Poor Zapp. I can't quite tell from the set bonuses if Absolute Amazement is in lightning clap, but given I see at least one ultimate fire/cold res, there's a decent chance it is, even if quite a few purples have that.

Well, that's it, the post is won. Devs hate snipes. There's nothing else to argue about.
  2. Interesting idea, but PVP is unpopular enough as it is. I don't know if this wold encourage people to PVP more, I think it might just result in most people not flagged for PVP and those who did go into other zones being unable to find anyone flagged for them to fight.

But, to specifically answer your question rather than just pontificate, to make a perfectly good and very effectively IO'd toon, it costs no more than 500-700 mil, provided one goes light on LotG globals, high-demand uniques and Numinas.

One can even purple out non-PVP-valuable powers on various AT's for relatively little, which indicates that the real crux of the problem is somehow centric to PVP-Valuable IO's.

Does this indicate that the 'hardcore PVPers' are the real mainstay of "The Problem"? Frankly, I dunno; too soon to tell.
    ...NO.

You just... you have no idea what's going on, do you?

The reason PVP IOs are so stupid expensive isn't because they're so good for PVP, it's because they're so good and /nobody PVPs./ The issue is that these recipes are as good as if not better than the readily available recipes for the same sets, but they never drop because there's not enough PVP happening for there to be a steady supply of them.

The recipes that are expensive aren't so because they're better for PVP, but because they're better for PVE. Melee damage, PBAOE, Targeted AOE... These are the best sets for killing foes through normal play. PBAOE isn't even viable in PVP! There's only one two ATs for whom multiple foes at once are really an issue, and controller pets aren't much of a threat at all. If AOE matters at all in PVP, it's only to fight Masterminds.

Uruare, at this point I am forced to assume that not only do you not know what you're talking about as far as economics go, but you don't actually know how the game works. Gladiator's Armor +3 Defense is stupid expensive because the only reason a character would possibly not want it is if they have no resistance powers in their build at all. It is at LEAST a 6% mitigation to all incoming damage, and as a PVP drop it is incredibly rare. This is why it's so expensive, not because the "hardcore PVPers" are driving up the prices.

You seem to be trying to tell us, though, that because inf sellers profit off certain aspects of the market, we should not use those aspects of the market. You're also telling us to purposely make stupid marketing decisions to not be evil. And you're suggesting that if we have all our purple drops and all the IOs we want, we'll have plenty of other rewards to get...

...Except we don't. There's currently really only 3 badges per side that are prestigious: Master of Whatever Task/Strike Force. As an MMO, the goal in this game for most of us is to make our characters as good as they possibly can be. Until GR's new endgame content comes out, the only way to improve my main is purple recipes (he's got all the accolades that have effects, save some day job ones) and PVP recipes. Yes, the bonus is relatively small, but it's still a bonus, a slow increase in power... And with my character slotted the way he is, if I were to shell out for the Gladiator +3 Defense, that would be something like 15% survivability increase for my character.

I've experienced most of the content redside has to offer. While I do have blue toons as well, I don't want to abandon my redsider just because I've done everything. Thus, I'm trying to improve him further and further.

If purples become more common, we'll need something else silly rare for people to strive for... That's what is FUN for a lot of us. And if working to improve your character isn't fun to you, well... Stop playing an MMO. Go try "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" that's a good game with no grind... Oh, I suppose collecting all 7 Emeralds might be a bit much, huh? What with it requiring you to spend time hunting and collecting rings and all that.

  6. Good call. Add in the extinguishers and it'd be solid.
  7. Team leaders already get merits that nobody else does. That's encouragement enough to drive. Adding additional bonuses will only make people fight over who the leader is.
  8. The issue is that you've no way to ensure that the players have ice powers of an extinguisher, and this could easily make many arcs unwinnable without one or the other.
  9. I know, but that makes me a sad ghost pirate. :-(
  10. Alright Uruare, let me step in here... Again.

-You certainly sound like a lazy beatnik. Why do I say this? Because I am lazy as hell and and still manage to get enough money to buy these thing that you seem to think are impossible to get. I spend as much time RPing as I do running missions, and after 18 months I've got 4 50s; one purpled out, two completed with everything except the purples and PVP IOs, and one whose build is very much in progress. I refuse to believe that I, who is scheduled four nights a week (Plus every other thursday) for things that DON'T involve running around and farming in City, am making that much more money than the 'average' player of the game.

-Your only arguments seem to be involving PVP IOs and Purple recipes. You know, the rarest items in the game. Those are rare in order to be rewards for the people who do put effort forth. You're suggesting that these should be made easily accessible to everyone, but then you're destroying them. While I agree that PVP IOs need a more common drop rate, purples are there to be perfection. Purpled out characters are what the devs have (I know, I've seen Synapse's stats). Until Going Rogue comes out, there is /no way to be better than purpled out./ This means that if you insist on Purples becoming more accessible, it alienates the hardcore gamers by giving them nothing to work for. As I said, I consider myself an average gamer, and I like having purples as something special and rare. I get to do a little dance whenever one drops on me, and once, back before AE's purple inflation, I gave one away to a friend.

-All I do for profit on the market is sell my drops and Common IOs that I've crafted. That's it. It's pretty easy and pretty straightforward and I've got enough money to have a character who can solo 95% of an ITF spawned for 8 players (I can't solo Romulus because his sword is bigger than my fist.) It's not hard. Purples are obtainable if you play at all and more obtainable if you play more. PVP IOs are broken expensive, but that is the fault of a different system (the PVP system as a whole), NOT one involving the Consignment Houses.

-If you don't like a game that resembles your job, don't play it. Many people, apparently, do like a game that resembles your job. I have this video game I love called Harvest Moon, where you play a farmer, tend to crops, raise cows and chickens, get married, and have a kid. I'm not sure a farmer would have fun with it, but I do. Making suggestions like this based on personal preference is meaningless because others can simply respond "You don't like it? Well I do."

-INFLUENCE SINKS is what the game needs. I cannot stress that enough. This is Econ 101 here!

-As a side note about making people hold less infamy... The infamy cap of 2 billion isn't because the devs decided we shouldn't be allowed to have more. It's because they figured people probably wouldn't need more and two billion is just under the thirty two bit number limit. What does this mean? It means they didn't want to up the system used to count your cash to sixty four bits because they didn't see a need for it. The devs have never said they don't WANT people having that kind of money, they just don't feel like taking time out to change the code to let people have more.
  11. Fair enough...

Back to the topic in general: Looking at these sets and trying to figure out what sort of proliferation and new sets would feel most "right."

So currently, I'm saying we really need an Electricity Control set because seriously, why isn't there one? This isn't a question of a new set that would be "cool," but something that seems inherent to what the game already includes that just happensto be missing. Electricity is one of the more common superpowers, and this utilization of it seems strange to be absent.

I'm also for fixing and proliferating energy aura, weakening and Proliferating Ninjitsu to scrappers, and just straight proliferating Psi Blast to Corrruptors.

Electricity Control could be a set where doing enough -end to make opponents unable to fight back would be viable early on. Probably a balancing nightmare, though.

Also, I'm not sure I'd necessarily call it Sonic, but some Blaster secondary that stacked on more -Res would be useful.
  12. I predict Fire Whip as a set in itself will be requested during the first week of Demon Summoning Beta, and people will try a petless MM so they can have fire whips without the demons.
  13. Oh, I know they're not designed for thematic completeness, the idea here is that I'm looking at the design space that thematic completeness creates. It's certainly not a necessity, it's just a way to come up with potential power set ideas other than, well, some of the stuff that gets suggested in this thread.

The Gravs aside, the main reason I wouldn't call Ice/Storm the proper "pair" is because Cold Domination exists, and Ice/Cold is about as blatant as it gets.

Storm would appropriately be paired with Electric Control, which, as I said in the Dominator portion, I don't see any reason why this isn't in the game already.

Also, thank you: That is precisely the good explanation I was looking for.
  14. ...Okay, time out, time out TIME OUT!

Do you people not understand that there is a "Black Market" other than the consignment house? People keep suggesting an infamy cap on sales, and, well... it will KILL the market. Because what it will do is encourage more people to use the Trade function to trade. Why is this bad? Because it takes extra effort, and when people use the Trade function, NO INFAMY LEAVES THE SYSTEM.

I understand you're all afraid because prices are high and you can't afford anything, but all you're going to do by capping the market is force more people to trade off market because, well, Hecatomb Damage/Recharge is ALWAYS going to be worth more than 100,000,000, even if inflation is cut. It's just that good. Unless the economy shrinks drastically, it will never drop low enough for sellin it for 100 million to be a good idea.

And to Umbral: Yeah, that works, too. I'm totally in favor of an influence sink, especially one that has an option for 10 million of "Summon Black Scorpion AV to pwn face."

I disagree with you on the concept of rewards for certain tasks. While Gold Recipes started like that originally, the addition of merits to story arcs and the fact that you can buy gold recipes at AE shows that now they're just sort of... there, but I've had this argument before, and it's no the point of the thread.

The point is: We agree that the answer is Infamy Sinks, NOT rearranging the market, correct?

I don't think a 1 billion infamy badge is a good idea, though. 1 billion is a lot of infamy to spend on a badge that doesn't do anything.
  15. I like the premise, but way too many issues. Among others, what constitutes a team? If I'm duoing, will I get it every time my partner falls? Or do I need a full team of 8 in order to trigger it?

My other big issue here is, well... Vengeance. It exists, and this power just seems like a weaker version.
  16. I was thinking the same thing, Tonality, and I was having trouble coming up with an answer, I'll admit. All I really thought of is that Photon Grenade has a stun, so the set could probably include a bunch of disorients.
  17. Hyperstrike, sweetie? As much as I agree with the majority of what you say in your posts, please cool it with the double posting. I know you've got a lot to say, but you're answering the same comments multiple times whenever anyone says it.

(Disclaimer: I'm a Ghost Pirate. I use Infamy. If you use Influence instead, just replace the word when you see it)

Alright, I've made a fair amount of money on the market using a simple, lazy method. I buy common salvage, craft common IOs, and then sell those crafted IOs at about a 100% markup. It's simple, it works, and because I've memorized everything buying from me is still cheaper than crafting things yourself. There's plenty of ways to make money on the market without resorting to extreme measures, but that's not the point here. I have never bought Infamy, I have one character who is "purpled out" and I have just under 2 billion infamy on another toon who is in the process of obtaining his purples. I've been playing for just over 18 months, and I'm not even remotely 'hardcore' into the marketing. Anyone who's been playing this game for longer than me has certainly had plenty of options to get all the purples they need without resorting to buying infamy.

There is money in the system. Telling people they can't bank it won't eliminate the money from the system (unless you wipe it all, in which case, wow, you will have a LOT of angry people on your hands), but it will force them to start trading in material goods of value other than influence. The official form of currency will be the Miracle +Recovery, and everyone will be trading those. Or something to this effect. Few suggestions people make to fix the market actually solve the problem NOT of "people individually have too much influence" but "there is too much influence in the system."

Assume for a moment, that through basic gameplay, One Jillion Infamy is added to the system every day from killing enemies and selling drops to stores. Yes, I know Jillion's not a real number.
Even assuming all this money goes through the market on bids, only 10% of it disappears back into the system. Now, on day two, another Jillion infamy is added, and 10% goes away... And so on and so on every day. After a month there's about Twenty Five Jillion more infamy in the system, because of the tiny rate it's depleting. Because of this, players all have more money, and all prices are raised accordingly. If 25 players play for 25 days and the money just moves back and forth between them, prices are going to be slightly higher each day than the day before.

Now, City of Heroes does have SOME places to spend infamy. It costs to craft, lots of characters need SOs, some spend weeks at the Tailor, and these are enough to keep the cost increase slow, but it's still there. The only way to eliminate high prices is for a way for infamy to leave the system. Players need the option to buy quality goods FROM THE GAME and not just from other players.

This is why I think AE Tickets are a bad idea. This is why I think merits are a bad idea. Infamy is hurting because the only solid worth they are backed by is level 50 SOs, and those aren't actually worth much at all. The only way inflation will be fixed will be for there to be additional, sizable infamy sinks and more reliable ways to use infamy to obtain what the market sells. My suggestion is let people use infamy to buy tickets and merits directly (or even do away with tickets and merits and put everything on an infamy system), because otherwise there's just going to be more and more and more infamy in the system driving prices up more and more.
  18. Just a little thought experiment here. Most power sets seem to come in a matched pair of Primary and Secondary, but a lot of them... don't. Here's my list of powers that are missing a matched pair. Feel free to agree or disagree, but it's mostly just an inventory of what power sets we could use to fill holes.

    Blaster:
Radiation Blast and Sonic Blast are unpaired. Radiation Manipulation and Sonic Manipulation would probably be very weird, but the potential is there.

    Tanker:
Tankers have Energy Melee but no Energy Armor. I'm sure there's a perfectly good explanation for this, and I'd love to hear it.

    Defender:
Kinetics doesn't have anything resembling a matching blast set, unless you want to claim Energy, in which case Force Fields needs Pulse Rifle Blast to match it.

    Controllers:
Earth Control, Illusion Control, Plant Control, Force Field, Radiation Emission, Sonic Resonance, Storm Summoning, and Trick Arrow are all unmatched. Controllers are a mess. The only clear pairs in controller are Fire/Therm, Grav/Kin, Ice/Cold, and Mind/Emp.

    Scrappers:
Weapon sets screwing with things aside, the only thing Scrappers don't have a pair for is Katana. What's that, you say? Katana goes well with SR? Well, Billy, I think Stalkers do a good job of showing us that Katana goes with Ninjitsu even better, and Scrappers need Ninjitsu because it'd be awesome. Okay, it'd probably be overpowered, but we can fix that in editing!

    Brute:
BRUTE SMASH! Brute is happy. All brute power sets work well together. Brute has two right handed weapons and only one shield, but brute okay, because what else would one put in left hand? Delicious beverage? Yes! Brute want /Delicious Beverage secondary for use with Warmace. Brute get thirsty on long missions.

    Stalker:
Stalker's know what's what. A bit confused on whether to lump Spines with Regen like some sort of super awesome mutant or Claws with Regen like some sort of over publicized mutant, but Stalkers are good with pri-sec matches anyway.

    Corruptor:
Corruptor has new Pain set but nothing to go with it! Corruptor asks "I can haz Psychic Blast pleez?"

    Dominator:
Dominator is aaaalmost perfect thanks to i16's Earth Assault... except there's no Electricity Control. Whyfore is there no Electricity Control? This is the sort of power set that should have existed from day one.

    Mastermind:
Well, assuming Demons go with Thermal, and putting Thugs with Pain because why not, this just leaves Poison and Storm unmatched. Now, we know Poison's bad enough for us to not really care, but Storm is made of amazing. Clearly, we need some sort of Elemental Minions. Or Cloud minions. Whichever. Somebody should get on that... I think somebody already has up in the Power Suggestion thread.
  19. I could get behind this, but we don't have too much to go on. Let's try and fill out the basic 1-9 form, shall we?

    1- Pulse Rifle Blast
    2- Pulse Rifle Burst
    3- Photon Grenade
    4- Aim
5- Energy Sap (Ranged, -End on target, +End on self, Mag 3 confuse robotic targets only)
6- Pulse Rifle Spray (Cone, energy, moderate, knockdown)
7- Some sort of useless snipe power
8- Set to Stun (Ranged, 6 damage, Disorient)
9- Overload (standard nuke, your pulse rifle goes BOOM and takes out everything nearby, including draining your end. Knockback and stun)

THe only problem with that is that I don't know any way to make it modal. That is, if an attack has a chance to confuse and a chance to disorient, I don't know a way to set it to "50% chance to confuse, if not, disorient." The closest thing I can think of would be 50% chance of each which would wind up being 50% chance to disorient (which overrides confuse) and... Oookay, I see here.

We need 100% chance to confuse and 50% chance to disorient. Disorient trumps confuse (because disoriented foes, confused or not, can't attack) so the foe would either be disoriented or confused.

Side note: this game needs to decide on Stun or Disorient. PICK ONE.
  25. Here's an idea... What if this AT gets a flat boost to all movement speeds? Not too much, but say... Something that scales with level a starts at just about a 1 MPH increase and caps out at +20 MPH at level 50. This would encourage getting in close to foes to get into melee and darting out to be ranged significantly easier than Defenders and Dominators move in and out.
