So you can actually be a VIP Player and still have a white name.
While that's true, clicking on her name doesn't give PMing her as a selection which only appears if you are VIP.
  5. Dang, forgot to check this. Sadly the pages are actually pictures so you can't simply search for which manufacturer is behind which models via the browser.

I do agree with the premise of having a choice between an offensive and defensive power as your first choice. But the idea of cherry picking just the "defensive" powers bothers me.

From my point of view excluding the 4 travel power pools and Concealment (because who doesn't want to be invisible, on purpose), the other sets were for granting powers to ATs that normally wouldn't have such abilities.

Leadership is about team buffing, like what some Defenders and Controllers could do. Presence is taunting foes and soft control, like Tankers, Scrappers and Controllers. Medicine to help heal your teammates when you don't have any healing powers via your main sets, again like Defenders and Controllers. Fighting was to give players something better than just Brawl, back when Brawl actually used endurance, and some damage resist or defense that Scrappers and Tankers had. And since we are talking about the old days, Fitness gave movement bonuses and HP/End regen ability that was only available at the time to regen Scrappers.

It was all about a way to dabble in types of powers that other ATs had in spades. It was also a way to flavor up your character so it's more unique. The Ancillary Power Pools even more so since they are more AT unique.

That's my take. Maybe it's based on something I read in the old CoH guide from Prima back from the old days.
  7. But the same is true in the Medicine set. I have a tanker with a metric load of HPs, I want Aid Self because I frequently solo and I prefer to have a way to heal quickly without resorting to making myself vulnerable with Rest or wait a long time to naturally heal. This was when I was under 20 way back in 2004. Hoarfrost is good but takes too long to recharge and I prefer to have it available in combat. So I'm forced to take an ally only power and I came up with a way to logically explain why I have these other powers even though I rarely use them. I mean who asks a Tanker to heal them?

The point is a lot of pool powers are arranged so you are forced to take something you don't want to take something you do. Fact of life. You want to take Human Sexuality as your humanities elective, you're forced to take Psych 101 first. I don't see a difference.

I'm sorry I lumped you in with the min/maxers but I feel the game is starting to go their way. For me it's like going down to the rec department to play a pick up game of basketball and now to many players are taking it way too seriously to make it enjoyable for me anymore. I'm looking for a little exercise, not elbows to my head or getting in my face because of a bad pass or shot. It's suppose to be Happy Fun Time Games.
  8. I will assume night vision but their really wasn't anytime in the movie they could go to "Selina-vision". At some point the general public should realize that if a character is wearing something over their eyes in a dark room that it's some kind of night vision without resorting to having to show the view a first person shot showing night vision.

I'm assuming you mean 'defense' as in 'mitigation and mez protection,' not as in Defense ...
Yes I did mean defense in the general term of damage mitigation and mez prevention, the opposite of offense which itself is a damage mitigator of sorts.

Personally I gave up even looking at the fighting pool back in 2004 once I found out how weak boxing and kick was. Still I can see the logic in providing one offensive and one defensive skill as the initial choice.

However it bothers me at a fundamental level that players are starting to design their characters not on concept but by what powers they could take, slot but never use just to softcap their defense or make Hasten perm once again. Which I consider silly since once you add that much global recharge you've exceeded what perma-Hasten originally bought you so now you are Ultra-Hastened on all your (general you all) attacks and now the problem is endurance, hence the begging of giving everyone Stamina for "free".

And while it's annoying to get Mezzed in battle, you learn not to take on a room full of Tsoo ink men all at once soloing with an AT with no Mez defense. It's called adapting to your enemy by use of a strategy. Or team with people who can give you Mez resistance and can take Mezzers head-on, like the ATs that are designed for that purpose.

Does it annoy me when my character is seeing stars while their hit points are plummeting and there is nothing I can do, sure. But it doesn't happen often anymore and usually after switching for an character where it's not a problem to one that it is. I don't curse that the game is just too hard and beg the devs to make it easier to harden my "glass cannon" into a "tank-mage".

Still that doesn't change the OP's reason for suggesting this which is to take the defensive powers of the pool without taking an attack. And you, me and the 800lbs gorilla in the room know damn well the reason for that is just for IO set bonuses. The boards are all a twitter over Issue 24 adding damage resist bonus sets so players can build resistance godlings and the plotting and scheming is already in full swing looking at how to "break" the game by making all combat trivial.

At some point the devs are going to push back and make some new or existing critter group challenging to godling characters and we'll start seeing threads about how hard the game has gotten and how the new content is "broken" because they can't watch a movie while "playing" this game by following a teammate and have an attack on spam.

And when that happens it'll be players like me who don't have billions on every character to spend on ultimate tricked out slotting who will be facing mobs so overpowered relative to me that the game changes from enjoying content to spend an excessive amount of time designing my character simply to play. One of the big pluses for CoH is how difficult it is to build an unplayable character. I don't want to see that go away but I fear the arms race of building elite characters is going to bite the rest of us in the rump someday.

Hate to say it but Jack may have been onto something by not releasing the hard numbers on powers.

  11. But are you pushing 3D out on both of them at the same time? This game doesn't really use multiple video cards all that well, if at all. Still now you are starting to get into an iffy range with 300 watts worse case between the video cards and CPU Vs 475 watts capacity, since I'm not counting other 12 volt users like drives, motherboard and some case fans.

Also as PSUs age, they can't quite hit their maximums anymore so the question is how much of a buffer do you need, and frankly there's no objective rule of thumb that I've seen, only person rules like +50-100% of CPU+GPU max or CPU+GPU max + X watts.
  12. From what I can find out, it's a PSU favored by Lenovo Thinkstation PCs (oh look, that's what he has). Three 12 volt rails, 18A each but a combined 12 volt rating of only 39ish amps (475 watts). So older design as newer high wattage PSUs can provide 12 volt wattage very close to the rated total wattage as they use the 12 volt supply to generate the 5 and 3.3 volts.

Due to it's generic nature, there isn't a review of it at the usual sites.

It seems like it would be plenty of power to push a single 9800GT (105 watts max) and a Q6600 (also 105 watts max) unless the PSU is going.

Easiest example to see Character Detail in action is turn it down all the way and visit the Freedom Corp store in Talos. You can watch the employees "puff up" the poly count as you approach them, it's not a subtle gradual reduction in polygons, it's switching from one model to another. Or you could simply stand still and play with the character detail slider and watch NPC models swap. In the past certain signature costume pieces would disappear at a distance on critters, like Sorcerer's hats or spiky shoulder pads. A bug at one point made skirts disappear (not the skirts in water bug).

Also all NPCs are displayed at the same distance, neither character or world detail (which is draw distance/fog) affects when you see them, with the exception of a max number of NPCs display limit in which case I believe it's closest are displayed until the cap is reached. Last I looked an example of this could be found in Founders Falls around the sky scrapper north of the ICON with the huge mob of NPCs walking around the base of it. The number is/was (haven't been there recently to check) so high you could watch them pop into existence at a relatively close range. You can also see that world detail doesn't affect NPC draw distance by turning it town in an indoor mission and see critters that are obscured as you approach them by intervening walls/crates/rooms.
  14. Some leaders are only good "fixing" broken projects/departments/companies while others are good keeping it running once "fixed". From my understanding Jack help fix the game with ATs and powersets rather than a classless/skills based design which was too easy to cripple a character.

The problem with fixers is they will always look for things needing "fixing", even when there isn't a need.
  15. Character Detail determines the draw distance when the engine switches between regular and lower polygon models on characters.

Character Texture Quality determines the highest quality texture map that can be used. Lower values will lead to blocky/fuzzy textures when close.
  16. The pools were meant to supplement and never be better than any primary or secondary powers.

    [rant]

My problem is rearranging the set just so min/maxers can get a defense slot mule for another luck of the gambler set with no prereqs.

These are the same folk who successfully beat the devs about the head and shoulders until they gave everyone the Fitness pool because it wasn't fair that they had to make tough choices when choosing their powers while leveling up. The same group that's still whining about making Hasten an intrinsic now that they got the devs to cave on Stamina.

Not every AT gets defense, actually most don't, live with it. Those ATs are trading defense for offense. You shouldn't get both because that makes the game too damn easy. It's not suppose to be easy. Want easy, go install DOOM II and play in god mode. Go to a Field Analyst and turn down the difficulty so your character feels more awesome in battles.

Bumrushing every mob is the equivilent to random button mashing in a console fighting game. You aren't suppose to beat the game that way.

If you don't want to think while playing, go throw birds at pigs, that's a pretty mindless timekiller.
    [/rant]
  17. The pool is called Fighting not Defending. Having the ability to avoid taking Boxing and Kick would be dumb simply to satisfy a min/maxer desire to make it easier to construct a godlike character.

    No Dave.
  19. True but why slot with IOs less powerful than a +0 SO? But true it's only 2.8% difference with a single slot.

However cost wise it can be a huge difference as well as a different grouping of invention salvage needed (low for Lvl 25, mid for Lvl 30).

And now ladies and gentlemen let me introduce you to our special guest, Dr. Evil.
  21. I consider Level 25 Generic IOs a tad weak, I personally slot SOs at 25 and Generic IOs at 30.

    2. If I choose a villian archetype, can I still play as a hero?
Yes. There is a choice in the tutorial to rescue or defeat a hero which determines if you start blue side (hero) or red side (villain).

    3. I have a full time job and will only be able to play sporadicly, so im gueesing team up wont be a option, is there anything I should think about when I want to solo?
The game is very soloable with only a few bits of content requiring teams. There is a difficulty setting NPC that you will be introduced to around level 10 that allows you to make your missions easier or harder by increasing the number of critters per encounter, increasing/decreasing their level relative to you and whether you encounter Boss class critters while soloing or not. There is also a setting to turn opposing Arch Villian/Hero class enemy into Elite Bosses which are somewhat easier.

A good resource for this game is ParagonWiki.
  23. It's a parkour dog. Bet his owner is too. A parkour enthusiast that is.
  24. Dark Astoria was recently revamped into a Level 50 only area. However like Galaxy City there is a way to visit the original zone (echo) by way of Ouroboros time travel.

As for what's in Issue 24, the VIP beta started yesterday and you just need to install the beta client.
