Quote:Fair enough, and I appreciate the review - this arc is really more for testing timing mechanics and boss mechanics, so I can then go back and improve story (which I know still needs work).I posted a review in my thread; I gave it three stars.
I was able to solo the arc with a 40 KM/SR Scrapper. A second try with a 35 TA/A Defender failed in the last mission with the EB at a sliver of health. I had some bad luck in that fight and probably would have won if the breaks were even. The Defender also drew five random Boss spawns in act IV; fortunately the ally took care of all but the first.
FIVE bosses in Act IV?! Never had that happen when I tested it. :S I wonder if I did something wrong just before publishing it?!
3 stars is more than I was expecting, TBH, so no hard feelings there.

Heya all - I finally got around to creating my latest arc, and while I did my best to make sure it was playable and interesting and all that, I'm concerned about it being soloable (since not everyone wants to run teams).
Now, for the record, I tested the arc on my grav/kin controller (the one w/o SB, ID, and IR), my dark/psi defender, and my en/en blaster. Each of them managed it okay - challenging, but not too hard. Does that mean I made it too easy? And if I make it harder, will that bias the arc against other ATs?
The arc in question is the 5-parter fast-paced "Cause and Effect" (454140) by @Samuraiko. It's heavily geared toward storyline rather than XP, but could I trouble a few folks of varying ATs to give it a runthrough? Feedback on the arc itself is really secondary to how challenging it is on a particular AT.
Thanks in advance for any help,

My husband got me into it - HE got into it because several of his friends played, but he said he wouldn't start until he could play a villain. After CoV went live, he tested it, approved, and then they got him started.

If, as the main news announcement on the main page states, this is in fact the last con attendance of the year for the PS team, does that mean there is no Bay Area M&G?

Quote:*laughs*I apologize for the atrocious behavior of the one fanboy for another MMO who disliked your masterpiece. It is these people who make Westin Phipps cry!
No, no, no - Obsidius is entitled to make his opinion known... not the least reason of which being that, unless my memory has really gone south, he's been on the Sinclair Syndicate Film Crew for quite some time. (Issue 11, I think? I-12? Somewhere in there...)
And let's be realistic here - consider the size of the playerbase. The people who actually WATCH my videos are but a TINY minority of the playerbase. Therefore, it only stands to reason that there will be at least an equal number of people who watch my videos but DON'T like them, and orders of magnitude more who don't watch them and don't care.
But I am all for making Westin Phipps cry, that sanctimonious hypocritical lowlife *******.

Quote:There are two "COH" fonts, I've discovered. There's Red Circle, which is the font that shows up a lot in vids for COH, and then there's Avenir, which is the 'block' text that COH uses for a lot of stuff on the website (especially the Issue banners and stuff). I was torn on which to use, and went for the 'cleaner' of the two. I suppose an argument could be made either way. Finally got around to watching the vid . . . awesome, awesome, awesome. At first I thought the cuts in the beginning were too fast until I realized that it all worked more for the music and the "feel." The music fit the piece so well. The only very minor criticism . . . . a different font might add a little bit -- even the "CoH" font -- as plain block font isn't adding anything.
And I agree -- while the official trailer was good, I liked yours better.
I love spoofs, so "Most Interesting Man" is my vote.

Video walkthroughs are nice... I guess I was just hoping for more narrative. Also, screen caps of menu systems shouldn't be in a video, IMPO. They don't do much to relay a message except to people who already know what they are, and look overly complicated to a layman (in regards to the Tips interface).
Also, using plot point spoilers in a video screen cap also is, well, spoilerific. Showing off Praetoria is one thing, but divulging plot points just to show off some spiffy game mechanic is a little frustrating. If you had to use any screenshot of that mechanic, it should have been the obvious "Join the Resistance" or "Stay Loyalist" moral choice in the tutorial, because anyone who's read any press release or the GR web site will know that's coming anyhow.
Re: narratives, not really sure what to do with that one. I don't think my earlier trailers have been more (or less) narrative than this one - but as so aptly proven above, I can be wrong (in which case this will be moron moment #163828 for me).
And I do appreciate it when folks point out stuff like this - I can't improve otherwise. As long as it's not just "u suck" - that's not exactly an informed critique of what I did wrong and how I might improve.

Another example is a mission in my "For All the Wrong Reasons" arc - on a VERY small Abandoned Tech lab map, you have to:
1) set up 4 Teleportation Dampening Fields
2) then trigger an emergency signal, which leads to
3) the boss and his ambush materializing in a previously empty lab
Since the map is really really small (like about a single room), you can see where everything needs to go, and it really does simulate the effect quite nicely that you've summoned the boss in almost on top of you so you can stomp him into the floor.

As for devs attending the Meet & Greet, War Witch, Noble Savage and Ghost Falcon will be there. Black Pebble and I will be there too.

Quote:The "Meet the X" series is a quick commercial for each of the archetypes. Back on the old forums, someone had started a thread on doing this type of video for each archetype, and people posted some hilarious suggestions. Eventually we had a mini-script for each of the archetypes, so I went ahead and saved the entire thread to my computer - thank God, because the thread didn't survive the forum transition.A "Meet the X" Series would be interesting to see. That is something maybe you and Steelclaw and work on. It just sucks the our characters don't have lip movements...
And I wouldn't mind seeing a TCSR trailer either.
Thank you for the time...

Villainside, my method is happily going after Scrapyard's followers...
"Oh look, nice gimongous mob..."
(My mastermind throws Oil Slick, Glue Arrow, then sets the Oil Slick on fire)
"Well that was quick..."
Heroside, I head into Terra Volta, land in the middle of a large mob of Sky Raiders, flatten the mob, and voila, tips!

Quote:I loved CITY OF OZ, and I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to get through filming the Wretch Strike Force without giving myself heart failure from laughing like an idiot the entire time. But making either one would be terrific fun.If you ever want to do a co-project with this thought in mind I would be happy to cobble together a full-length version of City of Oz (since Wizard of Oz is public access for parody now.)
Also wouldn't mind doing a feature length Wretch Task Force, Blue Steel Task Force, Nemesis Strike Force or the like. And any of those could be musicals... heh.
I'm full of it! Er... Ideas that is. I just don't have any talent (whatsoever) in the video side of things. Just an offer. I've seen your scripts (and stories) and know you don't really need any help in that department.

It was apparently also one of the more 'successful' ones in conning the players into thinking it was real, given the initial amount of panic it spawned on the forums. (Contrasted to the following year's joke, I think it was, when the game released its "Golden Age" expansion.)
I think that was also the first April Fool's joke they'd ever done on that scale, but I could be wrong - I don't remember a game-wide announcement like that prior to "Visual Sounds."

Quote:I have over thirty videos on my list to make for COH alone - retirement is not in my future any time soon. You do excellent work that's very appreciated & really reaches a different audience than the dev work, but I understand completely. The deadline of an issue's release puts you under a lot more pressure & you DO see something official paralleling your work. Doing other videos (NO RETIREMENT 4 YOU) would probably be less pressure and maybe even give you some more creative freedom.
Go for it!
...Just remember- when I win the lottery, I'm still funding your CoH feature-length film.
I wonder how much it would take to actually MAKE a CoH feature-length film. Need a script, need music, voice over work, plus the actual PLAYING/CODING time to make the thing...

Ummmm...
*long long LONG pause*
Actually... umm... I've been giving serious thought to focusing on music videos, parodies, etc, and actual storyline vids, and umm...
... not making trailers for the game anymore.
I mean, look at the GR trailer they did (and not the CGI one) - it was really, really good! Good music, it covered all the bases, gave a good flavour of the game (there's that British spelling again). And the exposure my videos give the game isn't nearly as widespread - the devs post a video, and within 24 hours it's everywhere. So my videos are sort of redundant, when you think about it. Don't get me wrong, I still love doing them - I just feel... kinda extraneous.

Quote:No, I'm just an American who's almost always used the British spellings for a lot of things (colours, theatres, etc, but I draw the line at aluminium). I don't know when I got into the habit, but it's stuck.Very nice video D_R, excellent as always! I especially liked the music, and the way you captured the Praetorian locations and characters.
My one extremely minor nitpick is that you spelled the name of issue 18 differently than the devs. You used the British spelling (grey) in your video, while they have been using the American spelling (gray) on the official material.
Your profile says you're from Seattle, but maybe you've been hanging out with Lady Grey a lot.
And thanks for the latest round of well-wishes! My vid is still collecting hits on YouTube (hopefully for a good long while)... I have this dense hope that maybe a potential employer will see it - at the very least, I'm hoping it's good enough to put in my demo reel.
