Is this lame?

So last night I was looking for names for a Heroine and I tried:

Ultra Girl
Ultima Girl
Omega Girl
Mega Girl
Sensational Girl
Dream Girl
Amazing Girl
Neat Girl
Great Girl
Smashing Girl

And a list of other adjectives for a good hour... and then one name took as available.

Super Girl.

Now I know there is a DC character called Supergirl, and we are not allowed to create characters that infringe upon anyones intellectual property. But if the Character looks nothing Like the DC character, shares no similarities in background or concept or powers then I do believe having a character named "Super Girl" who is a girl from Paragon whom happens to be Super Powered would be within the Terms of Service.

At worse someone petitions the name, the character gets generalized and I have to rename them/remake the costume.

But my question to you dear virtueites is this:

Is getting a name like Super Girl amazingly good fortune that should be used to create a solid and unique RP character that takes full advantage of the wonderful canvas and paint that is the of lore and setting of CoX.

Or is it lame because it is far too connected to an iconic Super Hero, and should be sent off to a trial account to wither and die so that we will not see yet another zero creativity knock off hero number 27,473?

Opinions?

I don't think it'll fly, even with the space. There's a reason Super Girl is vacant and would probably quickly becom Generic hero girl 323231124323

Even if it wasn't connected to a DC character, "Super Girl" just seems kinda bland, well, to me at least.

But wait that's not what this thread is about.

I mean, I wouldn't take it, it's probably only available for a reason. i.e. every character its been used by has had to been renamed.

Bland yes, but sometimes its nice to make a pulp style over the top "For justice!" kind of character every now and then.

Personally I am learning to putting the name on a temp account and letting the time run out, to make it disappear forever.

But part of me wonders why the mods haven't just put the name on the blocked list if it is a problem?

I think it's way too connected to the DC Comics character. Even if you made the character a huge male with bunny ears, you'd still probably be petitioned for the name. There's probably a good reason why that name has been unclaimed.

Also the names you have above have a lot possible variants

Ultra Girl : Ultravixen
Ultima Girl : Ultimatress
Omega Girl: Girl Omega
Mega Girl: Mega Lass
Sensational Girl: Zenzation (purposely mispelled)
Dream Girl: Dreamstress
Amazing Girl: Amazing Lass
Neat Girl: Neat and Plain
Great Girl: Muchacha Fuerte or Chica Grande (Spanish)
Smashing Girl: Girl with Big Hammer

Ultra Girl : Ultravixen - Already in Use
Ultima Girl : Ultimatress - Available, and hilarious.
Omega Girl: Girl Omega - Already in use
Mega Girl: Mega Lass - Already in use
Sensational Girl: Zenzation (purposely mispelled) - Available and still mispelled
Dream Girl: Dreamstress - Already in Use
Amazing Girl: Amazing Lass - Already in Use
Neat Girl: Neat and Plain - Available but sounds like laundry detergent
Great Girl: Muchacha Fuerte or Chica Grande (Spanish) - Available but im not a fan of Spanish
Smashing Girl: Girl with Big Hammer - Available but not very punchy

Well I decided to ask a GM, and after two escalations I got the answer that it was far too close to a trademarked character to be allowed.

So I am seeing if the name can be put on a blocked list so that someone else does not inherit the same problem.

I don't get why they don't automatically put generic'ed names on a blocked list anyway. In six plus years of this game's existence, I can't imagine you're the first person to try the name Super Girl.

I've had one name generic'ed, not for trademark reasons, but because it was, I guess, potentially offensive. Funny thing is, it's still available and I could rename that character with that name tomorrow if I wanted. If I were a conspiracy theorist, I'd almost see this as a form of entrapment.

My Legal sense tell me that they don't keep a blocked list on things like this so that they can be seen to be upholding, enforcing and respecting Marvel and DC's trademarks.

Thus should NCSoft ever be taken to court over the same issue they can point to the logs and say "Look, our GM's have genericized X amount of characters in an attempt to uphold our agreement with you."

This would also be why you do not actually get into trouble, or receive any negative marks on your "record" for such violations, you simply get the character genericized.

Although NC does reserve the right to terminate your account for such violations in the ToS, yet on the support page they tell you that you wont get into any serious trouble.

If Marvel tries to bring us to court again, they'll have to do it without fabricating their own evidence. XD

Well, you'd still have to generic names like Supergrrl, Sue Pergirl, Tsoopergirl, etc. It's not like they leave the names Batman, Wolverine and Wonder Woman available just so they can generic them later.

There's also the costume violations - a person's charcter might be called Invincible Lass, but if she looks like Supergirl - bang, generic'ed.

Besides, I think showing that you are proactive by blocking names would look better in a court of law than showing that you react when someone has already violated a trademark.

Been itching to roll something new, something morally malleable for Going Rogue. I'm taking her out for a spin as a Praetorian elec/rad controller.

To mix things up a bit, I will now choose,
Iambic pentameter will be used.
For what I posted in the past won't fit,
So I will type in style for a bit.

What you have chosen is extremely lame,
In my opinion, find a better name.
Something like "Ultra Lass", not "Ultra Girl",
To be unique is good, give it a whirl.

Several names like "Super Girl" aren't so good,
And infringe upon copyright it could,
So think up a name that better suits you,
And let your superhero dreams come true.

You don't have to be the king of naming,
But to enjoy the good art of gaming,
Try being creative once a while,
And from many folks you'll earn a smile.

This has been a short poem from MondoCool,
Take my advice, and don't act like a fool.
For if your name is weak and not so hot,
Your toon will only be laughed at a lot.

Super Girl is too generic. One reason why I was never a fan of Super Man. So hes a hero why is he super? Oh wow he can fly and run fast and has buns of steel. Big freaking deal. At least Batman was mildly interesting even without the super powers.

Sometimes, generic names are nice. I'd rather have "Super Girl" than "Darkheart Angstsoul" or whatever kids come up with nowadays.

You have a point.

Also Smashing Girl makes me think of a hero dressed in a Union Jack outfit with a thick Cockney accent. xD

Thank you for the effort and creativity placed into such verse even if it was somewhat insulting, as if to say have never been creative in all my time playing City of, and I don't have a vault of 50's from the past 6 years all of which I spent days and sometimes weeks picking out the right name, costume and power sets for the theme or vision I had in mind. Nor become so attached to some of those unique creations and the RP surrounding them, that I have spent hundreds of dollars in commissioning pieces of artwork for them.

I am sure you intended your post to be fun, funny and something a little different so that is the spirit in which I will take it.
