It is not an opinion, and it is not an incorrect statement. Rumors can be started by making statements, and they can be started by asking questions. Especially leading questions that are based on false premises.

now, did you do it intentionally? No, probably not. But your comments to some of the other posts in the thread clearly indicate that you believe a change was made that increased the rates of high-level components based on participation. By continuing to respond to other posters encouraging them in their posting of random results as if they could possibly corroborate your theory, is encouraging those people to believe a falsehood.

Whether you did it intentionally or not, whether you know it is false or not, you are encouraging them to believe a falsehood.

    ST melee DPS : Romans
ST ranged DPS / GM hunting without regen debuffs : Longbow
AoE damage : Clockwork, with the caveat that if the chain power still isn't fixed (I haven't checked if it is), it steals XP so may steal rewards
    Buff : Phantoms
    Debuff : Storm Elementals
The patch notes said that the clock's chain power was swapped out for something else so that it wouldn't steal exp any more.

Except for the original Mender Ramiel Story Arc. Which isn't much. =)

    True enough =)

And I just realized I didn't answer. I do everything. I run story arcs often, I especially spend a lot of time in Oroboros.

Most of my friends don't care about rewards and just want to play the game. I'm the same way. I love the stories and after 3 years am not bored with them. Some I like more than others. The new tip missions I love that they have actual super enemies to fight instead of just a named boss. Though I do wish they would have more variety and use the full list of villains and heros from the bank missions instead of just the small "rogues gallery" list.

We often run each other's story arcs and none of us care if we are getting merits or not.

I also usually toss out a notice or two that people are welcome to join and it's rare that I don't get 2-3 responses even late at night. Granted, the Maria Jenkins and Tina McIntyre arcs are the easiest to recruit for =)

You have completely misunderstood what the patch notes are saying. They are not saying an easier time earning "high level" components. They are saying that fewer people should get 10 threads instead of a component. Your experiences documented only show that you have seen zero change. No threads before, no threads after = zero change.

Dreadman also has reported zero change. No threads before, no threads after.

what we need are some MM's to come in and say if they are still getting the 10 thread reward or if they are getting components.

So far only one change has been made that altered the level of component and that was to make uncommons a bit less common. That was a while back and not related to the current patch.

This patch is just 10 threads vs component. Level of component is irrelevant, and I have to back Snowglobe, all you're doing is confusing people and starting false rumors.
  7. One other to try, see if they made a pre-built costume for it. Select that and it will show you where all the pieces are.

You know you're obligated to post a screenshot of your character drinking tea made from marketears wearing a top had and monacle don't you?

Otherwise we'll have to confiscate all of your earnings and donate it to the bonfires in the Crazy 88 bases.

    =)

But in all seriousness, nicely done and congrats on your ill-gotten gains.

Nothing about them is new to me, so it's essentially no different than running papers in terms of repetition. And for the Praetorian arcs, those can only be completed on new Praetorian characters anyway (which excludes the characters I exclusively play these days). And yes, I've also done every TF and trial in the game, but those at least have the rewards and fun factor going for them.

    4. Aged content. This primarily applies to hero side, but the majority of the heroside story arcs are from before the City of Villains release, which almost universally have horrible writing, cardboard-flat character personalities, and practically no mission mechanics aside from defeat-all, kill the boss, or grab the glowie. Even on the odd occasion that I feel like doing an old story arc, I am soon reminded why I avoid them. Villain missions are much better in this regard, although even that feels pretty dated with stories and mechanics of tip missions (particularly the I19 vigilante->villain and rogue->hero tips, which are fantastic) and the quality of Praetoria stories.
These two reasons I see named often, but I really don't get how the trials or taskforces are any better. All of them suffer from one or both of these flaws, so avoiding stories arcs, then doing something with the same flaw you are supposedly avoiding is silly.

Now depending on your attack chain, you will have to factor in how often you use that attack - thats the best way. I'm sure someone else has a better way tho.
How often the attack is used isn't needed on this comparison since the thought is that it is deciding which one to put into the same power. If ToD then it adds X damage, if Mako it adds y, X or Y is larger therefore use it.

I'm on a Mac, so no Mids for me. Which is why none of my characters have particularly viable builds.

  13. Like the new avatar BrandX. =)

Does anyone know the math though? Like How much averaged per attack is done by Mako and how much by Touch of Death and then assuming xresistance to lethal and y resistance to negative across the enemies, one has a (presumably insignificant) advantage?

It's so much easier on a tank too, they can run 20% chance to fire psi damage procs thanks to taunt in everything. Nearly anything that resists Psi takes bonus damage from lethal so it's a perfect pairing. Heh. I think robots are the exception. buggers.
  14. For my Broadsword character it was pretty simple, I went with the def debuf set proc. But for dual blades I mostly have to stick to melee damage sets.

I can't figure out the math, is the 15% change to fire on touch of death better, worse, or equal to the 20% chance to fire on mako considering the difference in resists between lethal and negative damage?
  15. Major nailed it. To put some numbers, if you have 100% damage at level 50 using high-level IOs at level 21 you'll only have 58%. But if you followed Major's instructions, you'd still have 100% at level 21.

Down lower than 20 you can't have a single bonus on each portion of the IO higher than 15%, which gets hard to bring a large total at the end even with 6 slots. (if you only get 12% per slot, 6 of them is only 72%).

And yes both purple and pvp sets are subject to this. You can get more details on the Wiki.

Now, this effect happens before ED comes into play, so the other option, is to overslot. Dropping 5 level 50 damage enhancers into a power will only give you about 118% at level 50, but down at level 10, instead of the 28% it would be if the reduction kicked in after ED, it will be 51%. Of course, you'll only have 1 slot left for acc, dam, recharge, and endurance and whatever you slot will be cut down by three-quarters. Low-level optimization is a pretty tricky process.
  16. The funny thing about needing to be level 50, I tried it in the closed beta, and I oro'd down to 45, thinking I woudl still have access to it, and I could use the power to self-level shift to 50 and rampage against anything. Sadly this crashed the mission every time and the dev response was that it was WAI.

So, it's not nearly as handy as you'd think. Plus you can only slot interrupt into it, not recharge or end reduction.

Not by as much as you might think though. My S/L is starting at 29 and all others (typed and positional) below 10. All but AOE (again both typed and positional) below 5.

So with S/L capped, Aoe is at 21 and all others around 14-17. So reducing incoming, yes, but not a whole lot.

    The Wow! Factor

It really is. If they ever nerf it, it will be totally deserved, but I'll still cry.

And back on topic, since most people were giving wow's about mechanics, I'll go a different direction for a moment:

The first time I entered the Shadow Shard. Holy Crap. Best visuals for any zone in the game.

The first time I saw the giant throne in the Shadow Shard and realized what it was.

Fighting the Jade Spider and thinking, duuuude a spider that big would freak the hell out of me. Plus, it's way bigger than any other Giant Monster and you get to solo it.

Going into Dark Astoria for the first time. With the runes on the zombies glowing in the mist all around.

I'm a bit of a lore fanboy. I love the stories. I did the cape mission, I read all the plaques, I read the website and wiki, and I did all the Rikti stories in the Warzone. And then I did the Lady Grey Taskforce for the first time. And I saw Honoree and who he was. Literally, I got sick to my stomach. I had to walk away from the game a bit. Almost missed the end of the fight. Granted, I am a big king arthur fan (I have a Welsh version of the Red Book hehe), so there is that.

As a follow up, having read his letter from the time capsule, screwing over Ajax in Dean MacArthur's arc is one of the cruelest acts you get access to redside. Very memorable.

Seeing the Eye of the Leviathan blink and move.

I know you're all bored of it and hate it by now, but that very first time doing the Statesman Taskforce, when Aeon doesn't know he's broadcasting live.

The resolution of Johnny Sonata's story arc. "I win... I guess". Absolutely wonderful.

My first Winter Event and playing on the ice.

And I said it before, but Frostfire's mission. Major wow factor from start to finish. Visuals, the fight, the map, all of it. And so early in the game too. That is probably what hooked me on CoH to be honest. My friends took me on Frostfire after I'd been playing for only 3 hours solo including the time to create my first character and get out of the tutorial.

Nicer still would be the easy solution: Give all pets EITHER melee or ranged powers, but never both.

    Problem solved forever.

I've been playing for over 3 years now and don't have a single character "all done". Even if you don't count incarnate stuff, I still don't have a single one "all done". Not even the one level-locked at 15 for 18 months.

Muhaha, I will never have to be a philanthropist! I guess it is fitting that 4/5 of my characters are redside.
  21. I can say this much: I have a capped vs melee elec/elec brute. She can run at x8 against only those enemies who have primarily energy or fire attacks because her resists handle what her defenses don't (CoT and Rikti and basically no one else ((well council but they're such wimps they don't count))).

If I pop enough purples to get S/L to 45% she can handle x8 romans, malta, and usually arachnos (sometimes the psi is still an issue depending on spawn).

That difference is enormous to me. I can feel it immediately. S/L is vastly superior.
  22. [QUOTE=Flowergnome;3701036]1) My three 'mains', each in their 30s, are scrappers: claws/regen, katana/SR, dual blade/WP. Are those still more or less regarded as sensible pairings or did changes in the past years totally ruin any of these?

All still good. Redraw on the claws/regen might be an issue for some people, but that's not new and I run a Broadsword/Regen and it's not too bad.

Since you like melee and damage, you really NEED to make yourself a shield defense character. Scrapper, Brute or tank, doesn't matter, but give one a shot. You'll love it.

    Quote:
    2) I've thought about starting a new char to experience Preatoria and reacquaint myself with the game. Given that I will (by choice and time constraints) mostly be out and about solo, what would be useful pairings for that (perhaps even to take a char from 1-50)? I generally prefer dmg dealing to tanking and power sets with less micromanaging. Self healing is (was?) always nice. Due to limited time, something that does not require the very best augmentations to work would be nice. I realise this is awfully broad, but some general pointers would be very much appreciated - I already have a lot of reading to do to catch up.
Just a caution: Praetoria is FAR more difficult than paragon or the rogue isles. Several of the factions have powers you don't expect until much higher level. Ghouls, Syndicate and Destroyers to be exact.

Dark/SR is dirt cheap and very potent. Has a heal in the attacks and solid defenses. I've really enjoyed the experience in praetoria on my dominator as well. And they are more damage than control really. At least, the way I play them heh.

    Quote:
2.a) More specifically. Could the new powersets (kinetic melee, dual pistol...) be something to look at? Some early research led me to a plants/fire dominator as an interesting concept; and apparently quite playable.
    Plants/fire is awesome.

Dual pistols is a bit maudlin. It is in the middle of the road on damage, slow activations, some love some hate the gun-fu animations. And all the secondary effects are too small to be worth anything. Just go fire damage under all circumstances even against an enemy that resists fire.

Kinetic melee has annoying sounds. But with stacked buffs can put out some awesome damage. It plays like a slower claws really, with one ranged power a little knock, etc.

    Quote:
    3) Anything I should definitely learn about before making my choice? Hero/villain 'attunement' - any definite pro/con for one or the other?
On nearly all servers there is far more activity heroside. So if you like teaming, that might be a pro. Otherwise, the stories villainside were written later than the heroside so have the benefit of that experience albeit some don't like how you have to be an arachnos lackey until level 50 when you get to break with them and set your own path. I particularly like how you don't have to run all over from zone to zone redside on story arcs. Lots of the hero stuff drives me bonkers that way so I stick to hazard zones (hollows, striga, croatoa) and task forces.

But I dearly love the shadow shard and only heroes can go there.

While, yes you can go vigilante or rogue and play onboth sides, you will find that alignment merits (hero merits/villain merits) are so vastly superior as a way to get whatever loot you want to any other method, that you'll be pressured to keep at least one or two characters a dedicated hero/villain.

People seem to mix and match. Some attacks get set bonuses, but the main heavy-hitters you don't bother with as mutch recharge or endurance as a PvE build, and you put in 1-2 procs. Not sure I've seen too many 3-procs.

But I freely admit I am a PVP gimp so, best to get advice from the ones who are better at it.

As I understand it, the goal is a few hard hitting powers. not ongoing attack chains.

+dam set bonuses do add up. But they aren't as useful as you might hope.

    The Wow! Factor

The first time you hit level 6 and use Spin on a group of 7 or more +1 mobs out on the street with a Claws/ brute and they all die in 1 hit but the lieutenant who is badly wounded. That's a serious Wow! moment right there.

And on plants/ when you get carrion creepers and they obliterate and entire ambush on a 6+ player mission.

Using the real nukes with a blaster never gets old either. I mean the ones with a crash, not rain of arrows or hail of bullets that are just high damage AoEs, no I mean the one-hit kill even the bosses powers. Love those.
