    Or positron's blast, or Rag.

I like that it is a targeted aoe and am making good use of that.

I have the slots so Posi's doesn't bother me.
And I prefer Rag in a set that I get to use the nice damage when I exemp for TFs.

edit: and even at 50 I like the proc and higher numbers in a faster recharging power.

There was a thread around here somewhere that evaluated StJ as contending strongly with DM....

Fair enough, but the ability to do that now hasn't done much to lower prices. Not everyone grinds merits, so the market remains their avenue. It remains my only concern with adding more purples without adjusting drop rates.
  4. The problem with new purple sets is they would then water down the drops further and drive the rarity of what we have (and the prices) higher.

My understanding is teen girls have latched onto them because the main character is a teen girl. It is an interesting premise (Running Man-ish) that I plan to read sometime in the next couple of months - it had been on the back, back burner for 'some day' but my teen daughter got it for Christmas, so I'll borrow it from her.

I do not think that pointing that out is whining.

The whole story is sad, that guy never needs to be near any marketing again.

    Albert Maurer?

    When did she appear, tho?

Never seen her before, and stumbled across her today.

nvm: apparently I'm just never paying attention around there. She's been there close to/over a year, I was told in game.

Even now, the same melee attacks on a Dom hit harder even if you factor Bruising.
And they pay for that with reduced survivability.

    And.... *shrug*.

So let's let them revel in what they can do uniquely and better instead of making yet another punch monkey.

I suspect our love and history with the books comes from similar places. YMMV, and all that, but the trilogy surpassed my expectations, because I went into it believing they couldn't even get close to doing the books justice. They can't (and didn't) match the magic of the story's telling in prose, but they have reached far, far farther than I hoped. And, while the animated Hobbit was excellent the animated LotR was, IMO, dross at best.
  16. I am not aware of a provided lore explanation of the Echo. (It does appear to be just a way to cheaply provide access to the previous badges.)

However, maybe it is the Menders' way of trying to hold onto a reminder of how things were before the Coming Storm came, a way to prove to heroes why the Menders' fight is important. Or, perhaps it is a reminder to themselves that, so far, they have failed.

This is poignant, and powerful. And a nice twist on using the presence of the Echo.

    Nice bio.

Mender Raphael stood quietly, looking out at the vista surrounding Ouroboros. To his left, the portal to the Echo of Galaxy City sat, faint and subtle vibrations of power rippling away from it and tingling past his senses. It flared quickly, and he sighed. The young hero, Galaxy Kid, had activated it yet again.

There was strength born of the Fall of Galaxy City. Galaxy Kid and others had taken up the cause, perhaps more motivated than those that had come before. The Menders could use that.

But suffering and pain came with that new strength, as well. The Menders had to do better. Some questioned why they had created the Echo. Not Raphael. For each who said the Echo was "wallowing in failure" he knew that were those that it helped - to ease the pain of loss or as a rallying cry to strive harder. It was necessary, however painful its lessons.

But for Raphael, it inspired fear - fear that there would be many more echoes before the Storm had passed...
  17. I have a level of enthusiasm approaching that of when I first saw the LotR trailer. I plan to start reading "The Hobbit" to my youngest over the holiday to get the hype fully prepped in my house...

(As a related side note, go to Google maps. Ask for walking directions from "The Shire" to "Mordor".)

At least my own character concepts are predicated on my Tankers being tough and hardy, not on their ability to notice a flashing circle amid the dazzle of everyone's combat effects.

Simply exempting Tankers from all the "instant death" mechanics in the iTrials would be a start.

As an aside, I can say from experience from running multiple ATs and powersets through the various trials that it is on Electric Armor tanks where I have had the most survivability.

OK, I'll grant you he isn't a textbook definition, and concede the point.
But, he sure seems like basic "I want to be Superman" wish fulfillment if I ever saw it.
  20. I haven't seen any train of thought better than this one. (Though I admit skipping most of the details of this thread, and gave up on the "PM tanker changes" one too.)

I think you are discounting soft control and the prominent role of taunt in the secondary.

Well, the lore goes out of its way to say otherwise. It has for seven years, so maybe it's understandable where the idea comes from, especially when the game and developers work to cultivate it. But I digress. So do the most famous signature Tankers in the gamet fit with how Tankers are actually regarded? Again, I say they don't.
    1. Superman is a bad reference period as a genre/concept/balance breaker, so, right out.
    2. States is a Mary Sue-Superman (see #1), and pretty much well worth ignoring as a justification for AT behavior. Otherwise we could cite all the prominent CoH characters and argue how their ATs are clearly not meeting design.
    3. Also, States is an incarnate, and based on my tanks' advancement so far, they hit pretty hard as incarnates, too...

They do, and they are when they're played correctly.
*shrug* I have never thought of tankers representing heavy hitter. They do model a style of character in comics that draws attention and takes the hits that team mates cannot while they use their flashy powers. Comics being what they are, many of those same characters pack some oomf too, but the AT was not designed to be Mr. Durable and Mr. Heavy Punch. Game Balance requires it. No one would ever make anything else. (Admittedly, I something more like Brutes are what Tanks woulda/coulda at initial release.)

While tanker damage isn't "high" I've not been particularly disappointed with it either. And when I want to punch something and hear it break into a million pieces - scrapper or brute alt to the rescue. On the other hand, if I want to tank, I know what and why I'm getting it and any min/max 'woe is superman' logic need not apply...

Gather the pain and keep it from the squishies. Control the fight by holding the aggro. Taunt it, punch it, aura it, but keep those minions and others from wounding the defenders, blasters, corrs, etc.

On my favorite tanky tanks I slot unusually, trying to maximize taunt, and then back that with regen (in addition to the normal resist/def).

The later you get in levels, the more durable a team should get, so then the job is the same - just perhaps more time for general punchiness. But, also use that to set a fast pace - gather, once team has it on the way down, move on to prep the next spawn (steamroll)... So, pacesetter is another tank role.

Nice question... I'd say consider the BAF, it is often the tank that is expected to charge to get the AVs and bring them back (granted, sometimes a durable Brute, but the fact is that is a tank role). Or on the Keyes to drag Anti-Matter around. Lambda - tanks often collect the grenades and are expected to hold that aggro and time the debuff. UGT - keep the avatar facing a corner. You live where others should fall
    - which is just a different way of applying their unique ability to control the fight.
