Police boxes were painted red in Glasgow up until the late 1960's. After that they were all blue.

I still think it was a mistake to 'remove' Statesman from the game.
The game has lost it's one true iconic character ... and more worrying in doing so it's possibly lost its very identity as well.
What advantage has actually been gained by taking him out of the game? Or to put it another way ... Who gains from Statesman's removal? -
The fact that Statesman isn't there makes the whole thing seem a little redundant in my opinion.
-
I have to say that the new loading screen art is pretty poor.
Here's hoping it gets rotated out soon. -
Quote:While I do respect differing opinions and viewpoints:
If we had wanted to kill off States out of spite, we would have done so years ago. There's been nothing keeping us from doing so.
The death of Statesman (and Sister Psyche) was part of a huge change to the City of Heroes franchise; the move to a Hybrid model. We wanted to do something big, something impactful and something that could give us more avenues to make you, the player, the primary focus.
Were there obvious allusions and comparisons made to Jack and his relation to States? Of course. There's plenty of press opportunities there, and it's something that drew interest from veteran players, current players and new players alike, as well as gaming journalists familiar with the franchise. I absolutely agree that there was some real world symbolism, as Matt expressed in an article he wrote on the topic, however to say there was malice or prejudice involved would be spurious.
This industry is entirely too small to burn bridges.
There's also the point that the SSA1 stories weren't directly written by Matt. I believe most of the writing was handled by Dr. Aeon.
Ok.
I'll accept what you're saying as being truthful, and I withdraw the 'spiteful' accusation.
I just hope that you can see why I (and others) hold that opinion.
Statesman's removal from the game is IMHO detrimental to the game as a whole - if indeed it is the case that he will not be brought back. -
Quote:Yes, only you are allowed to be condescending and patronizing. My apologies.
Like I said ... This is ... was a friendly discussion.
It was you that brought in the 'assumption' nonsense.
I have an opinion only on what happened.
Putting that opinion out doesn't make me condescending or patronizing.
I'm finished with this.
Have a good day. -
Quote:You know what they say about assumptions...
And, yeah, that's all your accusation is. Spite? Seriously?
Let's keep it civil here. This is a friendly discussion.
That's my take on the reasoning for killing Statesman
What's your take on it?
Statesman was easily the most recognizable character in the game. I'm not sure how you can apply 'maybe' to that? -
I got the following names;
Vital Spark - Emp/elec defender
Patriot Star - SJ/shield scrapper -
Statesman was the iconic figure of this game.
He was hardly used by the writers following the split.
So, no that's not just my opinion ... that was reality.
You saw him as a douchey - others didn't, so that is your opinion.
If he had no weaknesses, how come he's dead? -
-
Quote:Also he wasn't a comic book character, if you're going to pick nits.
The fact remains that "death" for fictional characters, especially comic book characters, is a revolving door, not a one way chute to the incinerator.
I've seen people nurse sillier grudges over the years, but that's a really goofy one.
I'm not picking nits .... it's the focal point of what I'm saying .....
Miller has killed off Jack's character - the most recognizable and iconic character that this game has.
Miller has stated that the character will remain 'dead'.
The reason for this is the key, because it certainly doesn't do the game any good.
My suspicion is that Miller killed off Statesman simply because he was Jack's character - and that IMHO is spiteful. -
Quote:so what?
Arthur Conan Doyle declared Sherlock Holmes was dead forever when he published The Final Problem. Years later he rose from the dead in The Adventure of the Empty House.
Fictive death just isn't death, however adamant the creator is about it.
There's a big difference here.
Holmes was Doyle's own creation.
My distaste for the game right now is my perception of the motivation for killing Statesman. -
Quote:Matt Miller was recorded as saying this was an attempt to move away from Cryptic Studios, I believe in one of the Ustreams. Whatever the reason that drove them to kill the game's single most recognisable character and the face on every item of promotional material ever made, it certainly wasn't the desire to tell a good story. Which is fitting, considering the abominable story that carried that act forth.
Spot on. -
Quote:Yes indeed he did die - as have other prominent comic hero and villains.Superman "died" too.
In the context of a superhero story, death is just another plot point, no more permanent or irreversible than having the hero get a haircut, or break up with their spouse.
The difference here is quite obvious but I'll carry on anyway.
Superman and other prominent comic characters that have been killed are brought back.
Miller has stated that he has no plans to do this with Statesman. -
-
Quote:How do you know it was out of spite? Can you provide a source on that one?
Yeah ... Let's take the game's most recognizable and marketable signature hero and kill him in a pretty pointless way - and then publicly come out and say that the character will remain dead.
What other motive do you want to go for? -
I'm not tired of CoX or the Paragon Market.
What has taken the wind right out my sails with this game is the removal of Statesman - and the underhanded way it was engineered.
I still can't believe that the game's most recognisable character should be written out of the game, purely out of spite.
I thought Miller would be above that sort of thing. -
Quote:My understanding of it is that the set will be made available to all in the near future.I've heard conflicting stories. Some say they'll be cycled back in, others say they may eventually end up cycled into the general market. I'm a T9 VIP and not only am I fine with the latter option, I'd prefer it.
Exactly how near is anyone's guess, but I very much doubt that they wont be available to buy at some point ... erm ... 'soon' -
Quote:You know, now you come to mention it ... I can't remember the last time I was sent to talk to a PVP contact or to speak to Wincott. But aren't those purchases per character?
... y'know, other than the (specifically redside) bloody bay one, I can't remember the last time I saw those. Admittedly I might be blanking them out.
Anyone else notice this? -
Quote:I believe you're right about that./auctionhouse is actually new with Freedom and is a fairly high tier Paragon Rewards perk, I believe.
Another command that I think is unlocked at the same time is /vault, which gives you instant, remote access to your security vault. -
I have to admit that my enthusiasm for the Oncoming Storm has been somewhat blunted by Miller's heavy handed and clearly spiteful treatment of the Statesman and Sister Psyche characters.
-
I'm quite happy to use the /AH command whilst I'm in the university in Steel.
I feel all smug now -
Quote:100% agreed. They have awesome maps and some cool gameplay. But if you love story, SSA is not for you. The storyline is complete garbage.
The storyline is quite a simply an amateurishly written vehicle for getting rid of Statesman.
To kill Statesman is one thing - and I didn't agree with it, but to write him out of the game lore is quite simply childish vindictiveness on Miller's part. -
Welcome back Khorak
We were forming a Khan TF the other week and were one player short.
Someone just mentioned GG's name on team chat and she chimed in a few seconds later on Defiant Events.
It was very spooky, but we did have GG charging into the mobs - as his her style -
Indeed they are.
Just looking to see what's added or changed......
