Fire/Fire Tank Build Review

As the title suggests, I would appreciate some input into my Fire/Fire Tank's build. Basically, if you see room for improvement, please let me know. I would like to keep my recharge at around 50%, but more is always nice. I don't plan on investing the 2-2.5 billion on the PvP +Def IO, although I know it would definitely help. The build is currently softcapped to S/L and about 5% away from softcapping to Melee. Please, let me know what you think can be improved upon.

I can't look at it because I'm at work at the moment, but what is your E/N defense sitting at?

Since those are likely your lowest resistances, it is probably the biggest hole in your defenses. There are a significant number of pure Energy attacks in the game that neither S/L or Melee defense will protect your from. (Malta Sappers are tagged Energy/Ranged as well)

It is not a good idea to soft cap to both S/L and Melee because most melee attacks have some S/L component to them. The game only looks at your highest defense category and ignores the rest. By only going for S/L and melee, you neglect defense for the next biggest threat: ranged energy damage. In current Incarnate content, that is all the Clockwork tend to do. From the few screenshots that have been released on I20, it looks like energy damage will continue to be a major threat.

I would suggest going for 32.5% S/L and E/N. That leaves you with plenty of room for recharge bonuses, while putting you at one small purple inspiration away from the soft cap. In many situations, you will find that defense to be more than adequate. You may also have teammates who buff your defense to the soft cap.

Thanks to both of you. I hadn't even thought of the Incarnate content, even though I really enjoy Apex. It took a little tinkering, but the current build now has 32.9% Defense to S/L and E/N. F/C Defense is sitting at 20%, so two small purples will bring me to the cap there, although I don't foresee that being a problem ever. I lost some +Recharge, but still sitting at 40% at the moment. Not the greatest, and if you see some room to add +Recharge, please let me know.

Quick suggestion: the Performance Shifter proc is worth a lot more EPS than the EndMod/Acc, and isn't unique, so you should put one in Physical Perfection. Otherwise, it looks pretty good to me.

One thing you might not have considered is a positional defense build. If you're considering a "one-purple" setup, it might actually be easier to use Melee/Ranged/AoE and get a very good amount of protection from toxic and positional Psionic. Non-positional still hurts, but that's why we have Healing Flames. It's a very different build, though - you'll be burning a few respecs to get the Erads and KCs out of your current build. My best attempt has 45% recharge, which is a little below your threshold, but you could swap Rise of the Phoenix for Hasten if you want a bit more speed on HF and your attacks.

Anyway, here's a data chunk:

Redacted due to superior build below

EDIT: Well, is my face red. Spotted a way to keep the softcap, pick up 5% recharge (50% exactly), improve the slotting in Scorch and Fiery Embrace, and all at the cost of 2.5% damage and a less overslotted Consume. The new, far better, build chunk follows.

Interesting build Mack. I hadn't even thought about the possibility of doing an all positional build. Definitely something to think about. Thanks!

Mack, could you post your build as a text hero plan? I can't use Mids on this computer and would love to see what you developed.

Gladly. I warn you, it's not cheap - no Glad Armor proc, but all three healing uniques, three LotG sets (two are only 2 pieces, at least) and three full Oblit sets.

Shouldn't cost much more than that, especially if you can get some of the bigger pieces from merits or A-merits, and shop a little carefully. If you try and buy it all in one go, though, you'll blow through that billion pretty quickly. My advice is to leave bids up for at least a day, and often a week or two if you have nothing else to do with the consignment slots.

EDIT: I'm silly. The build I posted above is a later revision, where I tried swapping around the slotting to get the Numina's proc out of Healing Flames, and it wound up not fitting into the build at all. The one in the build chunk is almost exactly what I posted above, but with the sixth slot of Scorch moved into Healing Flames, the Mako's replaced by five Crushing Impacts (I skipped the Acc/Dam, but on second thoughts I'd skip the Acc/Dam/Rech here) and the Doctored Wounds replaced with a full set of Numina's Convalescence. Quite a bit more regen/recovery/max HP, but 3% less +damage.

I've been pondering my long-neglected Fire/Fire as well; I noticed in the build Mack provided there's only one KB IO... isn't that a bit light for a Fire tanker? My current build, still only level 40 (despite dating back to issue 3) has Acro since I've yet to respec for i19; what's the consensus on how much KB protection is enough? Two IO's? Three?

Good to know, and he isn't going to farm, if I want to do that I've several scrappers with enough durability and better damage. Hmm, how to squeeze 3 more slots in... right now I've penciled in a Karma in CJ and a Steadfast in one of the armors but I'm flat outta slots. Maybe pick up Maneuvers on the 49 pick for another Karma

One thing on your build. Putting the unique in PhysPerf is a waste. Take the extra slot you're using for the PerfShifter proc and put it in health. Then put the unique in there. Then put the PerfShifter proc in the default slot.

Agreed with the 12 points of KB protection. Not having Acro is fantastic as it's one less toggle to run. I usually either go with the Blessing of the Zephyr and two Steadfast KB IOs. They're usually easier to fit into a tight Fire/Fire build.

Two quick questions:

#1. All the builds use the Kinetic Combat Triple in boxing. do you actually USE boxing as an attack? On mine I set muled so saved 100m by slotting the proc instead.

#2. I can't seem to get enough accuracy (I did make the mistake of going with hover over combat jump and put my kismet into it so it only works when I hover but then I can't burn, grrr) yet almost all of these have only the 4 slots in attacks with only 1/2 an IO for accuracy. Are there enough set bonuses that you guys are hitting reliably? I like the fifth slot with either a mako or Crushing Impact for a touch extra acc, but it really, really makes the slots hard to come by.

Thanks!

My answer to your first question, is that when I build for S/L defense and I'm using Boxing as a mule, I use the proc as well. Much cheaper, and I just remove it from my tray. The answer to your 2nd question is that I used a 5th slot as well when using Kinetic Combats. The stats are just too poor for my liking without a little extra boost from somewhere else.

I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on a new build I worked up. It's mainly for low level TFs and exemping with my SG. It softcaps to E/N with one small purple and softcaps to S/L with two small purples. I didn't worry too much about S/L defense as I should have around 70% to S/L resistance, but it will definitely be handy to have. I believe I understand the mechanics of IOs. IOs exemp to the level they are, not the power their picked, correct? Or am I making that part up? If anyone could review the build and let me know any changes I would appreciate it.

EDIT: Also, it doesn't show in the forum view, but all IOs are either the lowest the can be, or at level 20.

Used your build as a jump off point. Now able to cap s/l/e/ne with a single purp insp. I know you are not too worried about it with s/l resistance you have, but if you can do it, why not? Changed the order of your powers so you can use most of them even exemping down to 27.

Also, got rid of all your past cap conflicts including the extra lotg +rech.

Hope it helps. Also hope you have alot of patience. Getting all these IOes at the lowest level would make jesus curse.

I didn't worry too much about S/L defense as I should have around 70% to S/L resistance, but it will definitely be handy to have. I believe I understand the mechanics of IOs. IOs exemp to the level they are, not the power their picked, correct? Or am I making that part up?

EDIT: Also, it doesn't show in the forum view, but all IOs are either the lowest the can be, or at level 20.
In answer to your question, a set of IOs will provide its set bonus down to 3 levels below the level of the highest IO in the batch. So if you have a lvl 20, 20, 23, 21, 21 slotted, you would still have the 5 set bonus down to lvl 20, and the 4 set bonus down to lvl 18, and so on. Regardless of the level of the power. Note that SOME procs work differently, it depends on the proc. A LotG works like a set bonus, a Numina +rec/+regen or Stealth proc doesn't, and works based on whether the power is used, regardless of the IO level. A lvl 50 stealth IO in sprint works fine at 2nd level.

Regarding getting all the IOs at as low levels as possible, I don't know if its worth killing yourself to do that. I've found that taking Tough early on plus having fully slotted armors makes me plenty tough for lower level content, its really level 50 content where you have to worry a lot about survivability while tanking AVs, sometimes multiple AVs, ambushes, debuffing mobs, and so on. As a compromise, maybe you want to get IOs around level 30/31, that covers all the Task Forces except Positron, Synapse and Sister Psyche. Or drop to 28 and cover Psyche as well. Sub level 30ish content is designed for characters who aren't even SOed out yet, so not that hard to tank for unless you really want to run at high difficulty.
