  1. Sorry, didn't see the winky.
  2. This is like the X-men discontinuity discussion. You are trying to make a timeline for a TV series that's been on, including the gap, nearly 50 years that's about time traveling. And whenever they deal with historical events or famous or infamous people from the past there is always a likelihood that the current writer didn't bother with his homework. Toss in all the sort of/could be/maybe cannon of the books and radio dramas, continuity goes straight into the rubbish bin.

    Still it's not as bad as the first few Star War novels before it was established that Luke and Leia were siblings. Poor Alan Dean Foster.

    Sick of Super 8

    You want over advertising, look at Green Lantern. There's the Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, the Subway avocado special, I think Burger King has the kids meals, he's USA channel's "character to watch", numerous extended trailers during various TV shows besides the usual 30 second spots.

    Of course some of that is because GL isn't as well known as Batman or Superman in the eye of the general public.

    Still, it's not as bad as last year's "the day's Airbending moment" during World Cup Soccer.

    3.1GHz i3-2100 is a Sandy Bridge (also called the 2nd generation i series) dual core with hyper threading that crushes all the older Core 2 dual cores in the dust and still beat the cheaper Core 2 quad cores (up to the Q9400). Now compared to a Pentium 4, well have you ever seen the black and white short film Bambi Meets Godzilla?

    As far as Intel knows, there isn't an i5-2100. The lowest numbered desktop 2nd gen i5 (all i5-2x00s are true quad cores, no hyper threading) is the i5-2300. The additional shared L3 cache in the i5-2x00 (6MB Vs 3MB in the i3-2x00) does help gaming while the extra cores really won't help CoH all that much. The i5-2300 is 2.8GHz, the i5-2400 is 3.1GHz and the i5-2500 is 3.3GHz. Intel's tray prices in USD are $117 for the i3-2100, $177 for the i5-2300, $184 for the i5-2400 and $205 for the i5-2500. You can use these prices to get an idea how much the upgrade, assuming they also didn't swap motherboards, should be.

    I would rather see a better selection of video cards but out of those three, the 9800GT is the best of them.
  5. Hyper, that's how Chrome handles multiple tabs, each is an independent program so if a plugin crashes in one, the rest of the tabs stay up.
  6. It's tough to get an estimate on performance between the GTX 285 and the current crop of nVidia cards. My usual references for such things rarely go back beyond a generation. However I did find the GTX 580 and 285 on the same chart here which has the GTX 285 as 61% the speed of the GTX 580 at 1920x1200 or almost 64% faster. Now if you use the GTX 580 as the standard, then the GTX 570 would be 42% faster and the GTX 560 TI as 22% faster than the GTX 285 based on the 560 Ti and 570 data on this chart.

    For power the GTX 560Ti actually is rated as using 13 watts less than the GTX 285, the GTX 570 uses 36 watts more and the GTX 580 uses 61 watts more (at 244 watts). This is based on the max wattage listed for each card at GPUReview.

    Now it's a matter of price. The 560 Ti is targeted in the $200-250 market segment. If that's "lower end" as you put it then just remember it's still faster than the card you have. If you have the bucks and don't upgrade frequently then buy the fastest you can afford, whether that's the GTX 570 or the 580.

    Edit: Let me point out that the GTX 570 has identical performance to the GTX 480 but uses 30 watts less.

    I also liked Rory being reminded he's not a warrior, he's a nurse.

    Loved Rory's "You're so Scottish" line to Amy's plea to "let everyone else die first".

    Both Amy and Rory aren't normal humans. Amy grew up with a crack in space and time next to her bed and Rory is occasionally nearly 2000 years old, when he remembers not to mention being erased from all time and space and brought back.

    Everyone catch the line "unless there are two Doctors". That flesh duplicate will be back, mark my words.

    They also did "who is Amy talking about" when she was warning off the Silence.

    Just a few thoughts.
  9. Another dash back through this thread.

    If you don't care about ultramode settings and high resolution then it's very possible to get a $500 or less PC for the job. But you really need to be on the lookout.

    Generally for that price range it's better to go with an AMD based PC because the integrated graphics that are found on Intel CPUs and motherboard chipsets are very limited when it comes to gaming. True the current Sandy Bridge CPUs have considerably better integrated graphics than previous attempts but most are still outclassed by AMD/ATI's or nVidia's integrated graphics. Only problem with nVidia's integrated graphics is they are only found on older motherboards that use Intel Socket 775.

    You don't really need more than 4GB on a system but memory is cheap and more impressive to the average Joe than a better class of CPU or video, integrated or even a low end card such as the ATI HD 5450 or the nVidia GT 520 which are still a step up from integrated.

    Here are a couple I found on NewEgg. I did include a few Intel Sandy Bridge i3-2100 based systems with their integrated graphics simply because compared to the AMD duel cores, the i3-2100 is considerably faster so when you can afford a video card with the likely power supply replacement, CPU performance wouldn't likely be a problem.
  10. No time to talk tonight but the links are in my sig and commentary at the end of the guide thread.
  11. Yea, thought the young soldier could have been River as well. Heck, the Eyepatch lady could also be River if we didn't know where River ended up.

    Now who else want's to see the continuing adventures of the Silurian and her maid in the 1800's.
  12. Got a laugh out of the "I like bad boys" from Hisako and Logan's reaction in episode 9. He attracts teen crushes like bees to honey.

    Yes but virtual memory is 100x plus slower than real memory. Paging requires multiple drive writes and reads and when you start tossing in seek times into the mix it's equivalent to an Indy 500 car driving into a stretch of wet cement at 200 miles per hour. If anything a better/faster CPU would just make it more frequent.

    Fortunately the OPs rig can be upgraded but considering it's a DDR2/Socket 775 system I question if it's worth the cost in the short term.

    The repair shop that sells parts near me (near is 25 miles away) almost exclusively stock Gigabyte H67 microATX motherboards (last I checked a few months ago). Now if I remember correctly, an H67 based motherboard can only handle up to DDR3-1333 with all faster speeds locked out. If that's the same case with Void's shop then I see no problem with Kingston ValueRam DDR3-1333. At least Kingston is a known brand. Big whoop it doesn't have a heat spreader. Except for extreme overclocking of memory (actual overclocking, not just spec faster) they're as useful as a spoiler on an AMC Pacer.

    On the subject of old PCs, I finally was able to convince my folks to replace their PII 450MHz, Win 98 SE machine with something more modern. For them a clearance priced ($400) HP P6710F is good enough for them. I was pleasantly surprised by the integrated HD 4200. Yes it can't do Ultra Mode but at 1024x768 I was seeing 25 FPS in PI with medium graphics preset, however any AA kills the framerate but that isn't surprising for an integrated solution without dedicated memory. Didn't see the two active cores get above 50% each. Zoning was only 10 to 15 seconds. It's an Athlon II X4 640 with 4GB of DDR3-1333 and a 1TB Seagate 7200.12 drive running Win 7 64-bit Home. No way I could build a similar machine for less.

    Now back to Void's questions.

    I wouldn't worry about overclocking. The current i5 Sandy Bridge quads are the fastest gaming CPUs out there right now. The i5-2400 is only 4% slower than a i5-2500K (when it isn't overclocked) and I'm willing to bet the mark up at your shop between the two is a lot more than 4%. Then there's the better 3rd party CPU cooler you would need if you were going to overclock plus sizing the power supply a tad bigger for the extra wattage an overclocked CPU would use, since a CPU voltage increase is normally needed. Honestly, for a non do it yourselfer, "just make it go", computer user, it's not worth the hassle.

    Memory is cheap. $10-15 a GB. 8GB sounds impressive over 4GB but the actual cost to the builder is very little and does next to nothing to gaming performance. It costs them a whole lot more to put in good video card and a power supply to support it but to the average Joe 8GB of memory sounds more impressive than a high quality 650 watt power supply.

    As for case cooling, it depends on the case but I prefer at least one intake and one exhaust fan. A lot of newer cases with bottom mounted power supplies may also have a top exhaust fan. Also the bigger the fan, the slower it needs to spin to move the same amount of air and the slower it spins, less noise is generated. May not be an issue for you but some people prefer relative quite while simply browsing.

    Can't help with monitors. Just to many models that change with the seasons. I would only suggest you actually see the model in action than order it sight unseen.

    Motherboard brands that I like in no particular order, Gigabyte, MSI, Asus, Biostar and ASRock (think of them as the value line of Asus). Not a fan of ECS or Foxconn.

    Mice and keyboards are a personal preference matter.
  15. Well unlike Green Lantern and Thor which got a ton of TV spots and children's meal tie ins, probably because they are "new" to the general public, the advertising for this film is almost stealth. Also this is the 5th X-men movie with the previous two getting mixed reviews. I think after "fool me twice", there are a number of X-men fans willing to wait till video, reviewers be damn.
  16. I remember teaming with someone called something like 80's Girl years ago. All her random chat messages were 80's song lyrics. I thought it was a neat concept at the time.
  17. Annihilating one atom of anti-hydrogen isn't even going to produce enough energy to reheat your cup of coffee.

    And in the article I read they were only able to keep 7 atoms around for over 1000 seconds and one atom over 2000 seconds. We aren't talking a lot here.

    Poof

    You rang?

    A couple of questions about that config.

    First, what model is the motherboard, more specifically the chipset used. The reason I ask is the H6x series motherboard chipset won't allow a K series CPU to be overclocked, which is the main attraction of a K series CPU, while a P67 or Z68 will. If you aren't overclocking then the difference between an i5-2400 and an i5-2500K is 200 MHz and better integrated video which you won't be using.

    Second is the power supply that's being used. The amount of reliable power it can provide at 12 volts dictates how high end the video card can be.

    4GB of memory is fine unless you are planning to run multiple copies of the game or a boatload of other programs while playing. CoH like any 32-bit app will still only use a maximum of 2GB.

    The weakness in the parts you did list is the video card. The 9500GT is several generations old and simply can't support Ultramode on minimum except maybe at a very low resolution but even then I seriously doubt it. Sounds more like your repair shop is trying to get rid of old stock. Also the low end card is what leads me to suspect a weak, inexpensive or older designed power supply.

    I look for a couple of things in a power supply.

    First it needs to be 80Plus rated because to qualify for that it's tested and passed at it's rated wattage. You will know for certain that a 500 watt PSU will be able to put out 500 watts continuously.

    Second I want to see the maximum wattage at 12 volts to be at least 80% of the total wattage of the power supply. For example the Antec Earthwatts Green EA-430D 430 watt PSU can put out 384 watts at 12 volts. A cheap or older designed power supply won't even list the 12 volt wattage and can provide a lot of wattage at 5 and 3.3 volts but not as much at 12 volts. Today's systems will use 50 watts of 5 and 3.3 volt power combined with the bulk of power needed at 12 volts.

    Third, and this is simply a rule of thumb, a good quality PSU has a list price of $15-20 per 100 watts. If a 450 watt PSU lists for only $20 and isn't on sale, then there is a reason it's only $20.

    Doing a quick and dirty search at NewEgg of Sandy Bridge systems with graphics that can handle Ultramode at medium resolutions or better gives me this. I didn't bother filtering on price. I would point out that unless it has a K series CPU, it's likely using an H6x based motherboard. However you can fix that by going to iBUYPOWER or CyberpowerPC and customize a system that uses a P67 or Z68.
  19. The reading the paper on the toilet was shear genius. Just coming up with so many costumes is a job in itself.
  20. There are a few good things about hoofing it during your low levels. There are some cool touches you miss if you are simply zipping to your next instanced mission such as;

    • Running along the telephone wires or tram tracks;
    • Scaling a building by jumping from window ledge to window ledge;
    • Bowling sounds if you stand outside one of the bowling alleys (I find that sound rather comforting);
    • Certain zone events like the fires in Steel or the Troll Rave in Skyway;
    • and simply getting a feel of the City by running up and down streets and alleys.
    Sure the little touches are quickly forgotten after your 10th character as you simply want to get to 14th or 22nd level but I still remember marveling at them.

    Oh, and welcome to the game.
  21. Lots have changed, from having access to actual numbers to IOs as enhancements. Also there hasn't been as many tweaks to the older power sets since the global defense nerf and ED other than in PVP and there simply aren't that many that PVP since that round of changes.

    Also some may have gotten lives now, it's been 7 years. People graduate, get jobs, get married, have children, buy homes and all of those things cut down on the amount of free time. I know I would rather use my limited time to play then revamp my hardware guide, even though I thought about it almost a year ago.
  22. As I said before, I didn't mind Angel turning, I'm surprised more of them didn't flip considering the circumstances.

    1) They weren't trained for fighting or working as a team.
    2) Shaw and company just took out an entire CIA facility without mussing their hair.
    3) Shaw gives you the join me or I may consider you my enemy speech.
    4) Angel didn't like being looked at as a zoo animal by some of the suits. I admit, that's somewhat weak but she struck me as someone who would follow whoever offered her a better life.

    In 1944, Charles was 12 and Raven 10 (or at least she looked 10), according to the credits. In 1961 this would put Charles at 29 while Raven may appear only 18 or 19 (half aging according to Beast). Not sure how much of a life she had outside of Charles's influence before she met Erik. He's definitely the "bad boy" when compared to Charles.

    Charles a pessimist? Not unless it's opposite day. He thought that they could be accepted if they showed the world how much good they could do. Totally missing the point that individuals with those powers would terrify those in charge.

    I think half the people who didn't like Raven/Mystique was annoyed that she wasn't naked all the time. I like the story element where she has to be encouraged to embrace her natural form after years of hiding it from everyone but Charles and even then, clothed but blue.

    I also strongly feel that this felt like an early Bond film but with superheroes. A yacht hiding/converting into a sub so the big bad escapes. One man (for a portion of the movie) trying to track and take down the big bad on his own. Hot women in skimpy underwear strutting about. Plot to start WWIII between the US and USSR by controlling players on both sides by a third side. All Shaw was missing was a white cat, he already had unique henchmen. I thought it was a pretty good mashup.
  23. Well World Detail is affecting more than just draw distance in the post Ultra Mode World, I seem to remember it also affects the distance of which objects cast shadows and are referenced in reflection off water.

    Also I believe the location of cars and pedestrians are based on server time as they are simply moving on a fixed path. Retransmitted lost packets from the server with out of order server time could cause what you are seeing.
  24. Well it's standard British SciFi fair, reasonably well done. Only caught the first two seasons myself. However the only thing that really catches my eye is bleach blond with the pixie cut (first few seasons) running about in her knickers ( i <3 Abby ).
  25. Blame your own country's policies Yohan. Brazil insists that there's a local representative for all imported commerce. The policy has it's good and bad points with the bad coming from what to do when the local representative doesn't really care anymore (or tack on a huge mark up because they can).

    Personal experience. One company I worked at sold PCs with installed manufacturing software, which was our product, to customers so all they need to do is boot up and everything is already set up (this was way back before most companies had IT departments and the Internet wasn't for the general public). With Brazil we had to get a Brazilian company to buy Brazilian assembled PCs and then install our software we sent them and then our agents could sell these to our customers in Brazil.
