    Level 50 Snobs

See, I dislike exemping with my 50's too...for that exact reason, I don't like losing powers I'm accustomed to having and using (unless it's a TF, that's different)

However, if I am not doing anything important with the 50 I'm on, I will gladly hop to a character within level range of the person asking. My 50's generally are built AT level 50, and do not exemp well at all. Having a 50 of mine exemped on your team is often worse than the same AT/powerset combo that is really at that level. For example, I have a blaster that loses Stamina below level 30, and cannot function very well without it. As a result, I do not exemp him below 30. I have numerous characters that didn't take a travel power until the 30's.

I would much rather log on with a character that is at your level than run one of my 50's that aren't built for exemping. At least if I am the same level as you I can pull my weight, that often isn't the case with one of my 50s that is exemped.

It's not snobbery in my case, just practicality, I don't want to exemp a character and be dead weight because I'm missing something important at that level.

am sick of this, i play to blow stuff up, with others, Not sit their for hours looking for more, doing solo content

if i wanted to do solo content i would of Freaking buyed a RPG

its time, to Merge these servers, for the sake of making life easyer for us Pug people

i won't be staying here long as a new player, the servers are all ghost towns, and anyone staying up late, would know the Pop is dead, and Pug grouping is a shell of former self

AE has been murdered, and i can't find any leveling groups for the life of me

fix this devs, fix it now
It's pretty clear why you can't find a team....people don't like to team with people who have your kind of attitude.

I happen to enjoy soloing, but when I feel like teaming I have ZERO problem finding one, on Pinnacle no less, one of the emptiest servers in the game. Usually within 5 minutes or so of looking.

Why is that? Because people have found me to be enjoyable to have on teams, and are willing to team with me again. Whereas in your case, if you approach teaming the same way you approach forum posting, I suspect you have found your way to a lot of people's one-starred rating or /gignore lists.

If you are a jerk on teams, people remember it. They'll obtain your global name, and then avoid you in the future.

There are a number of testimonials from people here who have also told you they have no problem finding teams. I really do think your problem finding teams is of your own making.

Oh and by the way, HELL FRIGGING NO on a server merge. I LIKE playing on my low population server. The people like you tend to stay away from it, which makes my play experience that much better.

Add to that the fact that I play on a laptop and my system can't handle the activity on Freedom or Virtue without lagging me into oblivion. I'm sure you've seen how unpopular an idea this is just from the responses in this thread.

Your demand of "fix it devs, fix it now" is just selfish, plain and simple. Screw the people that a server merge would cause problems for, YOU want it, and you are so much more important than anyone else they HAVE to bend to your wishes.

Please, take your self-entitled ego trip somewhere else, where it might actually impress someone. It is not doing so here, in fact it's downright childish.

The community for the most part is friendly and welcoming of new players, very much less so of players who come in like you have and tell us we're all wrong, just because YOU don't agree. I know...it's shocking to discover that your posturing and ranting doesn't make you look cool...isn't it?

If you choose to leave, remember one thing please...the fewer players like YOU this game has, the better off it will be. We will not miss you, that I can promise.

Edit: Actually, I don't think this is City_Life. My reason for asserting this? I understood it the first time I read it. Also, ironically enough, in only 6 posts he has become the first person I have seen yet with TWO red dots.

    Pinnacle?

Sweet! Pinnacle has been my home for almost 4 years now, I have tried other servers, but I just love the community there.

Look me up sometime, my global is @Claws and Effect. (You can contact me by typing /t @Claws and Effect, <whatever you wanted to say>) (The comma is important)

I have a couple very casual player friendly SGs you can join (one on each side), we don't really have any rules about your playstyle to be a member, just have fun. Benefits of an SG include: base teleporters for ease of cross-zone travel, storage for your crap, and ease of finding a team when you are so inclined.

I also recommend PinnBadges as your global channel of choice, you can find any kind of team on there, and it will help explain why Pinnacle is known as the Drunk Server.

Welcom to the game, hope to see you around!

Yup, juggling. I also send welcome messages to players without vet badges. More often than not, this results in nothing but, about 1 in 10 actually start talking back and start asking basic game questions. You know, "How do I get more missions, Where do I level up, Where's the train?" Those kind of things

    A newbie asking questions? Brilliant!

I remember when I first got started. City was my first MMO and it was a bit intimidating. I blundered around for a bit until a few veteran players took pity on me and helped me iron out the wrinkles.

I figure it's my turn to return the favor.
I do the same thing on occasion.

Just before I16 went live I was going to delete a character and happened to be in Atlas (I think he was there to pick up the cape mission, not sure)

I noticed I was sitting on a few million influence and decided to hop around looking for people with no vet badges. So I sent out a bunch of trade invites to new players and dropped maybe 5 mil in the course of 20 minutes or so.

Answered a few questions and all was well.

I still see a LOT of broadcasts for AE teams though, I was hoping it would die out a little with I16. It was amusing seeing the level 2 scrapper broadcasting for an AE team for the better part of an hour, he just stood next to Ms. Liberty broadcasting every 15 seconds or so. Several people told him he'd level faster just running missions or street hunting than standing there. He apparently ignored them all, when I logged out an hour later, he was still there.
  6. Do your own legwork dude.

We can tell you what the FOTM combos are all day, but if none of them mesh with your playstyle you're going to suck.

I play scrappers, I have a Spines/Fire, supposedly one of the best farming builds in the game. If that's true, why is my Broadsword/Dark Armor better at it?

My Fire/Fire blaster should be my best blaster by normal convention....but my Sonic/Devices blows it away.

Nothing in the game will kill everything with ease, some ATs do very well in some situations and horrible in others. My aforementioned scrapper can do the RWZ Challenge with no worries, but he has trouble on Invincible ITFs (which technically no longer exist).

My Sonic/Devices blaster can solo an AV, but large groups area headache for him (he's not in any more danger, it just takes longer to kill them with all ST attacks)

In short, play what sounds like fun and make your OWN OP character.

My most overpowered are my BS/DA scrapper and Sonic/Devices blaster. If you were to ask, no one will tell you they are overpowered, or FOTMs. But MY BS/DA and Sonic/Devices are that good.

I just took what I had and MADE it good.
  7. You're absolutely right!

Not being able to waltz through the game solo on a Defender, clearing maps without even thinking about it, is obviously hurting the game!!

Stop complaining about ATs being vulnerable to things they were designed to be vulnerable to.

If a Fire/Kin controller had reliable mez protection available all the time, they would be nearly unstoppable. Great for people to mash buttons and get the phat lewt ASAP.

Not so great for game balance.

Why are Fire/Kins popular for farming? Because they kill large groups faster than anything else. The only thing that even slows them down is the occasional mez that sneaks through. If they could ignore mezzes, they would be stupidly overpowered, and no one will admit it for fear of one set or the other getting nerfed.

Yes, your solo Empathy defender will suffer for that. But, if you're soloing, why are you playing an Empathy defender?

The new difficulty settings are producing more mezzing opponents, that makes it harder.

Who's idea was it to have a feature designed to make things harder....actually make things harder?!? That's not fair! I want more mobs that I can mow through for drops and money, not mobs that might actually be a threat to me!!

Okay, I'm going to bed now, I just re-read this and my frustration with people is making me irritable.

Now this may be a tad too advanced right now (we have selectable animations for various powers so I'm unsure exactly how feasible this is or not).

I'd love to do the whole 'FPS weapon range' thing, it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense for one rifle to do everything from a single shot to firing a rocket (if you have Munitions).

So the options for the various powers becomes keeping the original in (for those that hate the redraw this would lead to...) and with a different option, each option would also allow for weapon customisation within that pool.

    Burst:
Dual pistols (same animation as the cone attack from the MM thugs pistol set but single target).

    Slug:
    Carbine (Musket, Western, Modern).

    Buckshot:
Shotgun (pump, Jackhammer auto-shotgun, double barrelled, sawn off).

    M30 Grenade:
Grenade launcher (one shot single tube, rotating cartridge version ala TF2 Demo man).

    Beanbag:
    Shotgun (same models).

    Sniper Rifle:
name says it all (Musket, Dragunov lookalike, Barrett M107 lookalike, current sniper rifle option).

    Flamethrower and Ignite:
Flamethrower (one we have ingame now as a temp weapon/used by Longbow Flamethrowers, oldschool WW2 style flamethrower).

    Full Auto:
Minigun (Longbow/council/5th column minigun, Nemesis smaller minigun).

    Muntions mastery:

    Cryo-Freeze ray:
    Mastermind pulse rifle options.

    LRM:
Missile launcher (used by the Council/5th Column).

That I would really love because it gives a proper kind of 'tooled up' style of weapon user (along with the standard question of 'where do you store all this' which has haunted FPS since Wolfenstien 3D but it's a comic book game...who cares...)
if I recall correctly it WAS like that originally. It was changed because the redraw drove everyone nuts, and no one played the set because of it. And I mean NO ONE. It made the set nearly unplayable.
  11. Also fact that all the Flashes, all the GLs but one, both Wildcats etc. are related within the storyline.

They all have conections to one another. How many of the Flashes have any powers aside from super-speed? Except for Jay Garrick they are all even in the same family

Name a GL who's powers didn't involve the creation of objects with hard light. Most commonly green light, but Guy Gardner had a yellow ring for a while (which was identical in function, just yellow instead of green) Even Alan Scott, who's ring was magic based, had powers that functioned very similarly, forming a (loose) connection with the others.

Not as familiar with the Wildcats, but I'd be willing to bet their powers (if they have any) and abilities are very similar, because (as Justice Blues pointed out) the two current ones are father and son.

Long history of characters with the same name that are very closely intertwined in the lore of the universe they reside in.

They are not random people who just happened to pick the same name. THAT is the point I was making.

Also, why do Batman and Iron Man have such impact? Because there is no one else with that name

Thugs fear Batman, I imagine their fear would be less if he was "A" Batman instead of "THE" Batman.

One other person has been known as Iron Man in the history of the character, James Rhodes, and that was because Tony Stark was trying to act like Iron Man was his bodyguard and not him personally.

In allowing unlimited characters to have the same name it kills the impact of that name.

"Hooray, it's Superman!" becomes "Oh, look, another Superman"

The Silver Age Wildcat would be better named the Earth-1 Wildcat, he was not a protege of the original, he was the Earth-1 version of the original, who was from Earth-2. Since Crisis on Infinite Earths in 1986, there has only been the original Wildcat, his goddaughter Yolanda (killed by Eclipso) and his son Tom Bronson. The original and his son are both members of the JSA.
I won't lie, this one I looked up. I wasn't familiar with the character, so I had no knowledge of my own. The point I was making stands though. All the Wildcats have the name because they are all connected.

    Quote:
You have John Henry Irons correct. Superboy did in fact claim to be the original Superman, he didn't know he was a clone and neither did anyone else at first. Cyborg Superman was obviously not the real one, and was of course engaging in subterfuge. The other Superman at the time was not inhabiting the body of the real one, it was the Eradicator who had created his own body using Superman's as a template.
I apparently missed some issues there. Namely the ones where they explained some of that. I remember the Superboy series from after he knew he was a clone, and just plain forgot that he was claiming to be the original. Cyborg Superman WAS claiming to be the real one (no one bought it, but he claimed it all the same) And I apparently missed the part where the Eradicator revealed who he really was. Last I was aware he was still claiming to be inhabiting the original body. I lost interest in it after a while, so there are holes in my knowledge.

But, all of these characters that had a claim to the name of Superman were connected by the same storyline, and their stories were told in the 4 Superman titles that already existed at the time.

    Quote:
Jay Garrick was in fact active at the same time as Barry Allen, the same way there were 2 Supermen, 2 Batmen, 2 Robins, etc. active at once. It was during the Silver Age, with Earth-1, Earth-2, Earth-3, etc. all being extant, resulting in multiples of each character. (I use the same conceit to explain my multiple versions of Justice Blues.) After COIE, Jay was semi-retired and Barry was dead, so there was just Wally West. But Jay has been out of retirement for many years now, co-existing as Flash with both Wally and Bart at different points, and at this point in time, there are 3 Flashes all on active duty at once, Jay, Barry, and Wally. Bart having reverted to Kid Flash again.
Yeah, I dug a little deeper and discovered that all 3 Flashes asked Jay's permission to use the name. I was unaware that they were active concurrently until then. I knew Wally was Kid Flash while Barry was active though, only because I have about a 35 issue run of the Teen Titans from the early 80's (my collection ends just before Crisis, in mid '85)

Again though, the point I was making stands, all the Flashes that have or had the name are connected in some way. And with the exception of Jay Garrick they are all related (Barry is Wally's uncle, Bart is Barry's grandson) The original Jay connection is, when Barry gained super speed he named himself after his childhood hero...Jay Garrick. That was before Jay reappeared I believe.

I had to look a lot of that up, I was going by memory on the parts that were incorrect, and my DC lore is weak. I am MUCH better at Marvel lore, because I always preferred the characters they had.

Incorrect information aside, the point I was making is that in every case here, there is a reason for these characters to have the same name, they aren't just random guys with the same name that have nothing to do with each other.

Eh, I think it's just more that you've been playing PnP RPGs so long that you can think back to something a new game reminds you of.

Wasn't like that in the late 70's and early 80's because there WAS nothing to BE reminded of, it didn't exist before that.

I've seen some very imaginative stuff come out in the last decade or so.

Except in the case of Wizards of the Coast. I'll never give them another dime if I can help it. Used to be an avid Magic player, until they started making up new rules with every release and making the old cards obsolete and illegal for tournament play. The way they have it set up you have to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars a year to keep up with the hobby, or you can't play in tournaments. No thanks, I'll just keep my cards and play casually with friends.

And now they're doing the same thing with D&D. Coming up with new rulebooks that you HAVE to buy to keep up with stuff.

When they stopped caring about the games being fun and more about how much money they can bleed from their customers, they lost me as one.

Sorry 'bout the tangent there. I guess we all know how I feel about WotC now, don't we?

I made an Elec/SE scrapper, and after softcapping I was going to slot 1 Acc, 1 Rech, and 4 damage procs in it.....and see how long it took me to solo an AV or a pylon. With enough global recharge on top of that, it should recharge just about as fast as it animates, resulting in a non-stop barrage of Brawl.

Yes, I'm trying to one-up Iggy_Kamikaze, who did the RWZ Challenge with nothing but Swipe, on a Regen.

Now that I've explained that to you, can someone answer my question - why the hate against the idea? Is it just aesthetics, or is something else in play?
First, how does the amount of time one has to play in have ANYTHING to do with their ability to name their character?

That's just a silly argument there. Whether someone plays for an hour or for 12 hours has NOTHING to do with whether or not a name is taken when they try it. Spending more time in the game doesn't mean you get preferential treatment on names.

My hate for the idea is partially aesthetics. I don't want to see a thousand Pyroguys running around.

The second reason is it would be easy to grief someone by creating a character that looks exactly like their main, with the same name, and spouting all kinds of vitriol in broadcast.

My main's name is Claws and Effect. Everyone on Pinnacle knows that is ME. If someone I pissed off decides to grief me by sending tells and spouting off in broadcast it damages how people will react to me, because I can't prove it WASN'T me.

Yes, I know the global name won't match. But what's to stop me from opening a second account and being a jerk on it, hoping no one catches me? Nothing. I can say I'm innocent until I'm blue in the face, but I'll NEVER be able to prove it.

I don't mind being disliked for something I'm guilty of, you can't please everyone, and not everyone is going to like you. But I really don't want the potential for something where someone could pretend to be me and have people hating me for something I didn't do.

As it is now, if someone dislikes me because of something I said, at least it was actually me saying it.

This sums up my thoughts on it quite nicely actually.

You're basically asking for mezzes to be removed from the game.

No, really, you are. If everyone is protected from them at all times, what is the point of them even existing? It's called challenge, you should try it some time, much more satisfying than mashing buttons until everything is dead.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

Every AT that is vulnerable to mez has some way of preventing the enemy from ever USING the mez.

ATs that do not have the ability to prevent their use, get protection from them.

Blasters have limited ability to prevent mez, so they have limited immunity to it.

Scrappers get very few options for mezzing opponents, and the most reliable methods are usually found in powers no one wants to take, so they get mez protection to make them playable at all. And with one exception (Petrifying Gaze) all scrapper mezzes are melee range. If you agro a spawn, you will be held/slept/stunned before you even get close enough to use that power. They are also ALL single target powers, meaning you can't do anything about multiple mezzers at once. Therefore, since scrappers have such limited ability to prevent mez, they are protected from it.

You can't really argue that scrappers, tanks, and brutes would be playable without mez protection. Try it sometime, jump into a spawn of Malta with your anti-mez toggle (or click) turned off, and see how long you live.

Controllers can lock down a mezzing foe before they are even targeted by them. Defenders, in almost every case, can do SOMETHING to make that mez less likely to hit.
    Corruptors, same as defenders.
Masterminds can go entire missions without ever being targeted by an enemy if they know what they're doing at all.
Dominators can pre-emptively lock down too, AND they can kill it to boot.

The only set combination I can think of that can't do anything about a mez is Empathy/Energy, and you'd have to be insane to try and solo that anyway.
  21. I had a level 50 fire blaster following me around for a haf hour a while back.

Every time I started to head toward a mob he'd launch a Fireball into it, oneshotting the whole spawn.

I asked him politely to stop doing that. His response was: lulz nub

My next tell was telling him to remember this when he gets the email from Support.
    He said: lulz wut?
I say: That means I just reported you for harrassment. Have fun now!

I actually have to agree with that. Blasters have gotten ONE new secondary set since launch.

But the problem with Sonic and Rad is that it would be hard to come up with enough powers for an entire secondary that wouldn't be overpowered.

Rad would be easier to do than Sonic. The Peacebringer melee attacks actually function a LOT like Rad Melee would. (energy/smashing damage, -def secondary effect)

Maybe Choking Cloud later in the set.

I can guarantee blasters will never get access to the toggle debuffs. MAYBE Lingering Radiation would be a possibility, but I wouldn't count on it.

So, 3 melee attacks, Build Up, Choking Cloud, MAYBE Lingering Rad. That's only 6 powers, meaning 3 would have to be wholly original (and I don't want them to cop out and port Boost Range or something)

Sonic's secondary effect of -res would be insanely powerful if they overloaded a secondary with it. Fire/Sonic Blaster anyone?

I really can't think of ANYTHING that would be appropriate to put in a Sonic secondary.

Okay, that's actually another good point.

How many classic, one word superhero names are unavailable because of copyrights or trademarks from one of the many comic book publishers out there?

I can't be "Chamber" because it is a Marvel character, even though I can think of literally dozens of possibilities for that name that have nothing to do with Marvel's Chamber.

I look at names in-game the same way. Someone else has the name, whether or not they can sue me for using it is completely irrelevant. It doesn't matter if the name is unavailable because it is trademarked, or because another player already has it. The result is the same.

I actually should have known Meltdown was blocked, I tried it myself a couple years ago and it came up "unavailable" rather than "already in use". Which means the name is blocked from ANYONE using it.
  24. All I was saying is, in the VAST majority of situations where more than one person has a name in comic book lore, there is a reason for it.

To use your Wildcat example: There have been at least 4 Wildcats in the DC universe. The original Golden Age one. Then there was the Silver Age Wildcat, who happened to be the original's protege. Then you get down to the current Wildcats (of which there are 2). The part you glossed over is that BOTH of the current Wildcats have a connection to the original Golden Age Wildcat.

John Henry Irons was the Man of Steel, he never claimed to BE Superman, just that he felt it was his mission in life to continue his work. Superboy was a clone of Superman, he knew he wasn't the original, though he had similar traits. The 2 that were claiming to be the original were the one that actually WAS inhabiting his body, and the Cyborg Superman.

There were 2 people claiming to be Spider-Man at one point. One was a clone of Peter Parker who had the exact same abilities and they were impossible to conclusively tell apart.

Yes, there ARE cases of characters that had the same name as another, without having a connection. In almost every single case, they were villains who were in a major character's series for 2 or 3 issues and were never seen again. And they were never seen at the same time (that I'm aware of)

I understand perfectly that some folks just want common names that say "superhero".

What I don't understand is people's refusal to accept "first come, first served". Yes, you wanted that name, but someone else beat you to it. Think of something else.

And your repeated use of the name in this thread makes me think you are just pissed off because you can't name your new Rad/Fire blaster "Meltdown".

And, you've been around long enough, why didn't you snag it then when it was still available?

Edit: My point above was pointing out that you were using a bad example as far as naming conventions are concerned. You mentioned a bunch of characters with the same name and completely glossed over the fact that in every single case you mentioned there is a significant amount of story supporting why they have the same name.

    A) They are related. The son takes the name of his father (in CoH lore, Manticore)
    B) The new one was trained by or is the protege of the old one, and they take over when the old one is no longer active. (Bucky taking over for Captain America, Silver Age Wildcat)
    C) Both characters are claiming to be the "real" one. (Spider-Man clone, Reign of the Supermen)

Jay Garrick was not active at the same time as Barry Allen (barring time travel), Barry Allen picked up the mantle and became The Flash when he gained super speed, apparently LONG after Jay Garrick was no longer active. I also just searched and found out something I didn't know, Barry Allen named himself after the Jay Garrick Flash from a comic book.

Same with the Flashes, the Green Lanterns (even restricting things to Earth and not the Corps). There are two Wildcats as well.

    In. The. Current. DC. Universe.

*scoffs and rolls eyes Comic Book Guy style because you can't discuss comics without emoting Comic Book Guy*
Green Lantern is a TITLE you are given when you receive a ring. Not an individual name. There are many Green Lanterns, and it is accepted because it is KNOWN that it is a title and not a name.

I believe most of the Flashes are related to each other somehow. If my lore is correct Barry Allen is Wally West's uncle and Wally got his powers in the very same lab his uncle did. While Barry was active Wally was known as Kid Flash and had a yellow and red costume, he was active with the Teen Titans in the early 80's. he didn't become The Flash until Barry retired.

The Wildcats are both connected to the original Golden Age Wildcat. One is his god-daughter, the other is his prodigal son.

All of these examples are connected by story. Not a single one of them has the same name as any other while having no relation to them.

    Another example: Ghost Rider.

When Danny Ketch became Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze was just Johnny Blaze. Johnny Blaze became Ghost Rider again after Danny Ketch disappeared.

They were not known as Ghost Rider simultaneously until recently, when it was revealed that there are multiple Ghost Riders, all assigned to a different part of the world. Johnny Blaze is still THE Ghost Rider, while Danny Ketch is just A Ghost Rider.

Also...they're brothers, so the family connection is there too.
