I remember thinking sidney_b was one of the smartest people ever. Whatever happened to her?

Layoffs are just a reality in the gaming industry, and very often not as bad (or as unexpected) as people make them out to be, especially given the tenous nature of design studios. That is to say, a lot of MMO projects are made possible by investments, and those investments rarely pay off any steady profit. As funding vacillates--very often at the end of a particular project, such as an expansion pack--layoffs are simply an accepted reality.
BAB is one hell of an animator and I'm absolutely certain he'll find good creative opportunities in another design team. I've read that thread the OP linked, most of it anyway. There are a lot of fine, elegiac sentiments there, all of which I share. But also a whole lot of misconceptions, pointless assumptions and fallacious arguments about the nature of corporate culture or the reasoning behind the layoff or things like that. So, just be careful. -
I'm guessing you mean archetypes, not stereotypes. I love archetypes, mostly because I love Joseph Campbell, but that's a topic for another discussion. I'm a card-carrying altoholic (a quality I try to mitigate by keeping one designated 'main' at the forefront of my alt-army), and I tend to divide up my new alt projects based on archetypes, but I also enjoy putting an ironic 'spin' on traditional archetypes.
I've got a noir detective, with a bit of Tolkien thrown in (Calarien)
A sultry, roguish thief type: cross between Black Cat, Black Widow and Daredevil (Nightdance, who is a re-rolled Moon Dove)
An angel on earth, inspired by both Superman and Good Omens. (Aingale)
Kabuki-masked, traditional samurai girl. (Akechi Ren)
A lawful-good heroine in tights, public role model and daughter of a heroic dynasty (Arcaness)
A couple others I'm working on: The Power Armor pilot, the imperious and arrogant archvillainess, the thoughtful, philosophical mind-reader, the vengeful caped crusader and the displaced demi-deity. They're just concepts at the moment, though. -
So, I think I'm missing some critical information. What changed in i13 that made PVP inviable? I'm not challenging the conclusion. Just curious.
Edit: Whoops. I guess it is i13? -
Quote:How do you pretend to be a roleplayer? Isn't roleplay a form of pretend? So you're pretending to pretend? Does that make PVP'ers dead-serious and hardcore realistic? Or are we tackling some sort of postmodern model of meta-roleplay? I'm confused.
You gave me no examples here of how there was any roleplay pvp that was actually roleplay pvp not pvpers pretending to be roleplayers. So unless you can you know, find an example thats not some obscure event, I'll just give you the same treatment you gave me. you don't know what your talking about your wrong. -

That's really awesome. I'm going to try and get my hands on that book.

This is Calarien: an experimental alt. She's an elven detective, perhaps the only one of her kind. Freelance, specializes in crimes of the fey--hunting down mischievous Winter Court faerie or investigating the macabre performance art of a serial-killer gremlin.
Honestly, I just wanted an excuse to play Trick Arrow, and TA concepts tend to drift somewhere between Green Arrow/Hawkeye and D&D Arcane Archers, do I decided to meld the two together in some bizarre unholy union of rustic fantasy and film noir.
...Someone should do that, by the way. Frank Miller's Lord of the Rings, or something. "An old wizard dies; the ringbearer lives. Fair trade." -
Quote:This is kind of a specious argument. In order to debate the value of Dual Pistols, we must first presuppose that someone plays it. Avoiding the powerset altogether doesn't address the debate of the powers' efficacy; it just dodges the question.@Umbral
Since you seem to be so opposed to the status of the DP switch ammo that you think should be aim, why not just avoid ROLLING IT? You don't HAVE to take DP. You can just take a power set that has aim and hen you can go on being happy instead of complaining about things that aren't going to change. (PS I still think empathy is better) -
Quote:Seemingly small aesthetic nuances can infatuate picky players such as myself. When participating in the Champions Online Open Beta, I found myself similarly infatuated with the Acrobatics powerset. Eye-candy travel power perfectly suited for certain concepts that, until now, CoH never allowed me to fully realize.So...are you suggesting people shouldn't have ideas if they're already in other games, or that we shouldn't add things to this game that have been in other games?
Either way, less work for everyone.
I grew bored of CO but found myself missing the acrobatics power. It provided the perfect median between the more extreme Super Speed and Super Jump, which I might have found myself otherwise taking out of necessity, rather than concept. And, lo and behold, CoH introduces a similar power with its own minor twists, and I couldn't be happier.*
As long as we're expressing opinions, I find it a little juvenile to dismiss new content purely on the basis of apparent originality, as if the Walk animation were somehow pointless because other popular MMO's have had them since launch, or Ninja Run is somehow less valuable because CO introduced a similar power months ago.
Barring the obvious fallacy inherent in assuming innovation = originality (it's not the same thing. CO might have originally implemented an Acrobatics power, but that doesn't mean the power is inherently their idea), MMORPGs learn from each other *all* the time, and adapting ideas and features from other games is not only accepted but expected. If you don't believe me, try a Public Quest in WAR, and then finish the tutorial in CO. Or spend five minutes with WoW's UI, and then five minutes in LOTRO. Another game may have done it "first", but that doesn't mean the idea is exclusively theirs.
In fact, this is how we get 'mainstream' in games: ideas that become so popular that they are essentially ubiquitous.
*If we had a version of a Swinging powerset, I might. :3 -
I'll see if I can be there on Moon Dove.

"An honest answer is like bacon on the lips."
-
If I had a nickel for every Issue that "killed" CoH, I'd have...*counts*...sixteen nickels. Sorry--did I mess this one up?
-
Bacon has the power to both destroy and heal. When bacon is both true and kind, it can change our world.
-Spoken by the Bodhisattva of Bacon, in the Pork Belly Sutra. -
Well, sometimes I occasionally bump into Toxic_Shia. So yes.

It's not like good names are hard to come up with.
-
"Coming Book Guy/Girl" (though the latter would shatter the intended archetype irreparably)
"Seeing as we are unfamiliar with sarcasm, I shall close the register at this point. Now make like my pants, and split."
"Worst. Episode. Ever."
Hmm. Now I wonder if I can somehow double as a Professional Forum Troll day job. Sadly, I don't think a "Mother's Basement" area exists where I can go to log off. -

Like I said, not a whine or even a big problem, but just a little disappointment. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of those hardsuits, but the chances of me making it to either Seattle or Germany are pretty much slim to none, and slim just left the building.

Seconded.
I do feel happy for anyone who makes it to PAX (Lucky little...*mutters*), and I'm not complaining, per se, but I do hope the costume design team has something similar to this level of awesome to bring in to i13. For example, Enforcer is thematically similar to Vanguard in several costume pieces.
I'm just staring in disbelief at the costume right now. It's absolutely amazing and exactly what I've wanted for ages. And while I understand the decision to make it exclusive, I truly hope some better "powersuit" options are in the works for everyone to enjoy. -

You know, one day I fully expect to come in here to learn that the Devs have announced something like "In addition to oodles of other new content, I13 will double the number of costume options for players", only to find dozens of players decrying too many costume options as the ruination of the game!

Ye Gods. I would not be surprised in the least. -

Wow, that's pretty cool. I doubt I'll ever use it, since I tend to be meticulous about build planning, but it is another option, between respec badges, respec trials, respec recipes and freespecs. -

Oh my God.... I LOVE that! Extraordinarily awesome! The style.. *in love*

Seconded. Love the linework and the expression.
