Nviida Geforce 8800GT
I had a Giga-Biteme 256M 8800GT and recently retired it.
Under heavy load it would freeze my machine. I set the fan to 100%, used a nice copper Zalman GPU cooler and arctic silver5, made sure it wasn't a heat issue. The only way I could reliably stop this from happening was by lowering the GPU core and memory clocks using either nTune or RivaTuner. For big events with lots of graphics and lag like the Halloween event, it seemed like I had to turn it down even more.
I finally got tired of it and spent $100 on an ATI 4770 and am very happy with it.
We don' need no stinkin' signatures!
Sucks....I thought the 8800GT was a great card. I haven't even had it a year yet. So if I do replace it, which is better....GeForce GTX 260 or the GEFORCE 9800GTX?
I seem to recall nVidia having some issues with overheating on the 8800s shortly after they were released. Whether it's part of that issue or an isolated one, it sounds like you're having similar problems to the 7600 I lost last summer when it started to burn up.
You might want to open your case and ensure the fan on the card is spinning, and that it's not clogged with too much dust. (In my case, a tuft of dog fur got stuck in the fan and kept it from spinning, which led to toasty-town. )

Yeah, there were lots of reports of 8800's going south. Someone on Justice gave a link to a fix that involved putting it in an oven.
I'll see if I can find the link and post it here.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

No problems here with an 8800 GTX and an 8800 GTS. Sorry to hear about your emerging problems, but it is apparently not a universal thing.

I thought it was just mine. I've never had a problem until now, and it's driving me absolutely crazy.
I thought it was a driver issue, so I updated the driver. It didn't work. I then brought a new Hard drive home, installed XP and updates, Video and sound drivers and game. Same thing. Oddly, the 8500 in my older machine is fine.

Another person on CoH just asked me what card to recommend because their 8800GT just died. Looks like Nvidia might have an issue with those cards that they haven't owned up to.
Might be related to the 8600M recall they had to issue.
FWIW, my 8800GTX and GTX280 are running fine, but now my fingers are crossed.
I downloaded fanspeed and it's sating the card is running between 75-85 Celsius. Is that normal?
Then it's time for them to get off the cross, use the wood to build a bridge, and get over it.

Well, about 8 months ago I upgraded for a 7600 of some description to a BFG 9800GT OCX, and I couldn't believe how nice and shiney the game looked with the settings maxed out. Have been running that ever since without a problem. But then, if money is no object for you, I'm sure a GTX 260 would be even better!

NVidia had some major problems with the drivers some time ago - they basically ended up reducing fan speed as the card ran hotter. Resulting in the card crashing - you either ended up with a black screen or the PC would reset - assuming you hadn't disabled the shutdown on overheating settings.
I was under the impression the last several driver releases had resolved that though.
My 8800 GTS runs about 45 degrees under load even on overclocked settings so if you're seeing 80+ I'd certainly recommend checking the fan settings.

Thanks Gaia. I'll lookinto that when I get home. Blackscreen and rebooting is exactly what I'm getting. I tried to use the program fanspeed yesterday to manually turn the fan on high to no avail, but I'm sure I can figure it out.

So I took the side panel off my rig and set a rather large fan right next to it....attempting to cool things down. Even doing this, I can't get my 8800GT temp below 50 celcius. Everything else stays around 30, but the card stays between 53-80. When I try to open the game it immediatly jumps to 75-80 degees celcius....even with this big fan blowing directly on it. I can't get the fanspeed program to do much besides tell me the temps. Can't seem to manually control any of the fans in the computer.
I was looking into getting a new Vid Card as well, I spoke with a buddy of mine, he and his wife both play Aion (if that matters to you). He suggested the GTX260 CORE 216 not to be confused with the CORE 192. You'd have to read up on some reviews to know the exact issue between the 2 cores.

He also mentioned that for the GTX260 price compared to the GTX275 and up you get very similar quality and performance for a few bucks less. If you are price conscious the GTX260 would be the better deal.

Probably go with the GTX260....just worried I'll get it and then find out the problem isnt the graphix card
Well, if money is no object, a GTX 295 would be even betteer than the GTX 260. And if money is really no object, run two of them in SLI mode.

Multi GPU cards and SLI mode won't give any performance boost to CoX until Ultra debuts (I hope it will boost performance in Ultra anyhow).

Those reviews don't look too promising

Took a dump after about a month![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pros: Fast Shipping Cons: When I first purchased this card, it worked ok. Occasionally the screen would go blank while playing Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Today, after almost a month of having the card, the card took a dump. It displayed matrices and garbage on the screen. Other Thoughts: I would enjoy it more if it would not have stopped working. |

Should asked/said prior to posting about the card.
Have you defragged your dirve(s) recently?
Cleared all Temp files?
Updated drivers to latest version, but first uninstalling previous drivers? Used Driver Cleaner?
Installed/updated any new Applications, Anti-Virus, Windows updates?
After you opened your case to install the vidcard or whatever, accidentally knocked something kinda loose?
Double check to make sure your RAM, Vid Card, Sound Card is seating correctly.
Make sure all internal connectors (IDE/SATA) Cables are fully plugged in.
Dust out the machine?
Disconnect nonessential components from computer, IPod, External Drives, Camera, Headsets etc etc.

I respect your opinion Vega and when I get the card in the next few weeks I will let you all know if it worth it or not.

Yes, I'm sure it's the card and to each his own. But some of the negatives are just out of place.

Well, thats a case issue and an issue with Dell XPS, I have the same computer and I can't shut the case cause it starts overheat causing the case fans to spin out of control, It also sounds like a vacuum cleaner or a small jet. The card is just too big and there's not enough air flow even with 2 extra fans. So this issue is consistent with my video card too an GeForce 7950 GX2. DX10/11, Windows 7 and Vista are the only 2 who support DX10/11, unless you are running 7 or Vista and want the extra hot sauce for your games, you should probably be looking for a better card ![]() |

Learn to read Pum. Nothing in my comment said anything about performance. My comment was strictly related to the "if money is no object" portion of the statements.

Your original statement of "would be better" comes with an implicit thesis that it should perform better rather than just burning cash. Besides, if you were looking for the ultimate in CoX performance right now, a single GTX285 OC would outperform a GTX 295 anyhow (aside from a 5870, which has driver issues in CoX).

I'm wondering if anyone else is having problems crashing with Nvidia cards? I ran this game at max settings for about 2 years with no problems, then about 3 months ago I started freezing up and crashing. I forget the exact message I was getting, but it said something about a loop error with the video card. I messed around with my settings, lowering a few things....and it seemed to solve the problem.
Fast forward a few months. I played a couple weeks ago during the Halloween event with no problems. Then this morning I bought the new Booster pack and logged in to check it out. Within 30 seconds of the load screen I freeze up completely. Can't close the program, can't even move my mouse. Tried entering in safe mode and it crashed before the game even opened fully.
I'm using the 191.07 driver, which I believe is the most recent. Anyone else sharing my pain? Thanks.
