  1. I am also using an 8800GT (XFX model) and I don't have any thermal problems. Just finished playing for an hour and my GPU temp is 51C.

In case it hasn't been suggested yet, turn off your computer, open the side cover and make sure there is no dust in the GPU's fan area (use a can of compressed air and blow it out). I do that every 6 months and I am surprised at the amount of dust that gathers there. This affects thermal efficiency resulting in higher temperatures.

Next... again, if not already asked, make sure you are not running CUDA based applications while you play (SETI@Home, etc.) as they push your GPU to the limit!

    Windows 7

FWIW, I migrated from Vista Business x86 to Windows 7 Professional x86 and both CoX and CO work just fine. As a matter of fact, they "seem" to run a bit faster in Windows 7... but that could be because Windows 7 is a fresh installation ;-)

No, no, NO! Setting the FPS to 15,000 will melt the card. 60 FPS is too cold for that ;-)

    Intel Core i7?

How exactly "does" a quad core work with CoH anyway? Does it only use two of the cores?

    Then a question on numbers!
If a Core 2 Duo core has a speed of 2.5GHz, does that mean there are two 2.5's ... equal to 5GHz, all usable by CoH?

Then does that mean i7's with a speed of say, 1.6GHz, have a total of 6.4GHz, of which CoH only uses 3.2? ... or is that the formula for Quads? Then what would be the formula for i7's?

Overall, should I invest in an i7? Or is a Core good enough if CoH is really the only game I play? ... (This is for a laptop by the way, of which I don't own ... trying to make a decision before Black Friday )

P.S. sorry for the frantic-ness, but I'm just so confused!

As far as I am aware, CoX supports up to two threads (dual core). Thus on a 4-core system like mine, two are used for CoX and the remaining 2 for other chores.

2x @ 2.5 GHz does NOT equal 5.0 GHz. Each thread can run up to 2.5 GHz (assuming you did not overclock your system).

4x @ 1.6 GHz does NOT equal 6.4 GHz. Each thread can run up to 1.6 GHz. As a matter of fact a 1.6 GHz quad core is technically slower than a 2.6 GHz dual-core while running CoX. If your application support four threads, then the slower quad-core has an advantage.

The i7 is certainly good enough to play CoX. An i7 laptop is more pricey but more powerful. One key item is the video support in your laptop. If it's the buil-in chipset then you will not like the results. Try to get one with the add-on nVidia or ATI mobile graphics cards.
  5. I have been around for more than 60 months now and until recently, CoX was practically the only MMO game I was playing. However, the game was getting stale (see below) so I jumped on the Champions Online bandwagon. I must admit that I have been playing more over there than on CoX. Now back to the reason for this post...

    Why I use FARMING missions:

Whenever I start a new toon, I have to go through the same base play as when I started the game years ago. Hence, I do farm a lot to bring my new toons to the 20+ level where gaming becomes more interesting.

    Suggestion:

    1. Offer a "fast track" for veteran users (36 months+ ???). In other words, perform a more complex mission and jump 5-10 levels w/all of the perks.
    2. Change the low-level missions so that they are different than what we started with.

Granted, there have always been updates but lets face it, starting a new toon on say CoV, has you go through the same low level missions, fighting the same opponents, etc. All I want to do is move up past 20 very fast, hence farming missions.

    Sidebar:

Is CO better? IMHO, let's say that it's different and newer (read: totally different content).

I still like CoX and although I know several friends who recently dropped their long time subscriptions to CoX for CO, I decided to keep both as I can afford to do so. Game play wise, I see myself on CO over CoX by a 4:1 ratio. I am hoping that "Going Rogue" will bring new interesting content and gameplay.
  6. Had the same problem since FF 3.5 series. Solved it by removing Coloris. Now this occurred in parallel to the FF 3.5.3 update. I will check to see if there is any correlation.

I agree that it's easier to find teams on Freedom. I am on three servers: Guardian, Freedom and Liberty. It's not that easy on Guardian and Liberty.

Now I would move my toons to Freedom but I am unwilling to pay the price to do so (it's a game). This is where Champions Online uses a different approach... same server but multiple areas. This means I can select busy places which will facilitate team building. In CoX, if you are Guardian and there are few users, then tough luck!
  8. Operating System (Vista, XP, OS X version): Vista Business x86 SP2
    Browser: Firefox 3.5.2
    Forum: All
Bug Description: Doesn't keep you logged-in
    Link to Forum Post: n/a

Simply out, if I use IE8, I remain logged-in. However, if I use FF 3.5.2, I can log-in, but it never sticks. The next time I visit the forum, I need to relog.
  9. I have been consistently around since the beta days and I also noticed that with the introduction of AE, farming has become more predominant. Now I will not say that I don't farm as I would be lying (see note below). However, farming is not the main reason I play. In AE, I often try to join or create teams where I state that they are for non-farming missions. Do I get takers? Yes... but depending on the server, it is sometimes pretty hard to build a full non-farming team.

(Note: Why do I farm? First, don't rely on the number of posts I make as I am more a lurker than a talker. I have been around for over 60 months and I have numerous toons. I have played with practically every aspect of the game. When I start a new toon, I am now interested in playing it at the higher levels (heck, why do I need to go through the same storylines over and over). So at times I farm to get past 20-25 faster. Although new features are added with each release, the core game is pretty much the same. This is probably why I have started to play Champions Online as it offers new challenges and a fresh start. However, I am not dropping CoX... at least for now. I am betting a lot on Going Rogue, hoping that it will freshen-up the content.)
  10. I can also confirm this problem. I had to revert to IE or Google Chrome as FF 3.5 didn't let me log in properly.

So My question at least for Heroes Can I go max settings with a 9800?

    [/ QUOTE ]

I run CoX at max settings with a 8800GT and the frame rate is excellent. So the 9800 should be just fine. However, I wonder if your Celeron processor will not be the choke point (limiting factor)? CoX is CPU intensive.

If I were buying a new video card today, I would go for nVidia's 200 series... the GTX 275 is a good buy these days. However, I would not move to that if I was running a single core processor such as your Celeron.
  12. Old? I am using an 8800GT and I have great frame rates with everything at max. Granted, your 8800 is one generation older but it should not be a problem with a game like CoH/V. I have a friend who is using that card and he has no problems whatsoever with the frame rate. I recall reading that CoH/V relies more on the CPU than on the GPU.

This being said, DO blow out any dust from the GPU. I do this at least three times a year and there is a LOT of dust in there. That equates to overheating and poor performance.
  13. I know it has been discussed before but I can't find a direct answer to the following: Does COH/V benefit from all four cores or is it limited to only 2 cores?

I run calculation intensive items in background and I used to suspend them while playing on a 2-core computer. Now that I have a quad core system, I wonder if I still need to do this or just let my background app run in two cores as long as COH/V only requires 2?

I'm not disappointed with the way in-game ads haven't taken off. Please see my sig.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yup... saw your sig. However, you are still advertising your ARCs. So capitalism does have its advantages
  15. I remember seeing one advertisement several months ago. However, since then, I see nothing even though I have set adverts ON. Perhaps the economy is just so bad that no one is ready to advertise inside a game? Why don't we see adverts for Going Rogue? Or other NC Soft games? Just curious ;-)

  17. How do you navigate to map coordinates? I could not find anything in CoX which would display the map coordinates. For example, coordinates "828,0 -21.0, 2380.0" in Founder's Falls is where you should find the "Chaotician Badge". How do you get there? Coordinates listed above came from the CoH manual (yes, I have the CoV and CoH manuals)

Funny you should say that. The first thing I thought about when I saw the logo was Homestar Runner

I loved it! I was Frost Hermit, an Ice/Storm Controller. I wasn't killing anyone, but boy did villains hate it when I was around!

I would lay down an ice patch, throw out freezing rain, and then herd them up with hurricane. I feel so evil, but it's for the forces of good!

Gale was a highlight of my evening. Pesky MM's pets bothering you? Gale! They're not anymore! Oh man, I must've been seriously annoying the other side. Putting random villains on follow with Hurricane and Artic Air is another source of joy.

I wish we could do it again.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Good for you ;-)

I liked it but my experience was totally ruined by the severe lag. I am a Stalker in CoV and getting up close and personnal was practically impossible due to the incredible lag.

I hope that what we saw was due to the large amount of users and to "beta" on the servers. If PvP in CoV is going to be like that, then it will not see me very often.

Oh, by the way, my system is a P4-2GHz w/1GB, Windows XP SP2, nVIDIA GEFORCE 6200 OC w/256MB & current drivers, and an HSI cable modem connection. I played the PvP with almost everything turned off. I know that my system is not a barn stormer, but it should be OK.
  20. I have been playing CoH for quite a while now. I pay my monthly bill, don't make a fuss, didn't power level any character (ok, maybe a bit during the snowman-fest) and just like to de-stress and have some on-line fun. I solo a lot and up to now, I managed to move up the ladder, slowly but surely.

Now, this immense nerf called ED... why? Why should my 6-slotted toons have to be penalized? Yes, I 6-slotted damage, after all, I am a blaster. Damage is my only hope for survival. Now you tell me that I will be penalized...

Once again, you are removing some of my pleasure, a pleasure that I am paying every month for.

Now I do not expect that this pathetic message will change anything, however, I had to vent a bit as this super-nerf really frustrated me.

Will I adapt? I suppose so. Will I play CoV? I suppose so. However, if I lose interest, then you lose me (and how many more?)

    Nuf said... time to respec!
