Defender Def build?
I did it quite easily with my FF/AR but I would think it would be very hard with a Kin. What is your ranged set?
I'm most curious about the possibility of gettin a non-FF or maybe I'll just say Kin build to at least ranged damage cap? I'm on the side it's not real possible and that has lend me to not even try to gut my build I have and soft cap ranged damage... any thoughts?

Force Fields: Detention Field (10%->16% slotted)
Traps: Force Field Generator (10% -> 16% slotted)
Cold Domination: Arctic Fog (5% -> 8% slotted)
Dark Miasma: Shadow Fall (5% -> 8% slotted)
Storm Summoning: Steamy Mist (5% -> 8% slotted)
Without those though, getting the extra 8% usually requires some serious gimping of a character, but is certainly doable. After all blasters can soft cap to ranged, and you get more benefit from Maneuvers, Weave, Combat Jumping, etc. But kin also suffers from not having as many set options as some other defender sets.

Kinetics stacks very well with the chem round aspect of DP. The -damage stacking plays right into the siphon power and fulcrum shift -damage. It's not exactly added defense, but there is definite synergy there, especially with the close range AoEs that Kins like.

Any Defender can start off with:
CJ/Hover, slotted with IOs: 4%
Fighting: Tough w/Steadfast and slotted Weave: 11%
Manouvers, slotted: 5.5%
Fitness will be your 4th pool to run all this, by the way.
for 20.5% Defence to everything.
3 Thunderstrike sets in your single target blasts for an extra 11.25% Ranged Defence.
Red Fortune in Weave and Manouvers adds another 5%, saturating your +2.5% bonuses.
(and these sets are all useful actual enhancements too, no muling)
Thats 36.75% vs Ranged. This leaves you 8.25% away from the Ranged soft cap.
You pick this up via:
World of Confusion with the purple set (+5%)
Stupefy in Boxing (+3.125%)
Blessing of the Zephyr (2 pieces) in Fly/Superjump +1.25%
TADA! capped to range!
Sticking Malaise Illusion in WoC as you level will almost get you there before you hit 50.
[Edit] Mako's Bite is a better fit in Boxing, +3.75% and makes the actual attack useful.
I'd had my Stormie at Ranged and AoE defense cap a while back, but lost a lot of my damage in the process.
I recently rebuilt her for 35% in ranged and AoE (1 small purple away from cap) and am much happier-- especially since hurricane can debuff enough accuracy to effectively cap me against non-AVs.
At one point my Empath had a soft-capped (to Ranged dmg) build, so I am certain that a Kinetic defender could do it as well.

Had an Emp/Sonic/Dark build (lost when the computer died unfortunately ... and lost defense do to BotZ changes as well) that was soft capped and solid enough offensively to best a mob of level 53 Rikti in the RWZ and did so sans inspires and temp powers. The 54's were a bit too much to handle after several tries and she was headed back to the drawing board when the BotZ changes hit.
This wasn't her exact build (which is now obsolete anyway as mentioned) but something along these lines is where the next build will likely go. Biggest issues, recharge (or the lack of enough more precisely) and, surprise surprise, mez ... when she got mezzed her toggles would get suppressed resulting in a serious drop from the soft cap (45+ to mid 30's) and she'd get pounded pretty hard. If Regen Aura was running she'd 'easily' survive it, but it got very hairy during Regen Auras down times.

This is capped Range & AoE Def, S/L Resist (only 74.7 in the data chunk, but that requires very little modification to cap, just some higher-level IOs as I default to 35s). No purples, LotGs, or other expensive IOs used although there are 3 Thunderstrike sets in there and two Zephyr KBs.
