Thanks for the announcement, but I do have a question.
Quote:Can we get some detail on the precise timing of these freespecs? And if that wasn't enough, all our VIP players will receive:
- A Respec Token per existing character (make sure you've used up your free Respec token if you already had one, they don't stack!)
I'm assuming that the launch of Freedom includes the bit that allows us to select Epic/Patron pools at level 35, and I would definitely like to respec my characters to take advantage of that. But I can't do that until after the patch, so I'm hoping you won't be handing out the new freespecs until several days later.

EDIT: Proper quote now included! -
Quote:Very interesting analysis, SJ. I hadn't really thought about the inter-form balance in that way.No, no. That's not the only thing I want. It's just the single easiest way to address the disparity between the two.
And we have all presented our ideas, but were they really read by the devs? By the looks of the changes, they just skimmed through the first page or two of posts at some point this month, because all the discussion we had in the forums prior to that has apparently been disregarded.
I'd rather see Photon Seekers turned into some sort of clone of Extracted Essences than I would see Light Form turned into a clone of Eclipse.
What REALLY needs to happen is to take the forms into account when making changes to the archetype. That obviously either wasn't done or there is a new, single-form heavy direction for Peacebringers.
Either way they'll still be underperforming.
I'm hardly a Kheldian expert, but here's my idea: redesign Photon Seekers so that it can be used to different effect in each of the three forms. Human form keeps the current explosive pet for alpha strike potential. The Dwarf gets something like Photon Sentry, an intangible pet with no attacks in exchange for some sort of heal/buff. Nova gets a Photon Sentinel, which shoots things for reliable ongoing dps.
Obviously technical hurdles might make this a non-starter, but based on Swap Ammo, I think it's at least theoretically possible. The catch is whether the different powers can be made to share the same cooldown timer; I'm unaware of anything like that having been done before.
Anyway, that's my thought.

Quote:Actually, I think EC's point was that selling "power" which could be obtained exclusively via microtransactions would ultimately lead to a split base. People who want the power would feel as though they 'had' to buy the widgets, and might feel resentful about it. People who cannot use MTs for some reason would feel left out and abandon the game.Actually, the problem here is that the notion of an "advantage" is vague. Let me be precise. The reason why you should be cautious about selling "power" is specifically because most MMOs are built with a design principle of game balance: balance between the power levels of players and other players, and balance between the power levels of players and the content. If you're going to factor these metrics into the design of your game, then selling power that can directly affect these metrics is, essentially, selling the ability to affect those design metrics to players. Its, in effect, selling your design soul.
The video wasn't particularly interested in the balance implications of the specific items offered, because that's not really a function of MT; that's what MMOs are built on regardless of their payment model.
Quote:That's why you have to be extremely careful. But I think the Extra Credit video is being extremely oversimplistic, because even by their own reckoning there is a difference between "convenience" and "power" when that line is actually very blurry. They also specifically mention the issue of earning in-game *real* money, and and if anything equals power, its cash. They say its fine to earn actual currency that is equivalent (if not directly exchangeable) to cash, so long as the time cost is balanced to be extremely long.
If that is the case, then as a corollary it should be ok to sell "power" provided that the boost that is sold is counterbalanced by their effective monetary cost. For example, no one would care if players could buy small insps from the store at almost any cost however small, because those things fall from the sky and can be earned in-game trivially. Their monetary cost is practically zero. You'd only be selling convenience. Access to much more powerful inspirations, on the other hand, has to be more carefully considered because those are things that can grant to the player more effective power than they otherwise could have. But that's tempered by the fact that inspirations have limited lifespan, ones you can earn in the game are already pretty powerful anyway, and in terms of overall impact they can't do much more than affect a single fight or two.
So your example would be fine as long as inspirations are also available via in game currency.
Quote:There is a huge grey area that I think the Extra Credit video bulldozes over. Perhaps that's because its been radically oversimplified to target a relatively uninvolved audience. But if that is the case, its basically saying nothing interesting to me I haven't thought about myself for a long time.

Quote:Most likely true. But I really wonder what sort of positive light they expected to shine on this. Maybe El Super Mexicano accidentally burned all the Circle's robes and cloaks and this was all that's left? You do realize this is from issue 21, right? And that there's a lot of time between now and when issue 21 hits for them to advertise the change via a website article or a developer's letter, no?
It's unfortunate that this got into the ComicCon demo, but if the demo was of issue 21, it'd be kind of hard to avoid. But I think it's silly to believe they were just going to plop this down on live servers without some fanfare on the website and some backstory in the form of some kind of dev post here officially in the coming months. It's just a matter of priority and with a new issue bringing Free to Play gameplay, new trials, new power sets, a new veteran rewards system, and more to advertise first they hadn't gotten to it yet.
-D -
Quote:Just in case I haven't posted on a thread you've tallied up yet, count me as extremely opposed to this change. The old CoT look was great. It had a clear theme the suited the Circle perfectly. In addition, it was quite distinctive from the other mobs in the game, so it helped the CoT stand out.The images that players are basing their judgments on are pictures of a screen from SDCC. This is both good and bad:
- It's good because it's allowed us to get some unsolicited feedback upon which to act, and we are acting on it.
- It's bad because we were unable to present this revamp on our own terms using appropriate screenshots and in game images.
-Z
The new look does none of that. They not only don't look like a coven of mages, they look like a random assortment of costume bits. Perhaps the stills aren't doing the new costumes justice, but it doesn't even look like the texture or details are any better than the old ones.
I know it's unpopular to to have NPCs wear costume pieces we players can't use ourselves, but forcing them to wear generic castoff gear instead is a cure that's worse than the disease. Please leave the CoT as they were.

Quote:Then I'm going to have to say the new system was a waste of time. Tripling the rate at which we get rewards is nice, but it doesn't solve the fundamental problem. And letting people buy their way into the system, when we're already getting a conventional store, just makes the whole thing into a clumsy hybrid.Assumed wrong. Positron said in the chat that not everyone will like all the option, but will have to complete a tier to advance to the next tier.
I was hoping for much better.
-D -
Quote:Wait, seriously? That defeats most of the purpose of selecting rewards in the first place. I had assumed you'd be able to proceed to the next tier as soon as you made one pick in the current tier.
Booo!
-D -
Quote:What are the qualifications for being a Tier 9 VIP? Presumably you have to be a current VIP, I get that. But do you need to have unlocked a Tier 9 VIP bonus, or is the mere potential to do so enough? The consumables at the lower tiers seem to me like "Hey, here';s something you might like to get later on when you're Tier 9. Try some out!" I don't think they're a reward below Tier 9 in and of themselves.
As for the points, Tier 9 VIP means that you'll get a total of 550 Paragon Points every month you're subscribed. Exactly what it says.
-D -
I'm not quite sure I've got all the details, but I think I understand the gist of the program. I've never liked the way the Vet system worked, so any improvement would be welcomed. Still, this doesn't do much to excite me. I'm disappointed that they're still not making it purely a la carte.
I'm not keen on mixing purely non-permanent rewards into the system, either; seems like it would be better to leave those in the upcoming 'normal' store. Either way, it's hard to rate how useful those rewards are until we see some details. I'm particularly confused about how the Enhancement enhancers are supposed to work.
Also, where does City Traveler fit into the new system? It's mentioned in one of the early slides, but it's not listed on any of the tiers.
-D
EDIT: One more question. It says you get an extra 150 Paragon Points/month if you're a Tier 9 VIP. What exactly does that mean? -
Quote:The devs certainly seem to have settled on total proliferation. That said, I'm still skeptical about giving Controllers Dark Miasma or giving Kinetics to MMs.Since we already have ported powersets that were previously said "would never be done" or "would be too over powered" or "would be too weak and broken" and those ports worked out fine, I tend to disregard any other such similar statements about other ports.

Quote:I still think that's a largely illusory benefit. It only helps if you actually want to use the same part on 2+ characters. I suspect most of them, especially the non-Ascension parts, are too specific to have a lot of repeat use.To unlock the pieces on one single toon. The incarnate pieces are account wide (well for level 50's).

Quote:Phew! Glad it's being addressed.Just saw another thread covering this..

Incarnate XP
Incarnate XP is being incorrectly divided in leagues of greater than 8 participants. The amount being received is less than intended.
A fix is in progress.

Quote:Why turn the game into a different game at level 50? You're simultaneously setting the soloists/small ground enthusiasts up for disappointment, and forcing trial lovers to slog through 50 levels before they can get to the good bits.Maybe because they consider end game content to be team focused, but how you get to it doesn't really matter?

Quote:Little known fact: prior to his heroic death, Atlas was tasked with picking up the borders of Rhode Island and moving them about 20 miles out in all directions. That's why we can fit several zones in modern paragon!Actually, it can't be in Rhode Island. Because if it really WAS in Rhode Island, you'd be OUT of Rhode Island after taking three steps.

Quote:Did fully 'leveled' characters really return their share of iXP to the pool? That seems unlikely.Numerous people are complaining about the vastly reduced iXP since the patch. My suspicion is that it's dividing it among everyone on the team, even the ones who can't earn it.
At any rate, I'm not sure what happened, but my rate of gaining iXP is much lower - probably somewhere around a third of what it was before. I really don't think we needed to spend longer unlocking those slots.

Quote:Isn't that what the difficulty sliders are there for?Everyone's definition of challenge is pretty varied, and often mutually exclusive. What I find a challenge might bore you, what you find a challenge might be uninteresting to me.
I don't quite understand why it's considered normal to design solo content for the first 50 levels of the game, but then unreasonable to design it for the next 10 pseudo-levels.

Quote:Thank you for the response, but I still have some concerns. Thanks for your feedback regarding the new loading screens. We are extremely excited about these panels you've been shown and are eagerly anticipating being able to show you the rest of the comic
when Issue 21 launches. I have been speaking with Noble Savage, El Topo and Second Measure regarding some of your concerns, and we certainly understand some of the viewpoints being expressed in this thread.
A few things we can clarify really quickly:
- Back Alley Brawler is being illuminated by a gigantic fiery meteor of doom, which at it's position is akin to being a light source as bright as the sun. As such the lighting has a bit of a bright orange hue to it, which has been saturated to an extent. There's definitely no intent of changing skin tone.
- Sister Psyche's expression is one of both shock and fear, which we consider an appropriate reaction to an apocalyptic storm of death and destruction hurtling at her from above. As a member of the Freedom Phalanx, nothing short of a world threatening event could evoke this kind of reaction from her.
The above being said, we have been paying attention to your thoughts. We'll be making some very subtle adjustments to the image which address these concerns while still preserving its artistic integrity.
We're very excited to be exploring this new artistic direction with City of Heroes Freedom. This style of comic book is something that's considered new and cutting edge to many comic book enthusiasts and we're stoked to be leading the way among Super Heroic MMO's in evolving our style to embrace it.
On BAB, I understand the intent, but I don't think it's conveyed very well, probably because the background is rather dark. If the buildings behind him were similarly washed out, it might help. Instead, they're mostly in silhouette. It's a weird effect. For the record, I still think BAB comes across as dark skinned, but it did take me a few seconds to recognize him.
On Sister Psyche, however, I really object. I don't equate those lips with "shock and fear." At all. Even if I did, it would be hard to take that shock and fear seriously when she's thrusting her chest out in that ridiculous pose. Honestly, it looks like she should be clutching a towel to her chest, having just stepped out the shower to find this week's murder victim on the floor.
There's no excuse to keep feeding the notion that female characters are only there to be explicitly female. I hope you can devote the time at some point to rework this cover*; it's not the image I'd want to associate with the new CoH experience.
-D
EDIT: Specifically, her pose. I'm glad you will be tweaking it, but I'm not sure that will be enough.

Quote:I've certainly spent a lot of time waiting for trials on your server, Pacur; I've even waited along with you while some of your leagues filled up. I'd have to say the time spent waiting for trials is a large percentage of the entire time I've devoted to trials. As I said before, I do not find putting a team together for trials and TFs to be exceedingly large. Even on a low-pop server such as mine it is not difficult.
It wouldn't bother me as much if we could actually do things while waiting, but unfortunately we can't.

Quote:I'm not even qualified to play a hockey fan on TV, but to my untrained eye I'd have to disagree. Rome clearly accelerated after Horton had passed the puck. I do think Boychuk should have been given an interference penalty, but didn't need to be suspended.I'd really hope the double standard shown by the officials and the league doesn't carry over to tonight.
Mike Murphy is being two-faced when you compare the Rome/Horton hit to the Boychuk/Raymond hit. Both hits were over a second from the player getting hit having possession, both hits were penalty worthy (Boychuk should have been called on obstruction for having his stick between Raymond's legs), and both caused serious injury. Horton is mobile and has come to Vancouver to watch the game, where as Raymond can't be moved from hospital yet. Raymond might not play again until November.
Either Rome didn't deserve a 4 game suspension or Boychuk needs to be benched.
Anyway, being a Bostonian and having a few die-hard Bruins fan friends, I have to root for the Bs tonight. (Besides, Paragon City is close to Boston, right?) Let's hope it's a good game!

Quote:That sounds all well and good, but it doesn't sound much like the Incarnate system as it's currently outlined. What does the person who enjoys raid content forgo? Its easy to draft this situation as every player has a gameplay preference, and all we have to do is create options for every gameplay preference and have all of them generate the same rewards, and everyone will be happy. In point of fact, in the long run a majority of players will not be happy and leave. That's because players exist on a continuum of different balance points between "content is 100% optional relative to reward" and "cotent determines reward exclusively." The vast majority of players do not sit on any one particular point, so any game that devotes all its content to just one balance point will exclude just about everyone except the tiny minority at that point - regardless of which point you pick.
Including a variety of content with different dependencies means everyone will have some content which is at or near their preference point, and other content that is not. Who we get to keep are the players willing to play the parts of the game they find acceptable and ignore the parts they don't. Who we lose are players that decide what to play based on what they can't do, not on what they can do. The presumption is that the former group of players is higher than any narrow group of players with any specific reward dependence mentality.
Its a presumption I personally share. Its how I would do it if I was in charge.
