I know. I was still going to do one. I tend not to enter into video contests because it's like pro-am and is unfair to people who don't do this all the time.
  2. I was seriously going to make a video before the end of the year, but I just capped a 12-month-and-2-week production by spending a hair-pulling 22-hour day finishing the documentary on New Hampshire choosing a state dog, so I don't want to see another editing program for at least a month. Or a dog or 7th grader, for that matter.
  3. Awesome.

I just added a bunch to the favorites folder, focusing on variety. A little something for everyone, hopefully.
  4. Much more readable, thanks Zamuel.
  5. This is a cool idea. As a purely practical manner, I can see it being more useful for AE than regular gameplay, since even once your character has attained "cosmic level" power you still get handed FedEx and minor thug missions.

    Brutes on paper

The ability to finally use the CoV ATs as hero ATs is going to make me play this game forever.

The CoV AT that sticks out the most for my playstyle is Brutes.
(as you can see from my other posts...being able to use super strength with a high damaging AT is the biggest draw)

My question is this...are Brutes as fun to play as the look on paper?
On paper they look like beasts...Scrapper level survivability (actually more survivability than scraps) and potentially more damage. That seems nasty.

    Is it really that "fun"?
Once Going Rogue comes out...if the Brute and the Scrapper have the same powersets...what would make you be a Scrapper?
I understand that Scrappers have higher damage from the start...but from what I have read it's not that hard to keep your Fury bar up to scrapper level damage.
My Electric/Electric Brute was so ridiculously fun to play that I didn't mind the directed story-on-rails aspect of CoV and he roared up to 50 so fast it made my head spin. Almost totally solo except for events and the rare pick-up team, he is just a blast to play. He's still the only 50 of my 4 that I wish I could still level.

    The Alt Alphabet

Here's a comic book cover I made that I'd totally forgotten about until stumbling on it just now:

  10. I don't know what the numbers are, but I play on every server and Virtue definitely sees a lot more events than any other server I've been on lately. I don't think I've been on Freedom in the past few weeks, though.
  11. Apparently Bane and Killer Croc have different backstories now. Well, the versions of the characters I was referencing were both Science origin; I'm going to ignore other versions.

It's kind of like the shake-up of the X-Men where some new writer changed a bunch of them from Mutation to Magic origin. I find it best just to ignore that sort of thing. (Spider-man has never and will never have organic webshooters, either, so there.)
  12. An exit wound and bullet hole seem to be two different things to me. I'm a terrible, terrible artist, but here are a couple rough takes on each:

    Bullet hole

    Exit wound
  13. My first 50 was an Energy/Energy Blaster, the android Photon X. I got him to 50 in early March of 2005, in a desire to make a Kheldian.

My second 50 was another Blaster, a Fire/Fire/Fire human/demon hybrid named Monster Child. Getting him to 50 just seemed to happen because I enjoyed playing him so much. One of the main reasons he's so enjoyable to play is because he switches between his human teenager form and demon form with a costume change. I made the most of the body sliders to change his size; as a result the demon looks nearly twice the size of the human.

My third 50 was my android Electric/Electric Brute, Future Shock. He was so fun to play that I hardly realized I was about to hit the level cap until he was suddenly 47. This was my fastest trip to 50.

My fourth 50 was yet another Blaster (coincidentally), and AR/Dev named Tommi Gunn. One of my original characters from the early days of CoH, she was a total slog until she got Full Auto, then it was full speed ahead to 50. Full Auto remains one of my all-time favorite L32 powers.

I expect my next 50 will be my Invincible/Super Strength Tanker Minotaurus, since he's 47.5 currently, followed closely by my MA/regen Scrapper and namesake, Ironik.

I get what you're saying though. All in all, the specific Origins of characters are not that important to playing them in the game (fun to discuss though) so it wouldn't bother me if someone used either explaination for their toon's origin. A Magic robot character? Possible, might be a person's soul trapped in it, or brought to life Pinocchio style.

I'll be honest though, when I think of Mutants in-game, it's probably the origin that gives me the most vague mental image. I've a invul/super strength Tank who is Mutation because she was born that way from two differently powered individuals (I've not worked out what their origins are) which fits with the whole X-Men idea. I've also an Emp/Sonic Def whom I rationalise as Natural because he is simply a man with some inspiring words that can inspire people to keep on fighting and frighten his enemies.

to make a Mutation Origin booster pack though, I think it'd be better to ignore the possibility that pretty much any power-set and look would fit, and instead focus on those who are physically different from humans in some way. Otherwise I've no idea how they'd choose costume pieces. I personally don't have much need for a bunch of anthropomorphic animal costume pieces at the moment, but I think it would fit the theme well and be something that a lot of people have asked for.
I always enjoy a good discussion that tries to parse the boundaries of something.

In the comic book world, the Mutation origin is pretty much defined by Marvel's X-Men. Offhand I can't even think of a character from other superhero universes that were referred to as mutations independent of Marvel's take on it.

For me the delineation between Mutation, Natural and Science comes down to specific thresholds. "Natural" is the baseline, normative human genome, with the slight variations we see in our world. "Mutation" is a change from that norm in utero. That part is key for me: Changes to your genes that depart from the usual before you're born. "Science" is a change to your body that happens after you were born brought about by some sort of man-made intervention. ("Man-made" as a stand-in for any directed technological procedure, whether the tech comes from ancient astronauts or alien invaders.) Whether that intervention is medical or chemical in nature is irrelevant.

Also irrelevant are the results. Throwing fire is the ability; how you achieved it is the Origin. (Of course it makes no sense that one can mutate into a human flame-thrower, but we'll gloss over that part of it. )

So NPCs like Trolls and Infected are Science because they were born Natural but later became mutated. To reiterate, "Mutant" is a change that occurs while still a fetus, while "Science" is a change that occurs after being born. It's sometimes confusing because we use the same term -- mutate -- to describe both events. So I think delineating between being born with it or having it done to you afterwards is important.

    Some examples of Science characters:

    Animal Man
    Bane
    Beast Boy
    Captain America
    Captain Atom
    Doctor Manhattan
    Luke Cage (Power Man)
    The Fantastic Four
    The Flash
    The Hulk
    Killer Croc
    The Lizard
    Spider-Man
    Synapse

As for a Mutation booster pack, I don't know what sort of power would be defined by it, since comic book mutants have as much variety as any.

    Character Bios

I don't know what my percentage is, but it's a lot. I've maxed out every server with characters, so somewhere north of 135 bios.
  16. I think all the events should be used sparingly. I was hoping the Winter Event would be in full swing by now, but it looks like the preview is the only taste I'll get this year, what with my travel schedule.

I'd like to see the Rikti, Zombie and Banner events simply turned off for at least 6-8 months, with perhaps a new event in the spring after the Valentine's Day one.

Yeah, PvP sucks. I never stay around when I'm hit, because you never know if there are 3 other Stalkers just waiting to hit you.

When I want PvP I fire up a game that is designed for it and is balanced with it in mind, which means an FPS: Call of Duty 1 or 2, Quake Live, etc.
  18. I'm behind this, 100%. Smaller events with individual zone focus, like the Troll rave in Skyway. With even more superhero flavor.

One of the problems with events now is that they're becoming old hat. Most servers ignore them. Last night Croatoa in Virtue was cleared by the Deadly Apocalypse, bringing my street hunting to a halt. Since no one was interested in combating it, I just switched to a different character. I think the bigger events should be turned off for a while to make them more special.

Do want more in-game big events. Sucks that I missed out on all the goodness like this.
Unfortunately they spawned above the zone ceiling, so you could never actually get close to them. Still, it was an epic sight.

and here is the more modern superhero version. I used stealth without all the small lines and an eye piece I've never seen before called sonic seeing.

thinking about starting out with the modern version and making the first one an alt costume.

now comes the hardest part..the name :P
edit: a lil bit a of bio would be nice as well.

Jason Alexander was a sem-normal college student, the semi comes from an unique innate talent he had. Jason had the ability to turn invisible. It was something he didn't use very often. He always knew that he could become a hero, but he lived in paragon city, they didn't need him. He was attending a local college and doing well in school. He was broke like most college student but he didn't really care, life was good. That changed one day when Jason was on his way home from a class. His cellphone rang and when he answered he got the worst news of his life.

Jasons parents had been killed by the well known villain group known as Arachnos, according to the police his parents were at the bank when Arachnos attempted to rob it, Jason's parents were caught in the crossfire and killed. He took the news VERY personally and wanted to take down the group that killed his parents. But he didn't know how, he lived in a city of heroes but didn't know how he could be one. Jason began with the basic, combat training. Spurred on by the though of avengin his parents deaths he quickly moved to the top of the class. His instructor noticed that he had a particular knack for daggers and sent him to a more advanced teacher, along with this he began using his power more frequently. one year later Jason had full mastery over his invisiblity and daggers. After a year of training he was ready to join the fight as <blank :P >

I'll probably end up throwing some tragic in there to make sure he doesn't focus ONLY on revenge (kinda like Peter Parker and uncle Ben, going down the wrong path until something tragic happens to turn him around.)
Why don't you make him emo who despises his parents... until they get killed in the bank robbery, which sets him on the road to heroism.

Here's the costume I came up with:

Seems like it happens a lot at random, and some foes which are knocked up at even con get knocked back when they're one or two levels below you. I just tried out my axe Tank and dinged while street sweeping, and suddenly the Lost I was fighting started getting randomly knocked back.

I'd like to see more positive ideas like this rather than negative ones. I get kind of tired hearing "no no no no" all the time.

I recall a similar discussion a few years ago about adding costumes and I asked, with complete ignorance that I acknowledged at the time, why we couldn't have costume "shells" that layered on top of the character's frame. Perhaps it's serendipity as the things may have already been in the pipeline, but about a year after I asked that we got coats, jackets and vests of all kinds added to the game which work like shells layered atop the existing costumes.

So maybe there is some way to do size-changing that doesn't involve massive amounts of work. After all, when someone throws Tenebrous Tentacles on a GM, those tentacles are likewise giant. So it seems like there's *some* sort of size check the game does. As far as the "giants being indoors" thing, I'm sure there must be some check the game can do to see where you are and gray out that power if the location is inappropriate.

We were told that re-coloring powers was impossible because they were "baked in" to the game engine, yet a way was found to do that. If there's one thing the Devs have impressed me with over the years, it's their sheer inventiveness. Just getting people thinking about this may present a solution that is relatively easy to implement.
