  1. I'd have to go with my first character, Guardian Lion. There'd be all these nice tribute statues to me all over Paragon. Signature power: a stone version of Hibernate. Backstory hasn't ever been worked out, but I always imagine it involved one of those stone lions, a wizard, and a bad idea.

If I had a canon redname, it'd be Eochai. I started just before the first Halloween event, and I still remember how amazingly cool and eerie it was to be fighting the pumpkin-headed giant.
  2. I went with three Dark Watcher's (to-hit debuff and two others with to-hit debuff in) and three Touch of the Nictus (heal, heal/rech, acc/heal). I've got Tactics and a *lot* of global accuracy, and checking the numbers, his to-hit rolls seemed good, so I wasn't worried about acc. For me, the point is maximum debuff and healing. Anything else he does is bonus, in my opinion. It's been working well for me, but might not be right for a more aggressive dark. Mine just concentrates on making sure the mobs don't win, and leaves making sure our side does win to the rest of the team (plus her sonic attack debuffs).

I could see Cloud Senses for the ranged defense if you were going that way, though I decided for me I wasn't close enough to the defense cap to lose all the healing.
  3. I don't know about soloing AVs, but my ill/storm became a lot more fun when I started getting serious about ranged defense. Before, I had to keep the Hurricane debuff on things to stay alive, but after I put these sets in, my ranged defense went to 27.25% and suddenly I was a *lot* more survivable:
    • Blind: Lockdown
    • Phantasm: Blood Mandate
    • Deceive: Malaise's Illusions
    • Thunder Clap: Stupefy
    • Spectral Wounds, Lightning Storm: Thunderstrike
    Later I will add:
    • Steamy Mist: Red Fortune
    • Flash: Lockdown
    • O2 Boost: Numina's
That will get me closer to the cap, though it will be hard to hit it without gimping other powers like PA, Tornado, FR. Also, the Numina proc will only work for a while after I've healed the Phantasm (or a teammate), but I have three slots in O2 anyway to max the heal, and the benefits seem worth throwing three more slots at it.

When I get closer to 50, I'll look at whether I want to go all the way with ranged defense, as I can strip more slots out of Spectral Terror, Tornado, and Freezing Rain.

This works great against normal content. But, if soloing AVs is the most important thing, I guess you'd be going for a perma-PA build and ignoring everything but global recharge.
  4. I've got both Mind/Storm and Ill/Storm at 41. The Ill/Storm is a lot of fun. Just about enough control between Illusion's spotty controls and Storm's solid extra control powers, and all the damage that comes from Storm. Plus it's easy, as you said, to crank up the chaos as needed, or when solo.

Mind/Storm hasn't ever been much for damage, for me. It's got some nice single-target attacks, and definitely letting the mobs help beat themselves up with confusion powers is a plus, but if you're looking at Mind, you know you don't get any pets you get to keep. Also, the Storm powers are fairly indiscriminate and don't tend to spare the guys you've confused. I wind up using the fear cone for damage, which seems kind of sad.

That said, what Mind/Storm does do well is AoE control, specifically the fast-recharging kind. It's kind of ridiculous at that. If you want to get good at positioning, TK is a great hold, and Hurricane will help you keep stuff in a corner so they don't escape the TK. Freezing Rain, Thunderclap, the aoe sleep, Mass Confusion, Terrify, and of course the AoE hold, and none of those scatter mobs. If you're willing to scatter mobs, add Lightning Storm and Tornado. Plus, keep in mind that while Mind has no stuns (I think, been a while), both Thunder Clap and Tornado stun, so you can drop a Tornado, rush in and stun with TC, then Tornado will catch up and stun the rest.

With that kind of control, you can definitely solo. It's not fire/kinetics and it never will be, but you've got so many tools to call on that you should be able to provide all of the control for an 8-person team without too much trouble, I think, as well as having any number of options to deal with solo missions.
  5. Thanks for taking time to fix the power customization thing.
  6. What's game-breaking to one person may not be to another. I could lose every badge on every alt and it wouldn't bug me at all. People who are into badging, however, would probably be livid. I'd imagine RPers would be just as cranky if all the bios got wiped out.

For me, the look and feel of the character is pretty much what I'm here for. How they look and what they can do (which is partly visual) is what the characters *are*, to me, not what they've done. The thought of having to redo all of the custom powersets on 20+ alts, that I've spent considerable time over months getting just right, makes me feel slightly ill, and like going and doing something else. I've barely been on since I17 hit.

But the severity of some of the bugs and the sheer number of them this time around caught me offguard.

I very much understand the emotional need for some people to stand up and Defend the Game! no matter what. I love this game. That's why I'm here, stating this. I love it. I love seeing it evolve, I love seeing the enthusiasm the developers still have for the game as a living entity. That's why I came here to report the disappointment in this specific issue. If they were having trouble convincing their management -not- to release the issue until they fixed the reported bugs, well here's more power to them.
That's about where I'm at, too. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've taken a week off of playing to wait for stability to occur. Looks like it'll be more than a week, from the number of threads I'm seeing. Plus, still waiting for the official word on the power customization bug.
  8. It's bad enough that they don't care to have fixed it, but if they knew about it and didn't even bother to warn us...gee, that's swell.

I've got some idea how complex that is (other than that I have absolutely no clue how their database is structured). It's not about how hard it is to do. It's that when you break things in production, you fix them. Sometimes that's a pain.

But, I agree it's unlikely that this will happen. Doesn't change that I'm not going to go fix it myself until I get some kind of reaction from the bug report, and see what they fix in the next patch or so. Probably they're too busy with graphics issues and WW problems for this to be anyone's priority.
  10. Just one, Standing Horse, who is named for an actual Native American who claimed to have been on a flying saucer. Maybe he was. Maybe it gave him strange powers...

I'd really like some kind of acknowledgement of this issue from the devs, but I assume their focus is almost entirely on the auction house right now (and I don't blame them). I'm guessing there's a 99% chance that the final solution will be to offer another round of free costume tokens (and I'll accept that and move on).

The only real concern for me is my shaken faith in the integrity of our character database. I'd like to know that the devs are taking this issue seriously in terms of investigating how it happened and what needs to be done to make sure something like this never happens again. What if next time it's actual costumes that get wiped? Or Influence? Or slotted enhancements ("Sorry about the purples, dude, but you can get more, right?")?
I think some people have one set of power customizations they use on all of the costume slots for that character. Those aren't hit nearly as badly by this. Makes sense as an RP thing that the powers might be consistent and all, but I for one tend to recolor some powers, dark ones especially, to go with the color scheme of the costume, and not all powers in a set are the same. I'm not bothered by the inf it would take to fix it; that's trivial. I'm bothered by the time, though, and especially the fact that I'd spent a long time refining some and don't know what I had them set on.

I'm waiting for the bug report to be resolved before I log any more characters on, in hopes that they will pull the data from backups, if it's really gone.
  12. Just tested three characters. Same problem. Custom powers are gone in slots past the first one. Not testing any further characters, as some of mine have highly customized powers, and I haven't saved religiously after every change.
  13. You can never have too much overkill.

One reason to take Power Boost: Aid Self (2 interrupt, 4 heal/recharge from different sets, or four of one set, or whatever). On my archery/energy, I skipped all the melee attacks except the mandatory one, but did take Boost Range and Power Boost. I tend to save it for when I need healing as opposed to using it to beef up a stun. The combination of PB/AS doesn't take much longer than AS alone, and the extra healing makes a lot of difference.

However, if you don't have six slots to devote to Aid Self, and you're not trying to become a Stun God, then yeah, skip Power Boost.
  15. It hadn't actually occurred to me to take an iPad outside. I haven't seen one in person yet, but I definitely see your point: if it's big enough to take up laptop-sized space, but far less capable than a laptop, then it's probably a silly thing to carry around if what you want is a laptop. I'd very likely never take it outside, and just use it for light-duty stuff that I can suddenly do without being at my desk or using a phone, such as: quick web browsing, a way for someone to catch me over IM, maybe reading things or playing games on the sofa. If I'm going outside, I'll take the phone, and not the iPad.

I really think it's more about convenience than power. In fact, another use I thought of for it (this thread is slowly nudging me towards the Apple store): I could put all the pdf manuals I've got for my guitar amps, pedals, etc on it. Means I don't have to flip away from Logic if I'm recording something and need to look up the amperage on the fuse I just blew. It might be a silly example, but to me it's the same as having ParagonWiki on a separate device: I can leave CoH running full-screen and see what's going on, and look stuff up all I want on something else. That sounds compelling to me.

I agree, though I'll approach from either direction: either I already have a name in mind and look for the powerset that will go with the concept, possibly including rerolls until I find powers I like (ss/inv, claws/regen, claws/wp scrapper, possibly rerolling to claws/wp brute for a lion character, for instance), or I'll have found some powerset I like and want to try it with another primary or secondary. I apparently really like dark melee, dark armor, sonic attack, dark miasma, illusion and storm, because I've got plenty of all of them in various combinations. Then the concept comes alive, and the character flourishes, or it never quite gels, and the character gets rerolled or deleted.

For individual powers, I tend to favor low activation times. I also like stacking effects, which is where a lot of my powerset combos come from. Ice blast looks fun and has holds, so I made an ice/dark corruptor. Dark armor has a nice stun aura, so, dark/mace tank. Archery is fun, but the range looks unrealistically short to me, so I paired it with /energy for Boost Range. Which just cries out for teleport. Etc.

And rad/rad, because if you recolor it, it can be really pretty. Oh well, so much for high concept.

Well, if what I want to run is the OS the iPad runs on? Apple's integration of products is generally pretty nice. I ran SuSE Linux as my sole OS for a couple of years, and Debian for a while after that, so I'm not entirely unfamiliar with the alternatives.
  18. I agree, controller or defender with a scrapper makes a nice duo. Why not both? Dark defender! I'm partial to dark/sonic, and dark/ice looks pretty good too.
  19. Q. How many Storm Defenders does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
    A. One, standing underneath it with Hurricane on.

    Q. How many Dark Defenders does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
    A. One random fool with a ladder and good intentions, and one dark defender to debuff the light so it remains cowering in the new bulb without a chance of possibly ever hitting anything.

It would be great if they could use invasion tech to have a "Meteor Invasion" -- a giant hunk of rock falling from the sky that you have to pummel before it lands. It could spawn "chunks" that break off the main meteor and fall to the ground, which in turn spawn fires that non-flying heroes would have to put out.
I wonder if it would work to do something like that, only with something like a new class of mob, kind of like an AV, but not quite as tough, something you can stop either by damage (difficult) or by applying enough holds/stuns/etc. It'd definitely have a heroic feel, like trying to stop Doomsday or Black Adam.

I like the idea of being able to achieve a goal by use of control powers. If there were enough of that in the game, maybe Containment wouldn't have been necessary.

I wouldn't want to get rid of the instanced missions we do have, though. Also, I like the way the public events here are optional and cooperative.
  21. I don't think we're going to run out of Free Software Neckbeards any time soon. (That said, I shaved mine off years ago, and am about to replace my Ubuntu server with a Mac Mini.)

I agree with the above, though. A scrollable map of Paragon would be nice. Not sure if a specialized version of ParagonWiki would really need to happen, or if that couldn't be just as well handled by bookmarking the parts you want fast access to.

Don't have an iPad yet, but I will at some point. The best use I've come up with for it so far is a replacement for sheet music, if it'll stay put on a music stand.

Some new tiles for the existing tilesets wouldn't go amiss either.

Tileset maps are where a lot of this game is played, and sprucing them up would have a proportionately large effect on adding variety to the game experience.
This. Very much of the game is spent on mission maps.

    DM/DA vs. Kat/WP

Definitely katana/wp. My first 50 scrapper will be dm/da, but it's kind of fiddly. Really useful and powerful, but if you want something that just works, willpower is the way to go. Also have a db/willpower, and yes, if you just want it to work, probably avoid dual blades. I'm happy with it now, but early on it was sort of underwhelming, and you sound like you don't want to fool around with combos. Katana/willpower should be really straightforward.
  24. I don't know. I hadn't heard of it until today, so I just checked it out. It's got a smart, attractive design and all, but I think the user title color kind of clashes a bit with the more serene, peaceful colors of the rest of the board.

Nice start though. I think if you tweak that a bit, you'll be set.
  25. My storm/energy has something to the effect of "Storm/Energy. Knockback of the gods. Not LFT."
