Was also in that Beta that had to do with certain magical rings. Lots of slow walking around and spawn camping were definite turnoffs. You forgot another one that really did it for me though. The lack of character options. There were only like 5 different "classes" and everyone of class X was an exact clone of each other. Not just in appearance, but in skill. You didn't even get to choose which skills as you leveled, they were all set for you. Zero choice. Say goodbye to having a bunch of alts, there would be no point. Alts are something I love about CoX.

It was quite a shock coming from a game like this where for example not only can one defender can be very different from another from having different primary/secondaries. But even defenders of the same primary/secondary can be pretty different in what skills they choose.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You never got into dyeing and crafting of armor / weapons, did you? There is plenty of character diversity to be had if one is willing to use it.

I've already got my first set of dye stuff. All I need now is just one more item to start making dyes so I can have a unique looking character.

No different than here where if I want to set up a 2nd costume, I need to run a mission to do it.

I can run from a certain Bridge between talk folks and halflings to the main Tall Folk town and do so in under 10 minutes. That's one of the longest paths in the unnamed MMO and he's grossly exaggerating how slow it is.

Then again, he also didn't mention that you have fast travel available between major cities and a somewhat slower mount travel from town to town.

I also suppose he failed to mention that other forms of teleportation ARE available, just not at the level restricted section the unnamed MMO is at right now until it goes Live.

The bad part is... no one will listen to the facts I've posted and will only remember the untrue negatives the OP stated.

    [/ QUOTE ]
I'm listening! That's interesting. If travel isn't actually much worse than in Co*, then way to go, developers of that game! Sounds like camping is still an issue, but I'm willing to accept that the old time rotting carcass "travel problem" isn't actually all that bad in the new game. I'm still not especially eager to try it, at least until I hear about other features that will make me like it more than Co* ... and I guess this might not be the appropriate place to talk it way up, but feel free to PM me or post a link to some good resources.

In any case, it's good to hear that another developer has made some progress out of the mire of the Bad Old Ideas.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well, I had a PM from a poster here and here's what I told him...

    [ QUOTE ]
What struck me as really interesting while I was typing it up was that upon close examination, both games are REMARKABLY similar. The real major difference is the content / genre.

    Fast Travel = Trams
    Traits = Enhancements
    Skills = Powers
    Instances = Missions

It is there if people choose to look. The problem is, people tend to be afraid of change.

    [/ QUOTE ]

CoH/V and the Unnamed MMO *ARE* very much alike. Moreso than people are giving credit for. Travel isn't bad. There are two towns in a certain race's starting area that are about 800 yards apart. Takes me about 2 minutes to run there without run buffs and that includes following the winding path and the bridge over a beautiful double waterfall and river.

Sure, we don't have personal travel powers at the low end in the Unnamed MMO, but we have access to "tram" travel as well as can either run or hoof it to the next town/zone. Even with some of the travel powers in CoH/V, it can still take a few minutes to get from the tram / zone entrance to the mission door. It's no different than CoH/V.

Plus as I mentioned, there are teleport skills available but not in the early portion of the game. When I say teleport, I mean Across Zone(s) teleport such as going from Zone 1 to Zone 4 because the skill is Return to Zone 4. The CoH/V analogue would be the Pocket D Teleporter... it teleports you to Pocket D from where ever you are currently at. One class in the unnamed MMO gets 4 or 5 of those plus one that recalls the user to the closest respawn point (For CoH, it'd be a recall to hospital).

I may keep my sub open here since I have a lifetime membership option with the unnamed MMO. Given that I stay with a MMO for at least 2 years (been here since Aug 04), the lifetime membership over there is a definite steal for me. Then I can keep paying for one MMO and play the other when I see fit / feel like it.

I simply took umbrage at the OP's starting post on this thread because it's a one sided diatribe on how X game is bad and horrific while those very same attributes are perfect here even when they are done the same way.

The slow plodding pace of the new unnamed MMO came as a horrific shock where suddenly I'm walking for 10 minutes to do a 2 minute quest.

    [/ QUOTE ]
I just need to take a second to say ... what the F. Words cannot do justice to my amazement that developers are still using this ... rotting donkey carcass smeared with rancid vomit ... of a gaming idiom.

    Great posts Euler.

    [/ QUOTE ]

The only problem with that snippet is that he must have been walking from one end of a zone to the other end. I've timed it before. I can run from a certain Bridge between talk folks and halflings to the main Tall Folk town and do so in under 10 minutes. That's one of the longest paths in the unnamed MMO and he's grossly exaggerating how slow it is.

Then again, he also didn't mention that you have fast travel (basically travel that is faster than using the Pocket D teleporter) available between major cities and a somewhat slower mount travel from town to town.

I also suppose he failed to mention that other forms of teleportation ARE available, just not at the level restricted section the unnamed MMO is at right now until it goes Live.

You see, he failed to mention these other salient points in his diatribe on how unnamed MMO = horrific and CoH/V = gotta be a cheerleader.

The bad part is... no one will listen to the facts I've posted and will only remember the untrue negatives the OP stated.
  4. Well, I had an eloquently written out rebuttal to your OP. Apparently it offended the forum software and it ate it.

Suffice to say, that you do not appear to have given the unnamed MMO a fair shake. You also denigrate portions of it while praising those very same attributes within CoH/V (travel, team makeup, character differentiation, etc).

I do have to say that many things being done in the unnamed MMO are great. They are even fixing some recent economy adjustments because they went too far towards nerf and missed the desired mark. That's right, they aren't letting it languish like it would here in CoH/V.

Then again, storyline and lore are paramount in the unnamed MMO. Where's the beef here? Where's the storyline & content here? I've already made the trek from 1 to 50. So where is the rest of the story that should be regularly added?

Then again, the pricing of the unnamed MMO is pretty nice too. Much better than the pricing deal I get here with Cryptic/NCSoft. Heck, the pricing I get with ArenaNet/NCSoft is better than what I get here.

All I have to say is that I'm glad you enjoy it here. I'm not the fan of Paragon and Rogue Isles that I used to be. I find myself wanting to move in some direction that's not here, let the Age of Heroes take hold, and have some new hero take my place should one choose to.

Yep. And why didn't people believe the Devs when they said that ED would diversify things?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Because what they gave us at the time did jack for "Diversity". I would go so far as to say that it reduced diversity in the playerbase's slotting schemes.

    Why?

Because they took a few days short of forever (hyperbole, I know but it gets the point across) to implement the OTHER half of the change that included ED. You know... the other half that is typically left on the design room's floor.

But before you clap and applaud, you might want to look in another thread about what happens when you exemplar and you are a set IO user... Castle's response there leads people to believe that Exemplar = No set bonus whether you exemplar down 3 levels or 30 levels. You lose ALL SET BONUSES.

team buffs have a mechanics problem. Teams vary in size from 1-8 so a buff that applies to everyone on the team is multiplied in effectiveness from 1x to 8x. Either a buff is useless for small teams or godmode for large teams - or both.

What if team buffs had diminishing returns? Say 150% effectiveness for teams of 1-2, 125% for 3-4, 100% for 5-6, and 75% for 7-8 (numbers given are just an idea, the real numbers would need to be better balanced and more complex like (Y-1) X (12.5% + R/2.3).

That way buffs would be more useful on smaller teams and less powerful on bigger teams than they are now. A team buff should still give a bigger total boost on a large team but not 4x on an 8 person team what it does on a 2 person team.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yes, they should. In fact, adding diminishing returns to buffs and debuffs of all sorts would allow us to alter many, many problematic powers. In all likelyhood, though, it will not happen. The change would simply be too fundmental and require a great deal of work on our part.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Lord help us, they'd do it if they could!

    [/ QUOTE ]

Sure! Then Weave could give 15% Defense, and Combat Jumping could give 25% Defense (or whatever) and combined, they'd give 30% instead of 40%. When the local FF Defender buffed the character, instead of the normal 25% for the FF, it'd be 5% for 35% defense.*

Basically, additional buffs would always be helpful, but the base level abilities could be made better and more useful across the board.

    * Disclaimer: All numbers used illustratively and do not indicate any relation to what said values or formulae would actually be if we were ever to implement a system such as this, which I doubt.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Castle, just for the record... if it helps to get this implemented, I'll happily sign it and even send cookies to Statesman and Positron.

The reason why I support it... the game is very much City of Buff/Debuff rather than Heroes/Villains in general IMO.

You'll only be able to get 1 HO and 1 rare recipe in a 24 hour period by raiding Hamidon.

sooooo... we raid twice a day, once for a recipe and once for a HO?!

    [/ QUOTE ]

It would be better IMO if they made it every 20 hours rather than 24 hours or perhaps if they made it one HO per day.

Hear me out before crying doom...

You go to the raid sometime after 7pm. You get done 30 minutes later and have your HO in hand.

You show up the following night around 7pm but get done 25 minutes. Due to the timer, you can't get another HO because it hasn't been 24 hours.

So why not tie HO & recipe rewards to 12am Central? From 0000 to 2359, you can only get one reward of an HO and a recipe. That would mean you could complete a HO raid at 2355 and then start up another HO raid at 0001. But once you completed that, you can't get any more HOs as a reward until you enter the next calendar day.

In other words, base the reward timers on DAYS not hours. It would make it a lot easier to manage from the player perspective and STILL stays true to the reward limits the Devs have set.

Open topic to discuss the Pocket D Jubilee that was hosted in pocket D from Feb.13 – Mar. 4. If you experienced an event worth sharing and would like to send us your stories please email it to Lighthouse@ncsoft.com.

Give us your feedback and comments here.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Feedback?

Get rid of Snaptooth or relegate him to an inferior position. I find it implausible that he's able to counter DJ Zero.

Perhaps introduce someone as Snap's boss?

At the same time, give the good DJ some life. Have him out walking around the place, chatting with folks, floating up higher cranking out some tunes on a VR DJ rig (looks a lot like the inventions cube in terms of wireframe).

The idea of Pocket D is nice, but it needs more life.

I also want to add that I only bothered to get the badges and costume parts on the characters they made sense for.

    Otherwise I IGNORED THE EVENT.

Cryptic needs to grasp that folks like to play alts... lots of alts. So why in Atlas Park's manicured green lawns are the events MADE FOR SINGLE CHARACTERS rather than account based? Event mission design is based on people having just a couple of characters. The fact that people have lots of alts is completely ignored.

Hell, bringing back the Chalet would have been a better Valentine's Day event than the crap we had. Snaptooth is old and worn out.

Lastly, something needs to be done about the Red Caps. They were made excessively powerful for the powerlevels of I3 & I4. We all got reduced but the Red Caps never did. As a result, even AFTER tank level resistances (ED Slotted), you are going down in a matter of a few seconds, even on solo play.

Thanks for the update, but would the cape crash cause non cape wearers to crash?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Absolutely. I believe I verified a recipe that would cause *my teammates* to crash, which involved my costume plus one of my toggle armors.

I was somewhat reluctant to post the exact recipe on the forums because (a) it could lead to griefing and (b) there were clearly more recipes than just the one I identified. (Also, I only really figured out the last piece of that particular puzzle this past weekend.) If you look through my posts you can see me digging for this info among people who crashed.

That specific bug appears to have been fixed in the latest patch (thanks, Cryptic!) but there may be other combinations of costume and powerset that cause these problems.

Please don't write off the capes/trenchcoat problem by saying "I have a cape/trenchcoat and I never crash". You may not have the pair power that causes the problem, or you may actually be causing those near you to crash without realizing it.

    - Protea

    [/ QUOTE ]

Hmm, that might explain why folks don't crash around me or that I don't crash with a cape on screen... I use a standard cape (original rectangular type) on most of my characters. The same type of cape that has been in the game for years.

Then again, few of my characters have an aura based power, though some do have costume auras.

Also, the organization of salvage in bins and with worktables in it's current state makes it almost impossible to craft items (or even know what you CAN craft) in a reasonable amount of time - to the point of not wanting to do it at all. *Points up to Hellguard's post*. Please look at this as it will become unfathomably worse once invention salvage is implemented.

Nah, he's fire/fire. It's not especially uber. Ultimus is possibly just a really good fire/fire brute. Also shivans and nukes help (and those might be on the choppibg block anyway).

    [/ QUOTE ]

Regardless or not, my comment was "IF" they do a nerf someone might cite him as the scapegoat because of this post, not anything more or less.

The problem stems from the fact, that it seems all nerfs come in regards to the builds that consistently solo those situations that aren't meant to be solo'd.

And fighting an AV solo is usually in that realm. So the publicizing of it on here, is usually a red flag saying "Please, this is too easy ... ramp up the difficulty for this build"

Nothing negative, just what appears to be the trend in the nerfs. Not saying that he's a good or bad player ... just saying that commentary such as "I solo'd in this kobyashi maru-like situation" usually herald a round of nerfs.

Now we all know that when nerfs come around, everyone with that build (or who wants that build) will generally find a scapegoat for the reason that specific nerf was chosen.

This thread, if a nerf comes around, will probably be cited as teh reason for the nerf occuring ... and since he started the thread, then he will be the scapegoat that their flames will be directed towards.

I personally don't have a tanker as of yet, tho I might roll one up soon ... just because I can ... might do Stone/NRG or something like that ... just because it looks like it might be fun to play ... =)

    [/ QUOTE ]

Just remember though... in keeping with the nature of Cryptic Brand Nerfs... because he did this with a Fire/Fire brute, ALL Brutes will be nerfed should they decide to nerf.

Because if one can do it, they all can do it... right?

    Cool.

Hey Castle, how about a typical Castle non-committal but still more information than we had before answer to the following question:

When do you expect I9 to be on test?

To avoid the answer 'soon(tm)' I'll make it multiple choice with the following disclaimer: You answer is assumed to be only an estimate and assumes that everything goes perfectly, a meteor doesn't fall on Positron and no one at Cryptic or NCSoft gets food poisoning from eating old pizza and mountain dew.

A - Within the next month
    B - 1-2 months
    C - 2-4 months
D - Soon(tm) as the term is used by Cryptic.

Extra credit if you can give us some idea about MoG.

    "Moral Combat"

Same here. We buy age appropriate stuff for our daughters and occasionally let them play video games with us. More often than not, the kids would rather watch Dad play games and ask questions. They apparently find it greatly entertaining to watch me play games.

I think it has something to do with the arcade champ effect (as I call it). Whatever, it works and I don't let the kids watch the gorier stuff and won't let them until they are older.

Likewise, what they can watch on TV is controlled and we periodically check in out of the blue just to make sure they are following the rules. It's gotten to the point where our daughters will come home from a friend's house across the street if a show is on they aren't allowed but their friend is. They understand that Mom & Dad don't like them watching certain shows and why.

    "Moral Combat"

    [ QUOTE ]
    [ QUOTE ]
There has been a lot of talk about video games causing violence by people like Jack Thompson. Some people agree with his views and some people do not...I for one do not. Personal opinions aside, a documentary is being made called "Moral Combat" talking about the gaming industry's effect on society. Penny Arcade listed this link . Within this trailer they have a few screenshots of Statesman, as well as shots from other games. I'm not trying to start a flamewar about video game violence, but what I do ask is this: Do you think the CoX universe really falls under the same category as the rest of the games shown in 'Moral Combat'? Is there really a reason to put a game like ours under fire? Hope this makes sense, and thanks for reading my early morning rambling.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Violence existed way before the advent of video game, TV,and movies. In fact, society as a whole is much more civilized than 2000 years ago, or during the Dark Ages, or even 1950s. Hence, any attempt to link violence with new inventions, is ultimately illogical.

Having said that, I do think that violence on TV and video games can DESENSITIZE a person to violence. But it certainly does not cause or promote violence.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You are saying we are *more* civilized now than humanity was 2000 years ago? Have you done an honest comparison between present day and the past?

At best, I'd dare say we break about even. Humanity is in sorry shape still.

I concur when I did my safegaurd missions with Superspeed I wasn't even close to the malta and they would turn away from blowing up boxes and such to fire on me from a long distance. This definetly is not the perception that malta in regular missions or even on the street have. I tested it by running through (within 10ft) of some on the street and they didn't even look at me. But in the safegaurd missions they see me and shoot even if I run past at up to 60ft. I wonder if it's a stealth bug in safegaurd missions? or maybe working as intended to make it difficult to complete, all I can say is thank goodness for status protection, I wouldn't try that with my blaster

    [/ QUOTE ]

I can verify this, too. Last night doing the Skyway safeguard mission, Trolls would start firing on me from 60+ feet away, even though I had superspeed going. They were NOT ambush mobs, just street loitering mobs. I couldn't go anywhere without being fired on by Trolls (the ambushers in Skyway are Lost, not Trolls). Stealth just did no good at all.

Safeguard missions have issues with stealth.

As for the original poster, you discovered that the Warburg scientists are the only hostages that can follow you while stealthed. All other hostages can't, and never have. NPCs that fight with you aren't considered hostages, and they will follow you while stealthed, but the Warburg scientists are the only non-combat NPCs that will follow you while stealthed.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Hostages that fight along side you once you rescue them also follow you regardless of stealth. Villain from Jail in Mayhems, General Z from the skyraider arc in the mid 20s, etc.

I would suggest that this would represent the *lower* limit of how much damage nova should do: since a solo heroic mission can spawn a +1 LT, nova should be guaranteed to kill such a critter, if its designed to incapacitate the blaster completely.

I think their current design is left over from the days of 5-6 slotted damage.

Hey guys, our plan is to get you new Issues three times a year. Issue 7 was bigger than originally planned (Mayhem Missions got thrown into the issue at the last possible second) and that, coupled with other delays, screwed up the schedule for 2006, thus only 2 free content expansions on the Live servers this year.

2007 has three Issues planned for it, one near Q1/Q2, one for the summer, and one for the end of the year. I can't give more exact dates than that because everything is subject to change.

How about, "It seems like the Devs aren't very good at math due to X and Y mistakes they've made?"

I'm not saying it's polite, but pointing out where the Devs are lacking can certainly be true. After all, they're only people, and therefore imperfect.

Heck, if I were on a Dev team and found we kept making errors in judgement or coming up with different answers than everyone else, I'd take serious stock of the situation and maybe start thinking about bringing someone in to bolster those areas where we keep coming up short.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You don't have to be overly polite to give constructive criticism. And criticism doesn't require insults.

I've been accused of the dev-fan-love thing. But my biggest complaint about that, just treat like human beings, not dogs. There's been a lot of really valid points that got lost in a thread because everything devolves. Remember the 'Lying liers and the lies they tell' crap? That was nuts. Just nuts. But I believe that if that whole thing had been phrased differently, there wouldn't have been the bit Statesman cutting the other devs brake lines to diversify the ride home or replacing his muffler with an Ethiopian baby.

    [/ QUOTE ]
I don't disagree, but all this does is give certain posters (and you likely know which ones) another way to try and publicly discount the possibly rational, if poorly-self-moderated, complaints of others. So I agree to a point, but then caution folks that there's often a reason people get heated about things, and it's because they care, which is really testament to the game.

Also, the Devs don't need our protection. They are adults. They're perfectly capable of ignoring foolish rants themselves without having us conflagrate things and forcing the mods to lock threads which might otherwise have yielded insight and relevance.

I say it all time in these threads: complaints are GOOD. Complaints are whip that keeps the ox pulling the plow. Complaints are what tell a business how to improve. Complaints are opportunities for a business to improve consumer relations.

The greatest threat to the game isn't people complaining; far from it, in fact. The greatest threat is from people whose devotion to the game is so complete that they can barely see any flaws to improve upon, and can't countenance words daring to say otherwise.

    ...uh, sorry about the soapbox.

Also: The brakeline and baby thing were satirical. Satire, parody and humour are often the best ways to find out what a group is thinking, and shouldn't be discounted simply for being colourful.

    [/ QUOTE ]

In other words... complaints are free feedback updates from the customers.

Likewise the idea that "no news is good news" is a very bad idea. No news means no feedback, good or bad. That means people don't care enough to say something. That's a bad place to be.
  22. [ QUOTE ]
People seem to be overlooking the fact that right now we're playing a 3-4 gig beast when the original CoH was a little gig baby. We're dealing with a LOT of code that takes a LOT of testing to get new content added. And we're also dealing with a far more critical playerbase right now than we were at launch. If something goes on test that isn't 100% perfect (Flight poses, looking at you), you can be sure there'll be protests.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Just to interject here... be aware that the increase from 0.9 gig to 2.1 gig is mostly art & graphics. The code hasn't increased appreciably, just the art assets it uses.

Now, I'm not saying that the code hasn't grown (it has). I'm just making a point that most of the increase is due to art.

Now as for content updates, GW does a remarkable job of making many little adjustments as well as free content updates plus they run regular events. Their major content updates are box sets but they do free ones as well.

Like many others here, I find it some what disconcerting that the updates are taking longer and longer.

Intestingly, costumes have no gameplay value. They don't boost damage. They don't boost resistance. They don't boost defense. They're only for show.

    [ QUOTE ]
Admittedly, there's not quite the same amount of textures, colors, etc., but there's still a lot of versatility. And the layout possibilities are endless.

    [/ QUOTE ]

And they're hidden away, effectively in their own dimension. Other people can see my costume and go 'wow' simply by my flying past. To see my base, they have to be in a coalition with me, or on my team while we go there (and for that to happen, we need to have a reason for them to go, other than me saying 'come check out the base'). They can't simply happen across it and go 'wow!'

When something has substantial show value, you have to be able to show it off!

In essence, a show bird needs a stage to show off on. A show bird without a stage isn't a show bird.

Hence why costumes are great and bases are "meh".

Your signature, is that from Shadowrun? (now I do feel old)

    Ha!

Yep it sure is... one of my favorite games... (Ohhhh if only they could make an SR MMO that was done right... *droooooooools*) ...and it would so work as an MMO too...

As an aside note, yes you are likely old, or at the very least feel that way... I am fast approaching 30 and find myself finding more and more things that I remember being cool being outdated, or even stranger... brought back in the current retro craze!

    Voltron
    Speed Racer
    He-Man
MEGO dolls (Yes, before the 3.5" action figures, boys did in fact play with dolls)
    GI Joe
    Thunder Cats
    Tiger Sharks
    Transformers/Go-Bots
    Atari
NES (8 bits of sheer POWER!)

I may not be as old as some here, but I'd wager I'm as old or older than most...

Heh, older than you. I also remember things like Coleco Vision & Intellivision. Mighty Mouse cartoons...

Then again, my wife is older than me and remembers a few things I only vaguely remember of in passing.
