Quote:There are SO many uses for cages in both team and solo settings it's not even funny.I agree with this so much. I always see earth controllers take cages but there's no reason to when quicksand is a superior skill.
I wouldn't skip QS or Cages on any earth controller/dom. -

Hi all,
Since the GR patch and subsequent patches my client fails to fully exit upon quitting the game. When I log off I left with the last frame viewed on my screen and the client still running under my task manager>processes.
The only way for me to quit the game completely is to open the task manager and kill the CoH process. If I log back in after doing this the game tells me that my account is already logged in. Does this mean that my computer is failing to disconnect from the CoH server? And if so how do I fix it?
Thanks for the help!

I'd had my Stormie at Ranged and AoE defense cap a while back, but lost a lot of my damage in the process.
I recently rebuilt her for 35% in ranged and AoE (1 small purple away from cap) and am much happier-- especially since hurricane can debuff enough accuracy to effectively cap me against non-AVs. -
Quote:...or don't go near the yellows. No KB protection on my emp and KB hasn't ever been an issue.Grab at least 13 points of KB protection (Acro + one -KB IO should do it) in case you get hit with a blast from a loose yellow
If you're considering a build just for raids then you'll want to do two things: slot for as much + recharge as you can cheaply and slot certain powers in ways not normally slotted for PvE play.
Healing Aura- 5 doctored wounds
Heal Other- 5 doctored wounds + 1 Range
Absorb Pain- 5 doctored wounds + 1 Range (AP is useful as hami and green attacks reduce the amount of heal that lands by a %. If your AP is slotted fully you can often heal a debuffed scrapper or tank by enough to keep them standing till the debuff wears off.
Clear Mind- 1 Recharge + 1 Range
Fortitude- 2-3 Recharge + 1 Range (Hami and gang aren't hard to hit and ignore high defense--you're only using this for the damage buff.)
Regen Aura- 5 doctored wounds (+ regen is what makes hero hami raids a breeze)
Recovery Aura- 2-3 Recharge ( you could use Efficacy adapter for the +5 set recharge bonus if you only have 4 sets of doctored wounds equipped)
Adrenaline Boost- 5 doctored wounds + 1 Range (normal PvE I slot this for Endurance Mod to overcome Tier 9 nuke -recovery periods. For a raid you're using this to prevent your main tank from succumbing to green debuffs and hami damage thus the heal set).
Rez- 2-3 Recharge + 1 Range
Honorable mention powers:
Recall (You really don't want to go in to rez that guy that just got back from being AFK in time to die after a respawn)
Assault (+18% damage for your team)
Tactics (Fear resistance)
Any holds from your secondary or ancillary (help rip through greens faster) -
If you can manage your responsibilities to the team, and Empathy has a lot of them, while adding to team DPS then you should proudly call yourself an offender.
Furthermore I'd rather have an offender Empath on a team over a self righteous single blast "pure healer" type. What happens when the team tank and/or controller start mitigating the majority of the damage the team takes? A "pure healer" would have less primary work to do and no secondary to fall back on while a balanced DPSing defender would still be contributing their fair share.
Plus, it's just plain fun to run in with a squishy defender and mix it up! -
Just an FYI:
You might have a small turnout for your event. The login servers are no behaving. -
Quote:1. Mez is less of a nuisance than it used to be.Cold... I couldn't bring myself to say better when there is that huge Mez hole...
-Mobs begin to look for other targets when a character is mez'd.
-The duration on many Mez powers has gone down.
-Blasters can still do damage while mez'd
-Non offensive toggle no longer need to be re-toggled.
2. Most Mez powers require a hit check.
-Cold provided positional and typed defense. Mesmerize is the only power not covered by positional.
-Sleet causes mobs to switch priorities from "Mez that defender" to "GET OUT OF SLEET NAO!"
3. -recharge, -recharge, and oh... did I mention - recharge? Sure, they can mez me... ONCE!
-Cold neuters attack chains--even malta will run out of attacks if properly debuffed.
For general random content as well as some of the more difficult endgame content I'd pick cold over FF and Sonic every time. It's simply more versatile; therefore better. -
Blackstar, A.K.A. the dark fart, is a substandard nuke.
Sure, it gives you some front loaded AoE damage and a hefty accuracy debuff, but when all is said and done I'd rather have my endurance bar if solo or share the kill credit when teamed.
As Jibikao indicated, a less situational power might be a better pick. -
I've got one of each and they both shine in different situations.
Sonic
Sonic won't prevent people from faceplanting, it just gives them more time to react.
That being said, the two resistance buffs are better on players who already have some resistance to damage or high hit points like tanks, scrappers and brutes.
You primary debuff, disruption field, needs a host that's comfortable in melee range: tanks, brutes, scrappers and stalkers.
Force Field
Getting hit less is beneficial to all, but better for those who draw a lot of aggro but can't take as many hits as their melee counterparts--controllers and blasters.
Furthermore, FF has the ability to mitigate damage by removing NPCs ability to land melee attacks. This again is more beneficial for ranged based ATs.
The absence of a resistance typed debuff means that the rest of your team will have to make up some damage potential; likely in the form of a blaster.
General Outlook
Both sets are nice, but I believe Sonic has a slight advantage in the form of providing more the opportunity to form a more versatile team. But why limit your choices to those two when both cold and (not yet ported to defender) thermal are so much better? -
I've found it to be useful as my Miracle/Numina unique mule.
My Bot/Traps runs around without fitness, but maintains all the leadership toggles. The +regen from the actual power is just a bonus. -
-
It all depends on how you choose to play your character.
Controller primaries are great for mitigating damage to your team, which might be counter productive if you're looking to get a big healing rush. That said, playing controller and empath at the same time will ALWAYS leave you with something to do.
Also worth noting is that as you progress in level the Empathy set is more about buffing key individuals on your team. If you opt to forgo buffing duties you might start to notice your teams evaporate around you. This is usually because people are too polite to tell you that they are unhappy with the lack of Fortitude, regen aura and clear mind.
Now if you want to play a set more focused on healing you might consider a Pain Domination corrupter in the future. With the Going Rogue expansion coming out you'd even be able to move it hero side with a little effort. -

Quote:Two things here...WP/Axe whom only loses say AV aggro when the /shield or invul scrapper is wailing away and I havent dropped a taunt on him/her)
1. Maintaining positive aggro on AVs requires taunt.
2. Roughly... Damage Dealt x Arbitrary Taunt Aura Factor (ATAF) = Aggro Willpower has a low ATAF and Shield has a high one. Magnify that by the damage disparity and you get the picture. Taunt from your secondary helps you increase your ATAF substantially. -
The Dark Watchers in RotC won't do much for ya, and you already have 5 1.5% healths w/o it.
Ice patch won't need an End Red. I'd move that slot, add a Kismet and drop your LotGs down to 3 per defense power.
Drop the Numina sets to 3, the % heal does nothing for you, and the % added to your regen is nigh insignificant. If you're really bothered by the regen loss slot a common IO in the 4th slot and save a few million.
That's all I can think of now. Might have more later. -
The market is currently having troubles completing transactions. It takes several attempts to get things in or out *giggity*.
Please check on the Market servers resident hamster population to ensure their needs are being met.
Thank you! -
I appreciate your input as well Fireminded. And like all PvP, in game and out, you only really lose the fight if you let them get your goat.
Slash was tempting in the early levels as a filler, but I share Werner's opinion regarding attack chain optimization. So at 34, when Headsplitter is slotted, I would have to dump hack or Slash.
My original question was basically whether the benefit of the procs would outweigh the lower damage. Werner's input, along with a little number crunching of my own, convinced me to stick with Hack. -
Quote:You would. But gimping your attack chain with a terrible attack in order to get a very slight increase in the frequency of a minor damage buff isn't going to be worth it.
Edit: Wait, what am I saying, Slash has the same activation time as Hack, so it won't help with the proc at all. Yeah, it recharges faster, but that shouldn't be a serious build problem to overcome in an IO build. You should be activation time limited, not recharge time limited.
Edit 2: Assuming you want a dual-Parry chain, you'll want Head Splitter -> Parry -> Disembowel -> Hack -> Parry. To fit in that chain, Hack only needs +5% recharge. So activation time is the same, and recharge is a complete non-issue.
Thanks for the advice! I'll keep hacking away then I suppose -

I'm trying to decide how I want to build out my BS scrapper, and after doing some research on Katana and BS scrapper builds I started scratching my head.
Katana builds seem to favor Gamblers Cut, the Katana version of Slash, over the Sting of the Wasp, or the Katana version of Hack. When I look at BS builds Hack is taken nearly every time no questions asked.
So my question is this, if I intend to load an attack with the Hecatomb and Achilles Heel procs would I be better off using Slash over Hack? I mean it's working for the Katana folks, right? -
The patch notes for 1800.201005212331.2T claim that it "Fixed a bug that caused many critters with ranged attacks to change behavior and prefer melee range, including Rikti Drones and most Mastermind pets. Critters should behave as they used to again."
Unfortunately this isn't the case for the Illusion Control Phantasm. I've been keeping track of Phanty for a few play sessions now, and he consistently flies into melee range to unleash his ranged attacks. While I do like that torrent gets more use, I don't care for the fact that I have to re-summon him nearly 3 times as often.
What are people's feeling on this: do we like the new aggressive phanty or do we want to bring this to Castle's attention in hopes of restoring his range preference? -
Really?
*runs to blue side and starts buying* -
Quote:If I remember correctly, and I'll have to look it up again, but Thermal seemed to service oriented to me. Selfless. I like to have buffs too. Or I think that's what I remember. All for others, none for self.
Some people like playing support and others don't. Personally I would have quit the game a long time ago if I'd stuck to scrappers and blasters. Don't get me wrong, they can be fun to play; but after an hour they bore me to tears with how 2 dimensional they are. Buffing/debuffing/healing adds a third dimension to the game for me--but to each their own.
OP: Fire/Thermal is a great combo, but enjoying it requires attention to detail. Keeping three pets buffed for your career is daunting. Doing it while buffing a team of 8 can be tedious for even the most support minded. I rerolled mine to an Earth/Therm and never looked back. Sure she solos slowly, but she also solos AV with only a smattering of IOs, and brings a lot to the table on teams.
