Quote:Don't let Samuraiko decieve you. She works for Paragon Studios, dupin' vids now. o.o
Really. Honest. 0.0Quote:If she isn't... she bloody well should be!
Credit where it's due though, that's one of the best bits of marketing I've seen come out of Paragon Studios. That actually worked - unlike some of the dire efforts we've seen in the past.
A very welcome, not to mention long overdue step in the right direction and here's to hope there's plenty more.Quote:I'll tell you what: When they tell me who made the video, I'll be more than happy to give them credit.
Until then, it's left up to me to decide who I want to credit, and I credit Samuraiko. If nothing else, she deserves partial credit, since I'm 97% certain her work inspired this video.
And I now live 25 miles north of Seattle. I'd apply there again in a heartbeat if I thought for one moment I even had a chance. But I don't.
So... yeah. Credit for this video goes to the Creative Services team for NCsoft in Seattle.

Quote:Admittedly on some level I agree with you, but I was comparing the vid in general to most of their previous ones. Instead of it being (as they're often dubbed) "animated patch notes", this actually makes the game look fun. (And I still laugh every time I see the hero faceplant into the snow.)The video is OK, well put together and all that, but honestly... Am I the only one who's rather underwhelmed by the winter event?
No decorations in the city, no change to the NPC flavour text, no NPC's bundled up against the cold and carrying gaily wrapped packages. Not even any frozen lakes which we KNOW exist as resources as they did it for the very first winter event. Absolutely NOTHING outside of the ski lodge to give the game that holiday feel. In fact, I'd go so far as to say the video is a little misleading as it seems to show more Christmassy stuff than you actually get.
Sorry Paragon Studios, but you missed again.
Quote:They sure did a great job but they still aren't as good as yours. You're still the best.
Quote:The teaser is ok, funny and all, but... the game looks much better on my computer... I use ultra-mode and when I watched the vid i was rather... disgusted by the optics... really lacking in that department. You will not attract new users this way. I know CoX can look better. Much better. Pump up the resolution/details and go ultra! Please!
Aside from that... good job.
Schlu.
Again, though, I was happier to see the video focusing more on the fun of the game.
(Me, I'd have probably gone a slightly more sinister holiday route, but I'm a drama skank.)

Quote:So true... so very true. For me, in Season 3, the floodgates open for "Human Nature/Family of Blood." For Season 4, it's "Turn Left", "Stolen Earth," and "Journey's End." And I just sobbed almost nonstop through the last half of "The End of Time, Part 2."Just finished the end of Season 2. Held it in until the Doctor got cut-off midsentence. Started bawling like a baby.
But I'm a sap.

Quote:In "Planet of the Dead", the psychic lady on the bus tells the Doctor, "he will knock four times" and how this is related to the end of the Doctor.Okay so I just finished watching the Doctor Who "Water of Mars" episode (movie in Netflix :P) since I finished season 4.
****SPOILERS AHEAD DON'T READ UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE SPOILED!****
.
Okay, so in this episode The Doctor says something along the lines of, "I've been told that I will hear 4 knocks before/when it's my time to die and I don't hear knocking, do you?"
I don't remember that ever being said. Which episode was that in? I did skip like 2 episodes in season 3 and 4 (maybe 2 even)....any clues (maybe I did see the episode it was said in but don't remember it)?
This bit is resolved near the end of part 2 of "The End of Time"... just when you think it's over and done, and everything is fine...

Quote:Oh, suuuuuuuuure. You toss me off the video throne, and then you QUIT before I can lawfully challenge you and reclaim it. I accuse thee of cowardice, neglect, and dereliction of your duty in providing videos for the community.I quit City of Heroes.
No, really, I did. A few weeks ago, I told some of the people closer to me that I was quitting, sent my feedback quietly to a red name, and even reevaluated my budget now that this $15 a month as freed up. One of the last things said red name told me was "I hope that you find something in a future Issue that can bring you back." I politely told them something akin to "Ya right" and resumed closing up shop.
Then I read the Issue 19 notes in detail on I19's launch day.
"Character switching without logging out? Cool, now I can mix up my play styles in one sitting more easily. Nifty, if I were staying."
"Power Animations? Well, Marcian, the only reason you didn't pick supernatural powers was because it bothered you that all characters used the same animations. So, that opens up whole new power sets for you."
"Incarnates... so now my level 50 is relevant again. Wait, and the story makes him stronger than Statesman or Recluse!?"
"Praetoria got fleshed out some more!? Didn't I just vent that there was no auto mission generator? Did they read my mind!? You said you'd only use Seers for good!"
-----
In all seriousness, Issue 19 handily takes care of the vast majority of the reasons I'm quitting. I knew the update was coming for a while. There's a difference, however, between hearing something will be happening soon and actually logging on and having said options laid out before you.
I tried to leave, but they keep me in. Again and again. I can only imagine that I20, in all its shrouded secrecy, is going to crabshell us with some incredible other feature that keeps me in the game.
Good job, Red Names. You all collaborate on a fine project.

I wish there were a way to load the old code via demofile, so I could render modern scenes in the older format.

I second this. Especially since with the way the drivers in PC drive, it's already like they're sliding around on snow without all-season tires.

Actually, this is the kind of ad that should be showing in movie theatres (not a full-on preview, but like when the lights are still up and they're doing local commercials and refreshment ads and whatnot).
No, it was not mine. I wish it were - the whole thing was just fantastic. From the snow on the logos to the Hallmark-card-voiceover, it just worked.
Quote:OMG !!!! THAT RAAAAAAWKED !!!!!

Quote:TURN LEFT remains probably my favorite episode of New Who. There are many that were brilliant, but that one I adore to pieces. If you are an obsessive geek like me, it's worth trying to watch them all in this order as it does add to the fun, there's a lot of little references and comments that connect the shows, the Turn Left episode, for instance, mentions a villain from the Sarah Jane show.
Then comes this gem set just after the end of Season Four, courtesy of the Proms...

Slight threadjack - apparently a few folks participating in this discussion decided to try my latest arc ("Kill or Cure") and gave it feedback (not surprising, everyone gave almost identical feedback on the same mission). I fully agree on the feedback and intend to make the suggested changes. Still, I'm glad the folks who played it LIKED it (4 and 5 star ratings), I appreciate the /tells and the PMs with suggestions, and just wanted to say thanks!

What I want to know is why Vanessa DeVore hooked up with Wu Yin, instead of "The Most Interesting Man in Praetoria." And can you imagine the awesomeness of THAT kid?!

As a Doctor Who fan, I love the radio mission to recover the Hand of Omega.
As a Babylon 5 fan, there's the radio mish to retrieve the Book of K'Gar.
Then there's the nod to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Archmage Tarixus tells you while forging the Blackwand that "blood is compulsory."
And there are others I've contributed to the In-game References on the Paragon Wiki.

It's a weirdness in that if you look at the map on 'page 1' of the mission, it tells you what you can and can't have on the map, and in how many numbers. But when you get to 'page 2', those numbers don't always align with what you saw. Damned if I know why. :S

Building a new arc and have run into this problem on three of the four missions I've created so far... The only enemies that appear on the map are ambushes, patrols, and mobs surrounding captives. Other than that, the maps are empty. (And me testing it with a MM on 0/x4.)
Praetorian Biological Lab Map>Small>Map 5... I tried filling it with Seers, and then filling it with Neuron's Clockwork. No luck.
Unique>Unique>Midnighter Club... tried filling it with Rikti. Nope.
Praetorian Tech Lab Map>Medium>Map 5... tried filling it with Neuron's Clockwork and Anti-Matter's Clockwork. No luck there either.
The ONLY map on the arc that's spawning properly is Unique>Arachnos>Mercy Island - Widow Tower, and I filled it with Arachnos.
Filed a bug report, but has anyone else had this happen?

Quote:Rumour had it a while back there was an Accolade called Chronomaster, for getting ALL the Ouro badges, Entrusted with the Secret, plus doing all the Menders' TFs. If the only thing it did was unlock the Menders' costume pieces, I would be on that like white on rice.I still think there should be a badge for completing all of the Ouroboros TFs (Lazarus, Silos, and Tesseract/Twilight's Son).
And the badge would be "Hey Man Nice Shot - you've taken out enough snipers that they'd rather jump off the building than face you."
Quote:I want a badge for destroying 100 of those "Lab Equipment" objects that have a chance of giving a temp buff or debuff in that particular tech lab room.
Others to consider:
250 Rikti Communications Officers - "We Interrupt This Transmission"
100 Malta Sappers - "Running on Empty"
100 Storm Elementals - "Rider of the Storm"
150 Rikti Pylons - "Shieldbreaker"

Quote:Oh I'm sure I'm a minority. I was just curious if I were ALONE. Apparently, I'm not. And believe me, I am all for getting equivalent XP to what I would in the game... what I meant was, if it's a lightning fast dash-in-do-this-get-out-not-a-lot-of-xp mission, same as you'd get if you stealthed a mish, would you get upset?I'll be nice in saying this since I like you Samuraiko, but you're a minority.
[snip]
I'm still of the opinion that the AE buildings should be nuked and arcs should be able to be put IN THE GAME WORLD by authors, and available via level appropriate in game world CONTACTS.
And I've said for a while that I think that rather than making stuff "Dev's Choice," the really good arcs should become new actual missions for the contacts in the game (like the filler missions between the uber story arcs we get from contacts).
Quote:Hell yes. I have played more than one arc that had a great story and poor rewards. The problem is that everyone thinks their story is great, and the resources available to filter out the crap are inadequate. Sturgeon's Law applies.
As an aside, I try to play as many of the arcs I see in people's signatures as I can. I figure they care enough about their work to advertise it, I can do them the courtesy. Most of them are so bad I don't finish them. None of them have been so good that I would replay them. There's no useful, reliable way to find decent arcs.
As a matter of interest, I'm curious which AE arcs you've really liked (if any), whether they were in someone's signature or not, so as to get an idea of your taste.

This then raises in my mind a question for everyone who decries the arcs with lousy writing...
... if there were arcs that were well-written, with an engaging story, well-designed enemies, a good and varied use of maps, etc., but that occasionally might be lighter on XP (the way FedEx missions can be sometimes), would you still play them?
For example... a 5-mission arc. Mission 1: solid middle-of-the-road mish for difficulty (mid-sized map, not a DA). Mission 2: a small map, empty save for a boss and his minions beat the snot out of him for (imagine sneaking into the hideout of Jimmy the Fish). Mission 3: large map, a couple glowies, an ambush or two, still not a DA (Jimmy's been messing with something impressive... time to take it away). Mission 4: mid-sized map, rescue some poor schmuck, ambush and a boss (Joey the Squirrel, responsible for abducting the schmuck in the first place). Mission 5: whole hog, mid-sized map DA to impress upon said faction that the good guys will win and they'll remember that fact each time it rains.
A couple of these missions would be a bit light on XP. But if the arc were really well done, the maps not overused, and some good original designs with well balanced powers, would you still play it?
I would.

Personal favorites include:
Sky Raiders - so much potential here, I'd love to see more. Sure, the Council has a volcano, but these guys have a seabase, plus at least two airstrips!
Legacy Chain - The "I'm never sure if you're good or bad" group, I wish they had more airtime heroside.
Carnival of Shadows - while that mez thing gets old real fast, I can't help but cheer for one of the few female factions in the game.
Crey - don't ask me why, but for a while, I drew IMMENSE satisfaction out of running around Brickstown, finding those huge mobs of Crey troopers harassing some poor schmucks, and beating the living daylights out of them. Not to mention they're an equal opportunity faction.

Quote:Bein, Rossdale, and Revenant, I suspect, were created to give each of the members of the Phalanx a 'nemesis.' The storylines of Bein and Revenant I could almost accept (were they better written and designed), as they explain why Positron left Crey and how Synapse got his unwanted powers from them, but Rossdale is pretty much a ripoff melange of Countess Crey and Vanessa DeVore.I finally finished the Freedom Phalanx today. What a read :-( This book was created to intro Positron clearly. This book was weird. None of the villains except for Recluse and Protean are in the Wiki. Bein, Carol Rossdale, and Revenant who are they? It's like they made up new stuff for this book. I'm glad this is over. I'm just so glad. Positron is now my least favorite character in all of CoH now. I happily move on to the fan fiction.
Wishing you better success with your wanderings through the fan fiction. And don't be afraid to try your own, too!
