Quote:Same graphics card as meMaybe I'm misinterpreting what the options are saying though. I do have control over the particle slider, but PhysX is completely greyed out, and there was never a time where I had a standalone PhysX card, but the effects used to look much nicer back in the day. Two upgrades later and the physics effects just never looked the same. Right now I'm running an Nvidia GeForce GTX 560, which is 2-3 upgrades past the one I had when the particle physics looked top-notch.
I just loaded up the main PC to find out, and I have *exactly* the same options for you. Maybe the Aegia PhysX one only appears when you actually do have a PhysX card installed in the machine.
If you do increase the Particle options one notch higher, it does suggest having a seperate card to deal with it (seperate PPU). This is believe is the NVidia PhysX system.
There have been some tweaks done to it (i believe) so it could affect what you had seen previously. Not sure why they tweaked it, unless it was to correct some of the more esoteric ragdoll/knockbacks that cropped up occasionally (which then borked it for everyone else). -
Quote:To be fair, considering that they only need to check two forums for news about the #SaveCOH movement, it *isnt* all that hard to get the news out almost as fast as it happens.I've been noticing in my not-at-all-obsessive-search for CoH information on the web, that almost everything we do now is getting almost immediate coverage.
I will admit that most of it is 'they're doomed but they have spunk and we kind of hope they succeed" kinds of coverage but, hey, it keeps the word going around and really thats the best thing we can hope for right now. -
Quote:All Nvidia graphics cards (from the 8800 range and above) support PhysX... If you are talking about the *highest* PhysX setting in game, i believe that is going to be greyed out unless you do have an *actual* PhysX card installed. That still works? I haven't seen effects like in recent years since I no longer have a card that supports PhysX (which AFAIK went out of business and therefore NO new cards will have it). I went looking for a software emulator for the tech but never found anything either.
Ticks me off too. I loved the PhysX stuff. It really made everything look a lot cooler.
If i remember correctly, the lower settings run fine even if you have an ATI card installed (not 100% sure, but to find out, i would have to kick the girlfriend off Guild Wars 2 to check).
Side note: PhysX (in general) doesn't actually require an NVidia card installed. There is actually a CPU emulation version available for developers to use when an Nvidia card is not present.
*HOWEVER* It is up to the developer to implement that Nvidia "free" version. -
Quote:I have an HP Envy laptop with an ATI 5850 card, and i am able to use the "generic" graphics from ATI.Pavilion dv7-4280us.
It has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6550 for a video card. At least, I think that's it. I don't actually know much about computers in general.
The 1st time i needed to update them, i went to the ATI driver page and ran the compatibility tool.
Once it said that I could use the generic drivers, I then just carried on downloading/installing when they did updates.
*edit* Side note: Good to see that at least *for now* it is working. -
Quote:Indeed... it would explain a lot of things (Golden Girl for oneWhy do I suddenly have the feeling that City of Heroes was never actually a game, but a carefully orchestrated, long-term social experiment, to see what happens if you foster a community for several years, then suddenly shut off the unifying factor, and remove all moderation from the forum?
)
*edit* And what are you doing up so late Shadowe? Surely you have work tomorrow... -
-
Laptops are going to be interesting.... some of them play nicely with the generic drivers from the card producers (ATI/NVidia), others only seem to accept the graphics drivers which are issued by the manufacturer of the laptop.
Can you tell us the make/model of the laptop? Might be able to find out what is happening with it. -

Quote:The only one that i can *think* of that was viable, was Exteel. It wasn't actually loosing any money, it was just that the cash flow for it was very irregular (from what I have read in the past, trying to drag up statement to support statement).NCSoft has killed and shelved a number of games. Can't think of any I'd described as viable - conceivably some of them could have eventually been made viable with enough time and money, but none I'd describe as viable when closed, except CoH (unless there are some I am not remembering/didn't know about).
Tabula Rasa *could* have possibly been saved if it had more time in the cooker (or at least the chance to swap over to F2P). Not so sure on Auto Assault being viable... it did have more flaws *overall* than TR.
Dungeon Runners... that would have probably worked if it was setup to run like diablo with Battle.net.
*shrugs*
Just my thoughts. -
Quote:Because rumors start flying around and people tend to act on just rumor and not fact? And people wonder why NCSoft's stock is up and down like a yo-yo.
((Although to be fair, from what I can gather in the stock market, you can miss out big (or lose big) if you don't act on a rumor)) -
*throws E-K a new pack of gum*
Enjoy! -
Just as an update: This has been clarified as to the date and time of closure:
Quote:So, that means that for the UK players, it will be around 08:00 GMT December 1st 2012You will be able to play until 11:59:59PM Pacific Time on November 30, 2012. Servers will go down at midnight.
Rest of Europe, work out from there. -
Quote:It has always been subscription free, even the original Guild Wars is.one of the most successful game launches of the year, Guild Wars 2 delivers an unparalleled gaming experience set in a magical world of high fantasy. Like its predecessor, Guild Wars 2 features a subscription-free business model that allows players to enjoy the entire online experience for just one initial purchase.
Also making it available to Mac users ,so if I read this correct they are doing it F2P as well from the start.Watch out for the closure in about 9/12 monthsCan you really trust this company.
The Mac version is similar to how CoX is done (transgaming i believe are responsible for that, correct me if i am wrong).
*shrugs* You might not be able to trust it, but they have had success with their business model in the past, and it seems to be working now. -

Quote:Thanks, I appreciate what you have said here. I really do. I think I am more concerned and worried about *wrong* information from getting out of the Titan Forums than anything else. I know I sound (and sometimes am) really abrasive, and that my posting style could be better, but when someone posts something that I find to be untrue, I will question it in public. If it was posted in public, it is prepared to be discussed in public in my mind. And if something is later found to be untrue, then it can make the whole movement and ML look extremely foolish. As someone who has a bit of an inside view, that's not true. Everything is taken with a grain of salt, especially when it's claimed to be inside info that isn't supposed to leak out. If I were Brian Clayton, I'd be careful about what I said to someone, even a friend, who I knew was going to turn around and post it publicly.
ML is passionate, driven, and tends to be a little loud about her opinions. She also is quick to leaping without looking as a result of that. She doesn't represent the entire movement by herself -- even though to outsiders it may appear that way because of sheer post volume. What she says isn't taken as gospel beyond question, by any means.
Also, dissenting opinions are welcome so long as they are constructive and don't degenerate into petty bickering. Tony's made that clear a couple times, including asking some of the more rabid supporters to back off.
The Titan forums have always been relatively quiet, so the sudden explosion in traffic is taking some time to get used to. We've never really had to moderate anything other than spammers before -- all I can I ask is for people to be patient while we try to find the right balance.
If anything, if ML just took a few seconds to *think* about she is saying (especially in an opening statement, or an introduction of "facts", and had evidence to hand to back up a lot of them), I would be more amenable to her.
Red names follow her for updates on how the negotiations are going? That is great. It is one thing that I *am* willing to believe her on (with an extreme pinch of salt. To be honest, it is hard to pick up evidence either way without having an ear in the room).
The rest though... which i have picked up on, and pointed out in the relevant threads over on the Titan Forums, she seemed to be very defensive about her stance, and not willing to be proven wrong (or that instead a better phrasing would have been better in the initial statement).
Sure, this is her method of saving face, but surely it wouldn't take much for her to admit that she was incorrect, or that something should only be posted as "hearsay", especially if she is unable or unwilling to back it up. -
Quote:Fair enough, and as i have stated, I *DO* support the *goal* of Titan Networks. Their methods, not so much.Well, I don't know. Maybe you can make the Titan Network and ML's redname friends stop and listen to reason, if you just keep flinging poo at them. Never give up! Heroes never quit!
That was sarcasm. This isn't: do more and do better to save City of Heroes than the Titan Network has done and is doing, and I'll jump ship in an instant. My respect, loyalty and cooperation will be yours to beckon. Until then, I can't take you seriously.
I have been doing my bit, to spread the word about the game, among my friends and family. Unfortunately, I am not made of money, so being able to buy capes/masks to spend (especially in this tight economy, and after already going to the EU CoX player meet, where stuff was said/discussed already).
*shrugs*
Different strokes for different folks.
((Side note: And to be fair, I would find it hard to match the momentum/background of TonyV and the titan networks... especially in this environment, where he already had the backing of *many* players. One day 1, he already had a practically insurmountable advantage.. which is all his to lose. If he does screw up though, I am sure that will be the time for someone else to pick up the mantle. Starting something similar now? Splitting of effective resources)). -
Quote:To be fair, it was because the publishers (Simon & Schuster Interactive) stopped trading, so that made it *ALOT* easier for them to get their rights back to self publish the game.No one has been asking NCSoft to keep the game running, we've been trying to get them to sell it to another publisher or studio (the most optimal solution is selling it to Paragon Studios and letting them be their own studio, in the same way that CCP was allowed to split off and buy EVE from Simon & Schuster years ago and became their own studio and publisher). This is a HUGE distinction that people shouldn't be confused about this late in the process (especially because it might lead to other people being confused about it, too). There are ZERO efforts aimed at getting NCSoft to keep running the game.
What you're suggesting about US buying the game has already been discussed, a lot, here and on the Titan Network. Our ability to crowd-fund several million dollars has been a sticking point in every discussion.
Which is different to what is happening here. -
Quote:So i guess you never saw my posts up there questioning ML/VV about her statements? If you register over there, the first thing you ought to prepare yourself for is nothing, absolutely nothing being about you. Bear in mind, all of the chitter chatter about ML is happening here, not there.
Over there, they're all concerned with saving City of Heroes. I read up over there every day, and that's all I see.
Infact, I have questioned her sources/evidence in *each* of the threads where she has opened her mouth and said something untrue/unbelievable.
Sure, I don't do it all the time, but when something is presented as *horribly* incorrect or dubious, I tend to question it.
Quote:So going in there and being yourself will probably not go over well if you're not dedicated to the united effort to save City of Heroes. If you try to engage anyone in a protracted debate over personality issues and conflicts, you'll be shut down and good riddance in my opinion. We already have a place for petty bickering. These forums. (Which have never been heavily moderated enough in my opinion.)
Hell, there was a [urlhttp://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,5259.0.html]forum thread[/url] over there complaining about the inaccuracy of the Toms Hardware article. Shame that there was stuff that was being said in that thread that was incorrect and that I tried to correct. The response? Fishing for reasons that *might* be valid, and with no evidence to back it up.
If i came up and said something with *no* evidence to back me up, I would be eviscerated.
ML, you believe everything that she says, even when there is evidence against her. In fact, you still believe her when she has *no* corroborating evidence.
That is something that I would expect from a two bit operation. -
Quote:At the start, to be fair, I was a ML backer (even though I hadn't heard of her at the start, I googled her up, and found out who she was). So I thought "Great, here is at least a known name supporting us".hat's all. Closing your ears based on a couple times she was wrong about a couple of details early on, it just seems petty at this point, now that we know she's closer to the devs ears and mouths than most of us are. If you want to take the discussion there, great, here's your Internet winner trophy, I'm not having it.
BUT, and here is the but...
This was up until last week, where she started stating incorrect things. And unfortunately, the lack of correcting facts from her end (CoX being the 1st MMO that NCsoft have given refunds for is untrue), being evasive as to where she has gotten the information from (concerning the finances and that PS was making $800K/month profit) and some *totally* unsupportable statements (the forums being closed on September 1st) *really* doesn't make me a believer in her any more.
Yes, all 3 of those incidents have been since 18th September.
Being incorrect in details early on? Since when has *almost 3 weeks after the initial announcement* been early on?
As I have said, I *believed* that she had the developers ear, in fact I do still believe that they talk to her , BUT unfortunately due to her inaccuracies (which I have to admit, I have also seen from some posters in article comment sections), I have lost *all* faith in which she says. Does she relay everything that she says to us correctly? Or is she twisting things around to suit the SaveCOH agenda?
Because she has been incorrect in the past, makes me unsure if to believe what she now says in the future. Sure, an apology for mistakes that she has made so far would help a great deal. It wouldn't make me trust her 100%, but it would at least raise it above the 10% state that I am currently in.
Hell, half the time when we state something on the boards, we commonly get called up for citations.
ML? She gets away with it scott free.
I am not saying that you shouldn't believe what she is saying, but that it is always going to be worthwhile to take a pinch (or dozen) of salt with it (and if possible try to find out where the information is coming from).
And of course, there are always going to be the official announcements which really put the stamp of authority on it. And *THOSE* I still take with a pinch of salt. For as we all well know, freck happens (sometimes). -
I still like the fact that Captain Electric hasn't been able to refute my statements concerning ML and that she has been incorrect in the past (or unable to back up her statements), which is why I am unable to believe her in general.
I have my own reasons (which rather unsurprisingly has nothing to do with what she has said), as to why I believe that talks might still be in progress.
But, I don't expect to hear anything saying yay or nay concerning them, unless CoX is released from NCsoft's grasp (which will confirm my belief in that the talks were happening).
If it doesn't, then I will just have to believe that the talks broke down/were unsuccessful, but i will not ponder as to why they failed. -
Read the rest of what I said. Notice the caveats that I put in. And this announcement only came through today (of at least A red name using her updates as correct information).
However, as i stated, there have been a couple of other incidents where she has been unable to back up her statements.
Hell, here is another example:
Quote:Au contraire. You are talking apples and wingnuts here.
In fact, this is a win. In the past, all that NCSoft offered was "free game and game time on another of our games" rather than a real REFUND.
I think we can say they finally blinked.
That's the apples. The wingnuts is negotiations to purchase by Paragon Studios. NOTHING in this post says that those negotiations are over. In fact, as a PAID EMPLOYEE of NCSoft, Andy could not possibly reveal anything about those negotiations.
All this says is "neener neener NCSoft might have blinked, but we are not going to keep the game alive." So what? We don't WANT them to keep the game alive only to kill it down the road. We want someone else who loves this game to keep it alive, growing and vibrant.
This is also a psychological ploy on the part of NCSoft to discourage us from keeping up our pressure on them. They WANT us to be defeatist (and they obviously succeeded in your case). If anything, we need to put MORE pressure on them--to sell.
This was also incorrect, as proven by the EU Tabula Rasa website (link courtesy of webarchive):

So, she is *not* perfect, she does get things wrong.
And this is why, more than anything else, I would like (when asked) for evidence to back up her statements, especially when I *KNOW* that they are incorrect.
