Quote:260, 460, 560 = Nvidia graphics cards of different generations.I got that from the very last part of your post. It was the 260, 460, 560 that had/has me baffled. Tho looking at what I posted about my new system I'm guessing that those numbers might refer to the processor?
Uhm if it helps I'll try to put my grasp of computer hardware into perspective. When I had to buy a new motherboard for my old system all I can tell you is that the original one was red and the new one was orange.
Oh and I know what GB are, and I know that TB are a lot more than GB but how much more I have no idea.
But other than that my mind is essentially blank as a fart as far as computer tech goes.
Hee hee I'm pathetic.
1GB = 1 Gigabyte = 1,024 MB (Megabyte)
1TB = 1 Terabyte = 1,024 GB
It gets a bit confusing since as a marketing ploy hard drive manufacturers define a GB as 1,000 MB (so the capacity sounds greater) while everything else computer related defines a GB as 1,024 MB. Therefore that 750 GB hard drive actually only clocks in at 698 GB. -
Quote:That's worked for me on the two times I've seen this bug... of course both times were several months ago and I thought it had been fixed. I wonder if this is anything like the issue with Gauntlet on tankers that the Dev's broke at least three times I can think of over the years? When this has happened to me, we have always been able to continue the TF by trying the following:
1) Have other people try to call the contact, particularly if you can remember who had the star before.
2) Have the leader log out and back in.
3) As a last resort, have EVERYONE log out and back in. -
Shield is a good set, no question there. I've enjoyed my SD/Fire tanker quite a lot. All that said like all defense sets it suffers in the early going; until you get your defenses above 25% you feel really squishy. You don't start feeling like a tank until you get your defenses into the upper 30's and by the time you get to the 45% soft cap it gets really good. Still, you're going to be weak defensively until level 25 or so. Of course Shield will output a lot more damage than your WP and it'll be MUCH easier to hold aggro.
If you want something a bit sturdier yet you could make an Invuln tanker; in my opinion the best all-around tanker primary offering durability second to Stone without any of the negatives. Invuln is also much tougher early than Shield; there's much less growing pains. One downer early though is the fact that the taunt aura, Invincibility, doesn't come until level 18. Of course with either Shield or Invuln you'll immediately notice the difference in their aggro abilities over WP. Invuln will outsurvive Shield at almost all levels, however it doesn't have the nifty +damage aura or the massive Shield Charge attack.
Now for secondaries that's an open question. Really anything but Energy Melee would work well with either primary. Fire is the classic choice for damage and AOE; Super Strength is the classic pairing for Invuln and it does have a nice synergy. I'm a fan of Stone Melee for all the extra mitigation it provides with it's knockdown and stuns although I have more Fire Melee tankers than any other set.
Pick your primary and secondary, absolutely any primary in the game is better at aggro than willpower and the only "bad" secondary is EM. -
Quote:Good to know, and he isn't going to farm, if I want to do that I've several scrappers with enough durability and better damage. Hmm, how to squeeze 3 more slots in... right now I've penciled in a Karma in CJ and a Steadfast in one of the armors but I'm flat outta slots. Maybe pick up Maneuvers on the 49 pick for another Karmai do 12 k.b. ( 3 kb i.os) normally...but if hes just gonna be a farmer 1 is fine .

Quote:Yep, that mission has changed. It used to be he spawned with a group of non-hostile Malta (until you finished his dialogue); now he spawns with the Vampire Commandant and you need to kill that spawn before you can click on him. He ALWAYS is in the Commandant's spawn now.Pretty sure it's changed recently.
I spent pretty much all of I18 farming blue-side 40-50 tips, and ran the Maelstrom mish countless times. Never had a problem finding him on toons w/and w/o stealth, +perception, etc. Just recently, maybe in the last few weeks, he's gone from mostly stealthy (i.e. you can still find him) to completely invisible. I've started to just skip those now.
Usually the progression of that mission is a mostly straight line, first the Oberst is in one of the first rooms, then beyond that you'll find the Commandant and Maelstrom and finally in the Bass Hatchery (more often than not it seems to use this map) you'll find the glowie. -
I've been pondering my long-neglected Fire/Fire as well; I noticed in the build Mack provided there's only one KB IO... isn't that a bit light for a Fire tanker? My current build, still only level 40 (despite dating back to issue 3) has Acro since I've yet to respec for i19; what's the consensus on how much KB protection is enough? Two IO's? Three?

Ok, if you're taunting Romy and attacking him there's NO WAY a blaster will get aggro from you; even another tanker would be hard pressed to accomplish that. As a guess were you using Taunt on the puffballs and Roman ambushes and depending on your aura to hold Romy? That's not a reliable method for two reasons... first because of the 17 mob aggro cap and secondly because all auras, even normally autohit ones, must roll tohit against AV class mobs.
As a tanker you need to get there first and get the attention of the mobs. If you do this and keep up taunt on the AV I guarantee no blaster will pull the AV's attention away from you. On CMA even an Ice tanker can't pull aggro from me if I'm focused on keeping it and get there first. Of course the reverse is also true, that's why it's so important for the tank to get there first.
If the team is beating you to the mobs then you must pick up the pace. -
Have to agree with Hyper here; while you could squeeze a bit more performance by upgrading your video card and PSU you're essentially throwing money at a basic platform that's out dated enough to be marginal at best. Although with that low resolution monitor you aren't asking for a lot out of the system.
If it were me I'd give serious consideration to a new machine instead of trying to put band-aids on your old one. You're looking at ~$60 for a decent PSU (assuming you aren't getting a monster vid card) and probably roughly $90 for a lower end video card. Yes, you would see improved performance; but the question is how much. Ultra mode is pretty much out of the question with that machine; you could get a powerful enough video card and enough PSU to run it but I don't think the rest of the hardware is up to the task.
Some of the more hardware savvy people may have a different thought but at a guess you'd probably get ~30-40fps out of a decent vid card at that (pretty low) resolution your monitor is showing with mid level (non-ultra) settings. What's your budget look like, we may be able to suggest something.
From your earlier questions I take it you're not comfortable with replacing components yourself so you may have to add in the cost of a shop doing the upgrades for you. This shouldn't be a huge issue; replacing a PSU and vid card takes about 5-10 minutes and it really IS pretty idiot proof... that's part of the beauty of a computer, anyone with some patience and the ability to use a screwdriver can build one from scratch. -
If that does go live that way then I agree; Musculature may well get a reprieve from it's position of tail end charlie. I'd have to think about Spiritual though; it's the question of greater damage vs faster recharge.
-
Quote:Will the Judgement nukes benefit from the damage bonus of the Alpha? If so then that's a point in Musculature's favor.Musculature is *currently* a poor choice. W/Judgement coming around the corner, an extra 30% or 45% damage for those nukes is sounding mighty tasty (~700 point, 40', 32 target fireballs every 90s? Yes, please). Still, Spritual (for faster & bigger DP, faster Rage & FT, etc) or Cardiac (limitless end, more resists) are both solid choices. Nerve's def bonuses are kinda weak, and Rage will give you all the to hit you'll ever need.
SS >> BA for both ST & AoE damage. By quite a bit, actually. Only Fire beats SS for AoE damage (and ST damage too, but there are other contenders for tanker ST damage king as well). -
I didn't say nobody leveled; in fact all of us did in the course of the TF. Nevertheless facing LR our highest was an untrained, just dinged 49.

Not being interested in PvP I haven't kept up with that community; I was going on some general comments I've seen on the boards.

I have a pair of the Asus VE245 24" monitors and they're very sharp and clear without detectable lag. They lack the speakers of the unit you're looking at but I've been pleased with them. Heck, I've a 7.1 surround sound setup anyway so I wouldn't be using those speakers even if I had them.
I don't see any real use for USB on the monitor, just get a good USB Hub and you're fine. It's currently out of stock but I've a couple of these and they're great units. 13 USB ports on your desktop; you'll never miss the ports on the monitor. Heck, speaking of monitor USB ports I've 3 high end Samsung 24" monitors on my editing machine with the built in USB... I find them highly problematic. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't... and these were $1,000 apiece monitors 5 years ago. Just shell out $40 for a decent hub and if it goes south simply replace it.
I can't answer on the display port but DVI ports were the "next big thing" several years ago and most monitors (all I've seen recently) STILL have a VGA port alongside the DVI port. At a guess the DVI port won't be going away anytime soon and when it does you'll probably be ready for a new monitor anyway.
On resolution 1920x1080 is just fine, one of the major drawbacks to going up to 1920x1200 is you're asking the graphics card to push more pixels causing lower framerates all other settings being equal. Heck, 1920x1080 is still a lot of pixels to push with CoH's... um, not really optimized render engine.
My editing machine has those three high end Samsung units and they do swivel portrait/landscape. Frankly I don't see any real benefit and I've never swiveled them. On stands there's any number of mounts that you can attach to your desk and then attach the monitor to if you need more adjustment. I've had my eye on this unit for some time.
I've worked with cheap Samsung monitors that were pretty poor, especially in the stands. The pair I previously had on my gaming machine ended up breaking and forcing me to lean the screen against the stand. I did that for about 6 months until one of them quit with a puff of smoke and I replaced both with the Asus. Based on that I'd be a little concerned about Samsung's cheaper line - the high end stuff is fine however. -
Of the in game friends I had when I first started playing there's only one still playing... and we've known each other since college more years ago than I care to remember. I've a couple of other friends I've gotten pretty close to playing in the last few years and several more I meet occasionally. The trick is simply to find people you enjoy and team with them. There's going to be turnover in your friends list; that's just the nature of a game as people come and go.
Global channels are a great resource for finding fun people to team with, use it and build up a new friend list. I've seen many of my old friends quit playing, some moved on to other MMO's and some have stayed or come back. -
From what I've read most of the PvP crowd moved to Freedom; there's very little of it on most of the other servers.

Quote:Oh no question with good players and a good team it could be done; after all it's been done with debuffed players and buffed enemies (had a buddy on that run, the leader goofed on the settings, started the TF and they decided to see if it could be done).I'd put money on a team of SO builds getting the Apex Mo. Once players know what they're doing it becomes simpler. It maybe that all IOs do is allow people to get through it the first to a few times easier.
Heck, I recall once running a STF with nobody on the team above 48... it was tough but we managed. The thing is, in both of those situations all 8 players were highly experienced, very good at playing their characters and had a very good team mix. I'd bet that a random PuG would have a lot more trouble. -
I strongly second this suggestion. Frankly I don't think Musculature is a benefit for any tanker given that you should be getting your attacks into ED range damage anyway and the secondary effects mostly don't apply to a tank.
-
Quote:Stone can do it, but the OP explicitly rejected it as an option. I've no doubt that a Stone/DM would do the job handily without support or inspiration use barring extremely bad luck.SA/DM maybe?
Use Darkest Night on LR and park yourself on one of the tower to spam SL. EE and Taunt when needed.
See if some one could get e/n defense to 75 on this
I've tanked LR unassisted with my Stone/Fire on numerous occasions and only used a couple of inspirations; I'm sure that DM would make up that gap. Heck, I tanked the tower buffed LR several times in issue 9 on SO's so I know damn well it can do it with IO bonuses. -
Quote:Great summation here and very true. I have a BS/SD scrapper who's IO'd heavily and more durable than many SO'd tankers. Compare him to a fully IO'd tanker and it's a very different story.I think its obvious in itself that an IOed character would be more effective than one with identical power picks who is not IOed. If we are saying armored characters are made obsolete because squishy characters can use IOs, then we have to consider what IOs can do for the armored characters too. I think all of us are in agreement that a Corruptor with capped S/L defense is an end-state character. If we're going to say that he makes other characters ineffective, we have to consider the best other characters have to offer in their end states too. This is no different than why you can't compare an IOed Scrapper to an SOed Tanker and conclude Tankers are not useful.
I also have a highly IO'd Fire/EM blaster who while not soft capped to range is still at around 38%. He plays much like a ranged scrapper and is at least as durable as a typical SO'd scrapper. Against an IO'd scrapper he's again considerably weaker durability wise, again as it should be.
I wonder if the root problem some people are having with Apex isn't that it's the first challenge in the game that clearly isn't designed around a purely SO equipped character? And also that it introduces a mechanic in the blue patches that forces a different strategy than the typical tank & spank we've all gotten so used to.
There's always going to be a huge gap between the effectiveness of a base, SO enhanced character and one with massive IO bonuses. Therefore why shouldn't we have new (let me stress NEW; leave the old content alone) content designed to challenge those high end builds? -
First and foremost I want good players as support, the AT and powersets come in a somewhat distant second.
Getting to the meat of your question though my favorite support powersets depend on what I'm playing and what we're running. If I'm playing a blaster then I love a kinetic (who actually USES SB), cold, bubbler and good aggro control. Debuffs are always welcome on ANY team of course. If I'm playing melee, tank or scrapper doesn't matter, I again like a Kin who buffs and I really like debuffs on the team. When I'm tanking I really want two main things: debuffs and damage... I'll handle the aggro.
As a player when I'm not tanking I mainly play debuffers; although I do have a Mind/Kin 'troller who's fun depending on my mood... and yes, I DO have and use SB. I also love playing a blaster when I'm in the mood to relax and not worry about the rest of the team like I do when I'm tanking.
In the final analysis anything can be "support", as an example CMA is nearly unkillable out of his own resources... most buffs aren't that important so for him "support" is a team with damage to kill the mobs quickly. In that respect a good blaster qualifies as a support character. -
Quote:Well, if you have a keld on the team you'll continue to get voids even after the keld leaves unless you disband the team. I'd guess that somehow you were still flagged as the "team" with a keld. I've never seen that happen before but I really wouldn't be too concerned since voids aren't all that dangerous anymore.Ok so this is kinda unrelated to the original purpose of this thread but hey, its my thread..lol
Anyways, Last night after rolling up my Archery/Energy blaster, I jumped on a team with Local Man (who was on his Peacebringer) and ran a single Tip mish. We just used the mish to chat a bit. Well, he logs and I go about my business of meeting my City Council contact and running my initial mishes in AP. I run one mish. No biggie. I take out a few clockwork and call it a day. The second mish however introduced me to an aspect of the game I had Never seen before...The mish again was fighting clockwork but all of a sudden about halfway into the mish a stinkin Void Seeker pops around a corner and blasts me. Now I am fully aware that the voids spawn when you are teamed with a Kheldian but why in the world did this happen SOLO and like a half hour after teaming with Local? Surprised me needless to say. Anyone else have issues with this? Is this normal? -
Quote:I've an Archery/EM blaster that was a fun trip to 50. I found that Build Up/Aim (that order is important for redraw) Rain of Arrows/Fistful/Exploding would eliminate an entire spawn of +2 mobs nearly 100' away... the only survivors being bosses or the lucky mob who got missed by part of the chain. If I had someone to hold aggro I'd use BU/Aim/Fistful/Rain/Fistful/Exploding and even wipe the bosses. Yes, you could just get that in one BU cycle if you didn't waste any time.Ok so I am starting to see a trend of taking /EM lol. Honestly, I had pretty much figured that. Thanks for confirming my thoughts. I see that the type of snipe however is gonna be up to personal taste. Seen Archery, Psionic, Rad. I did like the explanation of Rad's alternate abilities of -def. That could be good. So lets refine this Thread a bit.
As most snipes are pretty much the same...What secondary effects would you suggest from the various primaries?
(PS. I am a bit worried about taking Archery for the fact that its Lethel damage. Can a case be made that this is not such an issue as I think? Please convince me as I would love an Archery toon for theme purposes)
I've yet to alpha that blaster and I've got him penciled in for Spiritual since I took him to 50 without Fitness and never missed it... Archery is extremely endurance friendly. I had Conserve Power and would need it after about 3 minutes of full bore attack. I certainly wouldn't get Cardiac on an archer, you don't need the extra endred.
I'm currently working on my Fire/EM blaster, also at 50. I have gone Cardiac on this toon; he's currently slotted with the tier 4 Cardiac and along with perma-boost range most of my blasts have a range of over 140' and BoF has a range of ~80'. Even Blaze is above 70' so I'm able to stay well back and bring on the pain. I'm not a big fan of Snipes but I do have Blazing Bolt as a pure pulling tool... with a range in the default slot it has a range of over 300'. Of the two blasters I'd say the Fire/EM is a better damage machine at the expense of CONSIDERABLY higher endurance usage. Of course Rain of Arrows is a mighty nice tier 9 and useful in many more situations than Inferno.
I've enjoyed both characters; they're a big change of pace from my more usual role of tanking and I actually find them relaxing to play; all I have to worry about is staying alive and bringing the pain. It's MUCH less responsibility than tanking. -
He will need to buy all new enhancements for a second build of course; that's something that's different from a respec. Of course the second build DOES leave the original completely untouched.
-
Quote:I'd considered getting Weave but it had to come at the expense of one of my other pools so I was leery. Fly is a fairly integral part of the character and the "trump card" that forces mobs to use ranged attacks (well, and AOE but trying to build two types of def either compromises the defenses or the build).I do not think I'd change anything (maybe slide the range enhancer out of Breath since you have perma boost range and use it either in Hasten or to 2 slot Aim with Adj Targeting: rech and tohit/rech). But as an alternative to think about:
You gain 3% HPs, 15% sm/le resists, and 5% defense, but lose Flight (a big loss, IMO), a pulling tool, and Conserve Power (with boost range, regular blasts pull great too and the build looks to have gobs of endurance anyway). Also 8 feet of range in Breath and 4 seconds of recharge in Rain are lost. I think I'd keep your original, but it is something to consider.
I've thought about tossing a pair of Adj. Targeting into Aim... my live build has both Aim & BU with a pair of them and a common recharge... but it's a question of finding the slots. I'm also on the fence about the extra range in BoF; on one hand more range in a cone increases the AOE of the cone but on the other that slot may be more useful elsewhere.
You may well have a point on Rain; excluding Hasten that slot is getting me ~8 seconds of recharge, 40 seconds without vs 32 seconds with... that would free a second slot for the damage bonus in Aim. Conserve Power I actually use right before the nuke; it stretches the end benefit of a blue so I don't have to stop fighting while waiting for recovery to kick in.
Hasten I'm sorry to admit I constantly forget about; since it isn't auto (that slot going for boost range) I have to actually notice it's recharged and click the bloody thing. Blazing Bolt is a pure pulling tool, not a damage power. I've never been a big fan of snipes and it didn't seem worth the expenditure in slots. It is nice to be able to pull a mob from 300' away although admittedly that doesn't come into play more than once or twice a night. Of all my powers it's certainly the first on the "droppable" list.
Thanks for the thoughts though, I appreciate it.
