Quote:Let me start by saying that Fitness seemed like too much of a buff to me: I would have been happy with just getting an end recovery mechanism for the first 20 levels like Beginner's Luck. I'm not going to argue against getting it, though. It says that I like a challenge and either fitting Stamina into a build or designing a character without adds to the challenge. It also adds to the uniqueness of each individual build. I'm not saying that something shouldn't be done, but I think you could accomplish essentially the same thing by giving an inherent power that slightly boosts recovery. Then you can get to the level of endurance/recovery you need by:
1) Getting stamina
2) Choosing a power set with a +rec power
3) Utilizing IO builds
With this change it takes the +rec powers and diminishes their importance. As an example, it's relatively straight forward to have a stamina-less /Regen scrapper. In fact, it's one of the benefits of that set. Inherent Stamina makes that set slightly less appealing. The same is true for Rad/ or /Rad, Elec Control, Kinetics, Cold, etc. that have +rec or endurance "healing" powers against which you could have Stamina-less builds.
It seems we also have people who want an easy button. I'm not one of them.
I think calling inherent Stamina an easy button is overdoing it, however, and saying Inherent Stamina takes something from powers that buff recovery is a bit much as well. My Willpower and Regen characters don't get Stamina right now, but there are plenty of people that don't want to go without Stamina on those types of builds as it is.
Challenge is entirely subjective as well. You'll have a new baseline of performance to run with now, and you can find new things to challenge yourself with: after Inherent Fitness, I would say fitting in three more powers without more slots is a decent challenge for builds. And of course, you can always up the difficulty of your missions or go for other challenges in the fighting arena. -
I like Fly just for being iconic and easy to use, though I do wish it had a higher speed cap... it's trivially easy to get to and... 58 MPH, I think it is? is not that fast. Fly and Hover are much better than they used to be, but this still bugs me.
Even so, I have Fly on a lot of characters, even a couple of Tanks and such, even though I mainly have it on squishier characters. I'd say Fly comes in second behind Super Jump for me. I like leaping about with it and/or Combat Jumping on Blasters, Tanks, Scrappers, and Stalkers. See plenty of people flying about, too, so perhaps it's just anecdotal? -
Quote:I know I should probably avoid them. I've been avoiding it most days this week with all the grading I have to do. But then I see it and read some posts, and it's like someone is kicking a puppy... and I just... can't... stay... away! Those threads pop up from time to time. I usually don't bother with them at all unless someone says something interesting or different. You'll notice I haven't posted in that thread.
Quote:I'm a pretty new player here, but from what I can see, there's only one AT that's in danger of going "obsolete", and that would be the blaster.
Yay, you get 2 attack sets! Does anyone ever need TWO? Sure, I suppose I can see the attraction of having high dps as the primary, and something like energy as backup so you can use the kickback in clever ways but... really? No defenses, no resists, no buffs, nothing - and all to get two attack sets you don't need? You don't even end up with higher dps than other ATs. The one advantage a blaster gets is being able to fire despite mezzes; that's a real small advantage.
These guys could use an overhaul of some kind.
And you say 2 attack sets like it's a bad thing. You can destroy stuff from afar with your primary, and when they come close, you can drop things quite quickly with 1-2 fast melee strikes (especially if you have a /EM, /Elec, or /Fire).
Blasters were great after the Defiance buffs and even without IOs. With them, I build all my Blasters with about 30% defense (the type depends on the powersets), and they're able to lots of fun stuff solo, and especially teamed.
Yes, only the first twenty. *sighs* You and that attitude are that "kicking the puppy" feeling I mentioned earlier. 1-50 should be a blast for any Blaster, not just for the first 20.
And heck... my Dual Pistols Blaster has been even more fun in his 20s than he was in Praetoria: and I was having a lot of fun there. Oh yes, fun is unquantifiable and bad to mention. Okay, he defeats things with even more ease than he did before, thanks to more powers and slots. -
Do you have the Fighting Pool with your Regen? Regen is really powerful with all its heals and regeneration, but all that power is not instantaneous: you need time to click your attacks, etc. I noticed a big difference for my guy when I picked up Tough, and when he got Weave and a decent amount of defense (from IOs), he usually doesn't need to have Tough on unless I have the difficulty way up or my team is facing something rough.
Regeneration is usually considered a higher skill secondary by a lot of people, as it isn't a fire and forget secondary like Willpower: you have to know when to use what powers, etc. I'm guessing Regen also hurts a bit from Stalker's lower HP cap (when our base was increased, the cap was not also increased). It should be easy to be at or close to the cap before using Dull Pain, and increasing your HP is a big boost from Regen, or it should be. -
How do crits display in the combat log? I haven't really bothered to look and see if it says more than "you did double damage!" or whatever with a critical, or if it also adds what your chance for a critical was, kind of like your chance to hit rolls. Might be kind of helpful if it did say this, as Stalkers are supposed to have certain chances at times, and Scrapper criticals change depending on the target as well.

Quote:That soon? Hmmm, I thought it was longer. Guess I'm thinking of Lightning Rod at 32. I made the mistake of shifting my Shield/SS to Champion to have a 50 for Tanker Tuesdays, but I'm rarely able to make those, and I haven't played him much lately.Shield Charge at 26 on a Tanker.
Very nice if one is level-locking in the early 30s for rolling recipes, because you can still six-slot it (or 5-slot it if you stop exactly at 30). Not that I've looked at doing that or anything.

Quote:Penny, what have I told you about stirring hornet's nests? Sheesh! As I recall, there were numerous threads on such&such AT becoming obsolete after GR came out. Just curious, but from my limited view on Victory, I am seeing pretty much every AT in mixed teams. I always thought people will play what they want to play. Tankers will tank, brutes will be brutish, defenders defend those dastardly corruptors, and so forth.
Anyone else seeing this or are some of the predictions coming true? Too early?
I need to save this and break it out in the threads that sprout up out ad nauseum. Exactly what I think... and it's to the point where I'm getting bored and depressed with any such thread. That one on the Blaster forums (being in part continued here) is one of them. -

Quote:Well, I notice a big difference when my defense gets buffed to about 20-30% (from whomever), and I'm aiming for 30% defense to S/L, among other things. Energize's effects won't quite be perma, but 49.8 seconds of recharge on that will help. Having Lightning Rod to mitigate and do damage every 40 seconds will be nice as well.Electric armor? No, you really won't get much tougher outside of team buffing.
Yes, that includes heavy IO bonus sets
My main problem when playing him is I run around like he's fully slotted up. Not sure why, but I have been playing 50s a lot lately. Oh well. I know he's not going to be as tough as others (even GP with Fiery Aura's lower resists can outdo his S/L resists by about 13-14%, which is big), but he'll be a lot tougher than he is now.
Quote:My Brute is close to 31 now. Most of the team wasn't 30 when we hit Croatoa so we couldn't run the Nemmers arc alongside GP. When he left we resorted to running a level 45 arc provided by DC.
I'm going to miss next week but in the future I'll try to have some arcs or at least contacts lined up.
I hope the badges and XP made it worthwhile.
I'll go drown my miseries in more paper grading. Heh. -

They have tried to fix redraw, but there are no fast and easy solutions, unfortunately. I don't know if it's quite on the level of powerset customization, but it would take a good amount of work (last I heard on it was a BAB post saying he thought he found something to make powers ignore redraw... or something to that effect, but then it didn't work all the time). Your idea would be a change to the game engine, more coding, and I'm not sure if it would even be the easiest to implement. I would be surprised if BAB or someone did not have an idea of what needed to be done, but there isn't time to do it (compared to other things players very much need and want).

Quote:Ha, now that was totally worth coming back to this thread for. Though I'm also a little disturbed now...On the next exciting episode of Why a Blaster:
Arbegla, who has recovered from his amnesia to discover that he is, in fact, a capybara, must confront his twin over the inheritance to the McDuesh fortune, but how will he handle it when he learns Stratonexus' baby isn't his? Meanwhile, Thinkso interrupts Grey Pilgrim's and Another_Fan's wedding wearing nothing more than a cravat and three ounces of Worchestershire sauce. But is the bride actually in love with the condiment-smeared madman?
Stay tuned for the next page of Why A Blaster, only on CoH Forums.
Meh, it shook my depression from all the down on Blaster talk in this thread, and the down on inherent Fitness talk in other threads. For that, I thank you.
I probably won't be able to respond again for awhile due to my busy work schedule, but Another Fan, that post is only an unfair comparison if Blaster ranges are way far off of other ATs. I've argued plenty before that they are within acceptable ranges of performance (for a lot of players and the devs, even if certain min/maxxing of other ATs can also make for some strong damage output). At that point, people are taking what AT they prefer and running with it.
Some people prefer Scrappers over Brutes and vice versa. It's more of a feel thing than a real performance change. If I'm in the mood for Blasting, I couldn't grab a Corruptor, let alone an MM. They all play different and offer different benefits, as well as different routes to fun. -
Hey, at least they remembered me. That's a plus, in my book. Might be biased though.
To the OP, I really do like Tanks. I have Scrappers, Blasters, Stalkers, a Controller, and a Brute that I all like, but Tanks are certainly my first love. If you like having decent mitigation via Tanks and decent offense, pairing something with Shield is also fun. It's quite different from Fiery Aura, but my Shield/SS is probably my next favorite tank behind Fire/Fire. You have to wait until 38 to get AOE via Footstomp (well, Shield Charge at 32, silly me). Those two combined with Rage will just decimate things in AOE, and your ST will get the rest.
I do like Mace for its combination of AOE and ST as well, if that's something you like. Might work nice with Shield as well. -
Yes... the use of "build problem" is quite strange. I can hear that for trying to fit more powers in, or more bonuses, or something like that. But having build problems for low level characters due to inherent Fitness? No. They are four powers that your low level character does not have to pick, nor even slot if you do not want. That's not a build problem, that's an inherent power ability, and is a buff compared to what we have now. Calling it a build problem is blatant misuse of what those words mean.
I could possibly accept the argument of people not wanting to jump faster or slower, but... they'll get used to it. You move different in other games, you'll get used to how you move here. It's not like we're talking inherent speed boost here, either.
I pretty much am making no new characters until I19, even though I have a few ideas I'd like to make. I still have one Praetorian pre-20, and I love the content, but not having Stamina does make him more of a pain. I figured I should just skip that feeling and wait on making any new characters.
All these anti new Fitness posts are really depressing. I actually was wondering if the Devs had goofed and it was too much of a boost when we first heard about it. -
I have to think Weave would help you out more. Even with capped resists to S/L, there are plenty of damage types out there that are going to hurt, and having those attacks miss you more via Weave will definitely help.
-
Good, great, yes! More costume and animation stuff coming with issues. I've come to accept that we need some costume packs and such, but I only feel okay with that when I see good things coming with the issues as well. I'll be keen on seeing how this looks on my characters!
-
Quote:Wow. You have singlehandedly confirmed in one post all the things my heart has been telling me about the inherent darkness obfuscated vision humans possess. I am thoroughly depressed, thanks. So first the Devs tell the players that they must have the Fitness power pool on all of their characters whether they want them or not. Now they ban certain Temp Powers from the CoP Trial. I sure miss the days where I, the player, had the ability to make the choice of what powers my characters could have and where and when I could use them.
Nothing says "fun" like having your freedom of choice taken away from you. -
Between Lightning Rod and Thunderstrike, I don't know if Air Superiority is all that needed. Lot of knockdown there already. I do like Air Superiority on characters when I've taken it, but I really avoid it on powersets that already use that Haymaker animation. Really hope Castle and BAB notice how much that animation is used and that's one of the first to get some new options in the sets in which it appears.
Jacob's Ladder is a nice cone for damage, but it is a melee cone. Brutes and Tanks should have no issues getting enough mobs around them to hit a bunch of people with it, but you do have to reposition a touch to use it still. I don't mind that after playing Katana, Ninja Blade, and Dark Melee so much, but I know it bugs some people. I would recommend keeping it, though. I don't have Lightning Rod yet, but my Brute feels pretty strong in the AOE department with just Jacob's Ladder, Thunderstrike, and Chain Induction. -
Came in as everyone was leaving the base, but I had a story arc up and Lanna passed me the star to start it (I thought Lanna was just going to choose it, but apparently having a story arc=promotion? Heh). Anyway, my team finished up "The Scroll of Tielekku" and then went on to Croatoa... where I thought other people were going to work on the Penelope Nemmers arc with me at the same time, but I think my Brute was the only one working on it?
Thought it would help more of the group, though most of us had good progress on the Geas of the Kind Ones Accolade. Picked up Jack of Irons and Eochai roaming about, and a few of us got the Tuatha and pumpkin badges.
Went from 29 to 31, and think my Brute died the most of all of us.I keep hoping he'll get tough enough to sit in a spawn for 15 seconds without support (especially when I add a new power or set bonus), but no such luck. He'll get there... eventually. He's more fun to play now that he has a few attack powers and his heal, and Lightning Rod in a level should really take the cake.
Not sure what you all did after I had to go (just been exhausted lately... not sick anymore, but now I'm busy grading a lot), but I hope you had fun. -
Quote:Archery/Devices is pretty good for Blasters, especially if you don't want redraw. Yes, Devices needs some help, but it's nice having a Stealth type power that doesn't slow you down, and cal trops or trip mines are a nice power to protect you if mobs get too close. I pretty much use all the Devices powers before a fight, and only Archery during it, so I don't even notice the redraw. To be honest? I'm not sure I'll ever level up a character red side again outside of the Isolators supergroup.
But this gives me the opportunity to level up AT's blue side that would have otherwise been shut out. So far, I've made and got to Paragon:
Elec/elec dom (chosen over elec/* controller due to better matching of powers) (I'm a sucker for same/same power sets)
Kinetic/sr scrapper
Arrow/arrow corruptor (considered a defender, but decided w/ increased damage and blasters didn't have a non-redraw secondary)
En/traps corruptor (again, considered a defender but was interested in increased damage)
Probably going to roll a Archery/TA Corruptor myself. I'm not sure why Scourge makes a difference for me, but it does. Defenders, I feel like my damage is always pathetic, and the new Vigilance isn't going to change my Defender (even my sonic) taking ages to defeat a boss when on a team. Kind of waiting to see if I keep liking my Ice/Storm first.
Is that better than previous Civ games, in your impressions? I keep trying to like Civilization, but unlike most strategy games, I can never get the hang of it. Civilization IV... infuriates me. Whenever my civ gets a decent starting position, everyone wants to make war on me, even when I behave as I do in other games, making me really wonder about the AI behavior. And wars suck in that game... the computer civs all seem to rocket forward in technology while still being able to create zerg-like armies that are quite hard to fight, let alone defend against. *sighs* -
Quote:Yeah, if you use Range to talk about speed of moving through a mission, that doesn't really make sense, and you do have to get into combat range, or course. Only real part where it makes a difference is in the area you can cover with your AOEs, and not having to chase down your targets very much.Range is often underrated, however it is also often overrated. Every AT has to run through the whole mission. The fact that you can kill a spawn from 40 feet away, but the scrapper has to run to it first becomes less important, since after the fight you will have to cover that distance anyway. It is also likely that you will spend time moving around anyway, kiting has been recommended as a blaster tactic in this very thread.

Yeah, I'm not sure it's worth discussing invention sets until you play the game for awhile and get how the game is set up.
Energy/Energy is a great combo, and pairs nicely with Hurdle and Combat Jumping, so you can leap in to do melee damage, or leap in to cut loose with your AOE powers and knock things down, which is a good way to keep your opponents from shooting back at you. -
Quote:Oh, it's certainly possible. It was and still is. IOs just give people a new standard for performance, along with the newish difficulty settings. Even if you have defense, it's still best to not let your targets fire back at you. Knock 'em on their backside and beat them up via melee, or stun them and do the same. Or just drop them fast when you get in melee. My EM/EM just grins when people run in close on him, as they're down after one or two attacks. All this talk about needing IOs to be able to blap is funny...
I have been and still am blapping away on a Standard IO build. No set bonuses or anything.
Half the fun was not having the defenses and having to BLAP everything down before your green bar disappears (Or the RED bar, depending on how close it gets).
I know, I know... you can do it more effectively and can take on greater odds... But still... It's just a bit silly to talk like this wasn't possible before IOs and like it is no longer possible without them
Should be okay, and you can sap with that combo, too. Power Boost and your other attacks will make it possible, if I remember what one guide says on the subject. I rather like Elec or Energy being paired with the Elec primary, as it feels a little light on ST damage. Especially if you're not going to go for the Snipe and don't find your pet to be as helpful a you want. -
I don't know what we need that Paragon Wiki doesn't already cover. If you're in to making lists of your characters and such, that should go cross-server anyway.
-
I'll probably never run low level in the Isles again, unless I somehow begin to really miss Cap Au Diable, the only sub level 20 zone there that I like. But I had two lowbie villains run through there this summer, so I doubt I'll want to do it again soon. I really, really do not like Mercy and Port Oakes. Bloody depressing to run through and most of the stories aren't that amazing. Some of them are fun, but I've played through them a few times and they don't really make up for the locale.
I may run some characters through things in Paragon, as there's still something great about entering Atlas Park or Galaxy for the first time, and I like the Hollows. Having access to more content and team stuff is nice as well, I guess, but you can still run Faultline's last two arcs when you get in from Praetoria, and the Task Forces are there to run when you get back as well.
I'm probably mostly going to do Praetoria, as it's a lot more dynamic and interesting to run through. You can find teams to run through there, but it's also fun and good to do solo. I'm still making characters of all types. I had held off on a Brute until I could have him mostly blueside, but my two other new ones are a Blaster and a Scrapper. The only ATs I don't really care to play are Defenders and MMs, so those are the only ones I avoid. I doubt I'll make any new Controllers, though. They're pretty much team required for me until they get a pet, and I solo enough that this makes things difficult. Doms are the way, there.
Everyone else, I still like and will still play. All the ATs that I play are different in how they run so I can't see replacing one with another. The only reason I'm not going to have more than 2 Controllers is that I mostly like to beat stuff around, and I like to be able to solo when I need to. Doms are more fun for that, but I don't even play my one Dominator that much.
