri-form players and human-only players to be adversarial - in fact, many Kheldian enthusiasts play both variants (although, granted, most have a strong preference). Despite Kheldian players having differing, sometimes diametrically oppposing positions, we've generally been able to keep things civil in this forum and usually don't devolve into an us vs them polarization of either PBs vs WSs or Forms vs Human. It's just not productive and honestly most players in either camp aren't trying to keep the other down in any real sense.

Speaking as a primarily Tri-Form player, I've never opposed buffs to the human form. I've offered criticism if I felt an idea was unworkable or had flaws, but I've never opposed changes to Kheldians simply on the grounds that they might make human-only variants more popular. That's a pro, not a con. I'd also disagree with both the assessment that tri-formers have a poorly slotted pitstop human form (not necessarily so, though this is one approach) and the assessment that human form is "not quite satisfiyng" as is. Both seem to be dictating what is fun for all based on one person's subjective experienece, which isn't a particulary wise approach.

Also, and this is a bit of a pet peeve on my part, you've been posting in the Kheldian forums for a while now, Star Seer. Is it asking too much to spell "Kheldian" correctly?
