Specifically, too many capes on players. It's alright with a few NPCs here and there, but opening up the possibility to all players potentially means a lot more server load.

That's not really an accurate statement.

The developers have never said "Well, we just can't do it."

Lack of certain costume pieces has always come down to one of the following: potential clipping issues, insufficient return on development time and costs, increased server load (see above), technical limitations due to how the player character skeletons are set up (set number of attachment nodes, inability to have simultaneous different upper and lower body rigs, etc.), or another non-trivial technical issue.

    Pretty much, yeah.

PvP in this game was tacked on well after launch, and was NOT a design consideration while the game was originally being developed. And after CoV came out and there was apparently a short-lived reinvestment in PvP development, Cryptic moved most of the CoH/CoV staff over to the Marvel MMO which was eventually canceled. the remaining devs had to choose what got their development time, and PvP was not worth the return on investment. Heck, bases suffered the same fate (partially because the base system incorporated SG vs SG PvP, but I digress). Even with a larger development team, Paragon Studios still has to carefully decide how to allocate their resources. And due to the development history of the game, PvP is unfortunately still not really worth the return on the sort of investment that would have to be made in order for it to be a robust, balanced gameplay system within this game.

As for PvP farming itself: Well, why not?

I mean, there are no real "exploits" going on, and the farmers aren't really disrupting any other PvPers' experiences. The only downside is that some characters have access to the ridiculously inflated PvP IOs. Thankfully, there are ways to acquire them outside of PvP farming. Outside of PvP, for that matter. As far as I'm concerned, that does mitigate the complaint some.

Yeah, they've been using the beta server to test new store items. In addition to the Carnie costume parts, the Super Packs, a coyote transformation travel power, and an alignment change token are also being tested.
  5. Just popping in to remind everyone that there is a Super Pack feedback thread in the beta forum, which is accessible by all VIPs. So if you've got the beta client, please go try some out for yourself then let the developers know what you think of your experience. They cost 0 points on the beta market, so you can "buy" as many as you want.

Nah, we can't wear gaudy metal faceplates. That's why the art team is whipping up full-head helmets instead for the memorial.

Nice. Gives those of us at tier 9 something to do with Reward Tokens if we don't need consumables and aren't particularly interested in the VIP costume set du jour.

  13. Of course, you need a league that actually listens to what the leader says. Throughout beta, we had problems with new people doing the trial for the first time not listening about pulling the IDF away from the techs, which meant we had to spend extra time in the buildings.

The attempt at adding three more slots wasn't until the Freedom beta, so it and the Alpha slot probably aren't connected.

After three successful runs of the TPN Campus Trial (2 Wednesday night, 1 Thursday night), I feel I should share the effective strategy (mentioned in the above post), especially since I have read that some people are already getting frustrated enough to ignore it and return to BAF/Lambda grind. So here it is!

Phase 1: Pretty simple. You have to clear out the IDF surrounding the buildings, without damaging the cameras disbursed by H.D. Simply make sure your team is not using AoE Damage attacks, and this phase should be cake.

Phase 2.1: Main Building. Enter through the black doors. The entire league blitzes through the hallways to the center room. Once there, any taunt-capable characters (mainly Tankers, Brutes, and some Scrappers) need to herd the IDF mobs away from the Technicians at the terminals. Once all IDF are about 30 ft. from the Technician, the Technician becomes vulnerable. Have a few characters (preferably high single-target damage dealers like Blasters and Stalkers) skim around the perimeter defeating the technicians and clicking the computers.

Phase 2.2: Once all 4 terminals have been clicked, Maelstrom will spawn, followed shortly by a re-spawn of the IDF and Technicians. Again, while the majority of the league keeps Maelstrom busy, have the Taunters pull the IDF away from the terminals towards Maelstrom, as there is probably enough AoE flying around to deal with both sets of enemies. The same small group of people should continue around the perimeter defeating technicians and accessing terminals until all 4 are complete. Then, converge on Maelstrom. You should be able to defeat him before, or within seconds of, the next spawn of Technicians, thus completing the phase.

Phase 3.1: In this phase, you will follow a similar pattern as Phase 2.1, except you have the added minor obstacle of having to protect H.D. You are going to ignore the telepathists and civilians outside. Make it crystal clear that AoE Damage attacks and uncontrollable pets are to be disengaged when transitioning from building to building. The first building you have to enter is usually TPN Today (the eastern building). Once inside, blitz to the center, and let the Taunters do their thing, pulling IDF to the center of the room. (This should also take care of the group currently attacking H.D., thus eliminating that threat.) Once again, the majority of the league deals with IDF in the center while a small group goes around the perimeter and takes care of the Technicians and terminals. Once all 4 terminals have been taken care of, the league will be teleported out of the building, and should move on to the next building. H.D. spawns in a repeating sequential building pattern from East to West. So the order will go: TPN Today (east)-->Main Building (center)-->VisualCorp (west), then back to TPN Today.

The telepaths' debuffs are negligible. As long as you move quickly and follow your specific role, you should be gaining more Public Opinion than you are losing (due to converted civilians outside).

Phase 3.2: Once you reach 500/500 of Public Opinion and keep it there for a certain amount of time (seems to be 10-15 seconds, contrary to the official site's guide), Maelstrom will respawn outside and the civilians will disperse. AoE attacks are fine here, simply dog-pile Maelstrom to defeat him. Beware of his Marked For Death attack: if a crosshairs icon appears above your character's head, get away from him until he executes his kill shot.

Phase 4.1:Once again, you will be following the same building pattern as in Phase 3.1, ignoring the outside threats. (Again, provided you follow the pattern, you should be gaining more Public Opinion than you are losing.) The one difference is that Maelstrom will be present and he likes to one-shot league members as they are exiting buildings with his version of Vorpal Judgement. Ignore him, and if you are unlucky and he hits you, simply hit the hospital and join the rest of the league in the current building as soon as possible. Follow the pattern and you should be at 500/500 Public Opinion after a couple building rotations.

Phase 4.2: Your final confrontation with Maelstrom. His Whirlwind Hands (for which you'll get a prompt much like you would Nova Fist in Lambda) is not overly deadly from what I've seen, but can do quite a bit of knockback. If you see he's about to do it, jumping away from him might save you a few seconds and a chunk of health. Just keep slugging away at him until he is defeated, thus achieving you victory once and for all over the trial.

All three times we have run this, there have been new people in the league. With a brief explanation prior to queuing up, as well as quick reminders throughout the trial, we achieved success using this exact strategy. The one downfall it currently has is that it makes the "Fair and Balanced" badge (and thus the Master Of... badge) impossible to get. However, this strategy should enable enough players to complete the trial successfully, and once enough people get the general hang of the trial's pattern, a strategy can be formed for getting badgers their badges.

Good luck! I wish you all success.
That's quite interesting. I don't think we ever considered just ignoring the Telepaths during beta. Of course, this strategy needs good pullers and more than a few high DPS toons to pull off cleanly, so I'm not sure how popular it will become. Nevertheless, congratulations on beating TPN and coming up with a different way to do it!
  16. If the Issue 22 beta is another "VIP beta" and is open from day 1 to any schmoe with a VIP account, and goes horribly as a result, I am SO PMing this thread to every redname I can.

    I can do it:

Say you want to convert a Doctored Wounds: Heal/Recharge (50). If you have any Enhancement Converters in your inventory, you'll have a new "Convert" option next to "Manage" on your Enhancement tray. Clicking on it will open up the conversion window. You drag the IO from your try to the Input slot. You then select whether you want to convert it to another Doctored Wounds IO, another Healing IO, or another uncommon IO. If you have enough Converters, you can click on a button and convert the IO. Since the IO is level 50, there's no chance of it converting into an IO from a set that caps out below 50. There's also no chance of converting it into a very rare IO or a PvP IO.
  18. One thing I'd like to point out (unless it's been changed internally) is the level of the IO is taken into consideration when converting. So a level 50 IO will NOT convert into an IO from a set that caps out at 35 or 40. This can sometimes greatly limit conversion outcomes. For example: If you convert an Aegis IO above level 40 to another Resist Damage set, you'll only get Titanium Coating IOs as the result because these are the only two non-VR or PvP Resist Damage sets that go to 50.

Edit: You can also convert boosted IOs, and the Enhancement boosts will remain intact.

MoM on the other hand is damn near perfect. Only one or two "gimmicks" at one time, and TIME to explain what's going to happen in between phases to get the league on the same page.

I like TPN well enough, but I'd do MoM every night.
TPN is actually far less complicated than MOM in terms of mechanics. It's just a matter of efficiency and tenacity. Both trials were completed during beta, after strategies were figured out. So please don't just say "It's too hard" then go back to running BAF and Lambda.

    That's actually a vaild statement.

Even before adding an f2p option, Lineage 2 was vastly more popular than CoH. Heck, the Lineage games made up the lion's share of NCSoft's revenue for quite some time. That might still be the case, as I don't know exactly how well Aion did in South Korea, or what type of receptions GW2 and Wildstar are going to receive once they launch.

CoH is important to NCSoft for several reasons, but don't fool yourself into thinking that some relatively small forum issues - and they are just that - are more important than keeping arguably the company's flagship title running smoothly during its f2p launch.

Fun fact: game studios have multiple departments. The character artists, VFX artists, animators, and programmers who are responsible for the stuff in this loyalty program are likely not the same people that track down bugs, write new content, and work mostly on under-the-hood stuff. Of course, your post was rather vague, so who knows to what you're specifically referring.

Not really. I mean, "Please stay subscribed to our game in addition to/instead of these new games that are coming out, and we'll reward you" is a fairly transparent, and quite literal, loyalty program. Obviously, nobody at Paragon can come right out and plug another company's game while explaining this, but it is what it is, and there's been no real deception. At least they've tried to come up with themes for the rewards.
