WS Build?

Alright, I'm stumped. Been ages since I played a WS, and while I loved the build then, I can't seem to figure out a build I'd like now. I want to Tri-Form so I have the options available for team situations as well as solo, not to mention the beauty of double mired nova. ^_^

I don't need to do anything crazy like +2/x8 Farming, nor do I need Perma-Eclipse. Just something that'll be fun and capable for solo and teams. Probably going to solo my way to 50 at +1/x2-5, depending on the mob type, if that helps. Slotting isn't even much of an issue, bc I'll likely just frankenslot, picking up a set bonus or two here and there as available. I really just need a list of Powers to take and about when I should take them.

Thanks in advance!

To be honest, there's really no one that can answer this without being you. You are the person who plays your warshade, and while I love my tri-former and can play him quite impressively, you might hate how he plays.

The difference between warshade builds is similar to the difference between two blasters using different powersets. Perhaps even the difference between any blaster and any controller. There really is way too much variation in a warshade build.

A little bit of a shameless plug here, but I'd suggest you read through this thread. The first post explains how I learned to play my tri-former, but the latter posts get into varied builds and playstyles that accompany them. If you like the way someone talks about their warshade, look at their build.

Well, I understand the variability of Kheldians. I'm not looking for a build so much as an idea of what I should be looking to fit into the build. I know the obvious must takes of Eclipse, the Mires, Nova/Dwarf forms (can't be tri-form without them ^_^), and Gravity Well, Dark Extraction, and Stygian Circle. Those are pretty much no brainers. What I don't know are whether other powers are worth taking or not, such as the damage and stun auras, the dead body boom power, and such. I can put em in order and figure out the slotting on my own, I pretty much just need Pros and Cons from the massive amount of experience you guys have.

Thanks!

I'll echo Dechs on this - it's the reason I generally don't like to post builds as a rule and especially don't like to post Kheldian builds. I'm of the opinion that if you make a build and post it for criticism, we in the Kheld community can help fine-tune it based on what you've placed emphasis on, what you valued and, what you didn't. This allows us to work with you to develop a build that suits how you want to play. Such builds tend to be more fun for the person using them, and work better than a build designed with someone else's preferences and playstyle in mind.

Edit: If you're looking for a rundown of the various powers with pros and cons of each, check out the Guides. That's what they're there for. I'd start with Plasma's Ultimate Guide and go from there. There haven't been a lot of new guides posted lately but there also haven't been many significant changes to Khelds so the info is still good (the inherent now works in the forms and some of the guides don't have full treatments on Inventions - I know mine doesn't as of the current version - but otherwise they should be applicable)

I'd also add Gravitic Emanation to the list of must-takes for a Tri-Form Warshade. Unchain Essence is powerful, but how useful it is depends on how much you use it (how often you're in human form and how adept you are and grouping enemies so there are lots of pals to 'splode when Mr. Body goes boom). As for auras like Inky or OD, you can obviously only run them while in human form so again it's a playstyle call. Some Tri-Formers find they spend a significant amount of their time in human form. Others are in human only so long as it takes to hit a click power or two and shift again. Clearly, the latter case doesn't benefit much from human-form toggles. And there are plenty of people who fall between those two extremes.

Other than the powers you listed:

Gravitic Emanation is a pretty nice power; don't be afraid of its kb.

In general toggles are not so great on a triform, so orbiting death and inky aspect are both low on the list, though some people like to use inky to stack with gravitic em to stun bosses.

The shields are are not super helpful either if you're going to be switching in and out of forms.

Gravimetric Snare, Shadow Blast, and Starless Step are situationally useful, but still not very.

Essence Drain is a sucktastic power, and Dark Detonation is not very useful to a triformer.

Shadow Cloak is very useful; combine with super speed or a stealth io for complete invisibility to most mobs.

Nebulous Form, not really that useful; its activation time is still 3seconds, much longer than other phase powers.

Stygian Return: I don't like a power that helps me after I'm chewing pavement when I can replace it for something that keeps me from chewing said pavement.

Unchain Essence: big AoE damage for human form, but I could just switch to Nova and get more AoE damage. Has a long recharge too. But it also has a stun component, which is quite nice and why I still have it.

Quasar: weak for a nuke, but with mires it can be very strong. We also get stygian circle to go back to full endurance after using it, so I would recommend this power although it's not something you will constantly use.

You definitely want Hasten; others have found use for the Medicine pool, Presence pool, and Concealment pool (this one for set mules).

Thanks Microcosm, that was exactly what I was looking for!

Not to put down Justaris' help. It's surely appreciated, as is Dechs'. Wasn't looking for a build, so much as what's hot and what's not, so to speak. Micro gave me that info, so I'm a happy Shade now.

Thanks again folks!

Alright, I guess I can give you my opinions on a TriFormShade. Bear in mind that they are exactly that. Opinions.

Gravity Well, Sunless Mire, Eclipse, Stygian Circle, Nova and Dwarf are all must haves. Absolutely non-negotiable.

Hasten comes strongly recommended. Requires minimal slotting (only one additional slot) for an enormous benefit.

Other great powers are Dark Extraction, Gravatic Emanation, Unchain Essence and Quasar, in that order of importance. Fluffies are great damage output, but some find it difficult or annoying to keep watching for the summon to recharge. You can get along without Gravatic Emanation, but I find it's great for bunching mobs in a corner for Mire/Eclipse if they're too spread out. It's also a great panic button since it's a guaranteed stun on LTs and minions. Unchain Essence does great damage and allows you to stack stuns with GE, except that this one is only a 50% chance. It also requires a dead body, and many won't want to be bothered by that hassle. Quasar is really situational, but if you have a blue and Stygian Circle is up, Quasar without fear. These are playstyle choices and require slotting to be useful. If you don't think you'll use one of these powers, don't take it. Save the slots where you can.

TriFormShades have more powers than slots, so you need to find a lot of "one slot wonders." Shadow Cloak and Super Speed make for a really cheap way to get perfect stealth, and since you get Shadow Recall as an inherent, TFs will love you. Shadow Cloak is also a good spot for a LotG Recharge. Starless Step is really useful for those mobs that get glitched into cave walls, as well as pulling out the voids if you worry about that sort of thing. Stygian Return doesn't need slotting either, and let's face it, you will hit pavement, and you'll be surrounded by mobs when you do. Stygian Return makes you invulnerable for 10 seconds. Plenty of time to Eclipse/Mire, Unchain/Quasar. I took the first three powers of the concealment pool and combat jumping just to slot LotG Recharge IOs.

As was said, a shifting shade has little use for toggles, but I still took Inky Aspect. It only has an Acc/Stun enhancer in it, and I think I might have used it twice, but I can't think of anything better to take in it's place.

I don't have any other toggles, Nebulous Form, Drain Essence, Shadow Blast, or Dark Detonation, and I don't miss them. Eclipse gives me enough resits, Stygian Circle gives me enough healing, no one needs a 3 second delay on phase, and I do damage in Nova or Dwarf. Take that for what it's worth.

In closing, remember: You can ask 100 shades for 100 builds; they'll all be different and they'll all be fun to the person playing them. What matters is how you like to play your shade.

Yeah, I know all about that. Just been so long that I've forgotten what's really good and what's pretty "meh." I'll probably take the S/L and En/Neg shields. I like dwarf, but sometimes it annoys me. Being a touch more survivable without it would be a nice thing. The En/Neg shields protects against the 3rd most common damage type, and a while back they changed the quantum/void damage output to be negative, as opposed to untyped. Makes the "must take" auto power and the en/neg shield very handy to have around. Taking those two shields also lets me get some minor set bonuses for recovery and such, as well as giving me more places to put a steadfast kb IO so I'm not getting tossed around while trying to eclipse/mire, or when I absolutely need to pop Stygian Circle to finish off the boss after taking everything else out. Not being forced to switch to dwarf makes me more versatile, and would make my playing the character more interesting. As you have all mentioned, it's a matter of playstyle, and Dwarf has always been more of a backup tank or oh crap power, used like most tier 9 powers, to get me through a particularly rough spot that my human/nova powers just can't cover, for whatever reason.

One of my binds (to switch to human form) will include toggling on the S/L shield. From there it's just one click to having the en/neg shield if I need it.

Thanks for all the info and advice!

It's mostly a frankenslot build so that most every power I use is enhanced well, IE good acc/dam, rech and end as needed. Fit in some small recov bonuses to make up for the lesser slotting of Stamina. Regen is pretty good for those times when I don't have fuel for Stygian or if I miss once or more with dwarf drain. KB protection is well set, because like I said before, I use dwarf as more of a backup than a prime power, so I need the KB protection to keep me from getting tossed around when I need to be positioned for eclipse/mire.

Eclipse and Mire are not perma, but that's fine. I'm not looking for some uber build where I can farm +2/x8 taking two spawns on at a time. I just want to have em readily available for when I do need them, on a spawn by spawn basis. 3 Forms of stealth by the time I hit 38 will mean that I can get in the middle of the mix to pop eclipse without being seen. Once eclipse is up, everything else is gravy.

I added Shadow Blast to complement Gravity Well for those times when I am in human form. Blast is a relatively standard attack as far as activation time goes, so after I eclipse and mire, I can Well and Blast the boss or any particular threat (sappers, void/quants, and the like) and finish them (and the rest of the mob) off with Nova.

So, given what I've said of my general playstyle, does this build seem sufficient? Are there any changes to slotting, power order, or even power choices you guys would make to the build for better efficiency/performance?

I have found that a single -kb IO is enough for almost everything in the game; if you want to keep three, though, putting a Zephyr -kb in shadow recall would free up a slot elsewhere.

Normally the Fitness pool is seen as nigh useless for a triform as it does not work in forms, but from what you've said it sounds like you might be running around in human form a little more than most so that might be worth it.

I believe the Performance shifter proc actually nets more endurance over time than the one you have in Nova, but I'm not sure on this.

You're one slot away from some nice recharge bonuses in Dark Nova Emanation/Detonation, which I think you could scrape up slots for.

My opinion, and there are many who disagree with me on this, Sunless Mire doesn't need to be slotted for damage, just some recharge and acc; it does smallish base damage and comes up too slowly.

Favorite low-end frankenslotting on eclipse: Aegis res/rech, Titanium Coat res/rech, Impervium armor res/rech, Impervium armor res/end/rech, and an IO acc if you do not have a ton of global acc bonus.

You're very likely going to run dry on endurance in Dwarf. You might want more end reduction in its attacks, as well as a performance shifter proc in it itself.

Slotting Stygian Circle for Heal is not really necessary, so you can grab a slot from there.

Hefty +acc slotting in Nova single target attacks might not be necessary because of the inherent tohit buff, which you have enhanced, in nova.

And Ribosome's are about as expensive as the LotG's at the moment.

First of all, on the Ribo matter, you see I have LotGs in the build. This is a goal build. If I never achieve it, so be it, but it's nice to see what I could do with it without going extreme. I'm more than willing to drop a couple hundred mill into this shade, especially if I enjoy playing it. But I'm not casual enough to purp my warshade.

I reworked it a touch, taking into account some of your advice. I had completely forgotten that Eclipse has to hit, so I made a couple slotting changes that gives me more than a basic IO worth of Acc and caps out it's recharge.

The main reason I had the heal slotted into Stygian is because it is my only heal in human form. If I only have 1 or 2 corpses to fuel it and I need big green numbers, having a little bit of heal added in can make the difference between life and debt. I know in that situation I could jump into dwarf, but there have been times in the past that I've died mid shift. SC's animation is 40% shorter than the shift into dwarf, and then I've got another 2s or so before the heal can help, providing it hits. That was my reasoning, until I actually *looked* at the base heal of SC (84%). It's high enough that even one corpse will nearly cap me off, and it will certainly buy me time to shift and get another heal from the dwarf. So I changed the slotting there to get better end mod and recharge, nearly ED capping both.

You are right about the Mires. I worked out a slotting that gets much better accuracy and recharge values for the same slot investment.

Changed the slotting for Dwarf Strike and Smite to give better end reduction. Between that and the 33% end reduction in the power itself, I should be fine on maintaining endurance. Other slotting had better recharge for better DPS, but given how little (relatively) I'll be using dwarf, I suppose that's not a major issue. Plus Dwarf Mire will help on DPS, being up for just about every mob, maybe even twice per mob.

Here's the new build. Critiques?

You definitely want damage in Black Dwarf Mire, it's your main form of damage in dwarf form. 5 Oblits is a good start, or frankenslot if you want more endurance reduction. Slot it as an attack as soon as you have the resistance in Dwarf Form done.

My Nova only has the Perf Shifter proc and it does fine. Black Dwarf is 3 resistance and a perf shifter proc as well.

And go for some more recharge, 5 slot Crushing Impact in Dwarf Smite/Strike and Gravity Well for some more recharge bonuses. See if you can 5 slot a Decimation set in 2 ranged attacks for a 4th and 5th 6.25% bonus.

The Grav Shield and Twilight Shield powers won't do anything when you're in either form, consider taking some slots from them. If you respec you can put lvl 3 and 5 slots in dwarf or nova form due to a long standing bug.

I did a quick change to give you some ideas. I like unchain essence cause it's fun blowing up corpses so I added that instead of the human ranged attack. I think you could take out both human shields because you won't be using them a lot but then again it's starting to look a lot like my own triform shade.

As Dechs says, a WS has to take a fair number of powers that don't need slotting. Even if you only use them in some missions, on some teams, vs some foes, its not like you'd have the slots to make something else really overshadow them. So some of what I will recommend is based on "niche" use.

Grav Emanation, as said, is handy for bunching mobs and its knockback will affect bosses. If you are running Inky, and the geometry is right, blow the spawn plus boss(es) into a corner, and run over and Mire/Eclipse off them so by the time the boss stands up hes stunned from the stacking, buying you time to blast the spawn. Inky is also nice when the spawns are on the large/dangerous side but you still want to Mire/Eclipse off them, it cuts the return fire some. Not a long duration stun, but a lot of WS playing runs on tight timing. And stun sets are cheap for good +recharge.

I tried to like Unchain Essence, but it was rare enough I had a handy body in the right spot early in the fight that I swapped it out for Quasar which is not a much longer recharge, has higher damage, and can be used when and where I want to. Friend of mine loves UE, so try it.

Ironically, I then ended up stripping the slots out of Quasar to sprinkle across the plethora of "travel powers" a WS can get for Zephyrs and now reach about 25% ranged defense in my favorite blasty Eclipsed Nova Tankmage form.

Interesting note; if you stack Shadow Cloak plus Stealth IO plus Superspeed, the turrets in Bloody Bay can't see you. Handy for grabbing Shivans. Rikti Drones still can, they are flagged to "ignore stealth". Shadow Cloak counts as a "travel power".

Starless Step in addition to its other uses lets you grab one mob to beat down and turn into an Extracted Essence before charging into a tough spawn. Beware; 50% chance of Taunt, 10' radius, so choose a straggler. Though I've also used this in the STF to pull the Patron AVs from out of line of sight, very safe. And another niche use, in the LGTF the mitos around the mini-Hamidon are NOT immune to TP foe, unlike real mitos, making it easy to pull them out and beat them down. Counts as a "travel power".

Nebulous Form, handy for "stealthing" missions with things like Rikti Drones and Cysts who see through stealth. Also for absorbing nasty alphas, like the one from the Clockwork King. Counts as a "travel power".

I also slotted both Mires for damage, others have made a good argument for the Dwarf one, I'm going to use the humanform one anyway on every spawn so I might as well soften them up and its about the same base damage as a defender AoE like Irradiate. Not going to bring tears of envy to a blaster, but defenders certainly slot up their AoEs.

I'll counter your build with my own that I'm using for my Tri-former (with great success). Do not overlook the POWER of being able to combine Inky Aspect, Orbiting Death and your Human Mire for some really awesome Rip-Tear-Shred-Mangle-Maim-Bend-Fold-Spindle-Mutilate-Behead-Dismember-Breath Mint action when teaming with a Tanker who manages aggro.

It's the end. But the moment has been prepared for ...

Posted

This is my build right now.
I'm still working with it. I plan on slotting Purples eventually.
Perma-Hasten, Perma-Eclipse.
I know Grant Invis slotting is like, "WHAT?" but oh well. It works for me
I'll be messing with it some more, but I don't want to lose a lick of recharge.
So if you want to suggest something, feel free to PM me.

Paragon Studios, thanks for all you've done. You've made this a great game, and a great community. I see this as six years well-spent. NCSoft, I'm seriously disappointed in you. This is not how you get or keep customers.
