  1. Have you tried rad blast yet?

I'd highly recommend rad/mm. Or if you want more AoE, rad/fire.
  2. Fury Flechette

    A thank you

  3. Some adjustments. Still not fully soft capped on all positions, but was able to significantly raise ranged defense without altering power picks or gimping powers.

It makes a much bigger difference at the high end game. When you're starting out, sell it and buy IOs you need or use it as slush fund to start your character's marketeering. I have it slotted out of some scrapper builds which uses it to reliably hit +4s and over. However, that's really the only time it comes in handy. Against lesser enemies, it's very easy to accumulate lots of accuracy bonuses.

    A thank you

    Thanks for the compliment.

It always seemed amazing to me that we get posters in here that accuse of outright greed, deluge us with their unworkable ideas about how to "fix" the market, or best yet accuse us of organizing some sort of secret cabal which manipulates the market to keep the little guy downtrodden.

It's this sort of tinfoil hat extremism that made me undertake the 7 days experiment in the first place. Largely, because my experiences with the market were so completely different from what people were claiming theirs were like. The experiment really never was intended as a guide, and I continue to be highly flattered that many continue to think it is.

The attitude of the folks in this forum (me included) is not one of exclusion but of inclusion: I'm hoping that with the constant barrage of testimony like yours, that one day one of the naysayers will pause for a second and cross the line to join our not so-exclusive circle.

EDIT: Looks like I'll have to either repost the Market Journal to either the Player Guides sections, have the mods move it over there or perhaps maybe campaign to have it made a sticky.
  8. Archie,

You should post the official top hat and monocle I am ebil screenshot. Since you've now officially joined the club, you're entitled.

  9. Fire/Shield's endurance issues can be kept under control. The biggest killer in a farming scenario is actually FSC since a lot of folks slot it with 6 Obliterations for both the recharge and the melee bonus. If you slot it something a lot more endurance friendly (Sciroccos, Multi-Strikes, purple set), you can keep your endurance under control. Fireball can also eat up a lot of end as well too, but as long as you slot a decent amount of end redx, it isn't an issue.

The technique works for a lot of recipes not just the ones I've used as examples. In fact, here's a recent example of the principles in action: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=231833

The poster there made 2B in 5 days, 8 hours.

It's also been repeatedly shown that even after every marketeering technique has been revealed, they still work because a) only a small portion of the gaming community reads the forums b) only a smaller subset of those readers bother to apply what they read c) there are a vast quantity of niches, many that are still untapped.
  11. Grats, Archie! That's very fast. And I'll admit that it's faster than I've ever done it for the simple reason that I usually spend more time offline during trades.

Now that you set the benchmark, it would be interesting to see someone beat 5 days 8 hours 36 minutes.

    Opinions?
I think it's way too connected to the DC Comics character. Even if you made the character a huge male with bunny ears, you'd still probably be petitioned for the name. There's probably a good reason why that name has been unclaimed.

Also the names you have above have a lot possible variants

    Ultra Girl : Ultravixen
    Ultima Girl : Ultimatress
    Omega Girl: Girl Omega
    Mega Girl: Mega Lass
    Sensational Girl: Zenzation (purposely mispelled)
    Dream Girl: Dreamstress
    Amazing Girl: Amazing Lass
    Neat Girl: Neat and Plain
Great Girl: Muchacha Fuerte or Chica Grande (Spanish)
Smashing Girl: Girl with Big Hammer

You can make as much but not nearly as fast. And certainly not as efficiently. You'd have to spent hours upon hours farming. Marketeering relies on purchases made offline to build wealth.

I've done both and marketeering beats farming hands down. With that said, doing both in concert is faster than one alone. However, I lost patience for farming long ago even though I have several completed purpled out/PvP-IO'ed builds that can do it as efficiently as anyone would care to.
  15. Yup. It's especially discouraging sometimes in office maps, where if you see a set of branching corridors right in front of you with enemies right in the intersection, you know there's an elevator to the right after a turn, a dead end to the front preceded by stairs and another dead to the left after another turn.

Is this correct or does a dual build have to be powers from the same branch?
Fortunatas and Night Widows are variants of the same AT. And yes, you can have a dual build with one build being a Fortunata and the other a Night Widow.
  17. Day 14: Meaningful Sets At Last!

It's been at least a week since I was in game, largely due to work and RL pressures. Today was the first chance to have a few hours to my time so I concentrated on getting Fara to level 37 at last. Level 37, as I mentioned before, is significant because it finally allows her to put in some matched IO sets for meaningful bonuses. In Fara's case, level 37 represents the chance to set two full Touch of Death sets.

I worked through Magus Mu'Drakan's story arc and dinged 37 conveniently before the show down with Lilitu, the demoness who's also Infernal's mom. At level 37, Fara now has 30% melee, 38% ranged, 24% AoE for positional defense. I consider 30% a significant benchmark because it's as about as good as what you can get with a non-fighting pool SR scrapper with SOs. Further, a single small purple also gets you to 42.5%, which is more than enough for elite bosses.

A screen shot of Fara's enhancement screen at level 37:

One disappointment was that I was also hoping to six slot Obliterations at level 40. Sadly, the quad (which I was only able to get at level 41) and the Acc/Rech pieces escaped me.

As you can see in the screen shot above, Fara is still using a mix of commons, some frankenslotted attacks and now a couple of full sets. I think a lot of players get this idea in their heads that a character needs full sets to be truly powerful while in reality a character with smart slotting, a mixture of different pieces can be extremely effective.

After slotting the Touch of Deaths, I sent Fara with her final fight with Lilitu. The fight was a let down only because she conned as an even con elite boss. Fara used one purple during the fight and a green when she got mobbed with minions, but it was anti-climatic. I doubted that she needed those at all. However, the fight confirmed that an even-con elite boss wasn't much of a challenge even with minimal inspiration use.

Disappointed with that fight, I continued the Magus Mu'Drakan's and got a surprise elite boss in one of his non-story arced missions: Baphomet. Baphomet due to his incredible regeneration and healing can be quite a pain to take out. Still, while Fara did use some inspirations, she didn't have to resort to a Shivan to take him out.

Overall, I'm very impressed with this Bane at level 37. Some of the things that I expected to happen haven't occured. I expected to be mezzed a lot more but so far, defense and minimal mez protection has largely kept Fara free from holds and stuns. I expected Fara to be knocked back a lot more, but slotting an additional -kb IO early seems to have cut that down considerably. I expected the Bane's offense to be poor and have been quite pleased with the offensive output: quite a bit stronger than a Huntsman or even a Night Widow at the same level.

The parts that did surprise me were the relatively weak AoE, which has been rectified with Venom Grenade and Crowd Control, and the squishiness, which has been mitigated by fighting pool (tough/weave) and hitpoint bonuses.

I like this character far more than either my Fortunata or my Night Widow, and I'll probably take her to the end game at 50.

I heard from a few players that the game changes again for a Bane starting at level 40+. I'm almost there with Fara and will see how it goes when I reach those levels. In particular, I'm told that Carnie Master Illusionist and Arachnos Banes are particularly troublesome. I guess I'll have to see, and I'll definitely look up Vivacious Verandi when I go to St. Martial.

I never really had the patience to study the market and try to use it to turn a profit.

Last Friday, I stumbled across a market guide (Fury Flechette's, I believe) while searching on other topics, and the principles were easy to follow, plus it had a couple of examples to start with. So I decided to give it a shot, and designated an alt as my "market toon". Following the guide, I made almost 120M from Sat to Tues morning just from crafting/selling,which I'm sure is small potatoes to experienced marketeers, but I was pleased.
I'm glad you enjoyed my guide. The answers you seek are actually answered in the longer Market Journal.

    Quote:
The small downside is that I went through a bit of trial and error trying to gauge market demand, resulting in a bunch of unsold inventory. I probably did not factor in the weekend price fluctuations accurately. So my questions are:

    1) Should I just wait to see if they move at my listed prices? And if so how long should I wait? Or just get rid of them at reduced prices, taking a loss on those items?
You'll get different answers from different people, but I go for high turnover, high volume, lower margins. If something doesn't sell within about 3 days (a week tops) then I'll relist. On a weekend however, you can set prices higher and if something doesn't sell within hours, you're probably doing something wrong. During my experiment, I've had to relist stuff a few times, especially when I'm trying to free up a market slot.

    Quote:
    2) Generally speaking, is it better to craft a recipe for an IO that is in lower supply but has a fewer bidders (but still more bids than supply), or one that has many more bidders, but is in higher supply. Is there a certain number/ratio I should look for?
There's no specific ratios that I look for. I look for items that have high turnover, often high number of bidders and lots of sales. I steer away from low supply, high price, few bidder niches generally because while you'll get a big score when it sells, it may be weeks before it does.

    Quote:
    3) Since I'm a beginner, I've stuck to relatively inexpensive recipes/IO's (selling in the 10M-15M range). Is it worth gambling on buying/crafting some big-ticket items, or should I wait and see if get lucky on drops?
Being a beginner has nothing to do with it. It all depends on how much inf you happen to have on hand. Never risk more than you can afford. If you have 120M on hand, targeting niches that are inexpensive is probably a sound strategy. I don't really start bidding on the big stuff until I get far more than that (big stuff = LoTGs, Heal uniques, purples).

Also, it's quite sound to stay with a low margin, high volume strategy. We've had a recent inductee to the ebil marketeering club who made his influence just by selling commons for 200-500k a piece. I've made my billions on the backs of selling crafted IOs for as little as 2M a pop, and I'm far from being bad at this marketeering stuff.

Broadsword is simply my preference for the character due to the models (looks means all right? and I was thinking the fire pwrset as I read somewhere that it's scrapper def pwr that enhances your dmg the most.

So I was just hoping if anyone had any ideas they could tell me if the build is viable at all, and if so which abilities would be musts in such a case?

    Thanks.
It's viable, and parry with a resistance based set works well. However, it's debatable whether or not fire armor is the most offensive secondary. I think consensus is that shield is the most offensive based power set due to Against All Odds (a damage enhancing aura) and Shield Charge.

With that said, shield defense can be a bit daunting to level up for a newer, presumably poorer, player since it takes quite of bit of investment to make strong, while on just SO enhancements, it can seem kind of weak. Fire armor is a bit easier leveling up due to having a reliable self heal.

Neither are bad choices (there's really no bad scrapper choices) and both choices will allow you to play the vast majority of the game content solo.

    Anyway, welcome to the game.

300M is far more than what anti-market, supposed "casual" players will ever see in their whole time playing this game. Even better since you probably only marketed/played a few days out of that 7.

With that, I'll return us to our regularly scheduled scrapper line up.

I don't think it does. The exact opposite can happen too. Just around the same time that Archie started the experiment, the Markets and servers started to get unstable. Would the experiment also be invalid if Archie wasn't able to use the market at all for the first day? I wouldn't think so.

Even on my own experiment, I had to contend with real life work pressures (I had a couple of days during my week where I only managed to log in for 20 mins) and even an ISP problem. You just have to roll with the punches good or bad.

And even if Archie managed to acquire the initial nest egg quickly, it's still going to be a lot of effort to get the rest of it.

EDIT: on a farming toon, the first few million is exceptionally easy to acquire. 10 mins in AE for 1000+ tickets and turning around and converting it to two pieces of rare salvage can instantly net you 4-5M, more than enough to start placing bids.

    DM/Regen
    DM/Shield
    DM/SR
    ElM/Shield

I would like to be able to at least be a blip on the radar in a team setting (even if that means my contribution is only noticed on hard targets or via Fireball). I would eventually like to dabble in AV-soloing, but if some of the tougher AVs are beyond me, that is fine.

Any thoughts or opinions? I was thinking Dark/Shield/Fire is a nice general all-purpose toon, but I could definitely be persuaded otherwise.
Either of your two shield characters probably have the most upside. DM/Shield is a good choice.

With that said, the DM/SR can be soft capped without a lot of investment and be made formidable, and you can do a cheapish build for the other shield character as well too. I have cheaper electric/shield builds here: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=216944
