  1. Also, its worth remembering that a person's personal or sexual proclivities or activities may never come up in any given RP.
  2. Should HAVE. *is apparently being all English-nazi today.*

But yes, Brutes should've got Broadsword. Not that I'm complaining too much, I16 looks to be awesome.

    A pondering...

I'd say that it depends entirely on the father. There have been plenty of incidents of a parent trying to live through their offspring, especially sons, The sad truth is, no matter how well a person may do, they still cringe and bow to the idea of a parent's affection.

Wow Elysienne, if you have characters regularly referencing sex, drugs, and boozing, your silver age SG sure does play it lax. Or perhaps isn't clear what silver age means, or has no clue what the comics code was, etc. etc.

    Wow.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well, I freely admit that I have very little clue about the history of comics, but I'm pretty sure that the heroes of the silver age were still meant to be, you know, people.

Of course, if they didn't act like fully fleshed-out people in their own right, no wonder I didn't bother to read any.
  5. Well, I can certainly see where the original poster is coming from. Fully-rounded, well-fleshed-out characters are, in my opinion, the best kinds of characters.

On the OTHER hand, what restricts that to the less Silver-Age kind of characters? Maybe its just that I don't know my comic ages from the different types of hair on Cro-Magnon Man, but I've been happily playing fully fleshed-out characters in a Silver Age SG for a good many years now.

The drink, drugs, and sex-abusing hedonist, non-superpowered woman who knows she'll die sooner or later in the line of duty because she can't keep up with the 'big boys' in her field.

The runaway child who's so scared of her powers, her past and her family that she assumed a false name in every city that she visited in the travel to Paragon City, and who has never admitted her name even to close friends in-game.

The woman who is innundated with the constant pleas for attention and rescue from Dark Astoria, but knows that she's ultimately powerless to help them.

They aren't angsty characters at all, because there's more to them than their backstory. They simply have terrible, horrible circumstances lurking in their backstory that will, eventually, fulminate into entire plot-arcs. But that doesn't interfere with their day-to-day interactions.

There is no limit, no reference, no restriction to an interesting, fully-fleshed-out character save that that you put on them.
  6. I'll happily hold my hands up to the misspelling of "pederasty." It ws about 3am when I posted, so outside effects contributed to my general idiocy. Such as getting involved in this discussion. It seemed like such a good idea at the time.

Still, I'll carry on because I'm a very particular kind of stubborn.

What annoyed me most about the entire thing was that Smurch was clearly making a straw man out of Fernandes, saying something like "I'm against sexually violating young children over the internet. Aren't YOU?" Which is, of course, a hugely emotive statement, and one that carries a lot of weight.

But why don't we turn that around?

Personally, I'd rather have all the people into pederasty, rnon-consentual fantasy and so forth acting out their sexual desires in a controlled, safe environment rather than going out onto the street and doing it for real.

You're not an advocate of sex crimes, are you?
  7. I'm pretty sure it wasn't me that Talen was referring to, but just to make things perfectly clear; I am not the player of Enerix. I have never really interacted with Enerix or her player (as far as I know) and so on and so on. Still, I'm sure she's a perfectly nice person, and whatever she does with her fifteen dollars a month is her own business, as long as she doesn't shove it in peoples' faces. Figuratively speaking.
  8. Interestingly, I'm a big fan of the correct use of words.

Smurch is one of the few people I've seen use the word "pedorasty" instead of the trendy, catch-all, oft-incorrectly used term "pedophilia."

Unfortunately, he used it in entirely the wrong context. This game does not allow actual physical contact. Until a person PHYSICALLY molests a child, the only thing they indulge in is pedophilia, rather than pedorasty.
Pedorasty is despicable, denegrating and foul.
Pedophilia is a sickness of the mind that may be treatable, as nobody has been hurt yet.

    Imaginary sex? It's IMAGINARY.

    FOR SCIENCE

I also have a few characters that'll benefit from this because they're rerolls of another character and..

Well, I'm sure anyone who's made a reroll of one of their much-loved characters has encountered the aggravation that is not-quite-getting-the-height-right.
  10. Simple? You say brute simple? ME SMASH!
  11. I dunno.. now that we've finally got a new "token vitriol" post, everything feels to be right back to normal.
  12. Man, that twi'lek is useless! Talk about an xp leech.
  13. Awesome picture as always, Shia and may I just say;

    *Snrk* They Live...

    Magic Origin

I find the usual way to solve that kind of "am I omnipotent, am I not?" problem is to communicate with the person who has the problem or what have you.. find out what she wants to DO with said plot-point. Then, even in magic, there are any number of reasons for your character not being able to solve it right now.
Don't understand the problem to its fullest? Failed.
Some kind of magical barrier? Failed.
Have the sniffles this morning so aren't up to 100%? Failed!

    Magic Origin

Oh, so you weren't actually asking why the Magic origin is so popular, just why there are so many "High fantasy" style characters running around.

... Talk about a misleading thread name,
  16. While we're currently not recruiting, you may want to give www.dauntlessreverie.com a quick peruse; we came to the end of our recruitment month in April, and usually do recruitment drives every other month/every couple of months. If you're still looking by that point, feel free to drop us an application then! And of course, in the meantime feel free to get in touch with us in any way you prefer if you have questions.

Also, bear in mind the growing number of "urban fantasy" books, comics, TV shows, films, etc.

From American Gods to Hellblazer Pushing Dasies, the idea of the fantastic and supernatural impinging on the real world has always, to a certain extent, coloured modern-day storytelling. But recently with the growing fame people like Neil Gaiman, that area of storytelling is hitting an even bigger demographic than ever. Of course people are going to want to tell their own stories of similar content, theme or mood. And for roleplayers... well, CoX has a handy-dandy, versatile kit to create the characters that come from those stories.
  18. Yes, that's right. We only accept members every other month, or every few months.. I forget off the top of my head. The reason being that the leadership was lagging behind on applications, and getting burned out on the constant demand. So, to make sure that we wouldn't lose track of people and to keep the admin staff from going insane, we built in a "break-time."
  19. Just to entirely clear things up;

The Dauntless Reverie is a hero-side magical-themed SG that has been running (I think I'm right in saying) almost since the game got out of beta.

Anathema is the DR's sister-group that has been running since CoV started, but it is NOT exclusively magically themed. Though magical characters are entirely welcome and will find company within the ranks of other magically inclined beings.

But yeah, our recruitment cycle isn't up right now. Still,if you people haven't found a group to your liking by the time it re-ups, bear us in mind!
  20. As an Englishman, I have only one response to any public display of affection, be it in any shape, form or quantity.

*Both eyebrows raise, monocle falls out and lands in cup of tea.*

    I say!
  21. Oh, absolutely. If you're going to roleplay a jerk you'll need to expect that people are going to treat your character like they would any other jerk. Or at least, any other superpowered jerk.
  22. I don't think it's fair to say that roleplaying a jerk is a bad idea, but I think you touched on what I'm going to say in your post when I say that it is difficult to walk the line of being abrasive and unlikable as a personality without being unlikable as a character. If the character has SOME merits, it make the bitter pill easier to swallow.

As such, it's a lot harder to get this kind of character accepted into a group of friends than it is a very outgoing and personable character. Obviously. However, when you can I think it's very rewarding.
And I'll admit there that I'm speaking from an experience with one character. There have been other characters I've tried it with and it's just gone badly, so even one tactic that might work for one character might not work for others.
  23. Great stuff, Roy.

I'd suspected it was a tie-in to your earlier story based on the King in Yellow text, but it was really good to see my suspicions confirmed in such a skillful way.

Also, the twist ending was nicely hinted at and wonderfully executed.
  24. Huzzah, my memory for literary ephemera is accurate today.

It was the "no mask!" passage that clicked with me.. and if I don't ask, I'm going to wonder. Was that one of the original passages?

Also, hurry up and write more. I crave to see what happens next.
