Quote:But who can resist Hostess Cupcakes' deep, dark chocolaty icing and cream filling or the real fruit filling of Hostess Fruit pies? That guy was caught stealing snacks out of people's desks and promptly given his walking papers.
Snack time is serious business!

I found Teleport to be a pain overall. It works best when you take Hover with it to avoid the "OMG lag is making me fall from the sky before I can reTP" effect, and to get from one side of the map to another by having to click the spot to TP to got pretty old. That said, the lower TP powers like Recall Friend and TP Foe have their uses, on occasion.
Just my two inf on one of them for ya. -
Welcome Doc!
Fans of the AE system - not the farmers or exploiters, but fans - are going to enjoy having you here I think. We'll be happy to thank you for your good work, or to kick you around for making us all cry DOOOOM when you change something in a way we don't like.
Either way we win!
So, welcome again! -
Quote:I think this is one reason why people feel they can say "that game needs a revamp", they're not here to see the smallish incremental changes that are made issue to issue rather than in, say, a new box upgrade on the shelf every other year or so like WoW (which probably biases them to think that each of those upgrades were 100% awesome and 'big'). This game is miles from where it used to be.My problem with the "game is old and needs a revamp" argument is simple.
How similar is City of Heroes as it is now to as it was at its outset? Way I see it, the game revamps itself a little each issue - usually for the better, too.
That said, no game is perfect and you can always find something to point to that's "needs work." -
Thanks for the great review, I'm really glad you enjoyed playing through it! And providing, as always, a thoughtful discussion of what you saw and a fun-to-read write up; I bet you're an RP beast.
To address a few things you mentioned:
You mentioned leaving the allies behind in the last mission because they were too helpful. I put them in there because, as a villain, it's always fun to betray people, but mainly to help ultra-squishies players. The issue of lost XP was a concern though and something I could adjust: both Jim and The Ron-ster are set at lieutenant level and could be dropped to minion. From what I can see, Jim doesn't do all that much half the time anyways, other than web grenade foes, which kind of fits his slacker character anyways, heh. Anyways, it's an issue I'm still considering.
You mentioned Rabbitual Criminal and having seen him again. He appears in all three arcs I've made to magnify the pun in his name on the phrase "habitual criminal" and the line in his bio "Oh yeah, I've fought this guy before..." My little joke to myself.I decided to just give him a walk-on part in this arc as I didn't want any low level toons to feel burdened by two boss fights.
Making it more clear to run back to the pitcher isn't a bad idea, I'll see if I can't get that in there. As for making it a destructible object to help with the badges, that's something else that I thought about as well later. Consider it on the list!
Staying and fighting the LongBow after you click it and the mission "ends" is something I do when I play through it, just because of sheer XP greed on my part. But it's a tough ambush - at least for squishies I've run through this - so at least anyone facing has an insta-escape option in clicking the exit button. I've thought about putting something in there about "time to run!" but I was thinking if I put it in as a clue, the hapless player might get whacked while clicking up their clue window and sifting through to find it and then reading it. Maybe I can mention that in the "now go back to where you stashed your pitcher" bit.
As for the number of glowies in the first two arcs: I did that because I believe I've read that placing a bunch of them around helps cut down on the number of foes on a map (I might be wrong on that). I didn't want the first 2 missions to be endless non-stamina+resting battles that slow-playing low level toons often face; that always drives me nuts. On the other hand, after running a handful of lowbies through this arc, I found I didn't gain as many levels as I would have liked. Think maybe I should cut the number of glowies to let more foes spawn and risk the downtime factor?
I did make a point (unless it done got et by the MA editing bug that sometimes doesn't save changes) to drop a "[not needed for mission complete]" on both of those glowies' clues to make it clear that the rest of them can be skipped. Maybe I should add some color to that text (does that window allow for color text?) or all-caps it or something. Another item to be put on the list.
And by the way, that's a great screencap of Fats getting whammied!
Thanks again for you help! People who provide feedback like this are the lifeblood of the MA.
By the way, I love you toon's bio! But are we allowed to put something in there like "bat#@&*" and not face dev's wrath? O_O -
The author does have the option to delete comments, but I haven't used it. Probably a good idea to save it for real comments though.

Quote:This sounds a lot like my experiences. I have been in a good SG like last year at this time but it ended up dying; it was even in the server's top ten when I joined it.I've joined a lot of start-up SGs/VGs. (Because I have a lot of alts, and I don't have a regular SG/VG.) I generally encounter things like:
- The supergroup leader being a new player simply disappears after a few months (or even a few weeks), because they got bored with the game and went off to the next MMO.
- The supergroup's members, which were recruited through spamming broadcast, all go inactive. (I'm guilty of it too, sure.)
- The supergroup members are members in name, so they are on the roster, but none of them wants to team with you, and try to avoid teaming with you. Same with whoever is on the coalition.
- The small SG/VG keeps telling me to make prestige, put on SG/VG colours, whatever, so they can build up. I do play in SG mode but I don't like people getting anal about what I have to do.
- And I play at weird times so everyone in the SG/VG is offline when I play.
So at the end of the day, I see a start-up SG/VG become a dead SG/VG, and then I just quit and go back to my 2 person "SG", where at least I know is quite comfy and has lots of space to dump my stuff
I don't think I caused that... O_O;
Myself, if I found an SG that had members on at my hours and who'd team with me, I'd happily enlist every toon I have in it, or at least be more than happy to say something like "I have a Bots/Dark MM who could really help us here, want me to go get her?" or something. Here's why: one thing I've seen in a couple of the SGs I joined was that they tended to be "Here's me, all my alts and all the alts of two or three of my friends, plus some lowbie nobodies we recruited via broadcast and rarely speak to," so I'm not sure about the "enlisting all my alts" thing there. I wouldn't want to be part of that sort of set-up. -
I'm not really sure what I'm going to do.
I might take my latest toon, a Fire/Emp troller, up high enough to get her the fire imps I've had my eye on.
Past that, I have a handful of toons sitting in the late 30s/early 40s that is might be nice to finish off (I rarely play toons once they hit 50 it seems). Then again, since they've been claimed by altitis in the past, they can be easily ignored in favor of starting yet another toon as well. And I've got that Mind/Mind Dom at like 7th that's been cool so far, maybe I should level her up...
Here's hoping I don't just deer-in-the-headlights like so o_o at the 'choose server page'. -
You know, I hear this thing about "Storm powers looking like sandstorms" a lot. I have a Bots/Storm MM I'm dying to try this on with a twist - she's from Mars (green skin and everything, yup) and I'm going to try making the Storm powers look like a Martian sandstorm, meaning reds.

Quote:The matter of player-chosen background ("my villain is a crash-landed alien robot that was dredged up from the ocean near Fort Darwin after laying under the muck for a thousand years...") was one I considered, sure, but I couldn't see any way around it that would work with the story I wanted to tell.Of all your arcs, I liked A.E.'s Premium Quality Mission: "guaranteed qualityyyyLOADING ERROR 0.000459" ID#148476 best. Especially the way it reminded me of a certain game and how support works there.
The other two were nice as well. I had to try out the bunnygirls of course as I don't want to have more competition (there can be only one real Gunbunny out there). The villains first day job was interesting if you look for a reason why you became a villain. Problem is that when you got a background this will clash with it. So for me that one was not right.
Keep up the good work.
The story I told would probably clash with a lot of my own toons; I don't RP much but I do understand it's important to a lot of other players. I've even played through some hero content with my villains (GR here we come!), and played through this with a 'troller I recently started! Anyways, I was thinking that players who're less stringent about this issue (and are REALLY tired of snakes) will be flexible enough will just play and read the story. I'm sorry to hear it didn't work for you because of that.
Thanks for replying; your little heads-up there may help players who wish to stick to their character's "canon" give this a miss. I'd hate to have someone play through my stuff and dislike for any reason.
As for bunny competition, would it upset you to hear that I took one of the bosses (Watership Doom) from that arc and used her as the template for an MM I have? -
Quote:I was going to not name names, to let you preserve your dignity...I'm the player who didn't realise there was an interior section to that map-i'm assuming that the glowies DID spawn the first three times, but as they spawn inside, i just didnt see them.
EcoI was just a little worried someone might go to play that arc and see the comments you left about things not working, then not read too far or closely and bail without trying.
-
I find my Bots/Dark MM is be a fairly hands-on toon as well, I'm rarely just standing around watching my bots decimate a group of foes - but I do make time for it, it's a glorious sight.
If nothing else, spamming the Dark's heal is always a good move because it debuffs foes.
-
Just a quick note on DayJob Hell:
A recent player said he/she was having trouble with some of the objectives spawning in the last mission. They are all in there and he/she got it to work (after playing it three times!). If this happens to you, bug it (and try it again). It shouldn't happen again though; I just ran it and all is fine with it.
He/she also told me that in the third mission, they didn't know there was an inside portion of the map and suggested I drop a hint about that in the text. While I haven't gotten to that yet (and I may; still pondering it and how to do it) - be warned!
Also, the first player to leave a comment said something about "all the glowies". I dropped in a LOT of glowies that are NOT needed to complete the missions to keep down the number of foes. Every time I'm starting a new toon I get annoyed at all the downtime resting and I figured that larger numbers of foes, meaning more battles, would lead to having to "take a knee" enough times that the play-time of the arc might get too long. Also, once you've clicked one for the flavor text you can happily breeze right past the rest.
If anyone has any comment on that or maybe a suggestion about how to rejigger the arc, I'm all ears. -
That's what I was thinking - the devs have found an easy way to have us sort through all the junk for them! I'm really hoping some new Dev's Choices come from this as well.
-
I've only taken Aid Other on one MM, a Mercs/Traps, which obviously doesn't have a good heal in the primaries (Beacon is... well, slow and sessile). I took it for him at something like 36th and OMG did it make a huge diff for him!
My other two MMs are /Storm and /Dark. Each has a heal and didn't really need any other. I did take Repair on the /Storm (she's a Bots/Storm, yes) and it does see some use here and there but if I was min/maxing a build and needed a power pick I probably wouldn't miss it much.
I sometimes take the Leaderships and sometimes don't, although I'm thinking I probably should. I'm not much of a min/maxer though and sometimes I made contrarian picks just because I want to play differently; don't tell me to stop that until I roll a petless MM. -
I was just reworking some costumes in one of may arcs yesterday and then started in on sending the email to enter it into the Architect Awards. To do so, you have to attach the files for the arc to an email, so I opened up my COH in program files and started looking for the mission files and... I had nothing because I didn't have a current copy of the arc, even after tinkering with it and republishing.
Very easy to solve: open it up, hit the "save locally" button (or whatever it's labeled), and there you go. -
I set the Energy Melee powers on one of my stalker's costume slots to be a pleasant lime green/aqua sort of combo. I didn't mind the pink pompoms as much as some, but I really like the way it came out.

Day Job Hell has had a few more plays and now averages 4 stars like the other arcs. One player who left a comment (of two) said they felt the maps were too big - seeing as how this was my first arc for lowbies, I can see that might be a concern. If anyone else feels the same, please let me know and I'll take a look at changing them.
Also, BUNNYGIRLS has had some costume updates! A recent player noted that when teaming, being attacked by a mass of such similar-looking foes struck him/her as a bit dull, so I've changed the colors and a few other details on a number of them. Looking back on it, I should have done this awhile ago - player feedback delivers again! Now it looks like an angry rabbity-rainbow of buxom bunnies trying to take over the world!
Not to sound too bloggy here but I'm going to enter BUNNYGIRLS into the Architect Awards as it seems to be the most popular, not even just based on just number of plays. So wish me luck! I'm sure I'm going to need it as there's a lot of great arcs out there.
As always, thanks for playing plus leaving feedback and I hope you enjoy these little stories I've spun. -
Quote:NOOO! Don't skip those sections!! Now that time has passed, such sections of books are great historical documents about aspects of life in the times they were written! For instance, when Melville wrote Moby Dick, the number of books that documented the whaling trade could be counted on one hand. I really liked the whaling stuff in Moby Dick and even the sections about Parisian architecture in The Hunchback of Notre Dame.Several fine novelists wrote their greatest works serially & on deadline- Hugo, Dumas & Dickens come to mind.
This led to some unavoidable filler in even their finest novels, pages or even chapters you could safely skip without harming your enjoyment of the work as a whole. Dickens seemed especially prone to this, devoting dozens of pages to detailed descriptions of arcane Victorian processes with tangential relevance to the main story.
Even great works can include boring, irrelevant sections.
Skipping over the crummy bits is greatly preferable to ignoring the whole book.
But that's just me. Awaiting my negative rep (you know someone will). -
I just recolored my Bots/Dark Miasma's dark powers to show more obviously too. I haven't had a chance to team with her yet, but I'm sure it'll make a difference. Heck, half the time I play her I can't really "see" it all that much myself; I'm too busy fighting and so on to sit and decode what I'm seeing in this dark cave or where ever to grasp what each little dark wisp here and there is.
I may get bold and try to go with a bright red for her next costume slot; I'd consider pink but right now I'm leveling up a troller with pink heals. -
My completely anecdotal evidence shows that finding a team is easier. Just the other day on Virtue my 23rd troller ended up running with a team of 30-somethings in Brickstown for several missions. I hadn't even had the chance to go slot up my new slots or replace enhancers I had leveled past and I was still able to make valuable contributions to the team. I've also gone and PuGed with lowbies just to have something to do and things went fine (altho I did miss my Stamina).
I praise the SSK gods!
Once the back-to-school population slump cools off and the Halloween event and so on kick in, I think the new SSK is really going to start working even better. By then we'll all have more of an idea just how broadly we can form teams and we'll be seeing more of them more often. I think the new SSK is one of the best ideas in a long time the devs have come up with. -
If I'm playing a toon below say about 15, I don't bother even trying to go after a Rikti Bomb because my damage is so piddly and they regen too quickly. And I love invasion events. :P So I think this whole thing may have some merit.
Speaking of invasion events, the story above about the devs enjoying watching people freak over the first early zombie invasions is pretty cute. ^^ -
I'm a bit late to the party to say it but...
Oh look, this thread again. -
Quote:(bolded for emphasis)All I'm gonna say, having worked for a magazine in the past, is that money talks. If I'm not mistaken, Champions Online advertised in that magazine and had a 3 page story with a positive take, then COH got a small article in the back with a negative take.
Opinions are fine, but the opinions you find in magazines can sometimes be skewed by money and special interests.
Nice post about what was working and not, but I think this might be the real issue...
