  1. Well said, Umbral. Agreed.

The game belongs to the Devs. They can do with it as they please. We pay them money to rent the game from them. It's within their best interest to make choices that will increase the number of rentors rather than decrease that number, so players do have some effect upon it, but the game is not, nor will it ever be, the players'.

    [/ QUOTE ]

This is an economically focused answer, and while not inaccurate, there are other legitimate perspectives.

    Try this...

No artist exists in a vacuum. Those who create must have an audience. That audience can form a loyal following and maintain a constant market for the artist's creations. They can turn the artist's creation into modern folklore by adopting the art and extending it i.e. by adding fan created fiction or art. In such a way, loyal audience members can participate in the process of owning and being a part the art. In fact, there are a number of examples of art that have expanded so far beyond their creators that they have become integral parts of our greater pop culture for example: Star Trek, Superman, Star Wars, Harry Potter, the works of Andy Warhol, and the music of Queen.

So, in a strictly economic sense, the game legally belongs to the company and developers who created it, but in a greater cultural sense, the game belongs to all of us and needs us to thrive.

    Too much?

    Holy Cow!

    A bad tatoo thread?

    Brilliant!
  4. Ok, so maybe I'm comparing it too much to Fulcrum Shift (I play a number of Kineticists).

    Any suggestions on slotting?
  5. Ok, so what am I missing about Heat Loss in the Cold Domination set. I've got a level 42 Cold/Ice defender with Aim and Power Boost. The power is slotted with two accuracies and three recharges, and I am really unimpressed with it.

Anyone skipped this power and not regretted it?

The Urban Dictionary's definition of "Altoholic"

Seems there's a bit of discrepancy in the definition. Maybe it might help to develop a contrasting view.

What's the opposite of an "altoholic" and what would you call such a person?

[/ QUOTE ]Someone who focuses exclusively on one or two characters (in the case of two, generally one from each side). The term for them is Mainalomaniac.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Hahahha! I like it. I lean more towards the altoholic side of the scale myself, but not so much that I haven't leveled a few toons to 50. I enjoy playing different kinds of toons, but I also like achieving the pinnacle of character growth.

Would save those poor, farming, powergamin' peeps all the time and trouble of whipping through AE missions in Atlas, in their attempts to get as many toons to 50 as fast as possible in their quest to find the "perfect build". Hopefully then, these people will become extremely bored and excel at obtaining day job badges.

The Win Game Now Button has been suggested MANY times by people, including myself. I, personally, think it would be a brilliant idea, but it will never happen. It just won't.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Smashing idea, old boy. I'd be in favor of it just as long as each player who chose to hit that button would have a permanent gold name of WANKORZ over his/her head.

Lame.. Everyone is lazy. Why do work and learn to play a character, when you can be spoon fed XP and have no freaking idea how to play?

    [/ QUOTE ]
    Yes!

    [ QUOTE ]
I can learn how to play a toon by just doing MA stuff, but it is more difficult to tell how effective you are when you are lvl 5 teamed up with a bunch of 50's killing things faster than you can guage your powers.

This may fall short of my standard of concrete fact, but it is IMHO the most reasonable explanation of why they would spend a lot of time and energy building an alternative supply chain when they already had a perfectly viable one in place.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Try this for an different explanation for why alternate supply chains were devised for aspects of the game:

Perhaps the developers were looking at building a comprehensive peripheral to add to the game. One that provides additional rewards beyond experience and the usual drops.

If anything can be learned from the example of PvP, it is that adding a peripheral aspect to an existing game without any tangible rewards won't draw players to that aspect.

Adding a merit system to TF/SFs/story arcs and ticket rewards to MA enriches those different aspects of the game, so players can exercise greater choices in how they play the game. I don't believe the "market is the game." It is a peripheral aspect of the game that players can choose to particpate in. If the developers are guilty of anything, it is failing to ascertain the many different effects that one peripheral would have on other peripherals i.e. the effects merits and tickets would have on the market.

While complaining about the dev's decisions and decrying DOOM has become popular sport, it is far from the objective reality. Continuing to add rich peripherals to the already established game makes good business sense for a company trying to stay alive in a very competitive MMO market.
  14. Fair enough. After a second look, I can see that you make some sufficiently backed statements until you said this:

    [ QUOTE ]
That they added merits and tickets at all to appease the crybabies and entitlement cases is a travesty...

    [/ QUOTE ]

If this is factual, then what proof is there of it?
  15. Wow, I can't even begin to tell you where you are off track, Goat.

You need to switch to decaf.
  16. To the OP,

Before you invest your time and energies into what seems to be a significant project, I'd say find out more about your target audience. So far in this thread, I've seen players described as either marketeers, casual players or market-haters.

That seems rather simplified. I believe that each CoX player uses the market system to some varying degree. There must be very few market-haters who have not been inside a Wentworths to sell a valuable recipe or salvage.

So, maybe you can approach this project from the perspective of identifying different levels of players' involvement in the market and focus your advice on how each player can successfully increase his/her involvement in the market.

    For Example:

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    * You are a Level 1 Market Player if your goal is to keep things simple and use the market only to sell off the recipes and salvage you receive in order to generate more money.

At this level of market play, you can do a number of things to keep things simple and generate more money...

** You are a Level 2 Market Player if you use the market to buy items to improve your character and sell off the recipes and salvage you receive in order to generate more money which can be used to buy more items.

At this level of market play, you can do a number of things to cheaply buy items to improve your character and sell other items for a better return...
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If novices to the market can identify which category they are, then your advice to them can be much more specific making it much more useful, I believe, than a generic bunch of FAQs.

This character is to be my main on Virtue (which I've recently fell in love with due to the activity and role-playing aspect)

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'm going to try and tip-toe around this point delicately, but like any good Stone tanker knows...there's nothing delicate about being Rooted.

I bet you will be ok tanking on Virtue with a concept driven toon that may not be maximized. From my experiences tanking on Virtue, that community is much more friendly to the idea especially if you are a good roleplayer. That will also be more significant if you get yourself into a regular group of players who know your backstory and work with it.

Were you to tank on any other server, you'd be held to a different standard. From my experiences tanking on Freedom, Justice, Champion, I can say that, in a very general sense, players on those servers care less about character concepts and roleplaying and expect tanks to be maximized for damage mitigation and aggro management.

  21. There's a MA example here:

How many stars would you rate an MA mission with one mission on a small map and 8 AVs all placed in the final room?

And this is precisely why I haven't bothered with the LRSF since it was introduced.

It is broken. It is horribly designed.

Worst designing in this game. Sheer crap. It's from the old school of "harder is gooder" where a dungeon master would get pissed off at his player characters for breaking "his" game and then make this unkillable monster to teach the players a lesson.
