Woot! Happy birthday!
Ummm, try not to be disturbed by the pictures in your thread. Heh. -
Quote:You're sidestepping all my questions! It did come up once during a TF, yes. I explained that I was part of a team of other players who were counting on my participation, and she didn't really get that you can't just press pause on an MMO the way you can on a Nintendo game.
I'd say that's unreasonable entirely, unless you said you would be done at a certain time and then jumped on a TF that would take longer than that.
I dunno. Sometimes relationships just don't work out when someone can't understand the other person's hobbies. People can get upset over someone's hobby, no matter what it is. Games aren't the only case. It sounds like you ran into someone that wasn't willing to work with your interest no matter what.
At least I'm assuming you were reasonable on your side and weren't gaming 24/7. -
Quote:I'm playing a Dual Pistols/Energy Blaster at the same time as an Energy/Energy Blaster. I have an E^3 Blaster, and AR/EM, and an Arch/Dev, all at 50. For the weapon users, I don't notice the redraw much as I follow what I said above: use things in chains. Redraw is all of a second and not that big a deal. I'll love it when BAB finds a way to get rid of it (I was under the impression he thought he found a solution, but then found some way that it did not work).Because you are willing to ignore it doesn't mean it's not an issue. Just play Dual Pistols after playing Fire or Elec.
Still, it doesn't make or break a character. If it did, there wouldn't be Scrapper champions running around with Broadsword/Regens, which I guarantee you has to redraw more than any Blaster really does.
Quote:Archery recently had its animation times decreased a lot to bring it up to par. Assault Rifle has a lot of advantages DP doesn't. One obvious thing is both of these sets have a nuke that can be launched at longer range.
HoB received a complete unheard of buff when it gives you a defense buff during its animation, mostly to address people talking about the disadvantage of having to go into combat with it. You can argue for more damage being needed there, but I think the disadvantage of getting up close is gone. I do wish my other Blaster nukes that get used up close had the same buff.
Quote:But yes, redraw is an issue for these sets as well. They just aren't as... bad as DP in addition to having redraw. At least not anymore.
Quote:You are really equating Fire and DP because Fire has a 2.67 animation attack in it?
Quote:I don't really count the ability to purchase another crappy attack with a long animation an advantage.
Umbral's suggestion in another thread (don't think I'm misquoting you, Umbral) was to up the damage/endurance/recharge to help it out. Probably the best route to take with this.
Quote:No, you can do decent comparisons. The scrapper board has been doing it for years; figure the DPA of attacks, string together chains, compare AoE options, and look at utility. It's how MA got fixed as well as a variety of melee sets. I don't have my spreadsheets here, and I don't have blaster data loaded into any DPA spreadsheets but if I get a chance I'll start working on them and we can have a look.
Quote:Um, no. I am saying that claiming redraw is fine because you can accept less versatility in your secondary to minimize it isn't a good argument that it's not a factor in game play.
It really shouldn't and doesn't have a huge impact on performance, however. Otherwise Werner and other lovers of Broadsword couldn't do the insane stuff they do on their Scrappers. Blasters have to deal with redraw even less than they do.
Quote:I believe I said devices was about the only set where redraw is not an issue. " I think devices is the only set where you could begin to say redraw isn't problematic"
Even, it is still a bit problematic if you need to immobilize enemies that are trying to close to melee range.
I would love to have a redraw workaround, though. I don't think it's nice having to redraw to use your secondary at all, but that's how the game works now. It'd be nice to shoot a webnade from your bow or assault rifle, but I think that would take more behind the scenes work than they'd allow for the problem.
Quote:DP/EM vs Any Non Weapon Primary/EM
BU->Redraw->Weapon fire
Boost range, power boost, conserve power all incur the weapon redraw penaly.
The case with any other secondary.
Using the ranged immobs, any of the attacks or utility powers incur the redraw penalty.
Subdual, Chillblain, Electric Fence, Ring of fire, burn, shiver, ice sword etc all incur the penalty
Just about everything in the Ancillary or Patron pools also incurs the redraw penalty.
In the example used of having enemies close to within melee range, as long as you have only one the redraw is not an issue, the second there is more than one , you have to deal with redraw to use your primary.
Until then, there are ways to avoid it and live with it. If they're not enough, people are better off avoiding them. *shrugs* I don't like that, but that's the way it is. In the meantime, I'll try to remind people that redraw isn't THAT long, and that a Blaster can certainly try to chain things so they don't have to worry about it too much. -
Quote:QFT. Pretty much says what I think. Blasters can solo well, and add a lot to teams. I'll take ranged damage over melee damage any day... if I was a min/maxxer. As it is, I like all ATs just fine on my teams.First, let's get accurate when describing this. Blasters are not "broken" because broken things don't work. Your car breaks down, it doesn't work. Your refrigerator breaks, it doesn't work. Blasters? I make one, I play it, I see mobs die, I get experience, I level up, I hit 50. That sure doesn't seem broken to me.
It took pages of discussion to finally get to why some people think blasters are "broken". They set their difficulty to +2 or +3 mobs for an 8-man team, and can't run a mission solo. That's very different from being "broken". For one thing, when you're solo, you don't have to set your difficulty that high. You're basically saying "if I set the difficulty higher than what my character can handle, I do badly". Well, don't set it that high. You're solo. You have that option. If you're on a team, it doesn't matter what the difficulty is because you have other characters grabbing aggro and debuffing mobs and buffing you up. If tanks and scrappers are able to solo the highest-difficulty content meant for the largest teams, then it doesn't mean that it's the standard for all characters. It more likely means that the game is "broken" because some archetypes are too powerful to have any significant challenge regardless of difficulty level.
I'm comfortable playing my blaster with +1 or +2 content set for three or four players (with bosses). It offers a good challenge and while still letting me actually run the missions. If other characters like scrappers and tanks can run through more difficult content just by mashing attack buttons, well, good for them. It's not a playstyle I find particularly engaging. I happen to enjoy that I use strategy for my battles.
And also, I fully disagree that blasters don't bring much to a team. On every team I've been on, blasters bring lots and lots of damage, which ultimately is what completes the missions.
Every character is going to be different, too. Some can handle more than others, and the definition of being able to solo for the devs is still the default that we get with a new character, or when you're set at +0/x0. If you're doing more than that, great. If you can't do more than that, you're not necessarily broken, though you can argue if such a character is too team-oriented. -
Only thing I'd dislike with a blade secondary is how horribly it would match with a blast set, especially if it's a weapon blast. *shudders* WAY too much redraw for me.
I figure a Kinetic melee type secondary or Martial Arts is more likely, since you have no redraw problems, existing powers to work with, etc. Not too shabby.
And... with some people honestly wondering what a Blaster brings to a team in another thread (not sure why... ranged ST and AOE is going to trump melee range any day, unless the damage scales are way off), I doubt melee ATs are going to complain much about Blasters. And as Strato pointed out, we can punch stuff a lot already. -
Yeah, no real need to get annoyed on an internet forum. I know some people live for the drama, but meh. I'd rather have a good discussion without people getting overly involved.
Anyway, I don't really find myself in need of much for my Stalker, other than maybe enhancing/perfecting the changes that were made a few issues back. I think Stalkers probably should have their HP cap nudged up by the same amount that their base was increased, so the AT can have the same benefit other ATs do from powers/bonuses that increase HP. The increased crit rate from teammates just needs a greater range, to my mind. That ability to crit well and often is an advantage of a Stalker over a Scrapper or Brute, so I'd like it to work well.
Maybe there's room for some base damage increase there as well, but I don't know that it's needed. My Nin Stalker takes out things just about as well as my Katana Scrapper. Some other flavor thing would work for me, but not cal trops for all (if that's even being thought about anymore, heh). -
I take it mob by mob, and depending on the team. AS is pretty nice for mitigating an alpha for a team, and also can help eliminate some nasty targets in a mob fast, and better than using some other attacks. I also try to run into mobs ahead of the team so I can make the choice as well. Pretty much all the melee ATs benefit from getting into a mob fast, so I have that tendency with all my characters.

Wish I could make it this time around, but my night class is on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Hoping I might be able to do Tanker Tuesdays again next semester. I actually had someone PM me about Tanker Tuesdays on Victory a month back, so I hope they show up.
Join in if you can- Tanks rock. -
Well... it depends. How much do you game? If you're playing every day, and most of the hours when you're not working/going to school, you have a bit of a problem, I would say. I love writing, reading, photography, and video games, but I'm not going to spend all my free time with those things, either. My wife would rightly get upset, and even if I wasn't married, I'd be a little obsessed.
Now, if you only play a few days out of the week for a couple hours or something, that's not unreasonable for a hobby. Depending on what it is, your decision might have been right. Any hobby is fine, done in moderation. Well... depends on the hobby. I need to remember what forumites I'm talking to. But playing video games for a hobby is not a bad hobby, and cheaper than many hobbies you can have. So if she was begrudging you playing games at all, I would say that is an issue. -
Just keep running with your Isos character. You can catch up when you can, as you will automatically get SK'd up to your team leader (running a TF another time during the week is always a good way to do so).
Got Odinn to 27 myself, and even have a story arc ready to go in case my team wants it. Crazy! -
Quote:That... certainly makes it amusing. As opposed to creepy. Hehe.Having just watched Spaceballs over the weekend, I now picture Voo like the scene with Lord Helmet and his action figures.
I pretty much only keep track of things with my Mid's Builds. I make a "wishbuild" for the goal end for each toon, and then have a separate build for each that is their "ongoing" build as they level up. Pretty much all I need, and not all that anal retentive to my mind... not sure how else I could make a good overall build without it. At least without making too many or too few purchases, etc.
Now that markets are merged, I only have one crafter, GP. He's been slowly working on all those badges anyway, and my villain that did a bit of crafting was way behind. No need to duplicate, especially with the e-mail system.
I usually try to keep track of players with the rating system, as I haven't had any issues with those being saved (doesn't always like to display like I tell it to). I don't really bother with it more than starring people I know, other than the few bad players I have encountered and decided to avoid like the plague (one was a Tanker with all the power pool picks he could get, didn't run his toggles or try to tank, etc.). -
Not sure what confused you. I mentioned most of Devices are toggles, so they're "fire and forget." The rest are best used before combat, as Trip Mines, Gun Drone, Smoke Grenade, etc., are a bit hard to set up mid combat. Even Cal trops is going to help more before combat. So you shouldn't have many redraw problems... especially if it bugs you.
And really, other sets are going to work better in a chain anyway, as I mentioned with Energy Melee. Especially (again) if you don't like redraw. -
Usually in the +1-2/x3-4 range. I can handle more, but I usually am more keen on clearing missions than defeating tons of mobs to do so. Probably don't get to that until I get more attacks on my guys... don't know if I'd want that on my Fire/Fire before 35, for instance.
-
If dev choices were still getting handed out periodically, I think that a contest would go over better. I know GR was coming out, but with the size of the dev staff, it seemed like it would be possible to keep handing out dev choices monthly or even bi-monthly.
I actually had an idea for a story similar to this, so I might try it. Kind of hard to find time for AE around my own writing, though. -
Quote:Hehe. Funny. I was a bit surprised by him coming out of stealth, but he shot at me. My Dual Pistols blaster and he had a nice shootout. Most fun I had in Praetoria is when Maelstrom Sparta-kicked me off of Neuron's Tower from full stealth when I wasn't expecting it.
Quote:Better; fix Devices to make it roughly balanced with other secondaries as it's the closest thematically. This means adding a +dam effect that gives Devices equivalent DPM to a secondary with Build Up. In addition, as a Quality of Life change, adjust Time Bomb to be more like Omega Maneuver to prevent redundancy with Trip Mine and increase survivability. -
If you don't like redraw, just mind when you would use the powers. Most of devices powers, for instance, are fire and forget or used before combat, minimizing redraw in combat. Even with Energy Melee, only use or switch to your melee attacks when you have a last mob or two up close to deal with. This means you don't have to redraw until you get to the next mob.
Really, redraw shouldn't be that big a deal on a Blaster... it's a much bigger deal on a Scrapper with a weapon set paired with Regen, when you probably will need to use your secondary more in combat, interspersed with your attacks. -
Quote:Eh, people rag on ST damage like you don't really need it, when there are times you do need it. Whenever I'm on an AOE focused character (my Huntsman, for one), I find myself wishing for more ST damage. It's a perception issue. And if mobs are constantly dying before you can get to them, so what? Means your team either needs to up the difficulty, or you're having fun steamrolling. Enjoy the ride. I was on a Blaster heavy Synapse this weekend, and things were dying before I could target and fire sometimes. I was commenting on how great the team was.Last I checked, BillZ's isn't the authority on set viability here and it doesn't change the fact that Energy Melee *is* played and *is* a popular set for Tankers despite any ill opinion the set may have on these boards.
If the problem is perception, then why perpetuate it? Stalker's aren't single target focused just because they rid one AoE for a strong ST burst. In fact, the way Stalkers can potentize any damaging attacks make having one less AoE not much of a detriment. And what do you think the devs will do when they proliferate Ice melee? Or Fire melee? Or Axe/Warmace? Do you honestly believe they'll remove *all* AoE attacks from those sets? And do you honestly weigh the whirling attacks so heavily vs team performance? Whirling attacks that are really no better than the infamous Whirling Hands?
It's extremely irritating, bordering on hypocritical, every time I hear the complaint. The excessive whining about mobs dying before you can get to them, how useless they are in teams but whipping out a moderate-to-low short-ranged PBAoE is suppose to change that? For any melee!?
And yes, for regular mobs, AOE damage is quite nice, but that's how the game is set up. Until the devs come up with some different way of setting up the game in that regard, people may keep having the wrong perception (if all I needed was AOEs, my Blasters wouldn't use their ST attacks so often).
For an added tweak to Stalkers, I don't think Cal Trops as an inherent is going to do it. The debuff from a successful Assassin's Strike is a lot more useful, and making that more of a guarantee would probably be a better buff. Or tweaking their damage amounts, etc.
I don't really see Cal Trops changing people's minds, either. It's not that amazing of a power (though it is quite useful... I have it on my Dev Blaster and my Nin/Nin Stalker). How is a slow/fear patch that does minor DoT going to make people want Stalkers?
The changes some issues back were much better and more significant, and people still don't get the value of having more crits, controlling crits, and debuffs from AS (even though I notice when that debuff has landed/worn off). If people ignore those, they're going to ignore Cal Trops. -
Hmmmm, been looking into reading Pratchett. Guess I should check out Discworld first... any recommendations?
-
Yes, this change is pretty awesome. I still can't believe they're giving us inherent Fitness... at best, I was thinking increased endurance from 1-20, like Beginner's Luck does for accuracy now.
-
Hmmm, a few films that are usually thought of as required viewing and have been in a lot of the film classes I have seen (and/or attended).
-Rashomon
-Yojimbo
-On the Waterfront (pretty much the start of how movie acting works now)
-Casablanca (almost every line in this is a quote in the mainstream!)
-The Third Man (well-written film by Graham Greene, well-directed, and with a great performance from Orson Welles)
-Citizen Kane
-Rear Window (my favorite Hitchcock, as well)
-Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
-Hero (arguably a finer film than Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon... especially from a cinematography standpoint, which might give you more to talk about)
-Princess Bride (hilarious, but also well done characterization and writing)
-A River Runs Through It (beautiful film and uses some of the fantastic writing from the book)
-Whale Rider (more recent but might not have been noticed by your students, a great film, well shot, well told, etc.) -
Quote:You're not the first to suggest it, though as plenty of people have pointed out, you are getting four extra slots with this power (each power in fitness), access to powers more quickly as you're leveling up, etc. It might happen, mind, but I still think "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" whenever people suggest it.Would it be too much to ask for a few extra slots? o_O Even if Fitness is now free, we still have to dedicate slots onto it to make it work, so any new powers we pick will basically be barebones if we don't want to change our builds too much...
Besides the above, inherent Fitness is a buff in and of itself, and we also have a new Incarnate system offering even more ways for players to buff themselves at level 50. I'm skeptical that the devs would give us anything more, though I'll hardly scoff at more slots, either. I'm still surprised that we're getting inherent Fitness... I thought an increase endurance recovery that is similar to Beginner's Luck (increased accuracy for the first 20 levels) was the most likely thing.
So sometimes the devs can be quite generous... though after some of the strange reactions to the buff of inherent Fitness, I don't know if I'd want to give us players anything ever again. -
Rework my listing of two Doms to two Corrs. Get those two mixed around sometimes, even though they are very different ATs.
Anyway, I had a Blaster heavy Manticore run with coz last Monday as well... and that was also spectacularly successful. I like that this game let's you run with so many different combos and succeed. Makes for a different experience that can be fun, even with all the repetitive missions in Synapse. -
Really? I've only had two Tsoo... ever. That I can think of, anyway. Just did that mission on my Praetorian Brute and only got two.
-
I've only deleted a few characters that I genuinely did not enjoy playing. It takes awhile to get to that point, too, as there are a few toons I have that are kind of fun, but I have to be in the right mood. The few I have deleted I realized I was never going to like.
Rerolled my Stone/SS as a Shield/SS Tank and don't regret that at all. Hate how I can't move well with Stone. Same thing for my Thugs/Pain MM. He was my second MM and I realized after him that I just don't like the MM playstyle. I deleted him so I'd have room for a Dual Pistols Blaster instead. I've basically deleted my En/Psi Blaster, as I just like En/En more... though I did shift that guy to another server. Pretty much how I treat most of my "fun, but can't have him taking up space on my home server" characters. Only my favorites stay there, and a few alts that I'm working on. -
Well, Maximum Overkill had an overkill team to run with. Think there were 2 Doms, a Controller, a WS and four Blasters... we didn't stealth anything and got done in in 1:53, with many multiple level ups from teammates. Maximum himself got 12 bars, I believe, and he's in the mid 30s.
*added*
Yup, thanks for joining, Chant! It was a fun and interesting run.
