That's an older model, so it's not going to run CoH at the highest settings, but it should do reasonably well.

Quote:Don't worry about the files, they'll copy over fine. Follow my guide on how to copy them over (it's in my signature).1. I know there are a lot of text files that COH stores on a computer these days for settings, AE stuff, etc. Can I just swap these over, easy-peasy like? I'm assuming so, but felt I'd better ask. Just copy and paste onto a flash drive, right? I seem to recall that anything done with demo-record doesn't generally like to be moved from one computer to another, though...
Quote:2. Is there anything comperable to FRAPS for OSX? I like that for screenshots and to record in-game video. I am willing to pay a reasonable price for such a program.
Quote:3. Can I switch in and out of COH as easily as I can in Windows? I can't think of a gaming session that lasted longer than 20 minutes where I didn't hit the Windows key to go to my internet browser, music player or something. COH always handled that well (better than anything else I know of) in that it'd keep running while I brought stuff up. Can I expect that level of cool with the OSX version? Not that I think OSX can't do it - I just don't know how CIDER will take to it.
Hopefully it's all in my guide.
Quote:I am not new to Macs or OSX (been in the newspaper industry for nearly 10 years), but I am new to them for gaming. I try to be as platform agnostic as possible, with only my gaming being platform-bound (consoles, Windows, etc). I might look into Boot Camp or Parallels to see if my other games can make the jump over as well - I have no problems with the idea of running Windows 7 (which I adore) on this machine, either part time or exclusively, but would prefer to run OSX on it predominantly since I've already got a wonderful W7 machine -
Overall the upgrade might be worth it, since 10.6.3 not only has newer graphics drivers, but it also contains fixes for network stuff that can affect gameplay.
Adding more memory is always better if you run a lot of apps at the same time, but 4 gigs is more than CoH will ever take up by itself. -
Quote:From the options list you posted, it should connect to the U.S. Training Room and patch properly (except that the patch server is currently overloaded due to Open Beta, so be patient). You shouldn't need to change the plist at all.hey, cuppa.
unfortunately, i've downloaded from the ftp//client.coh.com/ and downloaded the us test server. here's what i get which is different from the others posted:
Meanwhile I'll see what I can do getting the attention of someone who can make sure the *latest* training room client is available for download. -
Issue 17 (now in open beta) seems to have solved the issue - it's been tested on an ATI-based iMac by me and one person who was experiencing the problem. If you have the Training Room client installed (follow the instructions in my Guide) you can try it out to make sure. More testing is always better.

Here's what I use for Ultra settings:
FSAA: Off (until 2x becomes less processor intensive)
Shadows: Shadow Map - High
Environmental Reflections: Low (there isn't a spectacular difference between Low and Ultra)
Water Effects: High (my World Detail is 100% - this setting is an ideal match)
Ambient Occlusion: Off (don't like the "dirty walls" effect it gives) -
Issue 17 Open Beta has begun! If you have any questions about Ultra Mode on the Mac, please post them here and I'll do my best to answer them.
To start though:
- Yes, the Mac client supports ALL Ultra Mode features, and for a bonus, it now supports FSAA.
- Since the new Ultra features are rather power-hungry, experiment with them a bit and find a good balance between appearance and performance. For instance, the Medium setting on Shadow Maps is almost as good as High, the Reflection Effects don't really vary much from Low to Ultra, Water Effects probably looks better on High unless you have World Detail set above 100%, and FSAA doesn't seem to make much difference on small screens.
- Water reflections of characters being upside down, Vertical Sync not working, reversed-RGB cursors, certain zones being laggy are all known issues.
- Combining Ambient Occlusion with either FSAA or Shadow Map causes a severe performance drop.
- There is also currently an issue being worked on where the Mac client may start up with corrupted graphics or a black screen.
If you're currently using the Mac client, please visit the Training Room and try out the Ultra settings if you can. If there are any major problems that haven't been noticed, now's the time to find them.
EDIT: Added update - the "black screen" when using Cmd-Tab or Cmd-Return on the ATI-based iMacs seems to have been fixed on the Training Room. Feel free to test that more if you can. -
If you mean looking around without moving the character - hold down the scroll wheel button.
-
This is a known new issue with 10.6.3 - I'll PM you with more details.
-
The mouse occasionally "resetting" to a new location is a known issue, and so are the reversed-RGB cursors.
-
I've already been tracking this issue, and the devs have been notified.

Quote:Check ifixit.com, they have a listing of some parts for iMacs, and one of them might be a replaceable video card (I'm not that familiar with the iMac innards).Weird. I seem to recal at the time of purchase there were options, but I have a bad memory and don't trust that recollection farther than it can throw me.
Keep in mind, though, that once you replace your own video card it no longer matches the specs for your serial number, so your warranty will be voided. -
Does it do that every time or just sometimes? I do get an occasional black screen/lockout when switching back and forth that's due to memory corruption in the Mac client, but it's not every time.
-
The Alt-Tab issue with ATI cards pre-dates 10.6.3. If you have an ATI card use Cmd-Return instead to go to windowed mode, and then minimize.
I'm going to re-submit this bug and some similar ones very soon. -
No - let run once first, and after it's done with the Live patching, then create a shortcut to the newly created cohupdater.exe (in Program Files/City of Heroes or Program Files (x86)/City of Heroes) with the -test added to it.
-
Find cohupdater.exe and put it on the desktop, and then launch it from there. It'll fix the permissions issues.

MacOS X 10.6.3 update was released today by Apple!
I tested it and determined that it does bring a small but noticeable performance increase with the newer video driver, at least on my Macbook Pro.
So if you're waiting for someone else to upgrade and test it...that was me, and I say it's good. -
Quote:It says "OR" - for some reason there's a variation in the way the CoH for Mac client installs on some systems. If you have a "coh" folder you don't need to worry about "Program Files" or "City of Heroes".
4. Right-click the City of Heroes application and select "Show Package Contents".
5. Open the Contents, then Resources, then transgaming, then c_drive, then either "coh" or "Program Files" and then "City of Heroes". If there is no such folder, run the updater once to get it to create the folder.
That variation seems to cause some unusual problems though, so the next version of my guide will recommend a repair procedure to fix it. -
Whichever CoH Edition you choose, the Mac client is freely downloadable from your account. Actually, I believe you can even set up an account without an initial purchase beyond the first month's service (someone correct me if I'm wrong) and then download the game client.
But then you'd have to pay separately for the "expansion packs" the packages come with:
The Architect Edition specifically gives you a few additional bonuses with your new account: One month of free game time, and one of two "upgrade packs", either the Cyborg Pack or Magic Pack. Since the monthly fee is $14.99, and the pack is $9.99 separately, you're getting a $4 discount by purchasing Architect Edition.
Good vs. Evil has different items: Jump pack, Pocket D teleport power, and hero and villain costume pieces. Again, at a $4 discount, since that pack is available separately for $9.99 too.
Also, if you purchase the physical box of Architect, it'll save you quite a bit of client download time. The downloadable CoH client doesn't contain most of the game files - they download after installation via the patcher. -
Quote:That works the same as going to Users > (Your Name) > Library > Preferences and throwing out City of Heroes Preferences.Okay, had the same issue. Would try to open CoH up, it wouldn't respond. tried clearing the cache, still nothing. BUT THIS DID WORK-----> Preference cleaner http://www.echomist.co.uk/software/P...eCleaner.shtml its a free app and very small. You may need to readjust your preferences in game as far as window scales and stuff but this should work

I tested the VMWare/Parallels thing in 64-bit mode with CoH for Mac running.
Parallels did cause a panic as soon as the virtual guest OS was started. VMWare ran fine with no problems.
Looking at the panic log, it looks like Parallels is trying to address some kind of memory address that no longer exists. It's basically a problem for the Parallels people to fix. -
Try downloading it from here:
ftp://client.coh.com/
Make sure you choose the correct region (US or EU) and download the appropriate DMG file that starts with "Mac".
Also go to help.ncsoft.com and send a ticket. They probably want to know if the version for download on the website is corrupted. -
I don't remember if I was using 32-bit or 64-bit last time I tested. If that's the difference, though, then the drivers for Parallels/VMWare are not happy in 64-bit mode.
