  1. First off, I'm not thrilled about the hybrid business model Paragon Studios is going with. But it's going to happen whether I like it or not, so I'm not going to waste time complaining pointlessly about it. I'll wait and see how it plays out before making any decisions regarding my account status.

That's not what I wanted to address here though.

With the number of posts I've seen concerning character transfers to the VIP server, it concerns me that there is going to be a large exodus of VIP players moving to a server that free players can't access. This is potentially a very bad thing.

First, if enough currently subscribed players move their primary gaming activities to the VIP server, it is going to leave a false impression on new F2P players that the game is a lot more dead than it really is. With the "going F2P means the game is dying" impression that they may have already, logging in to find very few subscribed players and a lot of free players will just reinforce that impression. If a free player gets the impression that the game is in danger of going under, they will be much less likely to spend any money on it.

Second, those free players that stick around long enough to realize that a lot of people are on a server they can't access, it is going to make them feel like we don't think they are good enough to hang out with us. I know *I'd* get that impression if I started playing and the veterans seemed to be avoiding me by playing on a server I can't play on. I don't think I'd be too keen on playing a game in which I feel like a second class citizen. (and sadly enough, it seems that some people are already seeing free players that way, and they don't even exist yet)

Third, it is going to be hard enough for free players to get any questions they have answered without the more knowledgeable players being completely out of their reach. They can only talk in Local, Help, and Team chat. I'd be happy to answer questions myself, but if I'm super jumping through a zone the odds of me hearing a new player asking a question in Local aren't very good.

And lastly, the rush to go to the VIP server has me concerned about the quality of the community in general.

Granted, I understand that some people may be doing it to consolidate a multi-server SG, or to play with friends who have their main on another server. But, I really have to wonder how many people are wanting to do it just to not be bothered by the free players. That doesn't sound much like the "helpful and friendly community" I've come to love about this game. To be honest, it sounds more like the "collection of elitist snobs" I was afraid this game would turn into if we went to a free to play business model.

If that's the way the community evolves (or devolves) I'm going to be sad indeed, because it will mean one of my last reasons for sticking around as long as I have will have gone away.

So, please, take some of those things into consideration before deciding to jump ship to the VIP server and leaving all the free players to fend for themselves.
  2. I've been saying "freebie" in conversation with my wife about it.

I wasn't making any distinction between free and premium players though, I was just using the term to describe those players who aren't paying a monthly subscription fee.

    Powerset Respecs

Because it would be HIGHLY gameable.

    Example:

A Stone tank is one of the hardest things in the game to kill after it hits level 32 and gets Granite Armor. The price the powerset as a whole pays for that is being relatively weak until it gets to that point.

Now, if you could level that tank as a WP/DM, which levels very quickly, you could skip past the weak levels of Stone Armor and jump right in at level 34, when you can have fully slotted Granite Armor.

You've just bypassed the weaker early levels, which is that powerset's price for being so powerful later.

Or you could solo level a Mind/Kin controller (which solos fairly well), and then respec into Fire/Kin after Fulcrum Shift becomes available.

Or level a /Regen scrapper (which is strong in the early game) and respec into SR or Shield (which are endgame powerhouses)

Or a Claws/WP brute being respecced into an SS/Fire brute for level 50 fire ambush farming.

Basically, it comes down to the fact that all of the powersets in the game are balanced that way. If that set is extremely powerful in the late game, it struggles in the early game. If you could switch your powersets after leveling, you could get the good (late game power) without the bad (early game weakness).
  4. I'm not thrilled about it either. But since there is nothing I can do about it, and it would be a waste of time to sit around complaining, I'll see how it plays out before I decide whether they will continue getting my money.

What I'm more annoyed about is that Going Rogue is now going to be included in the cost of a regular subscription. It's not that it's going to be free, that part doesn't bother me.

If you look at the FAQ about CoH:Freedom, it explicitly states that they have been planning this move for "well over a year", which means that the devs knew very well that GR would be free, and knew roughly when it would be free, at the same time they were charging us $30 for it. Makes me feel a little taken advantage of. I'd almost go so far as to say it makes me feel like I've been ripped off. They KNEW it would be free, and knew WHEN it would be free, and charged me for it anyway. Things like that annoy me a little bit, seems like a bit of a bait and switch. The whole "Hey, this thing will be free eventually, let's try and squeeze some money out of people and not TELL them they will get it for free if they wait long enough."

And no, CoV isn't quite the same thing. I had no problem paying for that because it was designed and marketed as a separate game. Going Rogue was an expansion that required the existing game. If they knew it was going to be given away with CoH:Freedom, why bother charging us for it in the first place?

It's the apparent shift in the company's stance that concerns me more than anything else. We no longer seem to be valued players, we're just an income source now. I understand that's all we ever really were, but there doesn't seem to be much pretense of us being anything else anymore.

Is this a bug, or working as intended?
Not being able to use her store is irrelevant to you.

You're level 50, Serafina only sells level 35 and 40 enhancements, so even if you could buy them, you couldn't use them.
  6. It's possible to softcap Smashing/Lethal/Energy and still get a decent amount to Ranged. I'll see if I saved my build and post it for you.

Here you go. Softcapped to S/L/E and gets around 31% to ranged to cover the other damage types. You could easily replace Combat Jumping with Hover if you like, and it wouldn't make any difference in the build. I like Combat Jumping for the Immobilize protection though, so I'll be keeping it. I also took the AoEs late, as I prefer more of a single target blapper style with this character.

Couple other things jumped out at me after I opened the build.

    1) You slotted a Winter's Gift Slow Resistance IO...but you skipped Temperature Protection, which has slow resistance built in. You gain 2 things by taking Temp Protection: slow resistance, and a place to slot a Steadfast Res/Def without burning a slot, since you don't need to add any more slots to it.

    2) You pushed Fiery Embrace off into the 40s, and you only put a single recharge enhancement on it. Fiery Embrace adds Fire damage to all your attacks for 20 seconds after you activate it. That ends up being a big damage boost if you run through a couple attack chains with it active. I'd take it as soon as it's available and put 3 recharges in it ASAP.

Here's what I would do with your build. I wouldn't personally take Teleport, but I figured it was for concept so I left it in, makes a good place for KB protection at least.

I would focus on typed defense rather than positional for this character.

You generally get typed defense bonuses for fewer slots than positional ones, so you can get your defense bonuses and still have some slots to play with for other stuff.

If you go with positional defense, you are pretty much forced into 5 or 6 slotting attacks that may not otherwise need them while chasing bonuses.

If you were Katana/Dark I might give different advice, because Dark has Cloak of Darkness to stack defenses with. With Fiery Aura lacking any kind of native defense power, you will probably benefit more from typed defense.

Also, you're going to want Blazing Aura WAY before level 38. While you're leveling, Blazing Aura is a huge percentage of your AoE damage output. I'd slot it better too, 3 Eradication is NOT enough for a toggle power.
  10. I tend toward melee characters myself.

Out of my 6 50s, half of them are melee oriented, and all of them are offensively oriented.

I suck at the support role and I don't really enjoy it, so my one and only level 50 Defender is a Rad/Sonic. The rest are 2 scrappers, a brute, and 2 blasters. I prefer being in the offensive role, and leaving the defensive role to those who enjoy it or are better suited to it.

I'm far too frenetic when I play to watch what everyone else is doing like a hawk, like a good support player does. So I don't try to do something I'm not good at, and everyone on the team is much happier for it. I'm good at playing offensive characters, so I bring more to a team with one of them than a support character that I suck at playing.

Your origin has no real effect on your gameplay.

The only thing it affects are which stores you shop at for your Single Origins and Dual Origins. A lot of people tend to make their characters Mutant origin because the names of the enhancements are the easiest to understand for Mutants (it tells you what it enhances right in the name), but it doesn't particularly matter. If you don't mind figuring out which enhancements you need (they're color coded too), you can just pick whichever origin fits your character concept the best.

The only other things origin affects is the starter temp power your character gets, which isn't really a huge deal, and you get bonus damage for certain vet reward powers, but it's going to be a while before you need to concern yourself with those.

    Welcome to the game!

    Free the names!

Things I would be okay with regarding the freeing up of names:

-I had no major problem with the name freeing scripts that have been run in the past. Characters below level 6 on long inactive accounts probably aren't going to get much consideration, even if the player does come back.

-Freeing of names on trial accounts seems like a good idea. Say, if the trial account wasn't upgraded to a full account within 6 months of the trial period ending, make those names fair game.

-I also would be okay with freeing the names of characters under level 6 on active accounts, provided that character has not been logged in for a set amount of time. Like if a level 2 character hasn't been logged in for 1,000 days, their name becomes fair game. It's a safe bet that if you have an active account with a level 2 character logged off for 1,542 days, you probably don't care too much about that name. And if you want to keep that name, it's as simple as logging that character in to keep it safe.

I don't have a problem with freeing up names, it's the attitude of "You left for a while, you don't deserve to keep them!" that I have a problem with.

Caveat: I also believe that any character name that matches the global name of that account exactly in spelling and punctuation should be immune from name purges. So, since my global is @Claws and Effect, my character named Claws and Effect should remain safe from a name purge (not that I'm especially worried, he's been level 50 since 2006)

There was no outrage voiced by returning players after the last two times the script was run.

So it's quite obvious that it's not as big a deal to people as you want everyone to believe.
    There's a bit of a flaw there.

We are all aware that only a fraction of the playerbase uses the forums at all.

Now, those of us who DO use the forums regularly (like you and I) are less likely to quit for extended periods unless we have no choice. That's because to us, this is more than just a video game, it is a community that we enjoy being a part of. Thus, we are highly unlikely to be losing a name in any purge that happens.

On the other hand, those who view CoH as nothing more than a video game aren't likely to use the forums in the first place, and even less likely to come and complain when they come back after a break and find their names gone. They will more likely just cancel their subscription again and go somewhere else.

You flaw there is assuming that anyone who has a problem with losing a name will automatically come to the forums to complain, when in actuality, those most likely to lose a name are also the least likely to come to the forums with their complaint.
  14. Every genre of games has things that are the same across all games of that genre.

A first person shooter will have similar controls across all games, and they will have a variety of weapons to use. There is some variety in the visuals and the storyline, but a first person shooter will play very similarly to any other first person shooter.

A fighting game will have various characters, and it will have controls to punch, kick, and use special moves. The controls will all do roughly the same thing between games, but again the visuals and details differ.

Action/Adventure games differ a little more, but the basics remain the same. You control your character to complete certain objectives, and you will usually obtain power-ups as you progress.

Action RPGs take the character progression of traditional RPGs and mix in elements of action games.

When you ask someone what kind of games they enjoy playing, most of the time your response will be "first person shooters" or "fighting games". People will just tell you the genre of games they like, because that is the kind of gameplay they enjoy. A first person shooter that doesn't play like a first person shooter will probably not be very popular among the people who enjoy first person shooters.

When you strip it down, most MMOs are, at their most basic, action RPGs that many people are playing at the same time as you. As such, they will feel very similar to each other.

It is understandable that people unfamiliar with MMOs will be a little confused at first. If you had never played a first person shooter before and sat down to play Call of Duty or Halo, you would probably experience a similar confusion. The same goes for fighting games, or just about any other genre of game you care to name.

So, the silence of people who do not have active accounts is to be taken as an indication that those people are okay with losing their names?

Even though by not having an active account those people are not permitted to post on the forums in order to voice their displeasure.

    Okay then.

    I have seen it frequently.

    "I'm right!"

    "Really? Prove it."

"Didn't you just see where I SAID I was right? That proves I am!"

    Free the names!

Besides, as noted upthread, the devs have a reason to not run the script, so I imagine they have something good up their sleeve.
    It's simple business sense.

If you have a potentially returning customer, wouldn't you want them to be able to come back and have everything as they left it?

Or would you tell them, "Sorry, you left so we gave your stuff away"

Speaking for myself here, if I were forced to stop paying for my account for 6 months and came back to find that all my character names had been taken away, I would very likely quit playing and never give NCSoft another dime of my money.

Would YOU be okay with it if you had to quit for an extended period of time and came back to find that your favorite character's name had been taken because someone else wanted it while you were gone?

Or would you chalk it up to "I guess if I really wanted that name I'd have kept paying for an account I couldn't afford for a game I was physically incapable of playing."

Sucks for any military personel that get deployed for extended periods of time. Quite frequently the military will tell you that you're being deployed for a year, it's amazing how often they extend that because they happen to need you where you are. So, the guy who gets deployed to Afghanistan for 2 years finally resubscribes to play his favorite game when he returns home, and finds that his characters' names have all been stripped from him. That'd be great, wouldn't it?

Strip the names from un-upgraded trial accounts, that I have no issue with. Start stripping away names from formerly actively played accounts and you're going to have former customers that will REMAIN "former" customers. But that's okay, because YOU got the name you wanted, who cares if that guy who wanted to come back and subscribe again decided not to because of it.

    Pretty much this.

When you are telling someone something that goes in direct opposition to how we have all understood it to work for years (confirmed by the devs even), it falls to you to prove that you are right, not to others to prove that you are wrong.

Drops are completely random, it has always been that way, and I have NEVER heard of anyone cracking any code that will force a drop from the game.

If you are convinced that you are correct, and that not only every other player, but the devs themselves, are wrong, well, we're going to need just a LITTLE more than your word for it.

At the price point my /Regen scrapper is at, I know I will die before other scrappers built at a similar price point.

My BS/DA is around 3-5 times more survivable than my Claws/Regen, even though I spent close to half a billion LESS on the BS/DA's build.

From what I've found, you CAN build a Regen to be ridiculously survivable, but it costs you a hell of a lot more to do than getting an SR to the same point. It will run you billions to get a Regen to the same point an SR gets to after 500 million spent.

    Regen issues

So, why is 40% -regen resistance and 20% -recharge resistance so much to ask for?

Does even that small of an amount of debuff resistance suddenly make /Regen overpowered? Even if it is unenhanceable debuff resistance?

I'm not asking for godmode, and I'm not asking to be completely immune to those debuffs. I'm just asking for smaller amounts of those debuffs to not be so crippling. I just want enough debuff resistance so that when I do get debuffed, I can pop Instant Healing and be about where I was before I got debuffed.

And for the record: A lot of recharge debuffs go hand in hand with movement speed debuffs. It's really difficult to kite anything while you're moving at a crawl.

    3) Add the "standard" untouchable period to Revive that all the other self-rez powers have.

    4) Sit back and bask in the glow of adoration of all of us /Regen scrappers.
That's all I was asking for really. I'd like a little more -regen resistance than that, but I'd be happy if we got those numbers. I was thinking 20% -regen resistance in Resilience as well for a total of 40%

A little bit of debuff resistance so the merest hint of a debuff isn't squashing a regen like a bug.

I can't even tell you how many times I faceplanted simply because my recharge and regen got debuffed at the same time. No regeneration meant I was not healing anything back passively, and my recharge being debuffed into the dirt meant that not only were my click heals not recharging, but my attacks weren't either, which left me unable to kill the thing debuffing me. If I had no inspirations left and MoG was not available, I was quite simply dead.

It's a situation that most other sets don't have to deal with.

Do I want a huge buff to Regen? No, just a small amount of debuff resistance.

Fiery Aura got slow resistance added to a passive power, and it is much less reliant on click powers for survival than Regen is. Willpower got -regen resistance, and it has more layers of mitigation than Regen to get through before the healing is necessary. Willpower's -regen resistance even comes in one of 2 powers in the set that is otherwise an exact copy of the power in regen.

    Yeah, they do.

That's why Lightning Rod and Shield Charge are better for scrappers than for brutes. They have a 400% cap on their damage, and it is based off the AT's damage modifier. Even if you're at 650% damage boost on a brute, Lightning Rod and Shield Charge will still only have a 400% boost. Since scrappers have a higher damage modifier, that translates to more damage out of those two powers for them.

I don't know of any location based AoE that is not a pseudo pet.

Aim and Build Up will boost them. As will popping inspirations before you use them.

Simple answer: They are force multipliers, and running on teams is when they are supposed to do well.

And with some combos it IS overpowered. A pair of Empathy/Sonics duoing is one of the most broken combos in the game, quite easily capable of duoing pretty much any TF they choose to, from about level 20 on.

The only way to prevent some of them from being overpowered is to forbid them from teaming with other force multipliers, and that's not going to happen.

Some people do dual box those characters, but for the most part, if you want to be overpowered, you require at least one other player to do it. They aren't going to allow a single Empathy/Sonic to be just as powerful as two of them are while teamed.

I'm not asking for a change to the power, buff or otherwise, I'm talking about fixing what seems to be a simple oversight/discrepancy/bug.
That's because both Blizzard and Rain of Arrows summon pseudo-pets that deal the damage. It's working as intended.

If you look at it, ALL psuedo-pet summoning powers have the same accuracy. Sleet, Freezing Rain, Rain of Fire, Ice Storm, Lightning Rod, Shield Charge, etc. Basically any location based AoE that gives you a targeting circle summons a pseudo pet at that location to deal the damage.

Highly doubt it will be changed, because it is exactly where it is supposed to be based on the nature of the powers.

    Redraw?

Yes. Anything that is not part of the Claws power set will cause redraw.

Works the same with every drawn weapon set. If you use a power that is not one of the 9 powers in that set it will cause you to put your weapon away and redraw it.

Apparently, before he left, Back Alley Brawler figured out a way to get rid of redraw, but it broke Shield Defense in bad ways when he did it, so they couldn't use it. Maybe someone else will figure it out someday.
